- EddieStarr, on 07/04/2008, -3/+94I doubt Sony will want to spend millions (billions?) trying to design a nextgen console when they are barely able to make profit from the PS3 after I thik more like 2012 (watch)
- 4LeggedtriPod, on 07/05/2008, -2/+60Still waiting on the PS9 I was promised.
- Sludgehammer, on 07/05/2008, -11/+68I'm pretty sure that the "10 year lifespan" line was from Sony when they were trying to justify the $600 price tag of the PS3.
- chaosblade77, on 07/04/2008, -4/+53Was I the only one who noticed that article was from 2006?
Anyway, it's definitely possible. Based on what I've read, both Microsoft and Sony don't plan on pushing the technological envelope with their next consoles, and will treat them more like the Wii. Improved hardware as usual, but it won't be the massive, exponential jump like we saw this generation, and the addition of motion controls (beyond what SIXAXIS offered).
Microsoft has also stated that the idea of home consoles will likely die off before we know it, one reason being because of the cost of continuously adding more powerful hardware. Also evidence that they won't push technology and prices like they did this generation.
Where I'm getting with that is that they won't have to wait as long for extremely powerful hardware that offers the huge improvements like we saw between the PS2/PS3 and Xbox/360. They will instead settle for a much smaller jump, meaning affordable hardware will be available much sooner, especially since neither company is worried about initial hardware profits. - sanwedgy, on 07/04/2008, -9/+51I would not be suprised if they tried to get the PS4 out at the same time as the next Xbox. I dont think they will want MS to get another year lead on them.
- juggalofr33k, on 07/05/2008, -2/+39from gamepro.com? Posted by Tenacious Moses 12/05/2006 @3:13:03 PM PST? i thought i read that a few years back. Still no word on a PS4.
- Zamfir, on 07/04/2008, -8/+44I would not be surprised if they launched the PS4 when the hardware is ready and properly tested. I don't think they care if MS wants to rush out another defective console.
- nreynolds, on 07/05/2008, -3/+36actually the "10 year lifespan" thing comes from the fact that PS1 had games being made for it for about 8 years and PS2 is looking to go even longer. They never once said that they wouldn't introduce a console before 10 years, they were just saying how they wouldn't abandon PS3 for at least 10 years.
- cavie2002, on 07/05/2008, -1/+32article from 12/05/2006 buried
- kaniz, on 07/04/2008, -3/+33Didn't I read somewhere that the current life-expectancy of current-gen consoles to be around 10yrs before we could expect the next round of next-gen?
- Traiklin, on 07/05/2008, -3/+29the 10 year lifespan just means they will support & make the system for 10 years (just like they did with the PS1 & PS2) it doesn't mean we won't see another new system before the 10 years is up.
- Owwmykneecap, on 07/05/2008, -3/+27old article is old
- supermanly, on 07/04/2008, -3/+26It'll be like the PS2: still supported after next gen console's release. My guess is 2012-2014 for release. The PS3 will still get some love as long as the PS4 doesn't kick an incomparable amount of ass.
- sufjanstevens, on 07/04/2008, -6/+29yea, its gonna be 2012
- Whackly, on 07/05/2008, -1/+22Sensationalist title. Answer = no.
- RemarkableRyan, on 07/05/2008, -0/+21And when the PS4 comes out, the PS2 will STILL be around. You just can't kill that thing...
- RemarkableRyan, on 07/05/2008, -1/+22The commercial was Epic!
- EZ2ENVY, on 07/05/2008, -2/+19wrong.............. DECEMBER 21, 2012
- Khast, on 07/05/2008, -4/+19Sony releases next gen system Oct, 12 2012 = end of world?
- Daniel591992, on 07/05/2008, -2/+16You just need to replace them more
- HappyScrappy, on 07/05/2008, -0/+11The lifespans of the devices overlap. Just like PS2 is still here even though PS3 is out, and PSOne was out while PS2 was out.
The 10 year thing isn't dead yet, but we won't know if it'll really last that long for quite some time, will we? - ZenMojo, on 07/05/2008, -1/+11I have 4 PS2's and a PS1....
- xadamxwaltonx, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1012-12-12... has a ring to it...
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -4/+132 year old article, buried as lame. I hope someone agrees with me.
- dsmx, on 07/05/2008, -1/+10Well I here the xbox 720 comes with it's own hydroelectric powerplant to serve as both cooling and power supply.
- MrFisty, on 07/05/2008, -6/+14But they should keep in mind what happened to the 360s reliability at the hands of rushing it out to be first to market instead of more time to iron out the kinks.
