- chime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nifty but I don't understand the use for it. Why not simply link to the Wikipedia? After all, it pulls the data from there anyway. Here's how to make Gollum useful and practical:
1) Get data from multiple sources in different [ajaxy] tabs: Wikipedia, Google, Dictionary, IMDB, Answers.com etc. So that when I link to (http://gollum.easycp.de/?l=en&wl=de&init=1&q=Gollum) it actually searches everything without me having to manually search.
2) Make it easy to specify/add new sources. Sometimes I want it to search popular sources like Wiki/Google, but other times, maybe I want it to search Yahoo Locals or Froogle? By adding "&engines=google, froogle, wikipedia" parameter Gollum can be much more useful.
3) Since Wikipedia search sucks, why not search Google with "'phrase' + site:wikipedia.org" in case Wikipedia says article not found? That would really be awesome as I often have troubles finding the correct Wikipedia page. For example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_man (The man) fails but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man (The Man) works. Gollum could definitely help with case-sensitivity.
4) This could be difficult/expensive but what about caching some frequently searched stuff on Gollum server or using Wikipedia mirrors?
I haven't looked at the code but if he makes it easy to setup on your own server, then (http://myserver.com/gollum/?l=en&wl=de&init=1&q=the+man) would do everything and without costing him anything. Then my server can cache Wiki search-terms (mostly computer definitions) that I include in my tech blog entries and your server can cache IMDB info on movies. People don't leave your server, you don't use a lot of bandwidth from Wiki/IMDB/etc. and things load up much faster. - FiveIron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2although it's a cool idea, its just completely impractical, it doesn't add anything to my wikipedia experience, plus I can't use multiple tabs in it, which is something I always do when browsing wikipedia
- obscurelyfamous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Neat little project (though I seem to love anything Ajax), but I haven't found any practicality in it yet. I'd rather use Wikipedia through my web browser, easily.
- gollumbrowser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The mousewheel problem is an bug in firefox.

thanks for all constructional criticisms. In the following an example how to implement Gollum in your Homepage:
Gollum
Greetings from Germany
Harald - Junx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>great for bypassing school filters =d
You mean things like cgiproxy? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1check this out:
http://wiki.lumrix.net/en/
It's like google suggest.
Also using gollum I can't use the right mouse menu or my mouse scroll wheel. - trampish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1neat. but useless. however its a very clean and 'standardized' interface. not something i would use but it could be used as a basis for fetching information from sites that, unlike wikipedia, have ***** layouts and ads. something this for myspace would be cool. all the info, no ads and no stupid flashing gifs!
i'm currently working on moving my education-centered intranet from PHP and refreshes to AJAX powered goodness. it is great making everything cleaner and faster.
Speaking of AJAX... check out this great tutorial if any of you are interested in learning to use and implement the basics:

Cheers! - cacoyi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent: An innovative/fast way for me to browse wikipedia from behind the great china firewall.
- fyre2012, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yah, seems pretty useless to me.
it's neet that it's 'doable' with the whole omgIT'SAJAXIFIEDZ0RZ@@!! trend, but i fail to see any benefits. - JonathanAquino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe the useful thing about having a browser within a browser is that your settings/extensions/customizations go with you no matter what computer you are on. Also, if it supported tabbed browsing, you could go to it if you were limited to a computer with IE.
- shooby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, like that and phpproxy
- jdgtrplyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually really like the idea of it, but the comments speak true. Why not just go to Wikipedia.org? Easier, quicker, and no browser within a browser. What's the point in that anyways?
- kvidell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As many others have said, I think it's a neat idea... but the problem with it is infact that it's rather impractical.
It's a bit sluggish for my taste, and I also like to middle click on links inside of a page I'm reading to read more on a topic, or fork to other related/interesting topics.
May be useful for other things, but wikipedia need not be trifled with in such ways. - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what is the point of this? a browser inside a browser? why?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very neat idea. But no real practical use. It does clean up wikipedia content a bit, but other than that its really limited.
- gklitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks too much like IE. But still good as a proof of concept.
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The whole point of this Ajax Browers that I could be done.
- gollumbrowser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Placeopedia - pbjorge12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It seems useful for Schools...Students could use this and only the most tech savvy could leave the *insert learning website hear* to play games!

USELESS... I do the same on my own FF - topcc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hehe ,divertingness
- danimal247, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's the point? Nice excercise but no digg
- uberwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no spot on the site for comments -- I hope the author finds this :)
Safari works just fine, and it's a great tool for dedicated access -- libraries could benefit from Gollum, as well as elementary and secondary schools... - shooby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you know where this technology could be used? Some sort of proxy server that would download a website and then use the power of ajax to present it to you
great for bypassing school filters =d - gollumbrowser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, it's a problem to Display code.
Here is a link to an example: http://www.gollum-browser.com/example.php - Guano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's with the name?
- kris2pe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahhh What the point u can't used this w/o a browser r8?
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0agreed with the first comment ... it's cool, but it's rather pointless
- macboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The linkes to anchors in the comments don't work. kinda pointless.
- matthewsnape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can see uses for it. It could allow you to include wikipedia pages in a site without linking directly to wikipedia. So you could customize the view of the information to a particular need.
On my connection it is faster than standard wikipedia.
I don't see why it needs its own browser controls. It would be better if it didn't break the browsers own control. - gollumbrowser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://gollum.easycp.de/example.php
- mydave, on 07/26/2008, -0/+0oh interesting story. and I wonder how does it work?

And no mouse wheel support? - CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it was done to simplify users browsing experience, he mentions his daughter on his homepage. At first glance I was a little "why?" about it too.
- CathyDW, on 07/07/2008, -0/+0I'm trying to find out where this browser inside a browser is. I'm looking for a website that I can browse the web inside the website. At work I'm not allowed to visit so many sites and this would be a very good way to go to the websites I want!
- fridge2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AJAXIMIFIED!
- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if you got in to stay fixed fullscreen(f11) and disabled the "open url" command, would be a nice research tool in libraries. Otherwise, i can't see an obvious use
- mydave, on 08/02/2008, -0/+0good idea, but it need to test. I think it will be very nice.

- muhgcee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Comments here are of the form: "Neat project, except for the fact that it is completely useless."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0it is *****, 100% pointless. lame!
- clf99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i just don't get it
