- Sunwalker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+65Jesus would cast Jerry Falwell out of the temple. Who really cares what these hypocritical, greedy, phonies say. They prey on old ladies while they line their pockets with gold. In the old days Falwell, Dobson and Robertson would have been snake oil salesmen. Christians need to stand up for Jesus and tell these actors to sit down and shut up.
- flernk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+47It's amazing to me that the Falwell type Christians actually believe what they say. When I open the scriptures, I see nothing even resembling their brand of religion. Comparing Clinton to Lucifer? Where does that fall? Murmuring? Backbiting? Bearing false witness? Anger? Hate? Deception?
Whatever it is, it is NOT Christ-like love. It's time for these guys to render unto God the things which are God's and stop toying with Caeser. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Barry Goldwater, often called the 'father of Conservatism,' was known to DETEST Jerry Falwell.
That said, I honestly don't care what Falwell said or if he apologizes for it. He is a clown, and one only listens to a clown if they want to be entertained. He has no legitimate opinions on anything as far as I am concerned. - NinjAlt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27@sunwalker
I'm agnostic but if more Christians were like you I would have a little more faith. - halleyscomet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24The irony of course, is that Falwell's heart is too full of hatred and anger to leave room for the love, grace and forgiveness of Christ. In doing this, he has become a living, breathing victory for the very Lucifer he claims to detest.
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24'The first problem is that Lucifer is a Latin name. So how did it find its way into a Hebrew manuscript, written before there was a Roman language? To find the answer, I consulted a scholar at the library of the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. What Hebrew name, I asked, was Satan given in this chapter of Isaiah, which describes the angel who fell to become the ruler of hell?
The answer was a surprise. In the original Hebrew text, the fourteenth chapter of Isaiah is not about a fallen angel, but about a fallen Babylonian king, who during his lifetime had persecuted the children of Israel. It contains no mention of Satan, either by name or reference. The Hebrew scholar could only speculate that some early Christian scribes, writing in the Latin tongue used by the Church, had decided for themselves that they wanted the story to be about a fallen angel, a creature not even mentioned in the original Hebrew text, and to whom they gave the name "Lucifer."' - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17when i was a kid i remember my family got a letter from the jerry falwell foundation. it was your typical boilerplate language but the point of the letter was that falwell was going after larry flynt of hustler magazine.
jerry was pissed because in an issue of hustler, flynt had ran a "parody letter" from "jerry falwell" talking about, among other things, his "first time" etc.
here's the rub, falwall included a copy of the parody article in the his letter. so in other words, an article that would have otherwise never have made it into our home came care of jerry falwell.
i don't remember a whole lot about the letter other than, my brother and i were laughed our asses off reading it. of course, i was only 9 or so then, not the sophisticate that i am now. - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16holycrap, good ole wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Falwellhustler.jpg - honeybear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Seriously, folks, Jerry Falwell is in league with those who would have Bush be Supreme Leader of this country. Bill Kristol, one of the signers of the organization that proposes American takeover of the Middle East and the world (see http://www.newamericancentury.org/) said he thought Bush being Supreme Leader was a great idea (see http://thinkprogress.org/2006/06/04/kristol-invade-iran/). Here's another really interesting read on Iran, Bush and the Second Coming: (http://www.perrspectives.com/blog/archives/000376.htm). I know someone who has studied Revelation for 40 years who says Bush won't go out of office -- that they will find a way to keep him in. Charles Crispin Miller, author of A Patriot Act, also said it. Check it out -- it'll make you think.
- erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14It saddens me that I used to agree with some of this garbage. I used to be a bigoted, ignorant, neo-con. Now I'm quite liberal, the opposite of what I was. Having seen both sides, I can honestly say that not all Christians are bad, and that Falwell, Coulter, and co. while claiming to be Christian, are doing nothing more than manipulating Christians. They are scum. They are hateful, and they bring nothing but harm to this world. In short, they are absolute dirtbags, and I really wish Christians and other conservatives would wake up and realize this. There is nothing wrong with being "conservative." Neoconservatism is a different animal. It is loud, hateful, bigoted, and lie-spouting. It seeks to spread like a cancer at whatever cost- the murder of thousands of men, women, and children in Iraq, the harm of global warming to the environment, or hate displayed to those of alternate religions, lifestyles, cultures, etc... And it's all about power and money. The neo-cons want power, and they will do whatever they can to spread their perverted version of conservatism or Christianity, so long as they gain power from it. In short it's fascism, just like Nazism or any other fascist ideology.
- heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Since when is Jerry Falwell being a douche news? He's always a douche. That's his entire schtick.
- there, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8
There are exceptions here and there but it seems like virtually all the bigots and haters in America today are conservatives. I think their version of being moral requires you have as many enemies as possible. Usually they HATE (oft used word in conservative lexicon) several of the following.....
Liberals (basically anyone that doesn't agree with their extremist views),
Muslims (you don't really believe they're after terrorists do you?)
