- OhFrak, on 10/11/2007, -26/+136From the general feedback around the Net I would say it is likely even less than 0.1 percent.
After selling my 360 and picking up a PS3 it is amazing just how much better designed and built the machine is. Solid, quiet, and elegant. I've seen pictures of the 360 and PS3 motherboards and the 360's looks like some piece of junk put together in someone's garage. - huhCooL, on 10/11/2007, -19/+125The PS3 might cost more, but higher quality comes a bigger price tag, like almost all things in life. You get what you pay for.

Thread title: "PS3 failure rate less than 1 percent"
Article: "PS3 and Wii failure rates less than 1 percent"
Excellent cropping their, subby -- your loyalties are well disguised. Why are there so few people who aren't fanboys? - ripstuntz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+64The key is putting tape over the holes that air is suppose to flow through...
- KMye, on 10/11/2007, -8/+66FTA: "Simple mathematics tells us that the more there are out there the more of a chance that some will fail, but 33% is still very high."
The author apparently doesn't understand simple mathematics. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/11/2007, -19/+68For $600 it better not ***** break!
- akshay626, on 10/11/2007, -6/+49PS3 motherboard does indeed look the sexiest.
- JayD16, on 10/11/2007, -8/+46Its already obvious that after a nuclear war the only things left standing will be roaches, twinkies, and nintendo products... Whats wrong with point out that the PS3 is pretty solid also.
- sugarhigh4242, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32Please making sales comparisons are wasting their breath.
360's were having serious problems from Day-1. I was working at Circuit City at the 360's launch, and we went through 4 demo units before the end of the year. And that's in the official display case, which is basically an aluminum wind-tunnel. If 360's were dying in that environment, its no surprise users are having such widespread problems.
The 360 has a fundamental design flaw related to the way the heatsinks are attached to the motherboard. Its well-documented online, and I can confirm because I was able to purchase a red-ring'd 360 for under $100, and repair it by using regular screws to mount the heatsinks.
PS3 is an expensive piece of tech, but it is very well-designed hardware. Running Folding@Home, a scientific application that is by far the heaviest load on the processor, the system buzzes along QUIETER than the 360 IDLES. You can complain about the price, and the current game lineup, but the PS3 hardware is beyond reproach. - Smwbigboss, on 10/11/2007, -11/+42A better rule of thumb "If it's from Microsoft, expect it to crash." Looks like the Wii60 movement is turning into PSWii.
- diggrim, on 10/11/2007, -5/+35sad fact from article: due to the high failure rate of an unnamed console "EB games officials revise[d] their console warranty policy in 2007 and as a result the one year warranty price on a console is now nearly double!"
- JigoroKano, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29My PS3 is quiet as a mouse. You probably have a defective fan. You're almost in that lucky less than 1%!
- Tsen, on 10/11/2007, -6/+31Hopefully it keeps it up. My friend's pissed enough about his $300 360 breaking. If his $600 PS3 broke, he'd kill something...
- xTRUMANx, on 10/11/2007, -13/+37Wii is expensive (compared with consoles of it's kind: ps2, gamecube, xbox). PS3 is expensive compared to 360.
- NGliam, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26If it was a PS3 fanboy then wouldn't it have mentioned the Xbox360s 33% failure rate? Also roxya makes a great point.
- diggrim, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26The front-page picture is funny: http://www.ripten.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/xbox-360_death_33.jpg
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -8/+29For $400 the 360 better not break too...err $450 with that warranty. ;)
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -6/+27So Renton, you think technologically the Wii is in the same league as the PS3 and 360? Quit smoking crack my friend. There's a reason that the Wii is the getting PS2, Gamecube, and PSP ports, and not getting ports from 360 and PS3. The proof is pretty self evident.
- roxya, on 10/11/2007, -13/+32Well, failures are nearly always heat related. It's easier to keep a low power system cooler. With the 360 and PS3, we're talking about CPUs and GPUs that run very fast and very hot.
