- RiMac, on 02/18/2009, -80/+334This is ridiculous. Where is the Obama reference? They're suggesting that the stimulus was written by chimps, a suggestion that has been made about tons and tons of things, notably The Simpsons. OBAMA DIDN'T WRITE THE STIMULUS BILL, HE JUST SIGNED IT. STOP LOOKING FOR THINGS TO BE OUTRAGED ABOUT, YOU HUFFPO ZOMBIES.
- latexsolarbeef, on 02/18/2009, -75/+297What the ***** is wrong with you people???? David Obey, a white guy from Wisconsin, introduced the significant amount of the bill that was made law. Obama signed it into law. In the cartoon, the officer's comment is "...to WRITE the next stimulus bill." Not "to SIGN the next stimulus bill." The only racist thing about this cartoon are the people's insertion of their own ***** up stereotypes...which says more about their own racist thoughts than this rather silly cartoon. If anything, the cartoon implies that the cops shot a white guy; the major contributing author of the ARRA, NOT THE GUY WHO SIGNED IT!!!
Sure, the cartoon ain't exactly brilliant, sure, it ain't exactly funny, but it's _definitely_ not racist, no matter how the morons that read the NYP would take it. - colonelbuckshot, on 02/18/2009, -61/+272What makes Sam Stein think that the author had Obama in mind when he drew the Connecticut chimpanzee? The interpretation is more racist than the cartoon.
- sniperhare, on 02/18/2009, -51/+202What a double standard, I remeber seeing cartoons depicting Bush as a chimp in many publications. It's just a cartoon get over it.
- kaelyiesta, on 02/18/2009, -36/+158This is exactly the kind of crap Carlin warned against. Context matters. Does the fact that there was a recent incident with an escaped ape being shot and the fact that Pelosi was the one who 'wrote' that nonsensical bill mean nothing?
The hypocrisy is stunning too. The obvious caricatures of bush as a monkey are completely acceptable to HuffingtonPost while the misconstrued comparison of Obama to an ape isn't?
Liberals are supposed to be the ones against mindless censorship. Civil liberties was your bag. Please don't lose that. - PissedGodzilla, on 02/18/2009, -129/+239What were they thinking when they allowed this to be in their paper. Regardless of what is meant they should have known how this would be taken by the majority of people.
- NateB2, on 02/18/2009, -9/+105It was my impression that the cartoon was essentially saying that the authors of the stimulus package essentially had the intelligence of a chimpanzee - not equating Obama to the chimpanzee - but mocking the general intelligence level of the politicians in Washington DC.
- ohthedaysofyore, on 02/18/2009, -42/+114I'm an Obama supporter and all but... you guys are just being zealous.
"A cartoon likening the author of the stimulus bill, perhaps President Barack Obama, with a rabid chimpanzee graced the pages of the New York Post on Wednesday."
It's same thing as people making a big-deal out of the "lipstick on a pig comment".
Come on. Buried. - skipdog172, on 02/18/2009, -30/+91You people are ***** ridiculous. Did you read the article? See the cartoon? Understand the cartoon? No, you read the headline, maybe glanced at the picture, and assumed it was horribly racist.
There is nothing suggesting race here. If you think there is, you are making something out of nothing.... and you are an unintelligent sheep.
I'll agree with the NY Posts's response: "The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist." - GoKings, on 02/18/2009, -27/+85Obama didn't even write the stimulus bill... People drew Bush like a chimp all the time, but it doesn't matter. Nothing here indicates that the author was implying it was Obama in mind. If you are opposed to the stimulus bill (as I am) it wouldn't be hard to get the link that the bill seems like it was written by a monkey. I hate Bush, and I voted for Obama, but on Digg people always jump on people using the race card... Unless it involves Obama. There's nothing to see here folks. Move along...
- BorsKaegel, on 02/18/2009, -12/+68Porch monkey 4 life.
(Oh, no no, it's cool, I'm taking it back.) - inactive, on 02/18/2009, -57/+112Double Standard.
There was a left-wing website called BushOrChimp.com for 8 years and nobody cared. Obama should be subjected to the same amount of ridicule and not one ounce less.
If he can't take it, or his skin is too thin, tough cookies.
There was a guy who did a test on fairness and submitted the same tee shirt designs to different companies and none of them would run the Obama one. The identical design with Bush's picture was accepted by all of them.
Double standard.
Typical libs. - Konrad9, on 02/18/2009, -22/+74I got the impression they just meant it was a monkey or a chimp that wrote it, not that black people are less evolved.
- jpa82, on 02/18/2009, -31/+76Funny, we had no problem calling the last guy a monkey all the time. Now all of a sudden it's racist because he's black. No one was shooting a crow or a raccoon to death. A monkey is a pretty general symbol of incompetence, I don't see the connection regardless of the paper's implied bias. I agree with their response to Mr. Sharpton. He's exactly the kind of person to chase this ambulance up and down the street.
