- mcherm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I'm not sure that's true. A single highly popular app based on XUL could change everything. Remember the old days when you had to download and install software in order to use it? With XUL apps you have to download and install just one app (Firefox) and then they all work. So the adoption will be similar what you get with plug-ins. Essentially, your potential audience is a LOT smaller (1/10th? 1/20th?), but if the content and features are good enough, then you WILL get users. Just one XUL application that reached the popularity of Flickr, or anything at all released by Google would be enough.
- Dracos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6IE will never natively support XUL. IE7 on Vista will support XAML, which is Microsoft's reimplementation of XUL (just like Java -> J++, Javascript -> JScript, etc). Nothing else will support XAML, so this is just another case of MS forcing everyone into vendor lock in.
When Gecko is fully converted to use Cairo graphics (1.9 or 2.0), then we'll see some really slick stuff, as UI speed should increase dramatically. However I felt like a bit of a pioneer and hope XUL will be simplified to my level of ineptitude. For some reason simplicity is despised as not real programming. Why? The Ajax hijax will eventually be over as people realise that they are paying with ads and subscription charges for what they used to do on their own machines . . . some services seem a disservice. Digg leads the way in working Ajax. XUL rather than running on a server runs the script on the clients machine, allowing much of the best ideas and code to be available.

That's not really true. Songbird, the new "open iTunes," is based on XULRunner, which is an XUL runtime. While no one has actually written a convincing internet-presence in XUL, that doesn't mean it can't be done. The chat doesn't have to be secure, you aren't supposed to use it for chatting. Its for experimenting.
IE supporting XUL will be like them replacing the UI with KDE or something. IE supporting XUL would be bad. Let them support a camel, I mean XAML - ascheinberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can anyone verify these running on Camino. I'm on Windows now, but Camino doesn't support XUL as far as I know, that is why extensions don't work. This is not about the Gecko engine (which powers Camino), but rather Mozilla itself (which ... er.... doesn't).

Right now these apps are quite old and I haven't seen any new development from the XUL camp, of which I'd very much like to see. Some of those apps looked seamless enough to fool a person not familiar with PCs. Then again maybe I'm just being paranoid.

Tutorials are meant to things, not just tell you what to do! It should explain the 'boring bit' and say what it's for appears to seemlessly blend into the browser.