Do you _really_ believe the Wii should draw as much comparison to the 360 as the PS3 does when we're talking about hardware issues? It ain't fanboyism. - diggrim, on 10/11/2007, -14/+33Everyone knows the Wii is awesome...it's not even news that it has a low failure rate.
- unusualbob, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22you are screwed
- Smwbigboss, on 10/11/2007, -5/+22The Wii produces quite a bit of heat as well. Try leaving it on Wii connect24 all day, then feel it. It's just that Nintendium is indestructable.
- diggrim, on 10/11/2007, -7/+24but the inverse is not always true: higher price does not bring higher quality. IMHO, it's not as simple as "you get what you pay for." You get what you pay for with research and careful selection of purchases, IMHO. I've bought less expensive things that have higher quality than more expensive namebrand equivalents. just my $.02.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21Well, I have a Wii and a PS3, and I haven't turned my Wii on in 3 months. I use my PS3 every day. That's my proof anyway. The PS3 has a lot of solid games coming out, and the Wii has mountains of crap coming out. The only exception is Metroid, which I will buy...and hopefully it will be good and make full use of the Wiimote. If it doesn't make full use of the wiimote, I'm going to finally bail on the Wii, I think. The only truly refined Wiimote game so far is Wii Sports, which was great fun for a few months, but at the end of the day, the Wii needs more Wiimote games to carry it. Otherwise, why am I paying $50 for gamecube looking games, when I can buy beautiful games like Lair for the PS3 which have solid motion controls and the most advanced next gen physics, lighting, and graphics? Lair to me is the crown jewel of motion control games, and when it comes out next month, the PS3 is going to have the best game for motion controls on it, hands down.
- KMye, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18You do. The first part of his statement is talking about quantity, while the second part refers to a percentage, or ratio.
- RoundysSince, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17Consoles are usually locked in a small enclosed space with very little air flow, which could lead the machine to overheat.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16My PS3 is never loud. The fan kicks in every once in a great while, but it's really quite rare, and it's not loud at all. You can barely hear it.
- Falc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15to keep the dust out... right... i heard about that... good tip
- Ndiggnation, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14I hate to say it, because I really do love the Wii, but I agree. I have a GC, Wii, PS2 and PS3. I've barely turned on the Wii in the last six months. I do think it's a blast to play, but only in a social setting. It's not really much fun to play by yourself. If I want to just chill and play a game, it's the PS2 or PS3.
Now, if I want to have alot of fun with some friends and some beer, it's the Wii. While it may disappoint some, the Wii just doesn't have enough non-kid (I hate to say it, because I don't mind non-mature games) games that justify the $50. If I do buy a Wii game, I buy it used. Now, when some of the better Wii games come out, I'm really hoping it all changes. I could see myself being addicted to SM Galaxy for quite a while..
Neither next gen system I have (Wii or PS3) really has enough "must-have" games yet, to be fair. So, I still play PS2 games more than any other. (FFXII is a long freaking game) - kingfoot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14you're a dumbass.
- Dmatias, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15I work at a best buy and 360's are returned much more often then ps3 but they are also bought more often
- xTRUMANx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16There's around 3.5 million ps3 sold. Even if there was a 1000 sold, Sony has been mass producing so failure rates should have been the same if it sold well or not.
- Tikkimann, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15"when another EB Games manager was asked if the store warranty was “worth the price”, he mentioned that the Nintendo Wii, with hundreds of units sold at their location has had ZERO come back as defective. We can hear Nintendo executives patting themselves on the back right now, no wait that’s just thunder."
