- lordtyros, on 10/11/2007, -2/+97Facebook's owners were actually quite right to refuse billion dollar buyout offers. Under their direction, facebook has assimilated the best parts of myspace while retaining its firm control and design sensibilities. This is the best example of "Web 2.0"
- FadieZ, on 10/11/2007, -2/+41Now if only everyone would stop sending me ***** horoscope invitations.
- baldr, on 10/11/2007, -2/+38@jonashwing
Now if only all your hot female friends were actually real people rather than imaginary... - Wilson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20@FadieZ (#7154802)
There should definitely be an Always Ignore button for all application-based invitations. - Tweekster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20the bad ones wont be weeded out, if that concept were true, myspace wouldnt be myspace
People love idiotic crap - n8dawg87, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18totally agreed as well. I was one of the many that thought they were crazy at the time but wow! How much did the facebook platform add in dollar value to facebook?
- jimmiss, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Okay, the applications are good except I get so much GOD DAMNED spam on facebook now its disgusting.
- whatthefu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Well, I'm sick of getting "Video" and "Movie" invitations. There are a good number of cool applications, though. But there are also a lot of really crappy ones.
- rcmurphy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13I wish Facebook would make it possible to move applications to a page separate from your basic profile. I hate having to scroll past stupid and ugly "food fight" and "top friends" applications when I just want to find some basic information or write on a wall.
- ryancxx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Just click the button that looks like the maximize button in windows, it condenses it into a single line.
- ckSubs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Yeah, I agree. Although I like how if you 'minimize' any given app it remains minimized on whichever profiles you go to. Still wish there were a way to have some kind of block list, and NEVER display those applications, not even the little grey'd out bar. Also it's good that they have some "rules" for the apps, like no music playing without first clicking the "play" button. It's like mysace now, but.... good?
- JHaze, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I love facebook, hate myspace, but the one thing i do dislike about the new applications is there are too many duplicates, for example some friends have xpoke some have superpoke and they do the same thing but won't work together, so i chose to have neither.
- inertic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Although facebook isn't as customizable as myspace, all of these new apps and the ability to move them around has facebook look much more cluttered rather than the sleek, clean design it had before.
I really liked facebook when it was only open to colleges, but you can't complain for them trying to expand. - thpntofsngUlrty, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I agree with this analysis. I am sick of myspace and all of it's ridiculous captchas and ads. Facebook totally murders Myspace in functionality and flexibility of user pages. "Web 2.0" is definitely on the rise.
Baldr, that is hilarious... - Alexx3k, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Yeah my exact thought. I think the platform is a brilliant tool, but the way some applications are allowed to spread almost virally is a little anoying. Signing on and finding 7 genereic requests to 'add the flixter app' or the 'top friends app', just because one of my friends added it is a minor, but seemly always present annoyance. I also agree with some other peoples points that the amount of 'badly made' apps is diluting the original appeal of facebook to me; there was a reason why you couldn't embed music into your profile! Though the platform is new, I'm sure we will see some refinements over the next few weeks / months.
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5time to prune your friends list and get rid of those crappy friends using crappy facebook apps.
- ramageki, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7BTW... there are not 1, but 2 LOL Cat apps in FB now.
- RavenBladeX, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5The crappy ones will eventually get weeded out by the people. There are just so many apps that the users are trying all of them to see what works and what doesn't.
- bcos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That blog post was way way way too long.
- alabut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Books? BOOKS?!? They still make those? It's like the betamax version of blogs, right?
- cookiecaper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I like Facebook a lot, and the API's cool, but one of Facebook's best features was that all of the information was laid out right there, simple, fast, and easy. It's always been much, much nicer than braving the inundation of superfluous, exasperating JavaScript, animated gifs, horrifically uncoordinated and straining color themes, and bad pop music that so characterizes MySpace. The way they've implemented the apps at least has the potential to take Facebook several steps closer to becoming that.
Also, the article claims that the Facebook platform is "a dramatic leap forward for the Internet industry", which is at best gross hyperbole. While it's historically almost always been a good idea to provide third-parties with utilities to link into your communities, thereby promoting your brand, the author needs to get out more; the primary argument in support of his aforementioned thesis revolves around the importance of becoming a "platform" instead of a staying a lowly "application", a feat which many community-driven web sites accomplished many moons back. As cool as an SDK for Facebook is, it's nothing even remotely like a landmark for web technology. - LeegleechN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's technically not 100% grammatically correct to use "they", but there's really no other option. It's better than assuming a gender or saying "he or she".
- Teanuh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Facebook will never be MySpace, that's for sure, but though it still keeps with its usual style, people are abusing the apps and overloading their pages with them, it's annoying.
- HyperNexus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I just registered for Facebook a week or so ago and some the applications are excellent. I am just a bit concerned with developers hosting thier own application. Some developers might shy away from Facebook application just due to the chance it becomes too popular.
I found that article excellent and very well written. - albiniak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"might shy away from facebook"
dude, this in insane!
"'We just emailed everybody we know across over a dozen Bay Area startups, corporations, and venture firms in a desperate plea to find spare servers so we can triple our capacity for the continued onslaught. Tomorrow we are picking up over 100 servers from different companies to have them installed just to handle the weekend's traffic. (For those who responded to our late night pleas, thank you!)'
Yesterday, about two weeks later, ILike announced that they have passed 3 million users on Facebook and are still growing -- at a rate of 300,000 users per day.
They didn't say how many servers they're running, but if you do the math, it has to be in the hundreds and heading into the thousands."
scale much? - mojaam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"The developer then registers her application with Facebook"
I see, so nowdays, a developer is female by default. Beside that though, great and informative article. - doshindude, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4A lot of the Facebook apps suck. A bunch are good (the more basic ones like Video, Files, and Music), but Facebook is starting to turn into myspace with the rise of badly made applications like "Trakzor" and "Fortune Cookie" that mainly are for pure spam.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think the platform should have been closed. IE make it and make it good and if the facebook dev team likes it enough they will approve it for public use. This way instead of their being 5 apps to do the same thing there would be only one.
- Tweekster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Massively annoying. 99% of the applications are stupid and everyone invites you to inane crap
- goob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Agreed. Who the hell read all that?
http://www.facebooktalk.com - smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1cksubs, start a group if there isn't one already. facebook is a pretty democratic site, and they do listen to their users and respond pretty quickly to user complaints, as could be seen with the initial news feed user backlash. i would totally join a petition for such a feature btw.
- LeegleechN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Once the platform matures, all similarly functional apps will probably consolidate out and there will be a small number of clear winners (kind of like IM programs now).
- AUChizad, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I've been on the facebook bandwagon since its inception about 3 years ago.
Even before I was on Myspace which I've been on for over 2 years.
In the South at least, Facebook has always been the more popular of the two.
Because it used to only be available to those with a valid college e-mail address, a good comparison would be that it is the bar with the classier clientele, while Myspace is the hole in the wall where all the skanks in stonewash jean shorts hang out.
If the people who's page takes 45 minutes to load with broadband because of all the glittery gifs and 4 videos that run simultaneously weren't annoying enough, those who fill out their bulletin 15 times a day to inform me that if I do the same I can save a girl dying of spinal meningitis because the doctors with the cure are running a social expiriment on MySpace will be enough. I get about 15 fake porn myspace friend requests a day. And as of just recently I have actually been getting penis enlargement ads on freaking myspace.
I get more spam on Myspace now than hotmail. - alabut, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Yeah, using "she" like that drives me nuts. Hasn't anyone heard of using "they" instead? It's perfectly legal and grammatically correct to use the plural pronoun in English, so the sentence should be:
"The developer then registers THEIR application with Facebook." - mydave, on 07/29/2008, -0/+0This is a story whose moral has historically not been embraced by the web industry to nearly the extent one would have thought.

