- roxya, on 12/07/2007, -3/+44What I really want is to be able to read messages and perhaps reply to them without quitting my game. I'm not entirely sure why anyone would be desperate for anything more than the buddy list and associated functions.
- Zal91, on 12/07/2007, -5/+25This wouldn't affect me because I have three PS3s.
. - inactive, on 12/07/2007, -7/+25The webbrowser takes up too much RAM to use in game.
- WhereAmI, on 12/07/2007, -6/+21Well he's kind of right even though I still ask who the hell this site is and why they say I don't need it. He states users don't need full access to the entire XMB /now/, we just need the things like messaging with friends implemented ASAP. The author thinks Sony is going to roll out in-game XMB in one big update rather than give us the key features we want until then. Which seems to be true.
I'm confused on the buddy example. I can see what games my friends are playing and, in Warhawk, I can easily go to the buddy option and join the game my buddy is currently playing. He can make a point on the game being full but what can Sony do about that...the game already supports 32 players... - smacksaw, on 12/07/2007, -4/+19I also don't need my start menu or taskbar while I'm using Firefox...lol?
Who is this guy, anyway? How lame does he think Sony is? We want and need it all, not half of it.
To me, the most disappointing thing after the lack of RAM is that whatever you are doing pretty much takes over the system. I have used OS' I can ALT+TAB in and out of programs in for a hell of a long time. This tool think that's optional functionality?
My suggestion - and I have yet to see anyone say this - is to put more things IN the XMB or system itself. No game should it's own music or sound FX engine. It should play straight through the XMB - that should be the engine. You have games with the Quake engine or Unreal engine or whatever. We need the XMB media engine and then we can choose our own music and tailor the sounds and MAYBE save some RAM...or even better, we might be able to watch streaming video or live TV in a small window.
I have a 47" 1080p screen. I think I can have a little box there somewhere to have some TV going. I want XMB and more. - deepbrown, on 12/07/2007, -2/+16Because you want to let them know. You need to communicate with your friends. Often I want them to leave their game and come and play a better one with me. We should be able to tell them.
- Zamfir, on 12/07/2007, -4/+16All you need is access to your friends list and simple messaging... that's all that would be useful.
- Spamcan, on 12/07/2007, -7/+18I have custom soundtracks for every 360 game I own, that feature alone means I'll always buy the 360 version of a game over the PS3 version unless it happens to have a really kick ass soundtrack. This is why I currently only own 2 PS3 games.
- MogusMaximus, on 12/07/2007, -5/+15Thank-you author for letting me know what I do/do not want. I was so confused before!
*****. - charlescheese, on 12/07/2007, -2/+12That's kind of what he says, and I agree. Though, I think the reason everyone wants XMB is almost entirely related to being able to message and chat with anyone at any time. Next on the list of importance is in game music. I don't EVER see me needing to view pictures or movies while I'm playing a game. I sure hope sony isn't wasting their time and holding back in game chat over those features.
Where I disagree with him is on the in game settings. I wish we DID have access to screen resolution settings as well as a few other settings related to video. Rainbow Six Vegas and its truly messed up 1080i mode is reason enough why this should be implemented. There are other games that don't default to the game's native resolution (which is the best setting for PS3 users) though I think Sony has changed that now and the native resolution seems to be the one the PS3 outputs as long as your tv accepts it. - krische, on 12/07/2007, -9/+19This guy is right. Roll out an update with in game messaging/chat first. Then once that is done, you can work on getting all the XMB in-game. I hope Sony sees this and releases an update soon. I hate having to quit Warhawk to inform friends of which match i'm in.
- jacksons98, on 12/07/2007, -3/+12Sony has been by far the most responsive to gamer criticism this generation. Too add to what mywhitenoise said, we wanted upscaling we got it, we wanted better online community features they started working on Home. In perspective I'm still waiting for Nintendo to come up with a decent online system and lower VC prices. They've done nothing since launch with either.
