- NelsonAlgren, on 04/21/2009, -1/+14Will Holder decide we are a nation of men or laws?
- freedomjoe, on 04/22/2009, -0/+7No, it is out of his hands and it SHOULD be. anyone who says otherwise has been conditioned by the Bush DoJ. In this case, we might like it if he could sway Holder, but the AG needs to act according to the law and make decisions based on the evidence -- not on any political sway from any party or the POTUS. I don't want Obama being like Bush and directing the DoJ to do his bidding or urging them to do one thing over another! That's exactly what we need to get away from. Holder is an excellent lawyer whose dedication to the constitution and the rule of law is not questioned by anyone. That is why he was appointed and that is what he brings to our politicized and corrupted DoJ.
Let's get back to how things should be. Not imperial dictatorship as Bush had in place. Holder will do the right thing and Conyers is working on it from his side.
Sorry, but the way Bush infiltrated the DoJ and used it for his own purposes -- that's how we GOT here, with torture memos designed and tailored to Bush's desires. One of the reasons I supported Obama is because of his constitutional law background. I expect him to do things as they were designed-- THREE arms of government. If he does, we may be able to save the DoJ, but even then, it's iffy. that place is stocked up with fundys and far right extremists who were vetted based on their religion and conservative ideology -- illegally, I might add. No more of that crap.
I'd be willing to sacrifice it all in order to get our 3 arms of government working properly again. That's what this is all about and I simply don't believe we can achieve that by cutting corners and playing Bush with the law. - AdeleMor, on 04/21/2009, -1/+8slick, but the idea that it's out of obama's hands is unfortunately a bit far fetched, even if legalistically it might be the case
- Insightful, on 04/22/2009, -0/+3I agreed with Greenwald on this one.
Contrast Saturday Night Massacre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday_Night_Massac ... where Attorney General Richardson and Assistant Attorney General Ruckelshaus both resigned rather than follow Nixon's order to fire special prosecutor Cox vs Alberto Gonzalez who politicized the Justice Department and made it an extension of the White House.
The Justice Department must remain independent no matter what the political cause it may be.
