- amrush4th, on 01/08/2008, -3/+51Wow, this makes almost to much sense. I bet some would buy a PSP just as a portable movie player if the selection is large enough.
- Zamfir, on 01/08/2008, -3/+47Smart. Should have done this will DVD too... and/or bundled UMD versions with the BD/DVD.
- triplehelix, on 01/08/2008, -0/+34the point isn't that your supposed to appreciate the movie in high def on your psp, the point is that you get to take a portable copy of a movie you've already paid for.
- Maynza, on 01/08/2008, -1/+26They aren't bringing Blu-Ray to the psp they are putting an MP4 of the movie on the same disc is what I got out of the article.
- inactive, on 01/08/2008, -0/+25No they aren't. They are including a 128-256 meg copy of the movie on the bluray that is copied to the PSPs memory stick
- volacide, on 01/08/2008, -3/+20fartbuttes: the ultimately worthless fanboy stickler that's only cheating himself
- fkr3, on 01/08/2008, -1/+18Well.... Sony movie + Sony authorised PSP version + Sony PSP? See where I'm going with that?
- Sairgem, on 01/08/2008, -1/+17The same movies you already own that look 10x as good. Get an HDTV before you mumble your *****.
- Superman007, on 01/08/2008, -0/+15Totally agree with you. Can't wait for more details on this.
- PunkRampant, on 01/08/2008, -0/+15People have been watching movies on the PSP for a long time now. Sony is just simplifying the process by ripping and encoding for you.
- aegis9975, on 01/08/2008, -1/+15It would be nice if there was a nicely encoded MP4 version of the movie included inside the DVD. Would save me the time from using Handbrake to rip my DVDs. I guess they plan on doing this with Blu-ray. Honestly, surprisingly consumer friendly move by Sony.
Hope they make it iPod compatible (which makes a bit of sense being Apple is a Blu-ray supporter and uses H.264 like the PSP). - shcforward, on 01/08/2008, -0/+14The comments here are such great proof that a decent percentage of diggers either don't read the article whatsoever or they have spoken out against standardized testing only because of their own atrocious scores on the reading comprehension section.
Once again, the PSP is playing its normal movies in its regular format, which would be included in the Blu Ray disc purchases of certain films. - rubenz, on 01/08/2008, -0/+13re-buy again? so you re-bought a psp before?
- inactive, on 01/08/2008, -4/+17It's about time, they promised this would be done by the end of 2007. Just enable Bluray over Remote Play to make up for it.
- Tonytastic, on 01/08/2008, -3/+15this might make me re-buy a psp again...
- fkr3, on 01/08/2008, -1/+12Or just copy the file onto a memory stick....
- NightVortez, on 01/08/2008, -3/+14I hope they extend this to the point of all portable media players working like this with all Blu-Ray players (that are 2.0), truly a killer feature.
- TheXeno, on 01/08/2008, -2/+13Clever Sony, I see what you're doing here.
- AvidPreatorian, on 01/08/2008, -1/+12trolls! damnit where do they keep coming from..
- xTRUMANx, on 01/08/2008, -1/+11under bridges?
- leahcim, on 01/08/2008, -1/+10Same could be said when you bought VHS then DVD. Or Records to 8 Track to Cassettes to CDs to iTunes Store.
Yeah it's going to be a never ending cash cow for these 'content' owners but thats the way it is.
Besides a HD disc isn't 3x the price of a DVD. And its obvious you didn't read the article because the title is misleading. It isn't HD for your PSP, its when you buy a Blu-ray movie it will come with a version you can put on your PSP, any further details are missing. - bigbadgoat, on 01/08/2008, -3/+11the psp has more higher-rated games than the DS.
Both the Wii and the DS are loaded with 90% dog ***** titles, so don't complain about something Sony has actually been doing right. - mnick, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8Daxter, burnout dominator, crush, ratchet and clank size matters, puzzle quest(also on DS), the syphon filter games, wipeout games, lumines,Beatz(PSN download),FF tactics, Disgea,Killzone liberation, MGS portable ops, there's more but those are the ones I could think of off the top of my head.
- AvidPreatorian, on 01/08/2008, -4/+12Sony is doing great things, once PS3 gets more good games (which are coming soon), it's going to get interesting
- JayD16, on 01/08/2008, -4/+12Sounds awesome. Is this only going to be Sony pictures? Would be nice if they implemented a software converter instead of an on disk version that might or might not be put on the disk. That might get them in lawsuit trouble though.
