- Foxhound1979, on 11/23/2007, -56/+215Are we playstation 3 owners even suppose to be suprised by this news. The guy himself Gabe Newell hates the PS3 so much that he handed the development of the game to EA which can't even run Madden 08 @ 60fps. Why not make the attempt to make a good game rather than half assing it?? Your already putting in time and money towards its development why not make the most of it and get back the money you put into the game? Yeah I can see that theres more money to be made on the 360 and PC due to its large install base but the PS3 is selling and will continue to sell. Valve is shooting itself in the foot my totally slapping a certain demographic in the face by making a ***** port on one console and a better version on 2 other platforms. Is valve this arrogant that they are basically saying that we don't need PS3 owners money.
I know that quite a bit of developers/programmers has gone on record to say that its harder to code on the PS3 than it is for the 360 which is understandable as its is the first time around for a lot of studios to work with the PS3's hardware. But look at Infinity Ward. They have made a good if not better version of COD 4 for the PS3. Also developers like Naughty Dogg and Ninja Theory has shown what the PS3 is capable of and were just in the first generation phase of PS3 games. So when the going gets tough for Valve they hand it off to another developer. What a statement to make for your company. - NightVortez, on 11/23/2007, -8/+104I'm still waiting for an explanation for them to why it's only using one processing core, I'd rather have this game in 2008 then have it run like *****.
- JEAH, on 11/23/2007, -59/+146Oh how I love to hear the fanboys tell Gabe "how it is" /sarcasm
Do you really expect independent developers to make games on a system that's twice as complicated yet has half the install base? Are you people really this stupid?? You obviously have no concept of how games are developed or the principles of business. Sony ***** up with the PS3, plain and simple. For you people that have have some higher calling to publicly defend them, why don't you do us all a favor and shut the ***** up and simply admit that Sony just needs to course correct if they intend on releasing the PS4. - scabbers, on 11/23/2007, -4/+58I'd be pissed if my "super next gen console" dipped to 30fps at the LOWEST.
- DreamVsPs2, on 11/23/2007, -10/+61This is just lazy development. HL2 is like a 5 year old and and it can't run on a next gen system at 60FPS? C'mon now. Look at COD4, looks much better then HL2 and guess what? It's at 60FPS.
- MRintheKeys, on 11/23/2007, -1/+50Just my opinion, but I believe the difference between CoD4 and Orange Box is that CoD4 was designed, from the very beginning, to run on these next-gen consoles. Half-life is being ported over which means there's already some coding that has been done, they are not building it from scratch. Encapsulation can be as much of a hindrance as it can be a benefit. Instead of re-inventing the wheel, you are trying to take this wheel and make it fit on a different car.
- Warlon, on 11/23/2007, -10/+56Odd cuz i own it for 360, and it has major frame rate issues too.... well atleast on tf2, and the game looks like complete arse compared to the pc copy i own.
- ZenMojo, on 11/23/2007, -9/+52"PS3 development was easy, says COD4 developer"
It's been a common excuse for underwhelming early PS3 releases, but according to Infinity Ward, the developer of the Call of Duty series, developing the game on the PlayStation 3 was easy.
Many a developer has moaned at the complexity of the code behind sony's next-gen console, but there were no problems for Infinity Ward as they worked on the newly released Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
They put their success down to the fact that they do not dedicated more energy to one platform - and in fact spread out resources and split up teams to work on the game across the different platforms.
Prioritising one console over the other has resulted in many games being released earlier on one console, and later on another - with the PS3 release of certain games often coming after the Xbox 360 release.
The developer stated, “There’s obviously some problem with all the delays we’re witnessing. I think it’s just down to allocation of resources. I think maybe people feel that they’re resource strapped and feel a little bit more comfortable working on the Xbox 360 as it’s been out a little longer [than the PS3].”
“We haven’t had any problems [with PS3] and that’s probably because of our development philosophy. We develop content-agnostic so we don’t have a lead platform. We have a team working on each of the different versions and everyone else forms a team who makes the content platform agnostic.”

- charlescheese, on 11/23/2007, -18/+56Yep, I think Valve is shooting themselves in the foot big time if they release this game with these issues. I was very much looking forward to buying this game, but I will not buy it if it has a terrible frame rate etc.
