"How so? According to AAA, U.S. gasoline prices now average about $1.67 a gallon. Funny, that’s almost exactly what gas cost on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. In the wake of 9/11, President Bush had the political space to impose a gasoline tax, a “Patriot Tax,” to weaken the very people who had funded 9/11 and to stimulate a U.S. renewable-energy industry. But Bush wimped out and would not impose a tax when prices were low or a floor price when they got high." - MsLaurel, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2Kicking the Oil Habit would keep billions of dollars in our local economies, buying locally-produced electricity, and that means local wind/solar-related jobs, and that means more people with money to spend in the local economy, resulting in a more prosperous local economy.
- shylove, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2It is simpler than that. Build mass transit systems between all cities and rental electric destination cars and let everyone that wants a car drive what they want. Get rid of the car necessity fetish. The city bus systems aren't making it but rental electric cars might because they would be flexible for the cities we have designed, otherwise we have to redesign the cities for mass transit. Cars aren't our future anyway, time to bail on cars not bailout cars and urging a 50's interstate car society on China is suicidal!!