- decay, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Facebook is an great designed website that just keeps getting better and better. Sometimes people go overboard with the groups but w.e floats you boat.
I wanna meet some diggers, add me?

EDIT: crap how are there two of me....
I'm the one with the pic. - froinlaven, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2"the developer writes a web application and hosts it on her own servers."
Did you mean his own servers? - garths, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0I'll try plugging my facebook app here. It lets you keep track of books you are reading, and look through books your friends have read, and write reviews of them. Give it a try.

- lulax3, on 10/11/2007, -10/+1Im a facebook purist. It was better before all the damn clutter and new apps. Now everytime I log in I have 10 invites to some retarded apps. I'm all for new stuff but I liked Fbook the way it was before. I am now considering closing my account. Too much clutter that's why I don't have myspace.
- ufobsession, on 10/11/2007, -12/+1For $1,000,000 dollars: if Facebook is growing at 100,000 members a day, and one trains leaves Cincinnati at 12:20 PM while another leaves Boston at 3:00 AM, and a tree falls in the forest with no one around to hear it, then...
...MySpace still sucks. Yes Regis, that is my final answer. - jackyyll, on 10/11/2007, -13/+1Crap, i dugg you down by accident :(
- jonashwing, on 10/11/2007, -31/+2Agreed. Now if only all my hot female friends had facebook accounts...