Atheists (unless you're Libertarian or Objectivist)
Poor people (since they are not worthy of life for not being rich)
Big corrupt government (unless of course they are the corrupt ones in charge)
Pacifists (can't have any damn pussies that respect human life)
People that aren't obsessed with money (and anyone that shares is a communist)
Gays (Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve... says so right there in the bible)
Nuclear technology (unless of course we can use it to nuke someone)
Peta (we don't give a crap for humans... much less animals)
Anything sexual (as we all know... babies come from the stork)
Drug users (much more civilized to shoot them or throw them in prison)
Hippies(can represent several of the items above)
Chinese (utterly evil... except when we buy their cheap products from Walmart)
Blacks (the conservative states all rebelled so they could keep them)
Hispanics (they're invading us... quick build a fence before I hire one)
Europeans (who do they think they are for creating western civilization?)
Africans (savages)
Asians (especiall them Japs)
The UN...heck... all foreigners (imagine them not supporting our invasion and torture policies)
No doubt I missed a few. To be honest my guess is they actually hate everyone that isn't them. I've never been clear to me why they say they believe in freedom when it's so obvious they've allowed themselves to become completely intolerant of others. - ndonohue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@flernk: double digg for that last bit.
It's the job of extremists like him to provide entertaining news, nothing more. Falwell is simply trying to get attention on himself by throwing around comparisons to the Devil. Actually, by thinking about this and passing it around Digg, you're only doing what he wants (I guess I am too). - steinbeckgirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well according to people like Falwell, morals=Republican, they have managed to paint a picture of Bush flying in on the wings of an angel, come to save us all
- kremvax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8How many millions of our tax dollars have gone to support this particular faith-based fellow and his minions under this administration?
Seriously. I'd genuinely like to know. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6nazuraki -
Goldwater was a Libertarian by today's definitions. - there, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"What is your definition of "Conservative"?"
That's actually a fair question.
Human beings are very complex creatures and our views don't necessarily conform perfectly to some arbitrary political platform dujour (I know my views don't). So personally I don't define people as "conservative" or "liberal" unless they themselves choose to identify themselves in that way. So if someone believes in say less government in some respect... but doesn't say they are conservative... well they aren't necessarily conservative. However if one is an intolerant prick (Fallwell, Murdock, Limbaugh, Beck) and identify themselves as conservatives...they are conservatives.
Ironically... I find this was what the communists and Nazis were about. They became so obsessed and collectivized with their own elitist views, they ended up drowning out everyone else's voice. Humans aren't perfect emotionless machines and it seems those of the right have forgotten this.
There are decent well meaning conservatives out there but to be honest they seem far and few in between these days. Conservatives today are mostly about violence, greed, paranoia, self-righteousness and xenophobia. They constantly talk about freedom in very abstract philosophical terms but it practice (where it counts) they seem to undermine it at every turn. (big government, bigotry, undermining the constitution and they advocate the use of force.... everywhere).
Here at Digg when a conservative opens his mouth to speak... almost guaranteed they will say something that insults tens of millions of people and acts to reinforce some negative stereotype. I know by me saying "conservatives" are hateful... I'm also perpetuating a stereotype too but christ... I don't loath everything under the sun the way so many of self-admitted conservatives seem to. Furthermore... I don't really hate conservatives... I hate haters. (no matter what political flag they fly)
You may personally be a great guy (hey...you resisted the urge to flame me so that counts for something in my book) but in general the rightwing today has really become intolerant of everything. Left and right politcs should be about experimenting with new ideas to try and build a better world.... not behaving like closeminded tyrants. - geekee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9He's as nutty as Hugo Chavez.
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5“Beware of false prophets which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so, every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
~ Jesus Of Nazereth - ArcticCelt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Ah! the ironie. Seams that since he learned that "First amendment/Freedom to speak" thingy from Larry Flint he realized that he can use it is way and tell all the blatant lies and insults that he wants without being sued. Good days.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@robber
Exactly. What we know as 'conservatism' doesn't represent true conservative values.
It represents a diseased, bigoted, fearful, dogmatic strain of zealotry completely absent of logic and common human decency. - there, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Unfortunately this is not true (although I really wish it were).
If you are not a conservative these days.....you are the enemy (at least according to many conservatives). There is no middle ground. No compromise. No individuality.
You either must be an ideological soldier for them or be prepared to be violently crushed as a commie jihadist sympathizer. - Maccc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You know, Jesus loved everybody, but I don't think he'd like Jerry Falwell very much.
- steinbeckgirl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6What would Jesus Do? Strike Jerry with lightening. For awhile I began to think Falwell, as well as people like Ann Coulter were mentally unstable. Now I know he's just a hypocrite, and she's just a crazy bitch. Anybody who is a real christian would never believe and subscribe to such hate spewing.
- C00001, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Only, unfortunately, Falwell's never done anything good for his country...
- JavaBean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I ask this a lot and never get an answer, but here goes: What is your definition of "Conservative"? I consider myself one, but there are almost no conservatives in politics today -- definitely not our president nor any of the religious idiots that have stolen the word and bastardized it...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Falwell is a wolf in sheeps clothing.
- steinbeckgirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Remember...regular political debate doesn't work for a lot of Republicans, Bush included. They always stoop to the religious right, guns, or fear right before election. Hard to believe that there are so many people out there who vote based on those issues alone.
- growler1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The sad/scary thing is, Falwell and people like Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention have insinuated themselves so well into the GOP that it would take an act of Congress (literally; more campaign finance reform) to get them out of where they shouldn't be. Land is one of Bush's main advisors, and if you go to his home web page he has a whole page devoted to articles that he proclaims are signs of the "death of liberalism" --which he gleefully celebrates, apparently. Every time I see that, and then think about him whispering into Bush's ear, I shudder with disgust.
Brings to mind that story about Jesus kicking the money-changers out of the temple...
I don't really want to usher in a second-coming, but I certainly wouldn't mind Jesus opening up a can of whoop-ass on phoney religious doppelgangers like Falwell and Land. - labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's due to the easy votes available from the religious right. When people are willing to buy the crap that Falwell spouts, they are willing to buy anything.
Faith is defined as belief without proof. This is exactly what the neo-con movement wants. - SupaFupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Do you think Pat Robertson gets jealous when Falwell gets the nutjob spotlight?
- labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@there
Your second post was very well said.
The problem with labels, as it is given today, is the limitation of language. The meaning of a word does not match another persons meaning.
Lets say that Rene had been involved in many anti-war protests, and charity projects. Rene has associated all these things with liberal functions and ideas and therefore thinks that liberals are wonderful. Rene has seen cutbacks for projects to help the needy, and therefore only views conservatives as greedy money-loving people.
Now we have Robin, who worked through college off scholarships and grants. Robin was born poor, and thinks that anyone can succeed in this country if they choose to. Robin attends church they have helped in raising Robin's children, and have been wonderful. To Robin, conservatives are good, hardworking people and liberals just want to waste money on the lazy.
Therefore when Rene and Robin log into this site and debate, they use the labels Liberal and Conservative, and they have radically different meanings to each other them. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4 Amazing how much hatred, intolerance and spite spews from that pulpit.
- devilman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Fat ass, hooker-lovin' ass wipe. Anything more to say about this waste of flesh? By the way I'm not voting for Hilary either. She's kind of like the female Joe Lieberman.
That's what he should have called her.
...Although I guess that wouldn't help him guide his mindless flocks to do his EVIL bidding. - kremvax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Which church does he represent?
- C00001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4eplawless--
That sounds like an interesting read--mind posting the source? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why do republicans hate America? Why do they support bashers of pornography, and then take contributions from Larry Flint? Why do republicans hate Jesus?
- labmouse42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That would almost be worth the second coming just to see that.
- medieval, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I can't figure out why conservatives hate Hillary Clinton so much. She's a very centrist moderate. There are many politicians that way more liberal than she is. She's roughly the same politically as Rudy G.
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Coulter would look better in "Hustler" (air brushing being what it is).
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sometimes I wish people wouldn't wait for Jesus to kick somebody's ass. We're perfectly capable ourselves.
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4http://lds-mormon.com/lucifer.shtml
- piznut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@lakawak
Nice strawman argument, *****. Name a single democratic congressman who has called Bush lucifer. - steinbeckgirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Javabean- I think you are totally speculating about "liberals" and me. I actually agreed with some of your posts, but maybe I misjudged you. I thought it was funny that Bush was called El Diablo because I think he is a wolf in sheeps clothing. Get it? If you can't see that, then you are the idiot. If you think that man understands and respects the constitution then you are just plain wrong. This isn't about Democrat or Republican, it's about common ***** sense.
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't know why she scares them so bad. She has been saying for years she doesn't want to do the female president experiment while the neocons are in power. There is too much at stake to risk it. Perhaps they are trying to bolster their flagging support by conjuring up memories of the good ol' days of Clinton hating.
- reeder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What an incredibly rational person you are.
- kuyakew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3no. when a suposed "man of god" calls a public figure lucifer, it is not the same thing. a "holy man" going on television spewing words of hate is shocking enough already.
- JavaBean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@labmouse: you nailed what I was not-so-eloquently trying to get across through a simple question. I fit into the "Robin" category, although I am not religious and did not get any scholarships and grants. I was born into a low income family and have since worked hard to get where I am now with pretty much no help from anyone aside from my wife.
I don't think all Republicans are good nor do I think all Democrats are bad. I think we as a country have lost the ability to discuss important matters with some level of civility. Conversations seem to always turn into flame wars and name calling both in public forums (like digg) and in the political arena.
I do however think it is time that our government started focusing more on what the Constitution is about and less on the various special interests that dominate our politics today (on BOTH sides of the aisle). Then maybe we'll have a system of government that doesn't make me want to puke everytime I see the news. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Funny thing is that Larry Flint is a republican. Why do republicans protect pornograophy?
- rafgar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would hope that the Bible belters you're speaking of open their eyes and see that they were decieved terribly by Bush's 'good man' image before the next election. I pray they do anyway. We don't need another politician who's somehow convinced the populace that he's a church boy who can do no wrong.
