- hater2win, on 10/16/2007, -7/+49Thats all well and good for Korea, but the US will definitely be a different story. I have a feeling that this is one of those things (Rumble Sixaxis) that the US gets much later on. It will be a different story with Microsoft, which will likely launch the US service first. I love my PS3, but I just don't see this coming to the US before MS has theirs out.
DISCLAIMER: I understand the US is not the center of the universe, but in the interest of mass appeal, this story means squat for Digg's largest user base (The US). - inactive, on 10/13/2007, -8/+21Mega TV is already a IPTV network... being that there are no IPTV networks in the USA (and to my knowledge, pretty much anywhere else in the world), Sony will have a hard time expanded on this. Microsoft actually plans to launch a IPTV service, not just act as a set top box.
- StuBeck, on 10/16/2007, -1/+11Since when was Sony a darkhorse? I thought they sold a few of those PS2's last generation.
- control98408, on 10/16/2007, -1/+9South Korea has the bandwidth, we don't
- skydolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The problem with IPTV is bandwidth. The ultimate promise of IPTV has always been Video on Demand. Until we get FTTP rolled out in a significant manner (like in Korea), it is not going to work in a satisfactory manner.
- bluscale, on 10/16/2007, -0/+7Omg, a digger that actually backed up their claim.
- Morphine7399, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Agreed, It's good to see that Sony is also adoping the technology, however, there is no way Sony is going to release this in the US before Mircosoft's fall update for the 360. Which IPTV has been rumored to be released with, hopefully along with herd/clan support.
- bluscale, on 10/16/2007, -2/+8aegis9975's post is a reply and it deserves to stand on its own...
"MS doesn't plan on launching the an IPTV service (just the set top box & software). The service will be offered through AT&T, BT, etc.

"Some of the world’s largest telecommunications service providers have chosen IPTV Edition as their IPTV software solution, with scale commercial deployments currently under way with AT&T in the United States, BT Group PLC in the United Kingdom, Deutsche Telekom in Germany, T-Online in France and Swisscom in Switzerland."" - ricperry1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So you'll be able to watch exactly ZERO IPtv channels from Korea on your PS3.
- arcticblue, on 10/16/2007, -1/+6Yeah, he actually means "limited places". I'm an American with an American Xbox living in Japan and I'm not allowed to download any of the TV shows, movies, or music videos from the US marketplace. I'm also not allowed to download the demo of Bioshock for some reason. I'd go over to the JP marketplace, but, umm... it's kind of empty; there isn't a ***** thing on it. MS has only given me two generic responses (in the first one, they only talked about DVD regions even though I didn't mention anything about that) despite the fact that Major Nelson said on his blog that they will work with customers on a case-by-case basis.
I flashed my firmware last night. - masterm1nd, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5This comment system is horrible, but that was all you.

It's pretty nice and really fast. The framework and programming are all there, it's just a matter of making it available through 360 (not counting Media Extender capabililties).
- bluscale, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5Just realize that the PS3 isn't blowing smoke anymore. The fact that a content provider has backed their system proves they have the infrastructure. It means a lot considering the 360 had been the only player with content. You understand what it is so you should give it props.
On a side note, we already pay 4 dollars a month to play games on LIVE, if they price this thing to compete with Netflix this would be amazing. But if they're competing with cable companies, this thing will lose a lot of steam, fast. - inactive, on 10/16/2007, -1/+5Firmware update
- bluscale, on 10/16/2007, -0/+4Is it 1080i or p? All they say is HD.
- ninjasquirrel, on 10/16/2007, -0/+4Pretty much every province in Canada has at least one IPTV provider... In Saskatchewan the crown-corp telco has a service (Max) that's pretty decent and could easily be adapted to work on the 360 (already works with VLC).
- MrSteamTank, on 10/16/2007, -0/+4IPTV will guaranteed come last to US and Canada due to the ridiculous cable monopolies. The only way around it that I could see would be with severe government intervention. It sucks but thats the way it is here in oligopoly land.
- ricperry1, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Not another AT&T tie-in! NOOOOOOOOOO!
- MonkeyFit, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3You rent movies and purchase episodes. The movies expire, but the TV shows stay on your hard drive until you delete them.
- bluscale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Limited places? Do you mean not all over the world?
- carl25, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9don't US 360 users have the ability to "rent" movies and episodes in HD ?
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3Joost shows nothing in HD.
- RedHerringHack, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Maybe x360 has providers, but the content SUCKS and the selection SUCKS. A real streaming television channel would beat it, hands down. Also, there is the "nickel and diming the hell out of your customers" aspect of Live.
- DanNZN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Heh, yeah and then got dugg down for it.
- supersteve, on 10/16/2007, -1/+3if it's like Sony's other "promised stuff" then there will be nothing to watch until 2 years later.
- sint4x, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2It would be nice to see this happen. I say this because I do not have any TV service in my home. However, I do have a PS3 and a 1080p 40" LCD and would think its cheaper to do this then pay up the ass from my local cable provider. But how many ppl are in my situation?
- FutureGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2XBox IPTV demo
http://on10.net/Blogs/tina/you-heard-it-people-car ... - RedHerringHack, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Ever look at the folding at home map really closely?
- xOpifex, on 10/16/2007, -3/+5IPTV is becoming available throught the world. Even in my town (Columbia, Missouri) Centurytel is already offering IPTV
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Uh FIOS ring any bells?
- Segitz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Around the world? Are you kidding me? Earth is a bit bigger than the US, you know?
Maybe the US has none, I don't know and I don't care, but we sure as hell already have several IPTV services in Germany, some of those are also available nationwide! - voodooVince, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Canada has had IPTV (thanks to Manitoba) for several years now:

I'm not particularly sold on the technology advantages over .torrent but I guess we'll see how it all shakes out. - SimCutie, on 10/16/2007, -1/+3Yes, current model of MegaTV set top box costs about $400.
KT charges rental fee of $5 per month for 1 yr subscription.
For three year subscription, set top rental fee is free.
Current price PS3 price in Korea is about $380,
which is comparable to price of dedicated IPTV set top price.
But PS3 is much more versatile. For example, it can play DVD and HD movie disk.
Did I mentioned that PS3 even can play latest video game too? :) - edicius, on 10/16/2007, -2/+4Isn't the 360 getting iptv in the fall update?
- wilhel1812, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1america? dont even think about norway...
- Dracusis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Per capita, the US is probably fairly low on the list of PS3 supporters, and as Korea has the best internet infrastructure in the world it makes a lot of sense to release it there first. Let them work out any issues on that network then adapt it for the rest of the world.
I'd love to see this in Australia but every ISP down here is still using rather low bandwidth caps on every plan and charging tripple that of most any other countries higher speed unlimited plans. - inactive, on 10/16/2007, -3/+4Only in limited places though. And that's not IPTV
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Really? Because the PS3 is actually doing better in Europe and Asia.
- PrincessDejiko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Verizon? Cavalier? Microsoft is not the only company in the US with IPTV.
- felman87, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Not according to http://www.vgchartz.com/
- cJeremy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hmm, maybe i should be a little excited...? i'm in freakin south korea....
- gerbintosh, on 10/16/2007, -1/+2It's not just all 3 of those. Its also a server and a linux box. Google "Warhawk PS3 servers" Hard to believe that an online game is being managed by interconnecting PS3's.
THe PS3 is supposed to be an all in one entertainment system. Why have 6 boxes cluttering the living room when you can just get one? That's why sony can sell 3 to 5 mil of them even with the lack of games. Make sense? - Error601, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All that's doing is making the PS3 the cable box for KT . What protocol it uses is completely irrelevant.
- evildeadguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And Nintendo beats them both in sales.
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1girl-on-girl machinima action! digg! http://digg.com/playstation_3/Hot_girl_on_girl_mac ...
- dioscaido, on 10/16/2007, -1/+2It seems like a fair trade to me. Sony beats MS to the punch on releasing IPTV functionality. MS beats Sony to the punch on actually releasing some good games.
- Topher06, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1Just a note, but IPTV is not a Microsoft proprietary technology, just that Microsoft has invested heavily in bringing this technology to PC's and eventually the Xbox360. When IPTV is a go in the US, you can be sure that if Sony has a solution, they will implement it regardless of Microsoft's plans. Korea sounds like its going to be Sony's test bed for the concept, the US unfortunately is mired in FCC regulations and anti-innovation whining from Hollywood delaying IPTV for all.
In any case, this is good news as the only reason why I might have bought an Xbox360 asside from Halo3 is its potential as an IPTV platform, now that the PS3 might offer this service, I can save some money and headaches of RROD while watching Heroes. - RedHerringHack, on 10/16/2007, -1/+2Even if no other games come out for the PS3, it does so many other things well that it still would not be "doomed". The web client on Xbox SUCKS. Because it doesn't exist.
