- consonance, on 12/21/2009, -5/+33Wow, who shoved The Iliad up your ass?
- RockLobstah, on 12/21/2009, -5/+24"For those who haven’t been following the game, Dante’s Inferno is based on the Divine Comedy written by Dante Alighieri. You must battle through the Nine Circles of Hell to reclaim you love Beatrice."
The plot can in no way be said to be "based" on the Divine Comedy. Beatrice trapped in hell? Seriously? This perverts one of the most beautiful, pertinent pieces of literature ever created for commercial purposes, and not in any way that will stimulate discussion. - wawaweewa2, on 12/21/2009, -3/+20You say that as if God of War followed Greek literature to a T.
- cyrix, on 12/22/2009, -0/+13Did you just have a stroke?
- Frankzulla, on 12/21/2009, -5/+17This game looks gorgeous.
- DaigojiGai, on 12/21/2009, -3/+14Looks very promising, and glad the reviewer put to rest the childish and asinine GoW3 vs. DI comparisons. There is room for both... that is like saying we can't have COKE and PEPSI... *facepalm*
Nice little preview. Can't wait to get my hands on the demo to see for myself. - mau64, on 12/21/2009, -3/+14people keep giving this game a hard time, but I think i'll still give it a shot.
- joshuawest, on 12/21/2009, -4/+13I'm not really a gamer, but recently watched my cousin play God of War 2 for many hours.
He then played the demo of Dante's Inferno. Immediately I asked whether it was somehow related to GoW2 and whether the game engine was the same, etc. He said no.
I continued to watch and was reminded more and more of GoW2, and cannot see how they could release this game having no connection to GoW2 or the company.
It's GoW2 with better graphics and a slightly different storyline (of which, it is pretty damn close also!).
Someone tell me my cousin is wrong and this game uses the same engine or has some connection? - mywhitenoise, on 12/21/2009, -9/+17play the demo, it looks like *****.
I'd rather replay the first 2 God Of War games. Dante's Inferno is a complete clone of GOW, down to the controls. - MaTT2011, on 12/21/2009, -3/+10Looks like the paragon of modern gameplay development and publishment.
AKA :
1. find an original story/setting (but dont create it yourself, god forbid someone do something NEW)
2. bastardize the hell out of it
3. attach a shallow shell of a gameplay model from a superior genre/game that is well known without capturing the depth of said model.
4. ???
5. PROFIT!!!! - cyrix, on 12/22/2009, -2/+9You've played God of War 3? CAN I COME OVER TO YOUR HOUSE?!?!?!?!
- PartyCat, on 12/21/2009, -2/+9What to expect from Dante's Inferno:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/12/16/ - pwarnock, on 12/21/2009, -5/+12Way to keep history alive ;)
- FaithclubDotNet, on 12/21/2009, -1/+7That is Electronic Arts for you: Release the same game over and over every year hoping you'll buy for roster changes.
Now they're stealing other people's games and repackaging them. If it sells, they'll do it again next year with the same game style.
EA is the pits for originality. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't buy off successful companies to stifle competition. - antonymarceles, on 12/21/2009, -4/+9waiting to get my hands on it on Fed 10th
- fritzmusic, on 12/22/2009, -0/+5So I was watching some of the game trailers and started wondering who lays all the concrete platforms in hell. Is that like first circle work or something?
- hoodedrobin, on 12/21/2009, -0/+5The last level is going to be really ***** cold...
- Cerebron, on 12/22/2009, -2/+7God of War doesn't titled after any particular Greek epic, it's just set in the mythos, while DI actually uses the Italian poem's name, and pretends it's based on the story, while it's really a million miles away from it. Apples and oranges.
The only reason the Inferno gets so much attention is because few people ever get past it, which is unfortunate, because while Purgatory is a slow and fairly dull journey, it's worth it to read Paradise, which far outstrips Inferno in beauty and feeling.
Any familiarity with Paradise should provide sufficient reason to be dismayed and frankly, amused by this pathetic attempt to use the Divine Comedy as a story base. The poem should provide ample fodder for brilliant games, but (even if the game is brilliant) this game's story appears to be a laughably bad attempt by an emo school kid.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/21/2009, -5/+9my girlfriend was asking the same thing when she saw me playing the demo. GOWIII is going to kick the ***** out of this in terms of gameplay, graphics, and presentation.
I had a huge grin the whole way through the GOWIII demo, and the whole time I played the Dante demo I kept thinking "this was done in the last 2 GOW games". - mrMunchies, on 12/21/2009, -4/+7Looks promising.
- MaTT2011, on 12/21/2009, -4/+7What to expect? I've been expecting a gross perversion of literature that plays exactly like GOW.
Who needs originality when you can have games like this? Not only is the gameplay derivitive but so is everything else.
The one area where they COULD have injected something new was in the character design, but "dante" has the most ridiculous and boring design since i cruised the local gamestores bargain bin.
