- MeLikeyTacos, on 07/18/2009, -3/+75When I'm playing a console, I want a controller. That I can hold.
- pahomi, on 07/18/2009, -11/+53"Tech savvy consumers are lining up today to be the first to purchase Sony's brand new piece of ***** that doesn't do the god damn thing it's ***** supposed to!"
- bigthree, on 07/17/2009, -2/+31As long as it doesn't tell others what i am doing when it watches I am cool
- inactive, on 07/18/2009, -1/+23Why DO you keep repeating yourself?
- pahomi, on 07/18/2009, -2/+23It just occurred to me that perhaps i should paste the link to the full report:
http://www.theonion.com/content/video/sony_release ... - coheedcollapse, on 07/18/2009, -4/+25I don't know about facial recognition, but Sony had object tracking software as far back as EyeToy. I remember one of the minigame type things in the "extras" menu was a series of demos in which you'd have the Eyetoy take a snapshot of a brightly colored object in your hand and from there you could use the object as a magic wand to draw shapes and symbols and cast "spells".
- Schmapdi, on 07/18/2009, -0/+19I always thought that Playstation Eye game where you could scan the cards to fight other people looked kinda neat.
I'm surprised Sony never sought a license to the Yugioh people for a game like that, because that's pretty much what they do in the cartoon I think. Scan a card and fight with holograms. - billjimbob, on 07/18/2009, -10/+29Eye = a camera
Natal = 2 cameras with a built-in processor, designed from the ground up for motion control and facial & speech recogntion. - thaprinze, on 07/18/2009, -1/+17The problem here is that Sony comes out with some ground breaking things like the Eye Toy & Playstation Eye, then shows us some tech demos with some pretty amazing things and just as we go ooh & ahh they just stop trying. For example, here are two tech demos for the Playstation Eye from way back before and slightly after its release. We still don't have these features used in any games (except LBP, I think).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNRfyQeFWSs&fea ... - ZenMojo, on 07/18/2009, -0/+16Sony did have this sort of thing in mind. There are tech demos on the joystiq comments section that shows it. Anyone remember that demo with the tank where you could draw a tank on a sheet of paper and turn it into an in-game object with moving parts based off other objects you drew?
If anything, this bodes poorly for the Natal because if Sony had the capability years ago and no one used it, what does that say about Microsoft's chances with the exact same thing? - GodsTwin, on 07/18/2009, -7/+21Can it tell that I'm not impressed?
- Gareth321, on 07/18/2009, -3/+16This would truly be a revolutionary step in modern science.
- ZebraApocalypse, on 07/18/2009, -2/+11Blah blah blah. The current console race is so 2008. Real gamers only talk about what the PS5, XBox Omega, and Nintendo Gnome will be doing in 2020.
- carlosos, on 07/18/2009, -0/+9Did you try some of the PlayStation Eye games? Some of them are really fun and even my mother that normally doesn't play games like some of those games.
- mcsurvey, on 07/18/2009, -1/+10Dugg for the random Hall & Oates video.
- DesEagle, on 07/18/2009, -9/+17False,
that is completely developer-based. The tech was there. This proves the futility of Natal, if anything. - B1665r, on 07/18/2009, -7/+15Yeah, thats the beauty of the Natal. You can use the controllers, while the natal is capturing your facial expressions and pasting them on your model in the FPS. So now you can stick your tongue out at people while you tea bag them.
- NeoTechni, on 07/18/2009, -0/+7And yet, Sony has shown PSeye doing 3D motion capture.
- stklaw, on 07/18/2009, -12/+19If they didn't implement it, then it doesn't mean *****.
- inactive, on 07/18/2009, -6/+12What people don't remember is that around launch time, Sony had a Playstation eye demo in japan where the camera would let you see yourself on the TV, and it would randomly generate very realistic haircuts, and other facial touchups all in real time. Even with the ability to have the person turn or nod in any way they wished. The entire thing was programed for facial reconstruction and motion capture.
Hurrrr inb4 project natal was actually original - chiefbandit2200, on 07/19/2009, -0/+6Probably because you have an inflated sense of self importance. Nobody even said anything about the plane of Eyetoy's motion tracking. Go away.
- bsonline, on 07/18/2009, -4/+9Sony manages to stay technologically ahead of the curve but still falls far behind at design time. if Sony invented the lightsaber, it would be capable of cutting through anything but would only work while plugged in. If they made food, it would either be a dogfood that tasted great but looked -well, like dog food or they would invent a gourmet food that tasted amazing but smelled horrible.
PS3 - best in class hardware, hardest to design for. Even has the elements of great motion gaming in place, but no vision (as of yet) to get the ball rolling. - lotrtrotk, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5"I love ***** like this. Basically I'll buy any god-damn thing I see in an ad"
- OpCzar, on 07/18/2009, -2/+7Ceiling PlayStation Eye is watching you masturbate?
- donnikhan, on 07/18/2009, -2/+7but that's why I'm so fat. I need SOMETHING that resembles exercise
- donnikhan, on 07/18/2009, -2/+7If this is true then why hasn't my minority report GUI access with my hands all flying around happened yet?
