- northwatuppa, on 05/13/2009, -3/+33fta: Perez Hilton, who I am now terming a vile sodomite . . . yeah, Perez, you’re a vile sodomite – doesn’t that word have a ring to it – sodomite -- and vile – vile sodomite – it just sounds so good to hear in my headphones – vile sodomite . . . . I’m not sure whose idea it was to have an overweight homosexual . . . What do gays constitute? They could announce the cure for AIDS on Logo and nobody would know for two weeks . . . And again, Perez Hilton, you’re a vile sodomite . . . and then this vile sodomite . . .
The author quotes a rightwing hate talk show host, above.
You know, this quote is actually kind of boring and predictable, like they have a computer program that can crank it out, or an instruction book that tells them how to do it.
Hate by the numbers. - MiddleAmerica, on 05/13/2009, -5/+33
The hate & bigotry seems to appeal to an ignorant part of the population who wants people to act like their "championing" something by screaming, over acting & vilifying.
Often this appeals to end-timers, the far right of evangelicalism.
I have grown-up & spent the majority of my life in the South East & live in a small town out in the country as we speak.
You can't turn on AM radio in the South without finding a pastor screaming this stuff on one channel, & a Republican screaming this stuff on another.
And there are entire TV channels devoted to the end-timer extremist Christian religious dogma (DirecTV).
I'm a news junky & I've noticed in many, many polls over the years that about 20-25% of the country seems to fall into this far right category, which hopefully will decline. But as we've recently heard that about 20% of Americans now call themselves proud Republicans, & I believe its these far right wingers that are that 20% & are essentially the GOP's base.
Its the Palin crowd, rednecks, ignorant, & often bible thumpers / end-timers.
I know them well, some are life-long friends, but I did lose my best friend about 17 years ago when we realized that we'd become adults & that we agreed on nothing, so without any harsh words decided not to be friends anymore. The little town I live in is fully populated with these folks, who are generally good hearted, honest, hard working people.
The GOP has a serious flaw in their party & that's this base. If they appeal to them they are the same nutty party we saw during the election & during the tea party protests. If the GOP moves towards reality in the center, they disenfranchise that base.
Plus they've pissed off real conservatives (again) & what moderates & independents that used to vote for them. I mean hell, Bill Clinton has been the most fiscally conservative President in the last 28 years or more!
The GOP is basically screwed.
All they have left is hate, bigotry, bible thumping, lies, smears, big fat cat business & propaganda.
Not much to make a political party out of.
- frostbyt, on 05/13/2009, -2/+24I do listen to AM talk radio just to listen to them twist in the wind about everything. Oh they cry and moan everyday about this and that. Then they "predict" what is to come and how they will stop it. Finally they finish off with how the economy will look bright just about the time the election comes around again.
Truly entertaining. - AdeleMor, on 05/13/2009, -1/+21very apt comment. i spend a lot of time here and i'm always surprised at the sheer quantity of unadulterated bigoted crap that piles up in the comment sections
- trolleyfan, on 05/13/2009, -3/+20Simplest reason the right has collapsed is that they're almost always wrong...and eventually, someone noticed.
- beautifulady, on 05/13/2009, -1/+15You forgot the two wars they got us into, the torture and secret prisons, and the domestic spying without a warrant.
- trolleyfan, on 05/13/2009, -4/+14"Two wars? You don't like us defending ourselves after Sept 11, do ya?"
Hey dum dum. Terrorists are *criminals*. You use *police* to handle *criminals* not the ***** army.
The *army* is for fighting other *armies* - which terrorists *aren't* - though Bush's policies *have* almost increased their numbers up to that level.
This is very simple, why do you have such a problem with it? - CaptOblivious, on 05/14/2009, -1/+9140Suffolk et al;
Ya, Um minor problem, ALL THE HIJACKERS WERE SAUDI as is Bin Laden, the mastermind of the assault.
But we didn't invade Saudi Arabia did we wingnut? - beautifulady, on 05/13/2009, -3/+10If you really think those "wars" are about fighting terrorism, I think you need to be enlightened.
We all know that Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11, yet that was the justification of the Bush administration for the war on Iraq.