- lornefs, on 02/18/2009, -12/+56The Huffington Post is only reporting on what the New York Post published.
Snap is right, try to understand what you are reading. - JAVandiver, on 02/18/2009, -9/+52Seriously! Why is HuffPo ever allowed to hit the front page? It is pretty much the definition of yellow journalism. Everyone complains about Fox News but the Huffington Post is considered a valid news source?! Please. I really wish that the ultra-liberal spammers of Digg would do the world a favor and self terminate.
- haydukeqc, on 02/18/2009, -14/+56I didn't think Obama wrote the stimulus bill.
- fribhey, on 02/18/2009, -7/+46i think we are the only ones who actually read the cartoon and understood it's point. the chimp is NOT supposed to be obama, the cartoonist is saying that the people who wrote it are idiots NOT the guy who signed it.
- dynamojoe, on 02/18/2009, -11/+48The Post is full of unfunny nitwits and Sharpton is still a drama whore.
What's new? - inactive, on 02/18/2009, -12/+48Isnt it related to that TV chimp who went crazy and had to be stabbed and shot?
- Number23, on 02/18/2009, -55/+88Comparing Bush to a chimp = Funny, thoughtful comentary
Comparing Obama to a chimp=RACIST!!!!!!
Hot damn, are you libtards thin skinned. - bentman78, on 02/18/2009, -24/+56Bush was commonly portrayed as a monkey.

I'm assuming you have the same level of outrage towards the disrespect of Bush? - jjc5004, on 02/18/2009, -23/+53I think you have to try to see this as racist. The artist is pretty obviously making fun of the bill, not the president. Sorry all I see here is overreaction.
- jp2535, on 02/18/2009, -13/+43It is a double standard. People need to grow some balls and quit crying every time thier feeligns are hurt.
- Eldorian, on 02/18/2009, -19/+44Good to see cartoonists have continued the tradition from the last 8 years as showing the President as resembling a monkey.
- HillerMylife, on 02/18/2009, -11/+35Perhaps the people who see it as a racist statement are the ones who are racists themselves.
- 2012, on 02/18/2009, -3/+27Yes. Your impression is correct. What an insult to all the chimpanzees of the world.
- Crazyredivan, on 02/18/2009, -2/+23@Javandiver: they weren't arguing the meaning of the cartoon, Lornefs was stating that the cartoon was not from the Huffington Post, therefore their editorial standards are not in question.
...snap? - deadmoo, on 02/18/2009, -21/+41This just shows how stupid a majority of people are, if they take it that way.
- enotswhat, on 02/18/2009, -6/+26wait, Obama wrote the bill? I thought he just signed it. It is a stimulus bill not book report
- neonoodle, on 02/18/2009, -9/+27this PC ***** is getting out of hand. It's obvious that the intention of the cartoon was that the stimulus bill is so dumb a monkey could have written it. This is why Bush was compared to chimps in hundreds of comments and pictures and articles and not because Bush is African American. Is this what the next 4-8 years is going to be? Outrage over cartoons? What happened when there was an outrage over the Muhammed cartoons a few years back? The response was "Chill out, it's only a cartoon!" Same goes for this instance. No, the cartoon isn't funny or meaningful. The whole thing is even cliche. To consider it racist, though, is taking it too far.
- PopcornDave, on 02/18/2009, -8/+26It's people looking for something to get upset and protest over. Next they'll be bitching because cartoonists portray Obama with big ears.
Must be a slow day over at Huffington... - nomadxx7, on 02/18/2009, -4/+22We need to be tolerant of ***** regardless if it's offensive or not. Talk about banning or deleting the cartoon honestly is the same as when the Muslims were up in arms over the Dutch newspaper running a cartoon about Muhammad as a terrorist. When that picture came out did you 1) chuckle 2) cringe 3) do nothing?
It seems to me that everyone is tolerant as long as the views being stated are similar to your own. I mean if you thought that freedom of speech and freedom of the press should be allowed in the Muhammad case please don't be a hypocrite about this cartoon. Sure it could be convened as racist but honestly I don't see that as the fact. The point of the thing was that the stimulus bill was written by a crazy monkey and that monkey is Pelosi. I guess the NYT could have made the monkey's face look a little more like Pelosi there wouldn't be these agendas about this being a racist piece. However, freedom of speech and press allows the KKK to be in existence. To state that it should be banned or deleted is censorship. And I have a feeling people here don't like Papa Government censoring things. Hell if they can mock Christianity by having a picture of the Virgin Mary covered in elephant *****, they can mock Islam with pictures of Muhammad, then I think it's safe to state that nothing is sacred. I find more wrong that people are up in arms about this being a racist cartoon (especially the Huffpost) and yet either didn't know about the Stamford incident or are actually closet bigots.
