- oboy, on 02/15/2009, -3/+37That's why I like to think of them as Homeland Insecurity.
- pingpants, on 02/15/2009, -2/+22Hmmm. And which lucky contractor scored the account to manufacture the detectors?
- Rustymetal, on 02/16/2009, -1/+15homeland security is a joke, i want a refund
- kaelyiesta, on 02/15/2009, -2/+15Who the hell are they giving 500 million dollars to to come up with this crap? If the government has to give out contracts for this stuff, they could at least not give it out to friends and the like that have no business getting all our money.
- Y0tsuya, on 02/16/2009, -0/+12My wife's radioiodine treatment for her hyperthyroid condition tripped some airport alarm, 1 month after the treatment. They had to shunt the whole planeload of passengers to customs/agricultural inspection until they localized the radiation source to my wife. Then some guy had to lug another device out to ascertain the particular isotope. And the device wasn't all that accurate so it took a few tries. Then the poor schmuck had to spend 20 more minutes to download and fillout some paperwork. He said this happens pretty often, all over a routine medical treatment.
- asskey, on 02/16/2009, -1/+12If there's one thing I know it's that if you are at the top, no matter how nice you are someone somewhere will hate you. You never know when that person will turn up with a nuclear bomb. And apparently we won't either.
- billricardi, on 02/15/2009, -2/+13Frightening stuff. David is more than just a pretty face, he has some real journalistic chops. He was on 2 of the Pulitzer Prize winning teams at the New York Times, and he isn't afraid to get his hands dirty and say something unpopular, as long as its true.
- PhantomPhoenix, on 02/16/2009, -0/+10It's all just 'security theatre'.
- Kivenkantaja, on 02/16/2009, -2/+10Tax dollars hard at work.
- directedition, on 02/16/2009, -0/+8Yeah, Poland was really just asking to be invaded.
- mst3kcrow, on 02/16/2009, -0/+7Homeland Security for the past 8 years has been a joke....a very very scary joke. As in "our methods don't work but it sure is fun to humiliate you and ***** with you for the smallest reason". FFS, the pen tests on airport security have shown their methods to consistently fail; it's all a big show.
- belfastbiker, on 02/15/2009, -4/+11Scary Monkeys.
- Lavarock, on 02/16/2009, -0/+7I think they had ***** radioactive material in it retard.
- gadgetlust, on 02/16/2009, -1/+7Homer: Not a bear in sight. The Bear Patrol must be working like a
charm.
Lisa: That's specious reasoning, Dad.
Homer: Thank you, dear.
Lisa: By your logic I could claim that this rock keeps tigers away.
Homer: Oh, how does it work?
Lisa: It doesn't work.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: It's just a stupid rock.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: But I don't see any tigers around, do you?
Homer: ... Lisa, I want to buy your rock. - ebcreasoner, on 02/16/2009, -0/+5Gaius Baltar
- openingsound, on 02/16/2009, -1/+4that's *****
- Y0tsuya, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3Aside from the delay it wasn't that big of a deal, but I'm sure the other folks from the same plane weren't very pleased to get strip-searched. The inspector guy was quite courteous and apologized repeatedly to us. I'd hate to do his job seeing as he wastes so much time handling false alarms due to crappy equipment. Ironically, they didn't search our luggage.
- Kalais, on 02/16/2009, -9/+11Prevention is the cure - don't make enemies, and you don't need to defend anything...
- inactive, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2I hate to say it, but really, what alternatives do we have? If someone wishes to do harm to us, they will. There's no way around that.
- mst3kcrow, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2Earmarks.
- Foofoofoofoobar, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2@macweirdo42: Doesn't mean we roll over and take it, we try to do as much as is worth it to stop it before it happens. And when it comes to nuclear material, I'm willing to spend a ton of money for that.
- memper, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2I wish your wife well and that her travels go smoother in the future.
- inactive, on 02/16/2009, -3/+5Please, the attacks against us were a direct result of our policies in the mideast, not because "we were on top".
- mikelieman, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2My review of this 'Security Theatre' is: "Don't bother going"
- kd1s, on 02/17/2009, -0/+2Yes I wonder who has the contract for this one. Obviously someone who doesn't know jack ***** about radiation detection.
Your dirty nukes are going to be gamma emitters. The crap they're detecting is mostly alpha and beta emissions. - Thuktun, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1The Homeland Security Theatre Troupe.
