- superfusion, on 03/10/2009, -0/+15Former Bush speechwriter David Frum:
On the one side, the president of the United States: soft-spoken and conciliatory, never angry, always invoking the recession and its victims. This president invokes the language of "responsibility," and in his own life seems to epitomize that ideal: He is physically honed and disciplined, his worst vice an occasional cigarette. He is at the same time an apparently devoted husband and father. Unsurprisingly, women voters trust and admire him.
And for the leader of the Republicans? A man who is aggressive and bombastic, cutting and sarcastic, who dismisses the concerned citizens in network news focus groups as "losers." With his private plane and his cigars, his history of drug dependency and his personal bulk, not to mention his tangled marital history, Rush is a walking stereotype of self-indulgence

http://www.alternet.org/mediaculture/130912/why_ru ... - johnhummel, on 03/10/2009, -0/+4I haven't even seen the article yet, but I recall Tom Delay about what- a week or so ago mentioning that Mr. Limbaugh is a great voice for the morals and conservative part of the United States.
That said - I can almost understand conservative, through I think that Mr. Limbaugh's statements are outside that of true conservatives such as Ron Paul, Buckley, Hitchens, and even Buchanan - some of which were opposed to the War in Iraq because of conservative values.
But moral? Really? A man who has made clearly racist statements (then tries to make up garbage about how he wasn't being racist). He's sexist - if you disagree with him, you're a "feminazi" or worse. Anyone who disagrees with him is practically a traitor. He's been guilty of abusing drugs, been married three times (which is hardly a recommendation for immorality, but last time I checked most of the so-called "Moral Majority" of America have a big problem with divorce at all).
Of all of the people who hold up as a "moral" example for the conservative movement, there are far better men to choose from than Mr. Limbaugh. But then again, it was made by Tom Delay, who seems to share the opinion that any compromise to get stuff done is "bad" (see his exit speech from the House). So maybe from his viewpoint, as long as you are on his of the issues, you can be as big as a douchebag as you want, and you're still considered "moral." - Midtowner, on 03/10/2009, -1/+5It's odd to me to see an editorial appearing on Huffington Post criticizing someone because they lack religious principles to guide them (Chopra mentions that in the article, then moves on). I suppose that's the source of anti-morality being discussed here. I think that conservatives (note, I don't say Republicans) and liberals always think themselves moral people. They just have different ideas of what is ideal as far as morality is concerned.
Your typical conservative thinks that the American moral ideal is that we all get what we deserve. In other words, there's no such thing as down on your luck, you make your own luck. If a CEO is getting a $400-bajillion-dollar bonus, good for him, he probably worked his butt off to get there.
Your typical liberal thinks that the American ideal should be rooted in compassion -- that the best of us should be judged by the standard of how we treat the least of us. I do find it more than slightly ironic that this standard is what is taught in the Bible -- typically something cited more often by conservatives as the manual of morality than liberals.
Truth be told, I think Limbaugh is what conservatives should be. I don't really see the 'you make your own luck' sort of morality jiving too much with Christian morality unless one is willing to take on a heaping helping of hypocrisy. Limbaugh makes no apologies for his beliefs, he's fairly consistent, and he says a lot of insensitive things and sometimes, very occasionally, he actually has a decent bit of insight to offer.
Folks like Limbaugh are useful just as his counterparts on the opposite side of the aisle are useful.
All of that said, I can't figure out why, at this moment, Limbaugh is suddenly relevant to anything other than the fact that he's a guy on the radio with an opinion. He doesn't have an impressive educational background, aside from radio, he never accomplished anything of note. He has no political experience. Care about what he has to say at your own risk, and if he offends you, take what he says in context with the fact that he's barely qualified to have an opinion at all. He's an entertainer, and a decent one at that. He makes lots of money from his sponsors who in turn make money off of the products he promotes for him. Beyond that? Ask yourself why you should care about anything he has to say. - KaiserArny, on 03/10/2009, -0/+3Aiming for Me092?

- superfusion, on 03/10/2009, -1/+4Yes, on Iraq issues, but if Rush agreed with Frum in 2003, Frum can speak against Rush in 2009.
- aduzik, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2I can't believe I'm digging something written by the usually wide-eyed and credulous Deepak Chopra, but what he says about Limbaugh's assault on morality, and his opinion of himself as the only true arbiter of morality is absolutely true.

That's an incredibly nice way of saying it.

Allergies are caused by indigestion. You can cure cataracts by spitting in a cup and washing your eyes with it. "Quantum healing" can prevent aging. That's just the start. Is your BS meter pegged yet?
> no one can deny the connection between mind and body, or the usefulness of mental healing and spirituality in conjunction with traditional medical techniques!
Show me the data. - CL38, on 03/10/2009, -1/+2Deepak Chopra, unlike Rush Limbaugh and some of the Republicans commenting here, is respected world-wide and contributes great value to the world.
Rush Limbaugh will self-impode. We need to stay focused on ensuring that our voices are heard and that Democrats adhere to the policies -- and pass the legislation -- we voted for last November. - awggie, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1elaborate or STFU.
- hogie616, on 03/10/2009, -2/+3Everyone who hates Limbaugh needs to stop giving him so much damn attention. He lives for this stuff, and it certainly does nothing but embolden him and fatten his pockets.
Didn't anyone's moms tell them to ignore people like this? - Ranzera, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1Limbaugh has been doing a good job of vilifying himself for quite some time now...

-Doctor Ilad Virjay - shercares, on 03/11/2009, -0/+0Rush needs some spirit in his life other than his own self indulged ego spirit. To all of you out there who think the Republicans were so GREAT! In the most recent past you all should see how much money they spent! $11.5 trillion dollars and that includes the two little piece meals "We the American People" rec'd for unemployment, food stamps, blah, blah, blah up to Jan. 09. I was astounded to see the Feds pay out to a Term Auction Facility(they created) $2.9 trillion in Dec. 07. This is when the cards started falling. Of this amount only $447.6 billion has been spent. So where is the difference? I have the whole list. Research and you can find it too!

- jbmcb, on 03/10/2009, -3/+3Chopra? Seriously? This guy is a certifiable, quantum-mystical quack. Next they'll have Sylvia Brown critiquing the Republican's economic strategy.

- FishHammer, on 03/10/2009, -12/+2what the hell is with the Rush bashing? He doesn't run anything, he's not in power. All he does is loudly proclaim his opinions over the radio. Why is he worth this sudden massive surge of hatred? Huffington Post is such garbage.
- 919kwjc, on 03/10/2009, -19/+5HuffPo garbage... buried.
