- JohnKappa, on 10/25/2008, -9/+53After upgrading to the latest firmware, mine is now screwed. It won't play any games or movies, the oading bubble just sits there animating away. The hard drive doesn't even wind up. That's *****!!!
How can a company as big as sony put out a firmware that screws your system.
"Users found that removing and reformatting their PS3 hard drive and then reinserting it into the console would get the system to boot completely, after which it asks to reformat the disk again and everything runs normally." - I'm not sure I wqant to do this either. - mywhitenoise, on 07/02/2008, -13/+57It's funny, all the people who are posting "My PS3 is fine after the update" are getting buried.
- wrenchone, on 07/02/2008, -13/+56Sony's going for a full match to the 360, bricked updates and all.
- Spampy, on 07/02/2008, -6/+46This is really a bit upsetting, seeing as all of these features would finally bring my PS3 up to the XBOX's features in a number of areas. Oh well, please fix it soon, Sony!
- timbro1, on 07/02/2008, -10/+42i can confirm this story
- inactive, on 07/02/2008, -21/+50no problems here..... i love my ps3
- Nerovingian, on 07/02/2008, -17/+46I updated mine this morning on my 60gb launch system, and have had no problems at all. As a guy who has had 2 360s rrod on him, I know how much it sucks to lose your system, but I doubt the 2.4 problem is really that widespread.
- mdaize, on 07/02/2008, -13/+36I had my 80gb updated this morning and it has worked fine for me... the XMB in-game has worked wonders with friend list messaging...
- Cossa, on 07/02/2008, -2/+24Because, seriously....they're reading the comments here searching for an answer on how to fix their software bug.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 07/02/2008, -2/+22Then wait for an official response from Sony - perhaps they'll have a fix that doesn't require wiping your drive.
- rick2k, on 07/02/2008, -17/+35Works fine for me!
- mywhitenoise, on 07/02/2008, -2/+19It'd be pretty easy. Just update the corrected firmware update by USB flashdrive.
- nogami, on 07/02/2008, -3/+19Don't be silly. The RROD is a hardware failure. This is a problematic firmware upgrade.
Solution 1 is to reformat your drive on a different system and reinstall it.
Solution 2 will likely be something like unplugging the drive, boot the system, apply a new firmware upgrade, power down, put the drive back in and power on again.
Neither of which requires a trip back to the manufacturer. - ryanlynds, on 07/02/2008, -2/+17"This may be a temporary move to prevent further reliability issues."
um, no ***** *****. - SkippyDoorknob, on 07/02/2008, -1/+15It's not misinformation - Sony has indeed pulled the update from their servers. Did it break everyone? No. But it broke enough people that they felt the need to take immediate action.
- Luigison, on 07/02/2008, -9/+22NeoGAF has a thread on this:
Quote:
---1. Did this update brick your PS3?
---2. Define "brick" in your case
---3. If it did brick your system, how many times did you reboot your PS3 before it bricked?
And all the over 150 answers so far have been:
1 - No.
2 - N/A
3 - N/A - PikkonX, on 07/02/2008, -12/+24I downloaded mine last night and it's been working fine with no issues. Hopefully they can find a fast fix for those who were affected.
- logicalnoise, on 07/02/2008, -2/+13if a console is bricked and won't even boot then that's a problem. suposedly if you yank your HDD and reformat with a PC the console will boot but then you lose all your non-backed up data.
- WhereAmI, on 07/02/2008, -2/+13Because they can get a virus that causes you to completely lose everything with no warranty on Virus Damage from anybody to fix anything?
- ju5si, on 07/02/2008, -5/+16Actually this "bricking" IS a feature of X360 so actually now the PS3 is closer to the X360 than ever. Sadly.
- mywhitenoise, on 07/02/2008, -5/+16yeah, that one is free from bricking!
- Sniper, on 07/02/2008, -3/+13Except it's not a hardware issue...
- RadiatedAnt, on 07/02/2008, -2/+11lol isn't that something to look forward to, it'd be nice to add features that are innovating not catchup.
- Sniper, on 07/02/2008, -1/+9You have to press the PS button and agree to the license before it can install.
- mdaize, on 07/02/2008, -6/+14the PS3 is still rock solid....
this is a firmware problem that is intermittent and affecting a small percentage of ps3 users. the hardware is still very reliable - Sunscreen, on 07/02/2008, -7/+14I can't play UT3 online since the update. The system crashes and I have to restart.
