- Railz, on 06/28/2009, -7/+40Let it. States has always moved faster for social rights then Washington. Civil rights moved faster in the north then the south, and because Washington has to push the slowest animal across the line, the rest of the country has to socially wait for the rest of our backwards counterparts for federal laws.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFkeKKszXTw - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -8/+30I support loving families. That's what I call family values.
How can you people take themselves seriously when they call themselves the family values party when you support the breaking up of LOVING FAMILIES? - marmotjmarmot, on 06/29/2009, -2/+21Can somebody explain how keeping gay people from getting married keeps straight people from getting divorced? Is that the gist of DOMA?
- IgorUnchained, on 06/29/2009, -7/+25We arent equal until everyone is equal.
I know we/our children are going to look back at these times like our parents/we look back on the black civil rights movement. - linkesslover, on 06/29/2009, -1/+17Marriage is whatever we want it to be, retard. We get to choose.
We are not bound by tradition or religion.
And the country is joining the rest of the civilized world and making marriage between TWO LOVING PEOPLE. - goodbick, on 06/29/2009, -6/+21I'm really surprised at the intolerant idiocy that is going on in these comments. Is this digg, or the foxnews.com forums?
- BuzzFriendly, on 06/29/2009, -1/+13Folk’s equality is an illusion. Pick any group of people or country and you will find that it has always existed and most likely always will. It’s just the nature of humans. Look at any country, any religion, any type of sexuality, color etc etc etc. And you will always find a group with an opposing view. Passing laws doesn’t make it go away either. This is not to say we should not have anti-discrimination laws, I am just stating that laws may re-enforce your right to be who you are but do little to nothing to change perceptions by your fellow man. I could care less if gays marry or not, it doesn’t change my life or anyone else’s life in anyway. So if law was passed in the US today allowing gay marriages do not think for one second your feelings of second class citizenship will disappear. Just ask any black person, woman, overweight person, Muslim in a Jewish country, Jew in a Muslim country, Catholics and Christians etc etc etc. No law will ever be passed that will make you feel happy about yourself and your life. This ultimately resides within you.

"God defined marriage being between one man and one women, you cannot change that no matter what you do."
Except... if we change it. :) - tgc1, on 06/29/2009, -3/+12It's not Hetero Elitism. It's full on religious retardation. I have no patience for that *****. Their idiological views of the world are simply not in touch with reality.
- Mnementh2230, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9Your God may define things however he/she (or rather, those that claim to speak for him/her) wants. However, those that don't share the same belief in the same magical sky-daddy (ie - FAITH) don't have to follow the rules you fundies lay upon yourselves.
Oh, and the institution of marriage is WAY older than christianity. Go read up on your history. People were getting married before your faith was ever born, and guess what? It was a civil matter, and homosexuals were allowed to get married. Heck, it still happened in medieval times, too. Only recently in history has religion tried to justify its bigotry with its faith, and that still doesn't work in a nation like the USA where we have a separation of church and state!
You lose no matter how you look at it - historically, legally, or otherwise. Your generation is obsolete (and yes, I know you're only 32, LJU). My generation, and those coming after me, just don't care. You've already lost because the folks who are just now entering adulthood for the most part just don't care about your hokey superstitions and the rules they want to impose on other people.
You fail. - frankgdunn, on 06/29/2009, -5/+14I hope the President reads this.
- Elranzer, on 06/29/2009, -2/+11It's hetero elitism. The Christians conservatives know that nothing they do will make the gays go away, but they have one thing to hold over them: marriage. To them, the marriage card makes their union more valid than a gay couple's. Take away that, and they don't have fuel to be bullies anymore.
- idoj, on 06/29/2009, -2/+11Good luck with that and let us know when your horse can consent to marriage.
- BigLou, on 06/29/2009, -3/+12Well, I think the general view from the public needs to change. Just yesterday my girlfriend and I were driving through a predominantly gay neighborhood during a gay pride festival. She noticed the rainbow flags and said, "I don't know why they need to be so public about their gay pride... you don't see us having heterosexual pride days." I immediately gasped at the ignorance of that statement and proceeded to lecture her on the fact that every single day of our lives is essentially "hetero-pride day." It's beliefs like these which keep the basic gay rights away from our culture.
- BuzzFriendly, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8As are women and people of color which are natural as well. Doesn't change what I said though.