- kansai22, on 07/05/2008, -1/+9When Sony said 10 years they mean they will support the system for 10 years just like they are doing with the PS2. Notice Microsoft isnt doing that they stopped production and game development on the Xbox as soon as 360 came out.
- ZenMojo, on 07/05/2008, -3/+11Some PS2 releases this month:
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith Action 06/29/2008
Alone In the Dark Action 06/24/2008
Code Lyoko: Quest for Infinity Action 06/24/2008
WALL.E Action 06/24/2008
Garfield: Lasagna World Tour Action 06/20/2008
Backyard Baseball 2009 Sports 06/10/2008
Jeep Thrills Sports 06/09/2008
LEGO Indiana Jones: The Videogame Adventure 06/06/2008
The Incredible Hulk Action 06/05/2008
That's already an 8-year life expectancy for the PS2. That's almost three years longer than the Xbox and two years longer than the Gamecube.
If you can say one thing, it's that Sony supports their systems until the wheels fall off. - Jenadae, on 07/05/2008, -6/+13Waffles...
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -2/+9Right because the Xbox has been such a breadwinner for Microsoft. The repair/replacement costs alone have to be greater than or equal to any profit they could have made.
MS's entertainment division is a loss leader for the company and continues to be. - DillonHinson, on 07/05/2008, -1/+8Off topic, but I wonder how people will act on this day, the day the world is thought to end? I mean, just imagine waking up on December 21, 2012 and wondering if the there will still be a planet Earth in the nezt few hours?
- dsmx, on 07/05/2008, -1/+8Sony support their consoles even after they launch the next one unlike both microsoft and nintendo.
- lennybird, on 07/05/2008, -3/+9Debatable between scientists: 21st - 23rd.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -3/+9Sony bashing is so 2006.
- thecheatah, on 07/05/2008, -2/+8nreynolds - "actually the "10 year lifespan" thing comes from the fact that PS1 had games being made for it for about 8 years and PS2 is looking to go even longer. - inactive, on 07/05/2008, -2/+7I'm still waiting for the turbografx 512
- ZenMojo, on 07/05/2008, -1/+6PS1 - 1995. PS2 - 2001. PS3 - 2007. So 2012-2014 is about right and nothing new as generations last 4-6 years for both console systems and PC video cards.
- scrag10, on 07/05/2008, -1/+6I wouldn't be surprised if the pushed it to 2013 and stopped selling PS3s in 2016.
- mohsenxp, on 07/05/2008, -2/+7This ***** aint groundhog day. 2yr old articles don't make front page!
- mrgreen4242, on 07/05/2008, -3/+8How do you figure the PS3 will sell 6 million more systems than the 360 in six months? They've only managed to sell 13 million in the 18 months it's been on the shelves. Note, they have to sell six million MORE than the 360, not six million total. So, they likely need to move 8+ million units in 6 months, or 1.3 million systems per month, compared to the 750k per month they've been doing so far.
That seems extremely unlikely. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Console_wars#Worldwid ... - kansai22, on 07/05/2008, -6/+11They will be in 2nd place by January.
- HolyChimp, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4Longer than normal for MS would be four years, so lets hope they do!
- HolyChimp, on 07/05/2008, -1/+5This was a valid argument when it was only 1 or 2 games, but 10 games is a decent amount. My rule of thumb is that if I can spend the amount I spent on the console on quality games then it's a good time to buy.
- MechaFalcon, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4That's... a really bad idea. Where'd you hear that?
- ggoyal, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3That is the first thing I noticed. I was not surprised since these rumours were quite thick at the launch of PS3.
Considering everything that has happened since (such as slower than expected sales of PS3) , we can safely assume that PS4 is not going to happen anytime soon. Already many of the wild conjectures in the article have been proven wrong (such as Sony exiting console business altogether) - mrm3x1can, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4sooner then we think....hmmm. Article written in 2006, not here yet. what happened gamepro?
- chaosblade77, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3I guess they technically could have... but they would have had to manufacture their own chipsets since Nvidia stopped. Getting the facilities ready for something like that and the actual production would have been a huge loss for Microsoft, and obviously it's not worth a huge loss just to keep a last-generation console on the market longer.
- inactive, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4I dont want a Playstation 4. Just give me more love to my PS3 for the next couple of years.
- Jhiaxuz, on 07/05/2008, -3/+6Microsoft can do it with Vista. They are merely taking notes.