- staticneuron, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8UMD's never went away. And your comment makes no sense because this has nothing to do with umd's.
- xTRUMANx, on 01/08/2008, -1/+8You know what they say, third time's a charm.
- dasdef, on 01/08/2008, -0/+7the psp screen really isnt *that* small.
- staticneuron, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6This doesn't take the DRM away? Not only is this comment ignorant to how the copy protection works on blu ray, your comment still just doesn't make any sense.
- inactive, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6Yeah, the PSP probably has the biggest screen of any non-purpose-built movie player. It's certainly bigger than the iPhone's screen.
- samdu, on 01/09/2008, -1/+7I love toting my 42" LCD with me on vacation and business trips. It's so portable and light.
- tian2992, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5Well, technically the Blu-Ray is encoded on AVC/H.264; Although on HD
- CresseyChaos, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5go bash your head against a wall for being so blindingly stupid!
- Ndiggnation, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5About ~800MB for the PSP formatted version of RE:Extinction...
- iceperson, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5What kind of disc are they putting the MP4 on again?
- krische, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5Buried for not reading. They would copy a compressed movie file onto the PSP, not the actual blu-ray disk.
- IHaveCrayons, on 01/08/2008, -3/+8Wow... "thealliedhacker" you are an idiot. Take your anime faces with you
- staticneuron, on 01/08/2008, -1/+5Shallow games? I think you have the DS and the PSP mixed up there.
- triplehelix, on 01/08/2008, -1/+5i keep reading that it will just be a portable option, not that it will be psp specific. i guess we'll have to wait and see.
- Topher06, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4Could it be that Sony is finally seeing that bringing better choice and features to paying customers outweighs the potential for a customer to rip them off and distribute a file online? Is this a turning point for the music and movie industries?
- dmadzak, on 01/08/2008, -2/+6Is Sony just smart or lucky? All the time they had Microsoft focused on the gaming market and Sony practically won the media market, at least for the time being. Granted Microsoft wanted the media market, but Sony went all in with PS3 + Blu-Ray and it looks like they won the hand and have almost all the chips at the table. Interesting to see if Sony goes ahead and blows their advantage. The shift to downloadable media can't come quickly enough for Microsoft. Microsoft may have won(are winning) the gaming battle for this generation (at least against Sony, outcome still undecided however), but Sony is winning the war (for now).
- staticneuron, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4Dude he was just naming titles off of the top of his head. But it's nice to know that nintendo fans haven't lost some of their passionate love for nintendo's offering. As a game player who has played almost every sytem in existance and more games than my mind care to remember I have to agree with the meta scores of the DS library. The sheer fact you start talking about cooking mama, picross and wario ware as great games just shows the difference between tastes.
I own a PSP and I enjoy it more than the DS because of the games. I bought a wii because I expected more but that was dashed. I am just nostalgic hoping that nintendo will regain their amazing titles that appeal to all (snes) instead of the party game and casual crowd.
If he relly wanted to I am sure that mnick could list an even larger list of games that ar highly rated across that board as well as anticipated titles to come. I mean crisis core alone should sell anybody that is a fan of the FF series. Dissida just makes it sweeter. - samdu, on 01/09/2008, -0/+4Good luck scratching a Blu-Ray disc, too.
- fkr3, on 01/08/2008, -1/+5There was something the other week about another network providing iPod versions on the discs as well.
- samdu, on 01/09/2008, -0/+3Should be better on battery life than UMD (no moving parts) and I'm sure the quality will be fine. It's not like you need 1080p content on the PSP to make it look good.
- Ndiggnation, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3They have. I just bought the DVD version of Resident Evil:Extinction, simply because it offered a digital copy of the movie that was "unlockable" with a code and a net connection. You can put a copy on your PC, or PSP. Got it on my PSP...though it's time to buy a bigger memory stick, as the movie is ~800MB.
- mnick, on 01/08/2008, -1/+4Actually I think the CD's to itunes was a step backwards in sound quality, besides that I agree completely.
- smackhero, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3i thought the video ipod and psp played pretty much the same video formats--MP4 and H.264?
- samdu, on 01/09/2008, -0/+3It's Sony's content. It's legal because they are the ones offering it.
- dscomeau, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3Why are people whining so much whenever Sony announces a cool, non-gaming feature for PS3 / PSP? I find there to be enough good games to keep me very happy....but I guess if I gamed 5+ hours a day I'd run out and be cranky too.