As for Afghanistan, how much death and destruction has taken place there already, and how interesting that no one can seem to find Osama bin Laden. Buf what a great idea, to build a whole bunch of big military bases all along the route of a planned pipeline carrying gas and oil through the region to India, Pakistan and China. Guess who will control that pipeline, and the fossil fuel in it? The United Hegemonic States of America.
The War on Terror is bogus. A few hundred loony badasses do not justify tearing up entire countries. Fighting terrorism has become a very lucrative pastime for the big US subcontractors, soldiers for hire. It will be huge profits for the oil and gas industry. It will keep America in its position as world superpower. So what if a few million people, mostly Muslims, end up dead. The US economy is the most important thing in the world, literally, and war always keeps the economy afloat. That is what Obama "gets." - Acewrap, on 05/14/2009, -1/+8Suffolk, you need to watch less 24.
- trolleyfan, on 05/13/2009, -3/+9Or, to further simplify: "Defend Oneself" is *not* semantically equal to "Start a War."
- anstice85, on 05/14/2009, -1/+7It was really funny to witness the change before and after the election. Before, they demanded that Bush get respect just because he was President and anyone who protested against him was an unpatriotic, unemployed idiot. After the election, they refuse to acknowledge that Obama is President (he's either referred to as 'Messiah', 'The One', 'Barack HUSSEIN Obama', etc.) and hail tea party protesters as true patriotic Americans. Also, they are now incredibly outraged by Obama's supposed out of control fiscal irresponsibility, whereas Bush's was fine.
I love how they're trying to switch roles but are going about it really awkwardly. Hannity's show's motto is something like 'Conservative underground! Conservatism in exile!' Oooh, the dark and scary CONSERVATIVE UNDERGROUND. Glenn Beck can't get through a segment without bursting into tears. They aren't used to being the minority in any way, so they fumble a lot, but I'm sure they'll perfect the victim-expressing-faux-outrage role soon enough. - MiddleAmerica, on 05/14/2009, -3/+9
I'd like to add that the biggest problem is right-wing misinformation propaganda.
If it weren't for misinformation propagandists brainwashing trusting folks, we wouldn't be in the situations that we're in.
The data is there for historians & anyone who wants to spend the time...
- anstice85, on 05/14/2009, -0/+6"when you call for talk radio to be shut down for "hate" speech"
Who did this? - beautifulady, on 05/14/2009, -1/+6@captoblivious, I am acquainted with suffolk, he just hates Muslims and never misses an opportunity to say something accusatory and hateful.
Sure, suffolk, we're all waiting for those nukes. All "jihadis" know how to use them. They're born knowing all the nuclear weapons technology. That's why those Saudi lunatics flew passenger jets on 9/11. You think they're all just illiterate jerks riding around in the mountains in Afghanistan on donkeys, but each one of them is actually a nuclear physicist. They wear special hats that help them pick up communications from their special satellite in outer space. Every one of them knows your name, too.
/s (in case anyone besides suffolk believes me) - DankBuddz, on 05/14/2009, -0/+5Actually we're here discussing the blind and ignorant hatred Mark Levin has for gays, and the hateful drivel that comes from the right. None of your points relate to anything in this thread.
As for whatever else you're talking about, I have no idea. Keep playing the victim, its working out for you.
PS - I don't force anyone to participate in my "idealism", nor does anyone else. Stop being dramatic. - Acewrap, on 05/14/2009, -1/+5The truth has a liberal bias.
- firesphotons, on 05/14/2009, -1/+5Because the right is seldom right, bunch of religious zealots attempting to foist their paradigms on everyone else, it's supposed to be a free society so please, stuff your phony self serving religion...
- DankBuddz, on 05/14/2009, -3/+6The notion that Taliban could obtain a nuclear weapon, much less have the means to actually reach us with a nuke is just complete right wing brainwashing. You need to learn something about the nature and logistics of nuclear weapons.
Study some physics, or turn off the radio and get an education. Its sad to see someone believe all that *****. - DankBuddz, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3So are you putting me in a box as a democrat?
Someone so enlightened should realize the fact that just because I disagree with ***** hate mongering right wing radio, doesn't mean I'm a democrat.