LOL - Eggman, on 10/11/2007, -6/+19Just wait.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -8/+20The Wii isn't in the same league as the PS3 and 360 power wise. It's using old (proven) technology, with slow processors and limited power. The Wii's hardware costs next to nothing, hence Nintendo making a profit right off the bat. Sony is taking a huge loss on their hardware because they didn't skimp on quality. The 360 was taking a large hit money wise as well, but the problem is they didn't invest in quality. Nintendo on the other hand is making loads of money on the actual Wii, so they can obviously afford the quality. In other words, when you buy a Wii, you're getting less than what you paid for, in terms of the cost of manufacture. WIth the PS3 you're getting a lot MORE than you pay for. With the 360, you're getting more than you pay for initially, but those warranties and repairs add up. Plus what fun is it to send your console in for repair? Who wants to deal with that headache. The fact of the matter is that you're getting the best bang for your buck with the ps3.
- DollaDollaBill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12i own both as well and i couldn't agree with you more. I am looking forward to mario galaxy and metroid prime, but everything else for the system has not been worth $50 a game. I have over a dozen games for the Wii, and all of them are pretty ***** after the first hour of gameplay.
- phoenixp3k, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15What ever you buy, what ever the price shouldn't have a failure rate of 33% (previous digg story) unless it's clearly mentionned on the box!
- mrASSMAN, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16Ha, I've been staring at my 360's motherboard for hours just trying to fix some problems I've been having.. it's a bit of a mess. But, the 360 has a fantastic power port.. it is very well supported on the motherboard. That's basically the best thing I can say about the architecture.
As for my problem: I'm getting degraded frame rates on nearly every game. If you can help me at all, PLEASE reply to this! - chedabob, on 10/11/2007, -8/+20That's like saying chopsticks have a low failure rate. The Wii has nothing as technologically advanced as the PS3 and the 360.
- Renton, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Did you ever try folding@home? The PS3 is very good at dispensing heat. These failure rates are most likely just factory defects.
- unusualbob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11either that or he has a really echoey cabinet that he keeps it in.
or he can hear too well....just go set off fireworks next to your ear blueprint. - fadetoone, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12@drobati
He's retarded because he doesn't agree with your arbitrary opinion? That's... well... retarded. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13The reply button *****, do you use it?
- Daniel591992, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Unless that thing happens to be a cell phone ;)
*hides* - charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Over at neogaf one of the users recently did the best, most scientific test I've seen done, which put the failure rate at a minimum of 25%. They have a listing of users who have put their name down over there for getting together on XBox Live. They ALSO have a list of people who have said their XBox's have broken on NeoGaf. He cross referenced the list of actual users signed up to be part of their group, which numbered over 750, with the list of users that have said their XBox's have broken. 25% of the people signed up to be on the list of 360 gamers had had at least one 360 fail.
The reason that this is the best sample is because it removes Wii and PS3 fanboys from taking part in the polling. It takes an unwilling group of people posting on different topics and samples them without their knowledge. We know they are real 360 users, and they have no reason to lie about their 360 being broken. The only flaw with the sample is that it puts 25% as the minimum failure rate, because there are probably some people with broken 360's on the user list that didn't voluntarily put their name on the list of people that have had 360's break. So to be clear, to be counted as having a failed 360 they had to be on the user group list for the 360, and then they also had to have posted that their 360 had broken in the other thread. It is a 1:1 comparison.
At this point it's safe to say they have at least a 25% failure rate. We've got EB Games saying it, MicroMart, and now the best polling data sample possible confirming what everyone suspected. - kingfoot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Im a PSWii person myself. and honestly, ive given about equal time to both. both have their qualities. for gaming. the wii cant even play dvds. and more than $1k blu-ray drive for $600 is not a fair saying, because it also plays games, handles your media, and interfaces with your PSP and now networks/computers. AND if need be, be used as a computer itself.
also, drobati, you're an idiot, how does a game selection get worse? - Boreras, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11actually, the PS3 doesn't sell that bad, it approximately sold as much as the 360 did one year ago.
based on http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php - xTRUMANx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Hey Bodhesatva, there's been alot of PS3 hate around these parts. Obviously, PS3 owners would be doing this aswell...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Im glad you didnt becuase that would just expose what an absolute tool you are.
Oh, you did - tool. -