- jer2eydevil88, on 06/29/2009, -4/+12Just like with the last civil rights campaign in America this is a grassroots movement that the politicians from the last generation won't support.
- Elranzer, on 06/29/2009, -2/+10The Digg conservative jerk-fest is usually early in the morning. By afternoon, everything will be fixed (with the Rightards buried into oblivion).
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -4/+12Pfft, progress happens eventually. deal with it. :)
Just watch. as the rest of the world redefines marriage, it'll happen.
Marriage in Canada is already like that. Don't worry, your family and current marriage won't fall appart cuz of the gays. Probably because you're retarded, but nonetheless. Don't worry, your 'victory' in this is only temporary. :) - bowens44, on 06/29/2009, -5/+12have you always been a bigoted *****?
- vurdillac, on 06/29/2009, -0/+7That's right gay people - you have the right to marry people of the opposite sex so you should exercise it. You could use them as breeding stock so you can enjoy parenthood without having to get into one of those awful gay adoption scenarios. Then you can have all the gay sex you want on the side while having the straight front that will assuage the fears of all the homophobes. Be sure to always have safe sex so you don't bring some disease home to the spouse (wink wink)! Then when you amass enough power, you can dump the opposite-sex spouse and ruin his or her life. Or you can try to keep up the front until you are busted trying to blow a cop in an airport restroom so you can completely humiliate your spouse and kids.
Excellent plan, brathe. You are an inspiration to gay sociopaths everywhere! - jrm125, on 06/29/2009, -5/+12The mere fact he's even referring to someone's innate preference of the same sex vs the opposite sex as a "demon" shows he hardly gets or understands the point.
- Elranzer, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6Pointing out that you're probably a closet-case homosexual is not an insult, just an observation. Those who so loudly protest homosexuality tend to have an internal conflict with their own sexuality and their insecurities flare when the topic comes up. You feel the need to protest homosexuality to "prove" you're not a homosexual yourself. If you're truly straight, you don't need to do that.
- Elranzer, on 06/29/2009, -4/+10Gays as a group are older than Christians. Homosexuality will also outlast Christianity (since religion is unnatural, but homosexuality is natural).
- tgjerusalem, on 06/29/2009, -1/+7@indyattic Real men don't need to bitch and whine about "we don't get a straight pride day," because every goddamn day is 'straight pride day.' The whole friggin' culture is set up to celebrate the beauty and legitimacy of straight people and straight relationships. Any real man isn't going to be so insecure he's threatened by a minority group trying to gain the dignity and rights he already has.
- dshigure, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6Unsuccessful troll is unsuccessful.
- BuzzFriendly, on 06/29/2009, -2/+8Didn’t make it past 3rd grade eh? Tragic.
- Mnementh2230, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6"Actually it is beacuse I am not prepared to enter into a debate about the existance of God."
I'm not going for that. I'm talking about the separation between church and state here in the US, and the definition of marriage both as a historical institution and as a civil one.
You can define marriage within your church as between a man and a woman, but that does NOT apply to how the state defines it, and historically (i.e. before Christianity took over the institution) marriage was a civil affair, a contract between two people, mostly for monetary reasons. Go look it up, or I can provide references if you want. You're defining marriage according to your religion and then trying to FORCE that definition upon those that do not share that religion. So your "We can do whatever we please, so long as were not hurting anyone else" line is utter BS, because you're hurting those that do not share your faith by limiting their legal rights. - zip000, on 06/29/2009, -3/+8His religion OUGHT to force him to support gay rights. There are like 3 references to homosexuality in the bible; how many times does it say to be good to each other? What does your golden rule say? I think the prime directive of Christianity is to be kind, not to hate on gays.
You're using your religion as an excuse to be a bigot. - polypropglop, on 06/29/2009, -2/+7Ok. Let's see what Coretta Scott King had to say on the subject.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coretta_Scott_King#LG ... - Mnementh2230, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5Is that the best you can do?
I suppose it must be. You don't have history on your side, you don't have facts on your side, you don't have reality on your side. - ericdano, on 06/29/2009, -4/+9Gee, with people like Perez Hilton as your standard bearer.......no wonder....
- sooperdooper, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5I'll reply, even though you refuse to use standard English.
A person's time, when it comes to enjoyable things, is not as finite as you might think. The more one does things one likes (like fighting for rights and progress), the more energy one has to do more enjoyable things! Therefore, gay rights is not a "distraction" from other progressive issues. It's tied in to the struggle for a free and equal society, like workers' rights, immigrants' rights, and women's rights.