Plus on a way side note I understand history, slavery, white man against the black but I still am confused about things that are not tolerated. By this I mean why can a black man use ***** yet a white man can't use n*****? It's the same word. Don't give me that it's to empower a negative word.... no it makes you look like a hypocrite. Tolerance is not having any word that is positive and negative for different groups of people. Plus to combat the n word blacks can call whites honkeys, crackers, whitey, etc. This is ok because of what reason? Why do I have to tolerate being called the above words yet there is no tolerance if I use the n word? It's not equality IMHO. And for those saying that the white man wasn't oppressed you are right. However, no black person today (young adult age) was oppressed by the white man. I don't believe that someone who lived through slavery is still around today. Maybe people alive during the Civil Rights movement yes but unless I (and I mean me) oppressed you then you have only history to go on. It's time we made progress forward versus blaming things on the past. Yes it was a horrible time in American history just like the Holocaust was a black spot for Germany. It was ugly, horrible and wrong but lets put the past behind us and work towards all being called human beings. - fribhey, on 02/18/2009, -8/+26you need to read the cartoon again because it's not using the chimp to represent obama. they are using the chimp to represent all the people who put together the stimulus bill. they are saying the stimulus bill was written by idiots and now obama will have to find someone else to write it.
- JDoorjam, on 02/18/2009, -6/+23It's not "typical libs." It's typical reactionism by people who like making noise and generating scandal. Such people come in all political flavors. I'm a "typical lib" and I find this entire "controversy" to be completely stupid.
- jp2535, on 02/18/2009, -19/+36Rember lipstick on a pig? Quit crying over stupid *****
- lsdarling, on 02/18/2009, -3/+20But they aren't calling Obama a chimp. That has been pointed out.
- nixfu, on 02/18/2009, -25/+42
I guess the phrase CHIMP-ZILLA does not seem so funny to the left wing now after they used it for 8 years against Bush. - WileEPeyote, on 02/18/2009, -3/+18"Yes, but I doubt Bush's ancestors were ever sold, traded and treated like animals."
I'd take that bet. This isn't to dicredit the recent black experience with slavery (which was a very brutal version), but if you go back far enough most of us have ancestors who were sold, traded and treated like animals in one way or another. - GoKings, on 02/18/2009, -2/+17He didn't...
- Kosh, on 02/18/2009, -11/+26You are offended absurdly easily...
- bentman78, on 02/18/2009, -24/+38I saw this posted in a thread on some forum on BBR. Since the forums there aren't inundated with screaming Obamabots the consensus by the majority of the people who posted was BFD. It was in reference to the Chimp attack in Conn. You people need to get over yourselves.
That's what I thought when I first saw it. Can't say I saw any racial issues until someone else brought it up. But then again I'm not always looking for something to complain about. I think you people who see it as a racial cartoon need to either grow up or get your head examined. - dusanmal, on 02/18/2009, -10/+24In other words, it is OK to ridicule the President who is not black but dare not ridicule black President or you are a racist... Typical rabid left PC. Every way Bush was ridiculed can be (and in this instance should be) used to ridicule Obama when he makes stupid and far reaching mistakes.
- Dipsomaniac, on 02/18/2009, -18/+32Remember how you said context matters? The context is that black people have had racism directed at them for centuries and part of that has been comparing them to monkeys and apes.
That's not so for white people. That's what 'context' means. - acehorne, on 02/18/2009, -2/+16The only thing having to do with race here is on the part of the writer who used his racist stereotype of comparing monkeys to african americans (along with his tremendous inability to understand satire). I'm a hippy liberal and even I can clearly see that the article itself is inherently racist, not the intent of the cartoon.
Buried... - pathouston22, on 02/18/2009, -11/+25Its only racist when something involves a black man. And Al Sharpton.
- calypsoschnitzl, on 02/18/2009, -2/+16It's just a terrible cartoon all around. It's not even funny.
- dk911, on 02/18/2009, -8/+22There have been cartoons of politicians dressed up as KKK members out on a lynch mob, and Bush as a stupid hick cowboy. Aren't those a bit racist too? Or is it only possible to be racist towards backs? In which case the definition in the dictionary needs to be changed.
blackism: (blak-ism) Discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of the African American race - nkassi, on 02/18/2009, -2/+15probably true actually. It probably makes you a lot more sensitive to this kind of crap. But who the hell approved such a boring cartoon. That thing isn't even funny. It's a waste of ink. "Monkeys wrote the Stimulus" Old and lame joke
- skipdog172, on 02/18/2009, -7/+20rofl you really think obama wrote this 1000 page bill that nobody read by himself, huh?
you guys are a joke lol -