It might turn out to be a solid GOW ripoff but god help us if this game sells well, we will see yet ANOTHER huge wave of games that are carbon copies of eachother. Because buying the same product over and over again is the name of the game. - tas08, on 12/22/2009, -2/+5As much as I am excited to get and play this game, it makes me sad. Dante wasn't even born until the 13th century (article says game starts in 12th), and if they were looking for battles, Dante was deeply involved with the battles in his hometown between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines (a civil war of sorts) rather than cop out and just make him a crusader. Oh, and wasn't some simple nobody either.
Hell, mostly everything plot-wise is made up or horribly butchered, and that sad part to me is that they could have really retained a lot of the basic actual story of Dante's inferno and still made this game very much the way it is. As it stands, they made up a completely new storyline and just used the names from a classic piece of literature. - elmuerte17, on 12/21/2009, -0/+3Doesn't pretty much every video game or movie created pervert history or literature in some way?
- mattyboy555, on 12/21/2009, -1/+3Same Company who made Dead Space. Some would say that is a Resident Evil 5 Clone, but I thought it was better than RE5 was.
- XenoSNK, on 12/21/2009, -0/+2I noticed this too. A bad way to start off your article is with a sentence that doesn't make sense.
- GODDESSGeri, on 02/07/2010, -0/+2...
I love you - 1jaxstate1, on 12/21/2009, -2/+4I've played the Demo, and it's pretty sweet. Very God of War like, but that's not a bad thing.
- Namesbond, on 01/28/2010, -1/+3GOW Clone
- mouseattacks, on 12/23/2009, -0/+2This game looks very promising.
- lastmaster, on 12/22/2009, -0/+2I preordered GOWIII and Dante's Inferno. The only ***** part about that is I had to go to gamestop to do it.
- Anub1s, on 01/28/2010, -0/+2Can't wait for this to come out. I've been a God of War fan since the first one and having this and GoW III come out within weeks of each other is heaven for me. I love the epic stories and the beautiful imagery. I've always loved the Divine Comedy epic Poem by Alighieri, and seeing this brought to life through adaption is awesome.
- frygar, on 12/22/2009, -1/+2A thousand diggs to you, sir. You speak the truth.
- kickballs247, on 12/28/2009, -0/+1That could be because it has nothing at all to do with the book. Dante was not a crusader who went to hell to get his naked girlfriend back from some demons and evil babies.
- Infidelephant, on 02/18/2010, -0/+1Was highly impressed for the first 3rd of the game - then it all fell to *****.
Boring and morbidly repetitive. - ace429k, on 12/21/2009, -1/+2Wow thats pretty clever of you!
- NightmareCV, on 12/21/2009, -0/+1I'd like to know what errors you see
- frygar, on 12/22/2009, -1/+2I'm thinking EA is betting that no one has actually read through the Divine Comedy. and is working the "ooh, nine levels of hell! Awesome!" angle instead.
That being said, it looks very similar to Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights" which isn't a bad thing. In fact, I'd say it's pretty awesome. - Raidy11Moon, on 12/21/2009, -3/+4GOW III, will send Dante back to the grave, if you have played the new GOW III Demo youll see that the game is living up to all the hype
- ChinezePanda, on 02/16/2010, -0/+1Dante's Inferno completely died the last 2 circles. Not to mention the gauntlet at the end was ***** pathetic.
God Of War 3 will destroy this game.
I beat dante in 6 hours, returned to GF and that was that. - mywhitenoise, on 12/21/2009, -3/+4Dead Space was an example of a "good" rip-off.
Dante's Inferno is an example of a "bad" rip-off. - grinnz64, on 01/31/2010, -0/+1I think Penny Arcade called this one. http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/12/16/
- JimmyDThing, on 01/04/2010, -0/+1Judging by the demo, the game is a just a button masher and has less to do with Dante's Inferno than it does showing as much ***** as possible. It's cool looking, but it's not a very fun game, at least in the demo.
- Yargh, on 12/25/2009, -1/+2If God of War was a PC game, Dante's Inferno would be a total conversion mod.
- d1a1s1, on 02/14/2010, -0/+1I bought it...returned it 2 days later and got Bioshock 2. Dont waste your time and money on Dantes BS
- captspaulding, on 12/21/2009, -5/+6I just downloaded the demo on ps3 yesterday, and I was very impressed. I'm buying this game for sure.
- Variyen, on 02/21/2010, -0/+1I thought I was the only one who felt that way, RockLobstah. I'm glad you pointed it out.
- RockLobstah, on 02/07/2010, -0/+1<3
- Achaean, on 01/30/2010, -3/+4The Iliad is ancient Greek, the Divine Comedy is Italian. If he's commenting on Italian literature, why would ancient Greek literature be shoved up his ass?
- inactive, on 01/30/2010, -0/+1How can something be "original" but not "new"?
- mushrooms538, on 02/12/2010, -0/+1wait....don't the circles of hell get colder as you go down in the divine comedy? Whats with all the fire?
