- xythian, on 11/14/2008, -5/+173Notepad++ is a godsend.
- blank89, on 11/14/2008, -11/+95What??!! No vim??!!
- TheFounder, on 11/14/2008, -16/+92How dare you forget vi ! ... I know most coders have had to use that at least sometimes when they are logged into the webserver....
- TheMandibleClaw, on 11/14/2008, -4/+63What about gVIM ?
How can emacs make the list and no VI .... or textpad for that matter. - Andy5925, on 11/14/2008, -5/+49I am a vim man myself
- atrus123, on 11/14/2008, -8/+46No VIM means list = fail.
- sirloxelroy, on 11/14/2008, -4/+29VI, or Vim and a console :-) or gVim, kvim that is all I need :-)
- benbrooks101, on 11/14/2008, -5/+29No nano?
- Snarfy, on 11/14/2008, -6/+29I see Emacs but no VI.
FAIL - HaloZero, on 11/14/2008, -5/+28VIM is a necessity if you do anything on a terminal without a GUI.
- Jektal, on 11/14/2008, -1/+24I like Notepad2:
http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html
It's tiny and works great - inactive, on 11/14/2008, -3/+23Conspiracy. This was written by an emacs fanboy. The whole article was written to shaft VI. Bastards!
- karltonDance, on 11/14/2008, -0/+18I second that! The built in "compare" plugin (which does a visual side by side diff) is great
- stevensj2, on 11/14/2008, -0/+17PSPad is another option to be considered.
- Munceenuts, on 11/14/2008, -2/+19That's what she said.
- DyceFreak, on 11/14/2008, -4/+20thats what I was thinking...
bury for a list of text editors that does not include VIM... the water of text editors.
that and I find Notepad2 better than Notepad++ for its lightweight straitforward abilities. - Visual77, on 11/14/2008, -0/+14Even with a GUI, I still have come to prefer vim. It's complex and not exactly intuitive, but when my sole source of income depends on coding and programming, it's worth my while to familiarize myself with the advanced functions of these kinds of programs.
- worminater, on 11/14/2008, -2/+16I logged in specifically to bury this for not having vim or some variant listed.
- Thoku, on 11/14/2008, -3/+16No gVim or KATE??!
- orev, on 11/14/2008, -4/+17An editor that allows you to keep your hands on the keyboard at all times is the opposite of a carpal tunnel inducer. In fact, editors that force you to move your hand to the mouse all the time are the worst culprits.
- DyceFreak, on 11/14/2008, -2/+14anyone who does not list VIM in a list of excellent free text editors, is in no position to rate text editors... period..
- so1omon, on 11/14/2008, -0/+10@Smuikas - You know... if you had SSH access, then you had SFTP access. Also, what the hell kind of system ONLY has nano installed? I don't know of any flavor of Linux or Unix that doesn't come with vi by default.
- nyde, on 11/14/2008, -5/+14Excellent list! Although NOT free I'd also like to suggest Textmate for Mac it's easy to use and very intuitive.
- jggube, on 11/14/2008, -1/+10Agreed!
- jaderobbins, on 11/14/2008, -5/+13No vim means no digg!!!
- scuba7183, on 11/14/2008, -5/+13Eclipse is where its at!!
- xs650, on 11/14/2008, -1/+9Where's Edlin?
- wolfing, on 11/14/2008, -1/+9I love Notepad++. The only drawback is that it doesn't support large files, I use Textpad for those
- chewbacca77, on 11/14/2008, -0/+8Really? I've opened up 100MB+ files without a hitch.
- cutchyacokov, on 11/14/2008, -0/+7Really? They shafted Kate too? Missing Vi and all variants was bad enough. I'm not even going to read this now.
- jaasum, on 11/14/2008, -0/+7Dugg for Smultron
- jlgosse, on 11/14/2008, -2/+9You could not be further from the truth. It is much more than a text editor only because it can compile your code, run servers, manage projects, use source control and run tests. Not to mention it has hundreds of plug-ins. Speaking of plug-ins, they generally allow support for almost all popular languages. Need I say more?
- slickwatson, on 11/14/2008, -1/+8vi por vida!!!!
- dack42, on 11/14/2008, -1/+8How would VIM cause carpal tunnel? It requires less movement than any other text editor I've seen. Is there any other text editor out there where you don't have to move to the arrow keys or mouse all the time? Plus there's all the keystroke reducing macro/scripting/regex things that many simpler editors don't have.
Or did you mean that VIM will fail to cause carpal tunnel? - randydaytona, on 11/14/2008, -0/+7I agree. Its my primary text editor at work.
- midtown, on 11/14/2008, -0/+6The article is about text editors not IDEs.
- bradleyland, on 11/14/2008, -2/+8I'd shoot myself if I had to use nano on a daily basis. How the hell do you get anything done?
- hummerbliss, on 11/14/2008, -5/+11Buried no vi. Seriously WTF.
- jotux, on 11/14/2008, -0/+6Some of us use languages other than VB.
- sexybobo, on 11/14/2008, -5/+11I know I will loose geek cred but I prefer nano over VI or EMACS.
nano is small works like you think it should and has all the important instructions at the bottom of the window. True it can not do as much as VI or EMACS but if i ever need to do anything beyond changing a config file I ftp it down and work on it in an editor with a gui. - x713, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5I personally love using Komodo.
- need4speed, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5vi > every editor out here
don't even mention emacs. we are talking about editors not an OS! - KhalilRavanna, on 11/14/2008, -1/+6Dugg for Notepad++.
- kevisazombie, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5omg I didn't know this existed.
- tnwake, on 11/14/2008, -5/+10Ha, if only I had a nickel for every time I heard the phrase "It doesn't work on a mac".. then I'd have more than enough $$ to actually afford one of those overpriced things :)
- liljay2k, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5If your not looking for something as robust as Notepad++, then I would suggest Notepad2 http://www.notepad2.com/
- chesterjosiah, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5I've been using Notepad++ for 4 years now, it's my favorite. I love the Ctrl+R regular expression tool!
- peaceninja, on 11/14/2008, -1/+6Notepad2 is better than any of those. Regular Expressions are integrated in the most simplest and thorough way possible, and the application is lightweight. And it highlights syntax depending on what kind of file is being opened.
- johncoswell, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5Notepad++ and Smultron are great, but Kate's where it's at for me. I wish it worked better on Windows, though (via KDE for Windows).
- the2989, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4I talked my professor into installing Notepad++ onto all the computers in the classroom, and now he uses it also.
