Web Developer is a must !!! - zyklon, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22I guess Web Developer isn't a notable mention?
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60
It combines the functions of all the rest of those extensions mentioned. I'm kind of mad anyway about the entire post. Clocks? How the ***** does that help one write a page? Someone's not too bright. - Bulk70, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Webdeveloper tool bar + firebug is all you need - the rest is bs page filler
- Beaver6813, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Thats kinda of incorporated into firebug... it displays all CSS that influences a certain tag you select and allows you to view external files included.
- mattmcm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9FireFTP deserves a spot on that list. Highly useful for uploading files without needing an external client.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/684 - canthraxp, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Oh, I missed another great extension:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419
IE Tab, nice little tool to switch between rendering engines, makes easy to test a website with Firefox and IE. - Jeffrey903, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6If you use Web Developer https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60 and hit "Ctrl + Shift + F" or "Tools -> Web Developer -> Information -> Display Element Information", you will get the same functionality.
- herkalees, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Firebug mostly, and a dash of the Web Developer's Toolbar, is all.
- Ag3ntOrang3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5How did Web developer get left out of this list? Buried for missing an obvious extension that should have been number 1 or 2 on that list.
- MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9'CSSViewer' should be included in this
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2104 - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Nice list, but FameMoney nailed it: Web Developer toolbar. I use it multiple times every day.
- legendxx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5lol no.. firebug is all you need. It lets you disable css properties on the fly and even edit them.
after rtfa'ing this list is horrible. - mcprogrammer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You've apparently never used Firebug then.
- Scatropolis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah, if you use Firebug hit "inspect" and mouse over anything of interest.
- closer9, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4how about this link instead: http://www.getfirebug.com/
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3They do completely different things, so no.
- adamdigg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4No need for a pissing match. Firebug is great, but it doesn't do everything the Web Developer extension does. It's reasonable to use both extensions for different tasks (which is what I do).
- serra, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Don't forget autocopy, that's a kick ass extension for anyone who works on the web. Used it all the time at Amazon.com
- dexterholland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Probably had this come up 10 times on Digg. The best list I've found: http://blog.sherifmansour.com/?p=34
with reviews of the "Top 10 Firefox extensions for web developers" - Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2...and DOM Snapshot, on the same page: http://dev.opera.com/tools/
- Verdanic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I'm kind of wondering how that wasn't included.
- yomanfu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2For those using *a lot* of tabs at the same time, http://paranoid-androids.com/tabgroups/ is a must. In fact, as a web developer, I couldn't work without it.
I often have more than 20 tabs opened at the same time. With this extension, I can split them into 5 groups:
localhost | dev | dev2 | prod | other
For each of the first groups, I have at the very least: one or two test page, one phpMyAdmin page and an error log page.
I browse Digg from the "other" tab! - MrDo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Bah, what about "Tamper Data"? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/966
It is really good to figure out why a site is loading slow. fx if someone has added a object to the page from a third-party site that takes a long time to fetch - troyfoley, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/539
MeasureIt... I use it all the time. - insanebrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1View source chart . . :) thanx. .dugg!!
- ishmal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Does the latest Firebug handle the latest nightly Firefox(3.0x)/Gecko(1.9.x) ? I keep getting errors because of their stricter security.
- canthraxp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Web developer is the best web-developer (ok, redundancy) extension for firefox. Usually, when I work with JS and Divs, some divs just pop out of the visible area, or are invisibile/behind other thing, with web developer you can just turn on the "Outline Custom Element -> div" and then is possible to fix those annoying issues.
The only extension useful there, is the View Source Chart. - astanhope, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Colorful Tabs
CoolIris
DownThemAll
GoToSelection
PicLens
Clusty - diemunkiesdie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Tab mix plus beats faviconize tab any day! You can tell it to make the minimum size 22 pixels for a tab, plus you get better session saving than the built in one for firefox, undo close tab, undo close window, and more!
What was with that clock stuff? Who the hell needs that? - closer9, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Surprisingly, I don't see this extension on a lot of "OMG! Must have..." lists. I don't know if people think its to complicated, or if they just don't know how to make it useful. I use it every single day as a web developer... it is _by far_ the most useful web extension for Firefox.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5Firebug is my favorite for debugging...
http://www.firebug.com - Quakes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Try it out. While Firebug can do some of the things that Webdeveloper can do, Webdeveloper toolbar still has a lot of good stuff in it. Take it for a test spin. I personally use both. Firebug is awesome, especially for javascript. :)
- Xsecrets, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Just curious seen many people in the comments talk about this extension, just wondering what it has that firebug (which the article does mention) does not do better? I took a quick glance at the description, and it just seemed like a more disjointed and complex firebug.
- sus3k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Web Developer Tool bar and Firebug are all you need.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It does something similar, but for completely different ends.
The outlining gives you very quick visual feedback on how common some particular elements are, and how they're distributed. This can give you quite a few useful hints for your choice in cascading and element selection techniques in CSS for instance. - ilovenicotine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1close, but not all I need, colorzilla is insanely useful
- mcprogrammer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree that web developer is a useful extension (I use it all the time). I'm just saying the View Source Chart extension isn't the only useful one on the list.
- Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1See, this kind of math issue is what's wrong with our schools today.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The trick (imo) with WebDev is its toggle functionality. It allows you to slap a number of different JS and CSS files onto a single page, and then quickly switch between which ones are used by the browser, allowing you very fast side-by-side comparisons between different solutions you've considered.
- socialidiocy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Web Developer Tool has that built in...
- adamdigg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1YellowPipe Lynx viewer Tool - good for checking how your page looks to screen readers and search engines.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1944
Bookmark Sync and Sort - not strictly for developers, but we do tend to have a lot of bookmarks. I like to have them all available wherever I am.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2367
Split Pannel - If you ever need two or more pages visible for comparison, reference, etc., this does it gracefully.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3275 - starkraving, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1+1 for Web Developer. I also use the HTML Tidy Add-On as well.
- ishmal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's not a webdev tool, but my favorite little extension is TinyUrl Creator. A simple right-click on any page, and the Tiny URL is copied to the paste buffer. Elegant in its simplicitly.
- ScottyWZ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1World clocks can help when you're working with people overseas, so you can figure out when would be the best time to contact them.
- msbabc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Colorzilla is a fantastic one for sure.
But basically this list is about twice as big as it needs to be. - chess64, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Err, why don't you just open separate windows for those groups? You don't have to have _everything_ in one window...
- farzan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0These are my extensions, in order of Importance:
1. Firebug
2. Web Developer Toolbar
3. TamperData - Let you view and change outgoing Requests - I Love This One!
4. ColorZilla
5. Live HTTP Headers - Dumps headers.
6. MeasureIt - a simple ruler and measurement tool.
7. SourceEditor - Displays source of selected elements. FireBug does not show the real source sometimes.
View Cookies - micwallo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0HTML validator - Do (X)HTML/CSS validation locally
Web Developer - Convenient way to view external CSS/JS and provide many useful functions
Firebug - The most powerful debug tools on JS and CSS with the most better user experience - yogastore, on 06/30/2008, -0/+0http://astore.amazon.com/calphalon.commercial-20