- BCPneumatics, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1Y0tsuya, Any good TSA knows miniature nukes only come in shoes and body cavities, not carry-on luggage.
- asskey, on 02/18/2009, -0/+1See, it only took a day for Kalais to prove my point!
- slugpellet63, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1I take your point, but 400 - 600 false positives per day. Even if you take the lower amount that means 1 false positive every 3 mins 36 secs. Is it possible to properly investigate each fail to ensure it is a false positive? Will you get operator fatigue and incorrectly performed tests? Will the baddies try to sneak something through in a cargo where a lot of false positives are expected?
Not good. - DJJensaarai, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1The Inheritance is a great book...I'm getting into the China part now...it's mind-blowing. Truly amazing, and scary, *****.
- BCPneumatics, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1@BotchedMyCola: The profiles they use for profiling? Yeah, that's how you stop terrorism. Luckily there are no flight schools out of country, and no non-middle-eastern-looking terrorists.
@gadgetlust: Well done, chap. - dsgncr8or, on 02/20/2009, -0/+1Ok… this is extremely scary.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 02/16/2009, -2/+2No, don't worry about welfare -- Republicans spend like crazy on this stuff so there won't be money left for those at the bottom.
- BotchaMcCoola, on 02/16/2009, -1/+1I already said we do not know if anyone tried. The 9/11 crimes were ingenious and hopefully nothing similar can be done again in any case. We certainly do not train suspicious Saudis how to fly 767s now, do we? I had a brush with the FBI over a former Saudi student that fit some of their profiles. They are doing a great job. It was eight years from the first bomb at the WTC until the 9/11 crimes. So let’s keep them working.
- Blitzenn, on 02/16/2009, -1/+1I am so sick of the idiots who stupidly want to believe the lies republicans are throwing out there. The liers and the lier believers should all be thrown out of the country. Permanently.
THERE IS NO MOUSE FUNDING IN THE STIMULIS BILL. Nor is there any earmark for Welfare. There are NO earmarks at all in the thing. If you want to call that bad, I will leave you alone, as that is true. - jodutton, on 07/01/2009, -0/+0Could also add bananas to the list of items that trigger false alarms from radiation detection equipment. In addition, the nature of this passive system detects radiation emitted from the cargo - so a simple lead box effectively counters every radiation detection system deployed in the United States because little to no radiation escapes to be detected. The next version of this tech (the ASP system) won't solve that problem either.
www.veritasadvocacy.com - Kalais, on 02/18/2009, -1/+1Dugg for accuracy.
- Kalais, on 02/18/2009, -1/+1Oh my god - you ***** are brainwashed... Your 'at the top' of what? Your own ***** ego!!! There are more successful countries in the world than the U.S. ... and they don't get attacked! (the U.S. is just the largest ECONOMY, so the rich are richer and the poor are poorer). The trick to successful democracy when you are doing well is to not boast about your success...
Americas biggest ***** up was the 80's - Lambourghini's, Cocaine, and audacious Hollywood movies showing the whole world how courageous Americans are - the first track I ever heard on CD - Bruce Springtein 'Born in the USA'...
However, America can't be blamed for what has gone in the past though - what needs to be the focus is the future - and WAR is no future for anyone.... Americans needs to stop their propaganda puppet government from occupying the world like its a war-zone; and maybe then it might just make some friends again... - inactive, on 02/16/2009, -3/+2People are bitching about the Bailout, retarded though it may be, when we've spent billions on random ***** on this ***** without anyone whining.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 02/16/2009, -2/+1that was BushCo.
- BotchaMcCoola, on 02/16/2009, -8/+1We can't afford perfection on these things and false positives are better than no clicks at all. But you cannot dispute that HL Security, FBI, CIA and intl counterparts have stopped cold any 9/11 crimes if any were in fact tried since 9/11. In fairness, no one knows if such a diabolical crime could ever be dreamed up and carried off again.
- yaosio, on 02/16/2009, -9/+1A mock up of a nuke with no nuclear material does not set off the radiation scanner, I wonder why.
- AWBoy666, on 02/16/2009, -11/+1So in other words, we should invest government money to create a more efficient and effective security system for nuclear devices.
Oh wait, all that money is going to welfare and a mouse in San Francisco. Oh well.