- Gonzell, on 07/02/2008, -13/+20Mine works, tehehehe ^_^
- haroonie, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6ps3 2.40

playstation 3 firmware 2.40
if you dare..! not responsible for your ps3 f'in up! - Jaryd2006, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6Oh god, lost data, Youve reminded me of that holiday demo disk sony sent out that erased memory cards......*Cries for lost data*
- Jpardue, on 07/02/2008, -19/+25It bricks your system....
- misterkim27, on 07/02/2008, -8/+14Hm. Weird, I updated mine last night as soon as it went live and everything seemed to work ok. Haven't tried to play a game yet but everything else was fine.
- dandonia, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6What a complete balls up - first they add in game XMB and every thinks you're going to be able to do all the xbox stuff - then they release the FAQ that proves you still can't voice chat, launch the XMB mid PS2 game or invite people to games if they aren't playing the same as you. Come on Sony sort it out.
- GoMegaMan426, on 07/02/2008, -1/+7I left my PS3 downloading the update this morning. I pray that when I come home it's bootable.
- Luigison, on 07/02/2008, -2/+8http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32408 ...
- WhereAmI, on 07/02/2008, -2/+8I can but I have no idea what can be done to fix your problem except wait it out. Sorry. It always sucks having one less person playing UT3 as there aren't enough playing that game.
- DraxusD, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6Sorry too late, you invalidated your entire argument with that little grammatical error.
- BavarianBuilt, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6Updated my 60gb this afternoon and it works just fine. In game XMB works great and the new trophy system is great as well. I am currently watching a blu-ray movie with flawless playback. From what I read in the long thread on the official PS3 forums, this issue only happens to systems while they restart after the update. If you have updated to 2.40 and your system works, you are fine.
- soupdawg30, on 07/02/2008, -3/+8Hmm I was wondering why I wasn't prompted to update when I signed in.
- charlescheese, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5Get a PS3. Seriously, it's an awesome system, and 2.4 makes it even more awesome. Over at NeoGaf about 400 people from the forum have posted and only one had an issue with the update, and he was able to fix it. There certainly are a small percentage of people having a problem, but it's nowhere near as sensational as Kotaku has made it out to be.
- JayD16, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5@ HolyChimp
Its the same either way. MS just requires that all 360 games support the feature. - coheedcollapse, on 07/02/2008, -6/+11Because people can't wrap their heads around the fact that people who have problems are going to be MUCH more vocal than those of us who had no problems. They go to the forums and see 20 posts about people with problems and immediately think that the majority of PS3 owners are effected by the problem when in actuality most of us who successfully updated aren't just going to post about it unprovoked.
Granted, ANY amount of problems of this magnitude brought about by a firmware update is unacceptable. Let's hope Sony gets on the ball and fixes this stuff if it's their fault.
To those who are having problems but can still access their PS3, I suggest backing up all of your important data and doing a format. Apparently that fixes everything 100%. - username9000, on 07/02/2008, -2/+7Yes, that is what I was referring to.
I have no desire to plug in a keyboard or use a bluetooth keyboard with my console. I have less desire to use the controller to type with.
When they come out with voice chat I will use that, like I do on the 360. - WhereAmI, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5No, in game music is not supported in the way you are thinking of. A game has to enable custom soundtracks for it to work which is pretty stupid as this is how it worked this whole time.
- mywhitenoise, on 07/02/2008, -3/+8Then how come I could play in-game soundtracks for High Velocity Bowling, and Super Stardust last Winter?
Having in-game soundtracks was always up to the developers to implement. You would think Sony would be smart and make it universal. - charlescheese, on 07/03/2008, -0/+5Unplug your keyboard. Apparently it's an issue with SOME keyboards. I'm sure they'll patch it quick.
- GodIsntReal, on 07/02/2008, -9/+13Mine works fine :).
- Sniper, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4If you already successfully installed it, you have nothing to worry about.
- wilsondus, on 07/02/2008, -11/+15GET A PS3!!!! -- oh, and my 60g release system works perfectly...
- shogun042, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4yeah everyone should look at this
i think this problem is overblown... i haven't had a single problem with this and neither has anyone i know.
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32408 ...
read through that thread - 2/549 PS3s have had some locking up issue, meaning 547/549 work fine. seems like this has been drummed up a bit.. - JayD16, on 07/03/2008, -0/+4Yeah, was working fine for me also.