Even worse, I won't have to wear those cool gloves! - gordmoo, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5y'know the dsi can recognise faces too... i'm just sayin. not that big a deal. you can also do it in javascript http://blog.kpicturebooth.com/?p=8
i love the sony wand thingy, but this just isn't a big deal. - darrellcskinner, on 07/19/2009, -0/+4You do know that Wal-mart's camera system has facial recognition and watches what you may be interested in purchasing, and what you actually purchase. If you pay in cash your face is associated with a number that the company randomly gives you, once you use a credit card, the face has a name. The goal of this is to replace the unhappy old people greeting people at the door with robots that will make suggestions for you. Example: "Welcome to Wal-mart, last time you were here two weeks ago you purchased toilet paper, based on that it seems you may be interested in picking up more. Isle 6, and theres a sale on Charmin"
- the8thbit, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4Nintendo Gnome?
Nintendo's going open source? - theaceoffire, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5Actually, they have 3 or 4 games out on PSN right now that work with only the camera, no controller.
One lets you move things with hand motions, another raises blocks based on where you stand, the third lets you fly through a painting and the fourth is an aquarium.
They work fine (Although they really tire you out). The rest are not really games, just neat effects (Drawing on screen, etc. - B1665r, on 07/18/2009, -5/+9Or add hock motions in games. Like you just shot the guy the face and you take your hand off controler, natal says, "hey he is gonna do something mo-cap this" and you point your middle finger at the natal. The natal mo-caps that and maps it to your avatar, and your avatar flips off the guy you are pointed at. Brilliant, oh and it just added a whole new level of expressions to fps games.
- the8thbit, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5Why are people digging you down? Those would be great applications for Natal.
- ocharry, on 07/18/2009, -2/+6@Gutterpunk:
Extreme ignorance and information selection based on one's personal objective opinions FTW!
The tech Sony has is extremely similar to Project Natal. Microsoft's tech boasted facial recognition, skeletal recognition, motion detection, and voice recognition. The only thing Sony's tech doesn't have from that is the voice recognition. If you were really out to get Sony you would bash them on why they haven't used this technology to its fullest considering they have had this tech for ages. Read a couple comments down from the Article and a guy mentions that the tech was in the original Eyetoy.
Please do your research before you make a douchebag comment. - the8thbit, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4Leaning to the left and right != exercise. Jesus christ, lay off the twinkies.
That said, I'd really like to see 3D head-tracking, because that is the ***** and is already doable on the Wii. Granted, it's not really possible to implement on the Wii from a business standpoint, as it requires the player to places the remote where the sensor would go, and buy glasses with LED lights, but with Natal it looks like it will be possible with just the normal set up.
Also, I'm hoping the Natal ships with a 'break away' 360 controller, which can split into two sections held in both hands, and also reconnect into one piece. Of course, that will never happen, however, if it did I might actually buy a 360. - MeLikeyTacos, on 07/18/2009, -2/+5I'd just like to add that I'm not stating that I prefer the 360 or the PS3, I own neither. I just want a controller. That is all.
- MeltingIce, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3This *****, it never ends does it?
- NeoTechni, on 07/18/2009, -2/+5There are games with that GUI already on PS3
- chiefbandit2200, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3Eye Toy was actually pretty fun.
- Khast, on 07/18/2009, -7/+10uh...this has been around since the PS2. And yes, the eyetoy could recognize movement on the PS2 as well.
Oh, the EyeToy has been around since 7/4/03, the Wii was released 11/19/06. At this point, who's copying who?
No, I am not a Sony Fanboy, just correcting an uneducated individual. - uberduger, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2They should use their codename for the real name. Like Gamecube. WTF? They shoulda used Dolphin. And Wii was so much better as Revolution.
- RiperSnifle, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2I bought that game, it's called Eye of Judgment. I played it for like 2 days then stopped because the single-player doesn't have a campaign and everyone who plays online already has a killer deck so I can't win.
- number11, on 07/18/2009, -1/+3probably just as bad as each other
the natal dev cam atm cant recognise fists properly or my hairy legs - pinchduck, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2Want to see them in concert? Head to the nearest Wal*Mart opening. They're playing the frozen-foods aisle.
- LostOverThere, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2If Nintendo does what they did with the DSi and add another i, making the Wii 2 called the Wiii someone will need to go to jail for a very long time.
- perkbrian, on 07/18/2009, -2/+4Anyone else thinking what I'm thinking? My crappy little logitech webcam could do it like 10 years ago...doesnt mean it does it well...
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1for 20 sec's
- JudgeMonkey, on 07/18/2009, -1/+2LBP can't do anything like anything in any of those videos, so not even there.
Like with so many other games, LBP just uses the camera as a basic camera. - uberduger, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1I actually really want that.
More Minority Report in my IRL please!!! - Bunkies85, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1Just blow me away with what you do and stop trying to compete!!!!
- B1665r, on 07/18/2009, -2/+3Watch this movie:
