- bhattsan, on 12/17/2007, -6/+77There are copyrighted divx files...?
- mrn111, on 12/17/2007, -10/+63And another WTF is no Xvid support (from Gizmodo). Very disappointing.
- flammenwurfer, on 12/17/2007, -9/+51That's your opinion. I, however, love the PS3's GUI and hate Xbox 360s.
Also why would anyone be upset because something they bought became more useful? - darthbator, on 12/17/2007, -8/+39WTF no xvid support. It's open, there's absolutely no reason to unclude the license standard and not the open one OMFG Sony [face_shame]
- piper999, on 12/17/2007, -6/+37The UI is brilliant for use as a media center. Nice and simple and fast.
- magicaltrevor, on 12/17/2007, -4/+32You don't play games much, do you?
- mywhitenoise, on 12/17/2007, -4/+28I called you a few months ago, but no one answered.
- chris4404, on 12/17/2007, -3/+26Don't feed the troll.
- cash0utcurse, on 12/17/2007, -12/+35FTA: There are also a couple of stipulations with regards to DivX - namely, that copyright protected files, v3.11 encoded videos and files larger than 2GB cannot be played.
WTF? So does this mean it won't play my old dvdrips? Guess I'll have to keep transcoding with tversity... - piper999, on 12/17/2007, -1/+23I think it must be referring to DRM'd WMV files since DRM'd WMA files won't play.
- Speyburn, on 12/17/2007, -8/+29Please just stop doing that to yourself.
- BattleScars, on 12/17/2007, -5/+25HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH ***** HILARIOUS! YOU'RE A COMIC GENIUS!
- jordn, on 12/17/2007, -28/+46DivX support?
woot! take that microsoft!
oh, wait. - aegis9975, on 12/17/2007, -1/+192GB is the size limit for AVI 1.0 containers, Xvid is supported via Divx decoder, and the Xbox 360 also doesn't support any Divx file before Divx 5.0.

#16:
"Why don’t some of my older versions of DivX® files play?
Since we only support Mpeg-4 compatible codec implementations, we will not be able to play video files older than DivX® 5.0." - mywhitenoise, on 12/17/2007, -5/+23Well if you didn't like the PS2, you probably wont ever like the PS3.
You like the Wii over PS2, seriously? - gotamd, on 12/17/2007, -4/+21That's good news, but it's too bad they chose to put artificial limitations in place (the 2GB filesize limit and the 3.11 codec issue). Does the XBox 360 have these same problems (sorry, I've only got a Wii...)?
- TurdFurguson, on 12/17/2007, -2/+19MKV support is what I am asking for also. :(
- pxa270, on 12/17/2007, -1/+18All DivX players can play the majority of Xvid encoded files, as they're both implementations of the MPEG-4 ASP standard. It is possible to encode Xvid movies with advanced settings that DivX certified players don't support, but most of your downloads will play fine (since they usually target settop boxes and DivX DVD players), and your own encodes can of course be set to the DivX compatible profiles. See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xvid#Playing_Xvid_enc ...
In summary, if the PS3 plays DivX it also plays most Xvid (unless they did something really stupid like explicitly checking and rejecting the Xvid FourCC) - jacksons98, on 12/17/2007, -14/+31Happy to see Sony embracing other formats. I like to see the X360 fanboys trying so hard to spin this, but this is nothing but good for me as a PS3 owner.
- mooninite, on 12/17/2007, -3/+19Xvid still uses patented MPEG-4 software algorithms... It's not free to distribute in binary form, which is why xvid.org doesn't have it for download and you have to find some kind person who has compiled it for you.
Use Ogg Theora video with a Ogg or Matroska container. They are all free, open, and not hindered by patents.
Patent hindered:
MPEG-1
MPEG-1 layer 3
MPEG-2
MPEG-4
DivX (MPEG-4)
Xvid (MPEG-4)
WMV (a.k.a. VC-1, derivative of MPEG-4)
MPEG-4 part 10 (h.264)
Stop using patent codecs maybe? - JamesMorris, on 12/17/2007, -4/+20Profile 1.1 is all I care about!
Thanks Sony! - FuzzyC, on 12/17/2007, -10/+26The Xbox 360 has DivX / XviD support via network streaming, disc drive, and USB devices. What was your point again?
- chris9902, on 12/17/2007, -4/+19It's to stop people playing pirated HD content. A 720p TV show is about 1.2gb. I guess a film would be closer to 3gb.
- kansai22, on 12/17/2007, -4/+19I guess truespector is on vacation.
- inactive, on 12/17/2007, -4/+19Heavenly Sword and Uncharted are two that i own and have given me countless hours of play. Notice i said a handful, not a library. Since when is PC gaming dead?
- bahamutxd, on 12/17/2007, -1/+15Actually, not directly. Because it is the VC-1 implementation, it goes to the MPEG LA - of which Sony is also a member.
- duke_nate, on 12/17/2007, -11/+25Yeah, there is a great new feature on digg, its called a reply button. Welcome to 2007.
- Spankov, on 12/17/2007, -3/+17Why? Are you retarded?...Oh I saw your other post. It seems you are.
- xOpifex, on 12/17/2007, -6/+19me.
- BearinG, on 12/17/2007, -3/+16I'm sure you get 700mb quality also.
- ahhell, on 12/17/2007, -8/+20That's pretty weak. What's the point of even offering support then?
- logicalnoise, on 12/17/2007, -1/+13do you know where you are?
- tapo, on 12/17/2007, -5/+17Sony removed that restriction from the PSP firmware a few versions ago.
- tehforumkat, on 12/17/2007, -6/+18they should change the name to the PornStation 3 now.
- Ollin, on 12/17/2007, -10/+21Hell ***** yes.
- smackhero, on 12/17/2007, -1/+12yea, the XMB interface has won awards for its elegant and functional design. it's one thing that Sony has gotten right and i think are smart for implementing in their entertainment devices (PSP, PS3, high-end WEGA TVs, and possibly new Sony-Ericsson mobile phones). although the mp3 player could use a more robust feature set (playlist support, better track management), it's a beautiful and very intuitive interface.
- WhereAmI, on 12/17/2007, -4/+14He must mean the PSN store. Anyone that calls that says the XMB sucks is an idiot. Its incredibly fast. I can also use custom skins for it now.
However I see what you mean by the PSN store. It doesn't suck that much, but it does look like crap. The PC PSN store looks fine, so I'd assume they are going to change it soon to look more like the PC. Before you go and say just like Sony or whatever the damn thing is still usable, I can find anything I want in it, the solid colors and categories can sometimes suck.
As for games, Wiinii, I'm busy playing Unreal Tournament III, Warhawk for online, Uncharted for storyline and Call Of Duty 4 - A timed exclusive, two exclusives, and a cross platform game. - inactive, on 12/17/2007, -8/+17Well between my PS3 and my PC i can play anything you can on your 360. On the PS3, i have a handful of great exclusives that you'll never enjoy on your 360 or pc. I'd say that you definently dont have the best of all worlds.
- Counterhut, on 12/17/2007, -5/+14me too.
- stereoa, on 12/17/2007, -4/+13as do i
- inactive, on 12/17/2007, -4/+13Its his personal opinion that the PS3 is the best console on the market. Its also my opinion, but i am certainly not a sony spy. I am kind of pissed off about the protected access to divx and no xvid.
- GlueSniffer, on 12/18/2007, -1/+10Hey, the update just came out, and I installed it. ALL MY XVID FILES PLAY! I don't have any that are over 2gig, so I don't know about that...I'm backing up a disk to 3gig right now to try it out!!
- inactive, on 12/17/2007, -8/+17Umm, yeah thats what patching is for. Microsoft does it too. The only difference is that sony is doing it more often than microsoft is. Also, Sony said they were giving support, THEN Microsoft turned around and decided that it was time to add it in. If it wasnt for Sony, you wouldent even have divx or xvid on your 360.
Also Topher, 360 also supports that. - ChronotriggerJM, on 12/17/2007, -1/+10Or people that enjoy a reliable console that plays HD movies from the get-go?
- zengonzo, on 12/17/2007, -1/+10Discourage, anyways.
Pain in the ass, I know, but can you set up a playlist that would load consecutive parts of a split movie? - Snakedal337, on 12/17/2007, -0/+9Axxo rips are only 700 mb, I don't see how this is stopping anything.
- bahamutxd, on 12/17/2007, -3/+12but his clones are out in force.
- voyvf, on 12/17/2007, -0/+8Gaming for two decades does not an old fart make.
Er, and get off my lawn! - 000dom000, on 12/17/2007, -0/+8a 720p tv show as avc is 1.2gb. divx would be smaller, id just split it into 2 anyway
- 000dom000, on 12/17/2007, -3/+11he said "oh wait" geez