The only thing we should keep in mind is that 1up was NOT playing the final version of the game, and as well all know, most of the optimization with frame rate etc happens at the very end of production. - charlescheese, on 11/23/2007, -8/+45You don't respect people because of their video game preferences? That may be the most pathetic thing I've read all week.
- AntBing, on 11/23/2007, -5/+41Get it for the PC instead.
- primordialmeme, on 11/23/2007, -4/+37EA suffers from a lack of talent and credibility.
- lacronicus, on 11/23/2007, -3/+35If he didn't care enough to make the game himself, with his own dev team, he probably doesnt care whether you buy it or not.
- SHiZZAM, on 11/23/2007, -12/+43"Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There's nothing there that you're going to apply to anything else. You're not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they've created",
-Gabe Newell - PunishedOne, on 11/23/2007, -9/+36Uncharted better graphics than Crysis? Are you ***** smoking?
- djetaine, on 11/23/2007, -12/+37TBH, I have a 360 and I have seen some big framerate issues with the orange box myself. I noticed it most in portal which i thought was strange. No, its not my console either.
- Scienceisfun, on 11/23/2007, -4/+28No one in their right mind should think the PS3 is going to go the way of the Dreamcast -- that simply won't happen. What it is in danger of is going the way of consoles like the N64 or the XBox. Both of them were technologically superior to their competition, both had some great games (Mario 64, Ocarina, Goldeneye, Halo, Knights of the Old Republic), but they just never fully caught on. To be fair, in both cases it was the Playstation brand that ran away with the title, but it's clear that something is missing this time around. I can't imagine the PS3 dropping off the face of the Earth, not with FFXIII and Metal Gear on their way, but a pair of great games won't guarantee a turnaround. Who knows though? I don't care, there's way too many good games for me to play these days on one system or another.
- YojimboJango, on 11/23/2007, -0/+22Most games that are in beta aren't perfect. Most games released by EA are crap. Combine these two elements together and you get a really crappy beta. Doesn't mean that it's going to suck when it's released.
- jellygraph, on 11/23/2007, -4/+25Foxhound:
Don't be retarded. Valve didn't give TOB to EA because Gabe hates the PS3. It's the norm for PC developers to do that. Happens all the time. Reason being is that Valve develops for the PC platform. It is cost effective for them to give it to a company that already has experience in developing for the PS3 platform. Now, whether or not EA ***** it up has nothing to do with Valve. Now, since the XBOX 360 is so familiar to develop for, for them its easy enough, instead of working on an entirely different platform.
Who developed Half-life for the PS2? Gearbox Software (you know, those who also ported Halo to the PC). Not Valve. - hockeysmurf, on 11/23/2007, -9/+28Hi Gabe, if you're reading this, I forgot to feed your cat yesterday.
- childprey, on 11/23/2007, -2/+21The source engine takes advantage of multicore on pc.
- charlescheese, on 11/23/2007, -28/+46Those of us with our whole brain still intact believe the PS3 is going to be here for a long time. Next year at this time things will be very different. Oh and the only thing I've seen on the PC that beats out Uncharted on the PS3 is Crysis, and Uncharted only uses 30% of the PS3's power. The developer who made Crysis has given tons of praise to the PS3 as well for all the power under the hood. Good thing he is functioning on a whole brain.
And I don't need to spend $4000 to play one game that looks better on PC. - incredibilistic, on 11/23/2007, -3/+21Really. Especially when you consider that Infinity Ward was able to get Call of Duty 4 to run at 60fps with full-screen anti-aliasing. I'm still really interested in The Orange Box if for no other reason than the value of having all those games in one package. I'm itching to play Team Fortress 2.
The good news is that, thankfully, there are other much better games to be had on the PS3. I just picked up Uncharted and my jaw has dropped at least a dozen times and I'm probably no more than 20% into it. - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+20EA did it
- Jofaba, on 11/23/2007, -0/+17I can understand the mentality of a pc gamer because that's how I started. I've still got the second videocard and watercooling kit in my closet, but I got sick of looking forward to patches and new drivers as if they themselves were game releases. I got sick of the online games like BF2 being completely changed every other patch. I got sick of having to reinstall all my games every time I did my "every six months" Windows reinstall. I got sick of constantly having to upgrade my computer with every new title that comes out.
I switched to consoles because, while they may not be as powerful, they do what they do and they normally do it pretty damn well. I can buy a game and focus on the game, not "what can I do to fix that small framerate issue". Not "maybe I need to defrag" or "maybe I have a virus!". Instead, now I get the game and can tell in the first five minutes what the graphics, sound and gameplay is going to be like, then just enjoy it. I enjoy gaming much more now, and am constantly amazed by the graphics on my HDTV (I don't even want to know what my framerates would be like playing COD4 maxed out on a big high res monitor).
The 360 costs as much as a high range video card. The PS3 costs as much as a newly released beast of a card. Guess what they have in common? Those high end cards are the beasts from a couple months back and now have proper driver support. The cutting edge beasts don't score that well till a couple months down the line once the drivers catch up in quality. Weird how similar that scenario plays out huh?
I'd rather lounge on my couch with a controller playing on a big screen tv and enjoying the game and graphics than leaning stationary on my desk just because the mouse and keyboard are (undoubtedly) more accurate in fps. You get used to controllers pretty quickly.
And lastly, this is what really stands out about consoles, specifically in multiplayer: My graphic settings are YOUR graphic settings. If I'm in the grass, I can be absolutely sure that I'm hidden. If I run into smoke, I know you won't see me. If I'm camo'd against a building in the shadows, I know you can't see me. It's called an even playing field and that adds so much more realism than anything possible on a pc. - tapo, on 11/23/2007, -1/+18The stuttering on the PLAYSTATION 3 release is because the engine is having some serious trouble getting things rendered in time. The stuttering on the Xbox version of TF2 is because of network latency (lag), caused by the fact that Xbox Live has no dedicated servers - which the TF2 code was written for.
- akilleen, on 11/23/2007, -3/+20All Fanboyism aside, I just think that if they can't create a decent port for the PS3 (or any system for that matter), they just shouldn't release it. No use tarnishing your good name with a crappy product.
- bigbadgoat, on 11/23/2007, -6/+22Gabe has done what you call a self-fulfilling prophecy.
- Says the PS3 is impossible to program for, and the lower install base means it wont sell well.
- Hates it so much, he gives it to a bunch of generally incompetent PS3 programmers, and they produce a terrible running game.
- Because it was so terribly made, it sells poorly because no one likes paying money for garbage.
- Gabe gets to say "I told you so" - CaviMike, on 11/23/2007, -0/+14"Get used to still images like these. The framerate often grinds to a halt during the vehicular portions of the Half-Life games."
Ouch. - mufasa, on 11/23/2007, -2/+16Why am i retarded because i got it fot the 360 ? I don't have a pc i can play it on, and i think it works just fine with a controller.
- h4mx0r, on 11/23/2007, -3/+16Don't forget Call of Duty 4 on the PS3. Also flawless frame rates.
- jellygraph, on 11/23/2007, -10/+23This is the reason teenagers shouldn't be allowed to use the internet without an adult around.
"...and Uncharted only uses 30% of the PS3's power."
No way! And how many mana points does it use as well? You know... now that we are making up arbitrary percentages.
"My fingers only use 70% of the power of my PlayStation controller."
"No way dude!"
"Yes way, and I'm thinking of practicing so I can use another 5% of power"
"Dude, thats awesome... haha"
I don't want to hear another word from you until your mommy is sitting beside you, k? - MasterPlayer, on 11/23/2007, -2/+15You can hook up a keyboard/mouse to the PS3, so those that don't have a high end gaming PC, but do have a PS3, can get the full Orange Box experience on the PS3.
- timf, on 11/23/2007, -1/+13I have the same issues on my PC. I think the technical term is "GeForce 6200" :(
- childprey, on 11/23/2007, -1/+13Lacronius... you.. .do realize that physics interaction is the biggest fundamental gameplay element in portal right?
- renatoc8, on 11/23/2007, -2/+14Yeah but according to other devs, the way you do multicore on the PS3 is different then on the PC. On the PC all cores are equal, not on the PS3.
- joltjake, on 11/23/2007, -1/+13That's funny, because the games in the orange box aren't even that demanding.
- ferrariman60, on 11/23/2007, -3/+14It's lazy porting. The source engine is one of the most impressively efficient game engines on the PC, and it can be made very pretty on even a mid range system. And also, it's a modular engine- Episode 2 looks leaps and bounds better than HL2, based on the same foundation: the source engine. I'd disagree with the COD4 comment, and since I own both on PC, where they look their best, Episode 2 looks much better. The HDR, for example, isn't ridiculous.... and the facial detail is incredible. Is COD4 also and efficient engine? Absolutely. The game is awesome. But it's not prettier than this latest revision of the Source engine. And EA is to be blamed for the bad port that doesn't perform well. And Tridentboy is right, COD4 doesn't run at 60 FPS in 1080p- the GPU in the PS3 just can't handle that. Not making a fanboy claim here- just fact. I used to have the 7900GT (same GPU as in PS3) in my desktop, it could run at mostly playable framerates at 1280x1024, with medium detail. My new 8800GT can run it maxed no problem, but the 7900 simply can't.
- Tserk, on 11/23/2007, -2/+13I own a ps3 and a 360, so I can get a version that performs how I want it to, but I'm still kinda disappointed by this.
- roxya, on 11/23/2007, -12/+23What, you really think the source engine cannot be made to run smoothly on the PS3?
It's a lazy port and anyone who pays them for this crap is completely crazy. - ferrariman60, on 11/23/2007, -1/+12EA doesn't have a good name any more because of too many crappy products.
- dn11, on 11/23/2007, -2/+12The 360 version is supposed to be pretty good though.
- jellygraph, on 11/23/2007, -0/+10Not even the Dreamcast went the way of the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was released in 1998. Production of them stopped in 2001 but the last Sega game release was in 2004. The Dreamcast did rather decently, but just not good enough for Sega to see any hope of competing and the market had become too crowded.
The PS2 won because of its price, the fact that it had a DVD player, Sony's successful marketing, the success of the PS and the appearance of having the best support from the game developers.
The PS3 isn't going to suddenly shrivel up and die. It's just not going to do all that great until Sony can significantly drop the price of the PS3 and lure more developers in. But I'm not sure they are going to be able to win on that alone, because the Wii stole the show on being innovative and fun and the XBOX 360 is cheaper, has more games / developer support and doesn't look significantly underpowered. So, Sony has basically been cornered out of the market and there isn't anything much Sony can do about that until the PS4. - Vapor17, on 11/23/2007, -0/+10While i agree with your comment, i think the main problem is that Source was created for the PC, whereas COD4 was created to run on all platforms. Obviously an engine that was originally intended to run on all platforms will run better than an engine designed for PC's.
I should also add that i don't know a whole bunch about computers, and i've gathered most of my info from this comment board, but i still think my argument holds water. - FoxOrian, on 11/23/2007, -5/+14The Half-Life engine and the games themselves aren't really that advanced in any specific ways. If the DX8.1 computer I owned four years ago could kick ass in Half-Life 2, there's no reason the Xbox 360 or PS3 shouldn't be able to completely blow-away how I was paying it almost four years ago. I own the 360 version of The Orange Box and have the PC version of each each from a friends Steam account, and the fact that both the 360 and PS3 versions are underperforming [compared to other, more proficient games on the market for these systems,] really shows Valve's slacking toward console gaming in general. They either are slacking, or simply do not have the talent in their studio.
- Dropperbr, on 11/23/2007, -1/+10I don't think is hardware fault on this one..
Its really developer fault, if you stop thinking about console war.. and go strait to the problem
They should be ashamed of themselves, cause in the end they are screwing consumers in general.
Now here's my question.
If they are lazy to code for a console.. Why on earth would they complain and release a game with bugs and not well developed?
Don't do it, or please get a job where you know wtf ur doing - wedges, on 11/23/2007, -1/+10do it. price me a $399 pc that will play this game on 1920x1200. i'm serious. i have a 23" cinema display, and i want a pc to play source games on it.