I'm guessing you're a right leaning libertarian. Definitely not a republican. - DankBuddz, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3I wouldn't mind sitting down and taking a puff, as long as you don't mind left-libertarian ideologies, lol.
- anstice85, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3Norman, people still have the right to free speech. They still have the right to say any offensive or non-offensive thing that they want. If they choose not to, it isn't because of some movement that "paralyzed" them. THEY made the choice.
- TheSwashbuckler, on 05/14/2009, -2/+5"Why are they ignoring the fact that the left (Democratic party) is shriking as well?"
Maybe because it is NOT a fact.
Read the chart and weep you Republican whiner: http://pewresearch.org/pubs/773/fewer-voters-ident ... - Gndoab, on 05/14/2009, -2/+5I'd love for these people to start debating on what, specifically what, they don't like about other people, rather than branding "liberals are evil!" "Nobody cares about gays!" "Democrats are destroying this country!"
as soon as I hear any kind of blanket statement like that (coming from any side of the political spectrum) I tune out.
Maybe then policy issues could actually get brought up instead of danced around, and there wouldn't be such defined groups as there are now, since people would have to take their own stance. - DankBuddz, on 05/14/2009, -1/+4FTA: "I’m not sure whose idea it was to have an overweight homosexual . . . "
I'm not sure whose idea it was to have an ugly bald heterosexual talk about politics.
Not to mention, Maddow's intellect is at a level far beyond any level the likes of Levin and Limbaugh will ever reach. - kanojo1969, on 05/14/2009, -1/+4Me neither. But ranting about 'vile sodomites', especially if you're a public voice, is just repugnant.
It's got nothing to do with being PC, or whatever the modern term for that is. It's a fundamental failure to be able to criticise someone with an actual argument. You should have your own standards, standards of decency at the core of which is the idea that you don't treat people in ways you yourself wouldn't want to be treated.
It doesn't matter if they are Mother Teresa or Hitler, you rise above them by keeping your standards intact, even if you're ripping them a new one while doing it.
But because of the rampant anti-intellectualism in society in general and in "serious" Christians particularly, these guys on the radio are able to get support for vapid name-calling instead of actual critical thinking.
I don't see the end of this trend coming for a long time yet. They have huge support in certain areas and as long as the money comes in, the bile flows out. There's a lot of people who have been completely alienated by the last 20 years of PC'ness and they are thrilled that someone can be on the air talking ***** like this.
Of course, that's no excuse, they're still retarded racist homophobes. But I can see where the support comes from. - Breyker4711, on 05/14/2009, -2/+4Maybe it has something to do with the majority of the ideas coming out of that group are ***** crazy.
- teebird, on 05/14/2009, -1/+3Greenwald wasn't ignoring the Democrats or so-called "liberals." The point of his commentary was the reasons why one specific group...the so-calld "Right"...has lost so much ground recently.
"Conservatism" seems to be intellectually exhausted. That's the image I get from the miserable showing the movement and their party have made in the past year. The closest any of the current leading voices in the GOP seem to come to a coherent political idea is to launch yet another anti-Democratic of anti-Obama tirade.
Michael Steele understands that the GOP cannot win by relying on the "base" it has cultivated for the last several decades because younger Americans have other concerns, but Steele seems to have no idea how to attract a younger cohort or how to build a new base. And the continual stream of public gaffes by Steele, Palin, Bachmann, and others and Boehner's stone-faced knee-jerk contrarianism aren't doing anything to help the situation.
This won't last forever, No one should doubt that there are bright and capable people among "Conservatives" who can put forward good ideas, propose sound policy and make their movement attractive to a new group of voters, but the incompetent loudmouths who are holding the spotlight need to step aside or be pushed aside to make way for people who might have something of value to offer. - anstice85, on 05/14/2009, -1/+31. 4. Read any comment that isn't terribly sarcastic. - NoLibertarians, on 05/14/2009, -2/+4The right has not collapsed. No more than the left collapsed when they lost elections. Both parties are resilient and always go into disarray after a loss. Time heals all wounds in politics.
- norman619, on 05/14/2009, -5/+7Why are they ignoring the fact that the left (Democratic party) is shriking as well? Which group is growing? The independants. I love these BS stories. They only tell half the story and ignore the other half wich illustrates the fact that the people are fed up with BOTH parties.
