- inactive, on 06/29/2008, -4/+49I do hope I'll be able to connect to friends wirelessly through the use of an ingenious friend-code system, where I'll be able to draw ***** on a chat window to annoy them when I win. I recall that being a feature of another, similar system.
- MaxMWood, on 06/29/2008, -0/+43What the hell are digital tactile pixels?
- dougvfr750, on 06/29/2008, -2/+39Seems like a handheld with touchscreen has been done already. The patent must include the digital tactile pixels or I'm wondering what's that different.
- amrush4th, on 06/29/2008, -4/+29Screw you iPhone...her comes the pPhones
- lead2thehead, on 06/29/2008, -3/+27You guys aren't getting it. A TACTILE touch screen means that when they draw a button on the screen, you can actually feel it with your finger. The main complaint about the iPhone's keyboard is the lack of tactile response. It's easier to type with old fashioned mechanical buttons because you can feel where they are. If Sony has invented tactile touchscreen, that's a huge advancement.
- LiamIsOnFire, on 06/29/2008, -12/+31Patent for a video game console != Evidence of a video game system to be released in the future.
Nintendo patented a mobile phone like, 10 years ago or something. As you can see, there is no Nintendo mobile phone.

Feature released October 19, 2006 - 2:46 p.m. - inactive, on 06/29/2008, -19/+32Sony has gotten so bad at copying other companies stuff, that now they even think they invented it!
budoom-chaa! - Fafnir43, on 06/29/2008, -2/+12Also, the original PSX controller is an SNES controller with two extra shoulder buttons and a slightly different shape. The layout is identical.
- inactive, on 06/29/2008, -3/+12Just because some ***** retard like you can't figure it out doesn't mean it's impossible.
- jaychuck, on 06/29/2008, -3/+11By this logic, the iPhone isn't original and Rock Band isn't original, but who really cares? They are great products, as I hope this device will be.
- lead2thehead, on 06/29/2008, -2/+10Why are you asking me that? I didn't invent the thing. All I did was tell you what "tactile" meant. They never said that the screen's surface was raisable, or even that it was LCD. Maybe it's flexible display with buttons underneath it. Maybe it's like the OLED keyboard. Why do you immediately jump to the conclusion that it can't possibly exist?
And for clarification, YOU don't draw objects on the screen. The software does. When those pretty pictures pop up on your screen, the software developers refer to that as "drawing" an object. For someone who's profile says "20 years experience in the IT industry", I'd expect you to know that. - FoxOrian, on 06/29/2008, -2/+10You could at least try to be more convincing in your statements? "Nintendo patented a phone like, 10 years ago or something," isn't exactly a great way to say it. How about linking a source for proof..?
Also I don't understand your point. Patent for a video game console is evidence that one will be released whereas a patent for a phone is evidence that it will probably never happen? What?
Last time I checked, Sony was actually IN the phone market. - Alex.w, on 06/29/2008, -0/+7Maybe it doesn't raise, maybe it just feels different in some way.. metal vs plastic. That's still tactile.
- kickass911, on 06/29/2008, -8/+15I'm still holding out for the Zune phone
- Stroggoth, on 06/30/2008, -0/+7WAIT a second, folks. I'm not seeing a patent here, just an application and it was filed this year so it could NOT have granted yet. Where is the issued patent? There is NONE because it hasn't even been examined.
Is this another idiot who doesn't understand that patents are published as filed long before grant so that people can file oppositions?
DUGG DOWN for inaccurate title - there is no issued patent here. The USPTO has not yet examined it. - Ajajadude, on 06/29/2008, -6/+13And bashing Sony's gaming department is original?
- pigducksheep, on 06/29/2008, -5/+11I really like my PSP. This sounds interesting.
- marx2k, on 06/30/2008, -1/+7Please tell me you copy/pasted that from somewhere and didn't sit around researching that
- jaychuck, on 06/29/2008, -1/+7Who cares if this isn't "original" or not? (in fact, nowadays, what is?) This seems like a great idea for all portable gaming devices. Touchpad games are fun, plain and simple.
As for the "PSP2" As long as they keep their joystick (but fix it up a bit and maybe add another) and make the original PSP games BC, then I would buy this inn an instant, especially because I lost my last PSP and I've been waiting to hear some solid info on the next device before I bought another one. - funwithgoats, on 06/29/2008, -2/+8Keyword: tactile.
- Gimpyfuzznut, on 06/29/2008, -1/+6The Zune really does have a great interface. They really should get some of the interface designers for the Zune to work on Windows Mobile's next versions.
- hydratedsquash, on 06/29/2008, -2/+6Olfactory pixels.
