- duggtodeath, on 07/11/2008, -4/+154Dude, can we get AdBlock for PS3?
- nunofgs, on 07/11/2008, -4/+119Well, I guess it depends on how they do it. I wouldn't mind ads placed properly in a game world (like GTA billboards or something) but if they lock us in a room during a cutscene with ads plastered on the walls, they've crossed the line.
- wTheOnew, on 07/11/2008, -4/+66'The first company to sign up for advertising space, interestingly enough, was Microsoft's game division.'
- Venemous, on 07/11/2008, -7/+66Was there any reason to have Sony in the title?, we all already know who makes the damn thing.
- streetpreachr, on 07/11/2008, -3/+52No thanks.
- MorphicMusic, on 07/11/2008, -2/+43I remember ads in Sega CD...
- imacmike, on 07/12/2008, -1/+38So then the games are free now, right?
- DarkKnight209, on 07/12/2008, -0/+35the game prices better drop then damn it
- Seafea, on 07/11/2008, -2/+34I don't mind these, as long as they're unobtrusive, and make sense in the game world, such as the pictured I Am Legend billboard.
Just as long as they don't put ads in the XMB. That'd get annoying, wouldn't it? =P - nmc9, on 07/11/2008, -0/+29I hope this doesn't become the norm. I can see this going from just billboards in games to having flash commercials playing during load screens (or something equally annoying).
- inactive, on 07/11/2008, -0/+29That's true Silent Hill horror for ya.
- WallsOfPeril, on 07/11/2008, -1/+30Boo
- gamben0, on 07/12/2008, -1/+26This has been happening in games for a long time now... Why is everyone acting like this is something new?
- Azriel7, on 07/12/2008, -1/+21OK, lets kill that MYTH here and now. Game prices have NEVER gone down because of ads and NEVER will. This is the BS ad companies use to justify putting ads in games and it is all a lie.
- wTheOnew, on 07/12/2008, -3/+17I didn't think I needed to include the /sarcasm
- RSS14, on 07/12/2008, -1/+15 < Your game will begin after this 30 second advertisement >
- meruru, on 07/11/2008, -0/+13I'm curious how this will be done, will they be preloaded on game discs or will they be dynamically changed via PSN. I guess I'm just holding out hope that I won't see any ads since my PS3 is not connected to the internet.
- robbob, on 07/12/2008, -1/+14...and Sega CD is dead
- shaun1018, on 07/12/2008, -1/+14If ads can be incorporated in the game universe believably I wouldn't mind.
So as long as it is a modern or futuristic game ads could be believable.
However when you start to see Mountain Dew ads in fantasy or past settings you have a problem.
I think that customers should get a discount or free stuff that contains adverts though.
Perhaps two versions could be made Adverts and no Adverts. The former would be at a slight discount $10 or so.
Things like map packs and other add-ons could be completely monetized via advertisers. - mediaphile, on 07/12/2008, -1/+13If you have payed, there should be no ads. Simple as that. They're already making a killing on these games. Ads are fine for a free product, but we can't start letting them turn video games into cable television.
- burchie2, on 07/12/2008, -2/+14video games have had ads for generations. just take a closer look
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+11I have a /strong/ feeling that they will be the same server feeding you other content too.
- Blandyman, on 07/12/2008, -1/+11And if they're not, what happens then? You get a nice big "SERVER NOT FOUND" on that billboard...
Like the Times Square BSOD. - dzw120, on 07/12/2008, -1/+11Why fight it before we know whether or not it's going to be bad? Advertising isn't always bad. MGS4 had some Apple "advertising" that was unobtrusive. GTA IV could have actually been even more immersive if you could see real billboards while going through the city. We just have to wait and see how they're going to do it.
If *unobtrusive* ads help subsidize my games or get more money to developers to make better games, I'm all for it. Now if they're going to plaster ads on loading screens, I'm all for fighting. - IronGoldfish, on 07/12/2008, -0/+10OK if it's billboards, etc.
I'd feel different if it were like the television in Idiocracy however. - CrazedLeper, on 07/12/2008, -2/+11I'll be so pissed if they start using my bandwidth to pipe ads into games I already paid for. Oh, so pissed.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -2/+10360 has in-game ads, as well as in it's main menu system.
- WhereAmI, on 07/12/2008, -2/+10Its not like Sony is the first one to do it. And I don't care really so long as I keep getting that sweet sweet free online play on dedicated servers.
- jermm, on 07/12/2008, -0/+8Battlefield heroes will only have ads in loading screen/web UI, not in-game. Honestly, the ads in Burnout Paradise didn't bother me, but if I see axe body spray in Half-Life EP 3, someone is going down.
- inf0, on 07/12/2008, -1/+9Ads should be used to deliver the content cheaper to the end user. For example, the new Battlefield game for the pc will be free to the user but there will be billboards, etc. inside the game that has/will be sold to advertisers. Also, there is a similar Quake project in the works as well.
The only way I find it acceptable to look at ads in a game, is if the game itself is free. I would not pay a cent of my own money to stare at advertising. - cheeseron, on 07/12/2008, -1/+9they'll put them in but it won't lower the prices
- AzureRise, on 07/12/2008, -0/+8Goddamn it stop that! Stupid teenagers, trying to give me a heart attack...
- 0011002, on 07/12/2008, -0/+7I understand what your trying to say but the thing is those are free for you to read (well most are) and well the games are 40 to 50 bucks a pop or more.
- Incidents, on 07/12/2008, -1/+8I hope I don't get any ads during a real-time weapon change...
- MaxD, on 07/11/2008, -17/+24In game xmb, our own music, ads. is just like an Xbox, w007.
- travisty17, on 07/12/2008, -2/+8"I'm gonna go ahead an say it, that was a joke. I'll be telling them all night."
- Koush, on 07/11/2008, -5/+11I'd love ads in futuristic games.
Coming July 2069!
"*insert something here* - inactive, on 08/11/2008, -1/+7If ads for actual products appeared in GTA billboards, I would shoot myself.
- mediaphile, on 07/12/2008, -1/+7@theaceoffire:
Not during the games, which is the whole point of the article. Though I don't think one should have to view ads in the dashboard if you've payed for XBox Live. - Elranzer, on 07/13/2008, -0/+5There were ads in some PSone games. In Parasite Eve 2, there were ads for Coca-Cola (not that anyone has played that game). They came in the form of non-obtrusive billboards and vending machines, though.
- Shuk, on 07/12/2008, -0/+5Wait let me get this straight! Does this mean games you already own will suddenly have in game ads streamed to the ps3 in games? How is this even possible? Should I be disconnecting my PS3 from the internet when playing GTA4?
Or does this mean they are making a contract with Sony's division of gaming. So that we see ads in SOCOM 4 or whatever Sony develops. Can someone explain? - bagboyrebel, on 07/12/2008, -1/+6@Blandyman,
because game developers are losing so much money on the industry... - Zpanzer, on 07/12/2008, -0/+5@mediaphile, Crackdown had in-game adds
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4So it would be like buying a brand new dvd film, only to find it has advertising throughout like free to air television. How uncouth.
- TexasMd91, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4Wait, so we pay for a PS3, pay for the game.... and then they have advertisements? Shouldn't ads me only in free computer games...
- JudgeMonkey, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4Probably ship with ads on the disk and dynamically update if you're connected. You won't see new ads, but you're not getting away that easily.
- doshindude, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4Aah!
- burnedtubes, on 07/12/2008, -1/+5Amen brutha!
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4No I don't, why the hell would they bump up the price of PS3 games?
- Shaflugi, on 07/12/2008, -1/+5"You are sony's bitch"