P.S.: I modded you down for thinking of people as robots. As if you're the only sentient being on the planet! - careya, on 06/29/2009, -2/+7I suspect you will find major differences based on geography. Gays in Texas probably have very different experiences than they would in San Francisco or New York.
- Elranzer, on 06/29/2009, -2/+7Marriage is already between two men or two women in some areas. There's no going back. So get used to it.
- jrm125, on 06/29/2009, -4/+9I'm betting your own demons aren't preventing you from having civil parity with the rest of the citizens in a supposedly "equal" society.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5Obvious troll is obvious.
- Elranzer, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4"It's not Hetero Elitism. It's full on religious retardation."
To be fair, I think "hetero-elitism" stems from religions retardation. I've never met an Atheist or even a progressive Christian (Episcopalians and United Untarians, for example) that weren't cool with the idea of same-sex marriage. Even the majority of Catholics in NY are only "part-time Catholics."
But then, I'm from NY and the majority of Republicans I know here are only fiscally conservative and still in favor of gay marriage. There's even a sizable number of gay Republicans up here. How do you think Bloomberg got elected?! - tgjerusalem, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4And other people don't relocate. And even in NYC a lot of ***** happens.
And if you're affluent, white, educated US citizen and gay you'll have a very different experience than if you're poor, have no college, an immigrant and gay.
People shouldn't have to relocate. Civil rights and human dignity aren't supposed to be regional things. And the ability to not be treated like ***** shouldn't depend on how privileged you are otherwise. - anillop, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5But I thought he was a Muslim?
/s - zip000, on 06/29/2009, -2/+6I think the "demon" you're wrestling with might just be wearing assless chaps.
- tgjerusalem, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4"Why can't we all just be equal, with no exceptions, and live our lives privately?"
When we are all equal, socially and legally, then we can live our lives privately.
Though even then, I expect parades and parties will continue, because people like a party. Anti-Irish discrimination isn't a problem anymore, but St. Patrick's Day parades (a totally Irish-American Pride invention; it was a solemn religious holiday before that) continue because parades are fun. To celebrate all things Irish doesn't degrade all things non-Irish. And who knows; maybe in 20 years in addition to "Everyone's Irish on St. Patrick's Day" slogans, we'll have "Everyone's Gay on Pride Day" t-shirts too.
And you obviously do feel 'entitled' to the various rights and privileges you're afforded by virtue of being straight, or you would realize that the reason queer people have socially and legally organized is because we don't get them, and we should. - Akairenn, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4No one is truly equal, in terms of raw capability.
I completely fail at math, for example, and I'm pretty sure Stephen Hawking is capable of killing me via a single thought.
That's not what's being discussed here; equality under the law - where we *must* all be equal, is. - Bodhinature, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4Buried for nonsensical statement.
- tgjerusalem, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3It's unfortunate, but not the end of the world. We've never had a president actually support us before, and we've still gotten a hell of a lot done. It would be nice if promises were kept, but like with Bill Clinton, we're not high up on the priority list for straight politicians.
But Obama is at least one of the least actively hostile presidents we've ever had. This isn't ideal, but when ***** sucks, find opportunities as they present themselves.
We aren't going to have a president who supports federal marriage equality in the next four years, but we do have a president and an administration where our criticisms (and the closing of gay wallets) may not go unheeded. We have to keep his feet to the fire on this, because if we are not constant and adamant about the immediate need to address our civil rights we will be easily ignored. And we aren't going to get everything he promised us, because that's politics. But a lot may still happen in the near future. - tgjerusalem, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3Perez Hilton is a ridiculous media whore. He's had his 15 minutes and will be forgotten in a few years. He's no more our 'standard bearer' than Howard Stern is the representative of straight men.
If looking for a celebrity 'standard bearer,' look to longstanding, respectable icons like Ian McKellen or George Takei or Neil Patrick Harris or Elton John or Ellen DeGeneres. Or, god forbid, look outside celebrity circles, and consider Bishop Gene Robinson, or Rep. Barney Frank, or go historical and consider Harvey Milk, Harry Hay, Magnus Hirschfeld, Alan Turing, Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, etc. - Elranzer, on 06/29/2009, -3/+6Sounds more like it's you that hates the gays. And you're probably one of them in secret.
- enderu, on 06/29/2009, -1/+4Oh, gee, maybe the opening of the Declaration of Independence?