- petikeke, on 06/30/2008, -1/+5You are looking at things very ignorantly. In terms of, lets say, a handheld games console, some form of tactile touch screen buttons would be much better. Yes for your average tablet pc/palm pilot, the other technologies are more suitable. But for a controller, you need to feel buttons, try playing any button based iPhone game, it feels wrong and half the time you don't even know if you pressing the button.
I think there is gonna be lots of innovation in this field, its hardly going to be old/clumsy. - CaviMike, on 06/29/2008, -3/+7I want my 2 minutes back.
- khyberkitsune, on 06/29/2008, -6/+10And just HOW have they figured out how to make an LCD surface raisable? Sounds like I'd have problems continuing to draw somethign if the surface of the screen raised itself so I could feel it.
- BlueSkyfish, on 06/29/2008, -12/+16Shinythingy, he said nothing about Nintendo. Game.com was made by Tiger Electronics, which classifies as "other companies."
@Schmich, off the top of my head...
D pad
button diamond
shoulder button
analog stick
rumble
motion controls
wi-fi - bhavinp, on 06/29/2008, -0/+3The marvels of technology.
- inactive, on 06/29/2008, -1/+4This isn't a patent for a "handheld device with a touchscreen". It actually describes an entire device, which seems stupid to me because you could make a device that didn't implement all the features they describe and not violate the patent. The most interesting thing is the "tactile pixels" which according to the patent, are a series of "buttons" around the edge of the screen which can be either pressed by the user or by the device itself.
The example they give in the patent is if you were scrolling down through a web page, the button would raise itself once you reached the end of the page. - mattocksrider, on 06/29/2008, -1/+4They haven't been granted anything yet. This is just a published application, it'll be another 2 years, if ever, before they're granted a patent.
- Intrexed, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3It's actually very popular in Japan and Korea. Everybody on the subway is either reading the paper or watching TV. Why would you complain about having this capability on your phone? It makes no sense... 70 channels on your phone is much more impressive than a PSP with the ability to call somebody. Bury me down, but do so knowing you're wrong.
- Vash3001, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Just make a PSP 2....
- veriix, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3I think you need to recheck your dates.
- Stroggoth, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3"They haven't figured out how to do it yet, they just realised no one else had patented it. "
Wrong, you have to describe how to implement it in the patent application. You cannot predictively patent, a person having skill in the art must be able to implement it without undue experimentation based on the patent specification. - shamanking911, on 06/30/2008, -1/+4i dunno why but i laughed, *diggs*
- Rikkochet, on 06/29/2008, -7/+10It's a touchscreen that responds to pressure - like a Palm Pilot. It's basically a screen you can touch with gloves on.
There are other types (capacitative, resistive) that either require a special stylus (see tablet PCs and drawing tablets) or skin contact with the screen to pick up your movement.
In short, it's a pretty ***** old technology because it's clumsier than the newer ones. - inactive, on 06/29/2008, -2/+5o.O
- rakous, on 06/29/2008, -1/+3Sony and Nintendo are not the same company. His point was that even though Nintendo (might have) patented a mobile phone they never produced any leading to the assumption Sony might not release anything as well.
- Jenadae, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3I hear that new Wii thing has a steady flow of good games coming out for it >.>
- DreamSynthesis, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2From the article it states that the device responds by vibrating when certain pixels are touched.
- HolyChimp, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2We've had TV on phones for a while now in the UK, but they never took off because they wanted to charge about the same as TV costs in your house, plus any bandwidth charges. For £5 a month I'd go for TV on my phone. For £20 a month, not so much.
- chemam, on 06/30/2008, -0/+214. The device of claim 10 wherein the device is configured to be used as game device, phone, portable media player, email device, web browser device or navigation device.
- inactive, on 06/29/2008, -1/+3Which is exactly why expectations should be set high for whatever this is.
- AvidPreatorian, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3i've spotted a fanboy
- frontporsche, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2What's the "[sic]" for? The couple dictionaries I checked seem to prefer "hand-held" over "handheld", if that's it.
- Orcmors, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2It's been three years, just let it go. Almost every article about Sony has at least one person bringing it up. Whichever camp you're shooting from, I assure you, has had at least some shady dealings. Nintendo was caught price fixing and I'm not even gonna bother naming Microsoft's misdeeds.
- HolyChimp, on 06/29/2008, -2/+4They haven't figured out how to do it yet, they just realised no one else had patented it. That's how patents work. Then in 10 years when someone actually makes it Sony can claim their hard earned royalties.
- jo21, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2OH i didn't get your sarcarms first.
but yeah, the wii have no good games comming out since brawl.
/me goes back playing gta4 and metal gear solid 4.. metal gear online is fun btw. - gindc, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2This is a published application for a patent. This is not a patent. Just a publication. Calm down people.