- anstice85, on 05/14/2009, -2/+4While I don't doubt that the number of registered independents has risen, it'd be foolish to claim that the Democratic party is shrinking when the opposite is true. Last year, an average of 36% of Americans identified themselves as Democrats and 28% as Republicans. That 8-point advantage is the largest for the Democratic Party in over two decades.
- Waiting2awake, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1You aren't making any sense... you are accusing me of something you can not prove, and have no evidense....Do you just call anyone religious? How does stating that making broad generalizations is generally wrong - make me religious?
Silly little child. - inactive, on 05/14/2009, -1/+2Actually the 'Right' hasn't collapsed. The Republican party is declining ever so slightly (nowhere near collapse) because some of the left wing and moderates of the party have become Independents.
As the numbers suggest, http://tinyurl.com/dc9wxl the defectors aren't becoming Democrats. The Democrat numbers are declining too! Though not quite as fast as the Republican numbers. However, the 'Right' wing of the Republican party is still there and still as crazy as they ever were. - DankBuddz, on 05/14/2009, -1/+2I don't know, doesn't the right say the same about Olberman, Maddow, etc?
Yeah, they do.
The difference is that pundits on the left aren't hateful bigots. - roodammy44, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1@140Suffolk
I would argue liberals do that more often than republicans.
For example, when Obama extends censorship bills, we're right along with the right wing in condemning them. Not just following what certain people tell us to think. - otterp, on 05/14/2009, -2/+3"[hate-mongering is] what [right-wing radio has] been doing for several decades now." Yes, but they don't represent the average right-leaning person, as 10% of the media is trying to counter the 90% that leans slightly left. Luckily, everyone with a brain has finally become an independent.
- anstice85, on 05/14/2009, -1/+2The problem is that they rarely bring valid criticism. They have no problem downright lying to their listeners - that or making a big deal out of nothing like the kind of mustard that Obama uses.
I don't think any of them should be ignored. Rather, I'd recommend everyone listen to them occasionally, if not for entertainment value. - pcx99, on 05/14/2009, -5/+6For the same reason the left collapsed a decade or two ago. They got too busy serving the corporate interests instead of the people who put them into office. Don't worry, the democrats have already set the stage for a republican comeback (see throwing trillions at the big banking interests, failure to cap interest rates, business as usual in spying on everything you do on the net)... Hopefully the new repubs will be of the Rob Paul variety.
- rossnyc, on 05/14/2009, -2/+3Bushy didn't help them much either.
- firesphotons, on 05/14/2009, -1/+2you mean like the kind organized religion makes? Like saying all Muslims are bad or that god is glad we are in Iraq like Palin? please stfu
- anstice85, on 05/14/2009, -2/+3I disagree. I know a few older people who are a fan of that stuff because it's the only media that they've ever had access to. One didn't have a TV so the only entertainment he had was a radio, which he listened to all day while he worked. Since conservative radio is years more popular than liberal radio could ever hope to be, it's all he listened to and considered it legitimate, unbiased news (a lot of people do). They mean well but have been fed the same lines for so long that they can't tell fact from opinion.
- rpgmakr, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1"I don't get why the man has the little bit of fame he has."
He has a celebrity blog that is wildly popular. - buckrogers1965, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1Then where are the Republican leaders denouncing this kind of hate talk? If they are letting their supporters talk this way, then it is because they want this kind of talk.
You know, if they are leaders, then they should, oh, I don't know, LEAD maybe? - aduzik, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1There's also the neocon idea that sheer force of will is enough to overcome reality. See, for example, the Iraq War. Reality, which has a well-known liberal bias, always wins.
- Acewrap, on 05/14/2009, -1/+2Go Galt. Please.
- Recoil, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1You forgot the step between 2 and 3, which is "???"
- inactive, on 05/14/2009, -1/+2So the millions of fans of Rush, Sean, and others are all bad-hearted people?
- roodammy44, on 05/14/2009, -2/+3Does extreme ignorance make you a bad person?
Actually, there are probably some arguments in support of that.
These people are living proof that you need to get out of your bubble and challenge all conventional beliefs. -
