- sundancekid503, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I bet it's a sequel to Duke Nukem Forever
- KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Introducing: *drumroll* The blank page!
- mvandemar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Quick... prove you're a geek... what's the difference between a programmer and a software engineer?
- dupswapdrop, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4I do what your doing in a hour.
- tuzziel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I am so into "my cash flow" web apps. Thats why I am using my disk encryption software, to keep it all public.
-sarcasm - saigumi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3In this day and age, that isn't all that hard. I'm going to keep tabs on this one because the idea behind it is completely possible with the tools out there. I really enjoyed the group that deployed a new internet app in a day. 7 of them created, marketed, and sold the application for a few thousand dollars in a 24 hour period a few years ago. The app was just some meta-search engine, but did meet all their goals and did sell.
Nowadays, with the frameworks out there, developers worry less about the implementation and more about the functionality making it easy to go from nothing to deployment in a very short timeframe.
In two weeks with RubyOnRails I made a league tracking system that allows authorization level controls and updates games and rankings along with letting players challange and message each other, upload session reports and pictures. Charts and graphs for players as well as what they would have to do in relation to what others are doing to be able to win certain awards. It also allows team customized signatures and logos, keeps a history of previous leagues (as awards can only be won once per player throughout the year). Load balancing and server maximization testing is done continually. Full Unit and User testing is done as well, with users being very rabid gamers. This week, I should be done with the genericization to track different league scoring system, billing (admins pay a small fee to remove ads from league pages) and ad interfaces. After that, cleaup of the layout to make sure it looks as Web 2.0'y as I can get (though right now it looks a lot like Google Spreadsheet) and start marketing it.
And this is stuffed in between my family (2 young kids with extracurricular activities), my 40 hour a week day job and my moonlighting job of owning a chain of board game stores as well as that I don't think I am some sort of "Rock Star" developer. - mvandemar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Guys, c'mon... it's not like they're claiming it has to be bug free or anything... of course this is doable.
- swrainey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Railroads have kept up with the advancement of technology the Software Engineer is an automated program that drives a train... programmer makes the software.
- swrainey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I am also one of the developers on this.
Developing web applications has gotten a whole lot better over the past few years. We get to spend a lot more time thinking through things from a user perspective because we are spending less time coding.
We are doing this project to share our typical process for making applications. This is something people have expressed a lot of interest in. We are interested in others methods as well. The three of us are covering different tasks and are not necessarily working simultaneously. I personally think it's mostly about discussing our process and methods during this month time period. We are also interested in discussing other people's methods. Also at the end of it we hope to have a helpful free tool for small businesses.
I do think there are a lot of bases to be covered in the next month: Concepts, Mock-ups, Screens, Alterations, Development, Testing, Launch and we'll also cover branding and a simple front end website for it.
Considering everything else we have going on I think it's a good pace that will keep people interested. If we decided to do this in a shorter time period, I don't think we'd be happy with the results or with the discussion we are hoping to have.
I'm be interested to see what you come up with when you put it out to the public. Drop us a note when you do. - ileadyouth, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2onehourapp.com is still open. By all means...
- nateklaiber, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I am one of the developers and I just dugg both comments up. Yes, they are typical digg comments, but I will digg them to see if anyone can back up their claims of 'this takes three people?' and 'I do what your doing in an hour'.
Nothing wrong with claims - just back it up with some action or reasoning. - Kwashiorkor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0They could probably do it even faster if there were just one of them working on it...
- disabled4diggin, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Will anyone thats not a programmer or software engineer give a ***** about this?
- Error601, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3They need three people to do that? Lame.