- Zamfir, on 12/07/2007, -3/+12You don't... in Warhawk they can see where you are and join in from the Community menu.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/07/2007, -4/+12oh come on, they're pretty responsive on their blog, and they know this is the most wanted one, they just can't figure out how to do it.
You wanted upscaling for movies and PS1/2 games? Got it. You wanted custom themes? You got them. you wanted rumble back? you got it. want better games? they came. Price drop? Twice. Divx? Coming.
They're extremely responsive to their audience. - davidmcraney, on 12/07/2007, -3/+11Sorry, but I would like to pause the game, check out the FAQ online, then go back to playing.
- Synthesize, on 12/07/2007, -2/+9We certainly don't need the whole XMB implemented during games and movies. We just want to be able to AT LEAST view friends, view voice/text messages, send messages/invites, and play custom music.
It's stupid to receive a message from a friend and the only way to view it is to exit the game or movie entirely. - aegis9975, on 12/07/2007, -3/+9in-game XMB is not needed, however, a better integration of your messages and friends list is. When I'm playing a game, I'm playing a game, not watching a movie simultaneously (it takes a good 3 seconds to quit the game and access the movie anyway) , but gaming-related pertinent information should be accessible while your playing. I'm assuming its being worked on along with Home, but they should get it out ASAP.
- JayD16, on 12/07/2007, -3/+9I always assumed they were holding back on all of this stuff so that when Home comes it makes a bigger impact.
- supermanred, on 12/07/2007, -2/+8Cross game chat rules on xbox live. Trust me there is a point.
- TheRealToma, on 12/07/2007, -3/+8"Just like you don’t need this burger, Fatty, you don’t need an in-game XMB"
lol - slimthps, on 12/07/2007, -4/+8They've had over a year to do this (and they had it originally implemented before the ps3 was even released). I want to be able to listen to music while playing, check friends and messages, and browse the internet, all while being able to jump right back into my game.

- xTRUMANx, on 12/07/2007, -2/+5Don't feed the troll. Don't look at the troll. Ignore the troll.
- xTRUMANx, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3What makes you think he does?
- estvir, on 12/07/2007, -1/+4It's not about that, obviously, people want to send/read messages and so on -- you know, basic things a magical console like the PS3 should be able to do, I mean, Sony tells us it's oh-so-powerful compared to the 360 and it has the super rad Cell process and whatever their gimmick marketing name for their GPU is.. yet people can't read messages ingame?
The 360 Dash code is under 16MB as opposed to what, over 100MB for the PS3's equivalent? - darkhero, on 12/07/2007, -1/+4This author must not have ADD.
- Balk2K, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3Man, that guy really needs an in-game XMB to calm him down
- MackPrime, on 12/07/2007, -1/+3i have four PS3s.
- nattybohman, on 12/07/2007, -2/+4Umm.. that's right. PS3 fanboys will have to start reliving past glory if they want any glory at all.
- Topher06, on 12/07/2007, -1/+3And this comment has something to do with in-game XMB? Have you even seen that sales of PS3 are up like over 300% this holiday season because of the price cut and excellent games like Uncharted, R&C and COD4.
- smackafiyah, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2[casm]It's always nice when you have companies telling consumes what they don't need[/casm]....its a convience and shouldn't really be that hard to implement on a firmware update....is it?
- Almadiel, on 12/07/2007, -1/+3Finally, some sense. The only feature of the XMB that has any value ingame is the friends menu, and its already possible for game developers to make that accessible (see Mainichi Issho, which also has custom mp3 support, using the PS3 firmware's built in mp3 functions). So the firmware supports that already. There may be some value to having the friends menu accessible from the ingame ps button menu, but it would be better if developers incorporated it into their own menus, which they can do easily. The only difference between PS3 and X360 in this area is that sony doesn't demand that developers use these features, both of them offer it.
- nattybohman, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2300% of a tiny number is still a tiny number. I enjoy Uncharted, but it's not a system seller and neither are the other two. Especially when COD4 is already out on the 360 without the horrible XP glitches of the PS3 version.
- jrbrewin, on 12/07/2007, -1/+3seems to me that the touted features of the firmware update are purely things that have been in xbox1, or xbox360 for between 2 and 6 years. Yes, it's good that sony are learning, but really, some of these basic functions should have been in the ps3 from day one. end of story.
the xbox360 does this the right way. you get the full dashboard when out of a game, but a minimal blade when you're in game where you can check your status, your chat / voice / messenger / friend status, media play back, and downloads. for now that's all you really need.. - Arkz, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2the one this iv wanted since i had my ps3 is the ability to load a playlist from my pc during a game, i love being able to bring up the guide on the 360 and get some music going to make those long races on forza 2 less boring
- nattybohman, on 12/07/2007, -2/+4The only thing I think of as superior on the PS3 is that they give you free themes that are actually cool.
Otherwise the 360 blows it away. The 'few' in-game features that 360 has over the PS3 are huge. Communicating with friends while they play other games should be a basic feature of any next gen console.
The other thing that kills me about the PS3 is that very few people have headsets. What's the point of even wearing a headset when only one of eight other players have one? (IF THAT) - nattybohman, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2You don't NEED anything when it comes to a game system. It's all about what you WANT.
You don't even NEED a PS3. Saying you don't need something is obvious, but that's not what it's about when it comes to an entertainment device. - EnricoFermi, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2I agree with him about most of this although their is one glaring omission. The ability to add friends during a game instead of having to exit a game to so, or wait until later and sift through a list of all of the players you've encountered online while trying to remember the obscure l33t sp34k name of the player you kicked ass with in warhawk two days ago.
- MWeather, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1Not to mention that the PSP has no MMU.
- triplehelix, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1with all ps3's having a HDD, i imagine they could implement some sort of swap file.
personally, i think being able to look up how to get past a certain part of a game thats been kicking your ass all weekend, while in the game, would be pretty nice. - theaceoffire, on 12/07/2007, -1/+2360 should have free multiplayer, from day one.
- triplehelix, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1then hook up a keyboard and mouse...any standard usb one's will do since sony didn't feel the need to have any proprietary connections, unlike other consoles this generation.
- aazn, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1You don't "need" 2 kidneys.
- Akvj1n, on 12/07/2007, -1/+2He has a point, why the hell would I want to listen to my music with games like Uncharted have a fully orchestrated soundtrack? All I want to tell people is "NO, I don't want to play Tekken right now", without quitting my current game.
- jrbrewin, on 12/07/2007, -1/+2nonsense. most console games are specifically optimised for an exact hardware and resource configuration. just throwing away even 8 mb out of the ps3's non-unified memory isn't going to be as easy task as you suggest.
this is why sony really need to think before a little more about the impact of their design decisions early on. - nattybohman, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1It IS funny, but when is a game system's worth ever about what you "need". This is an entertainment device, not something that keeps you warm, clothed or fed. It's about what people "want" and obviously a lot of people WANT the XMB in game.
- Sethbacca, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1Haven't Sony been working on getting the memory footprint of the OS down anyway? It would seem to me that they have room to implement new features as the original OS requirements have gone down. All games have to be based on the original set of requirements anyway I would assume even though the memory footprint may have shrunk.
Who knows. - nattybohman, on 12/07/2007, -2/+3They don't. If their implementation would be anything like Sony's, I'm perfectly satisfied if it isn't there. Browsing with the PS3 or PSP is like using my telephone keypad to surf the web.
- jrbrewin, on 12/11/2007, -0/+1the inclusion of a bluray / hd-dvd drive, or lack-thereof is a moot point for anyone that uses the (only) hd movie download service.
- sint4x, on 12/07/2007, -1/+2Or I'll use a bluetooth keyboard and browse the web like on a PC, you knob.
