"To wrap things up, if you can't tell by now, Unreal Tournament III is a blockbuster hit. It's exactly what we were hoping for it to be; a brilliantly executed arena-based first-person shooter, with a plethora of depth, speed, and a virtually infinite scope on replay value. User-created content will drive this game and its online community for years to come, just as it has on the PC. It is visually stunning to behold, with superb texture detail everywhere you look. It allows for mouse and keyboard gameplay, and features a sublime online facet. Unreal Tournament III is the pinnacle of first-person shooters. Others: take note." - LaSepultura, on 12/12/2007, -4/+20I can't wait to run over some PS3 players in my Manta.
VEHICULAR HOMICIDE!!!! - iRoy, on 12/12/2007, -3/+15Holy ***** this game is ***** amazing, I got it yesterday and I have been playing non-stop. Online campaign is pretty tight and the game runs incredibly smooth. It controls really well with the controller also, I am probably going to try out KB&M tonight, about half the people online were using KB&M which is pretty cool for a PS3 game.
I would complain about the lack of split screen but the above comments have clarified a lot for me and I now agree that no split-screen is a good thing.
Add me if you're playing online, only one other guy on my friends list has it ATM... PSN: iRoy - dansmeek, on 12/12/2007, -1/+13believe me, if you have played unreal tournament, playing it splitscreen would be a waste. this isnt goldeneye 007. its unreal. the gameplay is fast, the textures are detailed, and you don't want some crop of the level. the online play is excellent and that matches are so quick. i don't really think it would be all that much fun with the screen divided into 4 sections. just my opinion but.... being that we have internet, free online play, and great connection speed (little lag) today, it's not as important. Back when goldeneye was released, there was no online play for consoles.
And even the single player campaign is pretty fun. The different modes with CTF, etc are a lot of fun. They have a very different feel than death match, and it's here where the game flourishes. Also.... the graphics are incredible -- it looks above and beyond gears of war, and rightfully so. - inactive, on 12/12/2007, -4/+14split screen makes me want to vomit. Goldeneye was the last game I could stomach it for, and let's not kid ourselves - online multiplayer for goldeneye would have been MUCH COOLER.
- Kenzan, on 12/12/2007, -16/+25I'm really regretting my XBOX360 about now...
- inactive, on 12/13/2007, -0/+9Damn, I'm glad nobody said that during the rash of Mass Effect or Halo 3 stories.
- Legolover64, on 12/12/2007, -1/+9This game is beautiful, it's like they took the best of UT 2004 and combined it with the gaming perfection that was the original UT.
Also, the announcer says "PANCAKE" - FredFredrickson, on 12/12/2007, -1/+9Yeah, since most everyone back then had 56k modems for internet, I bet Goldeneye online would have been a ***** blast.
- BugMeNot2, on 12/12/2007, -2/+9But they also stripped out some of the best things from UT 2004 like Assault mode. :(
- kiiwii, on 12/12/2007, -2/+9"online multiplayer for goldeneye would have been MUCH COOLER."
How would it have been cooler? Half the fun of multiplayer Goldeneye was finding and shooting the guy sitting right next to you. - inactive, on 12/13/2007, -3/+9wow someone with a 360 who would like a ps3 sir you are a good man all the other people are dumb ps3 is going to last 3X as long look at the ps2 came out before xbox and is still selling good they dont even make old xboxs haha ya your great
- SLH06, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6I'm glad their final giving it a version number instead of a year in the name.
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6Dude, are you old enough to remember Quake and Quake2? Playing them online usually meant 33.6 or 56k modems and it was just fine. Broadband != good online play, it's all about server optimized netcode and latency.
- Scottypants, on 12/12/2007, -2/+8The user interface was left horribly incomplete, and required users to use outside tweaks and jump through hoops to do simple tasks like finding servers or even spectating games.
You still cannot modify your crosshair in game without adding commands to .ini files in notepad, still no cheat protection, etc. - metaphysical, on 12/12/2007, -4/+10God, this is horribly written.
This review is the equivalent to those lame kids who comment with "first" on internet news stories. Congratulations you're first but you still suck at life. - mu0p, on 12/12/2007, -1/+6awwww ***** manta spam....I HATE THAT *****!
- h4xx3d, on 12/12/2007, -1/+6I picked this game up last night, it is certainly worth it! Gameplay is insanely fast in true UT style and it looks absolutely amazing! Most impressive graphics I've ever seen! Online play is great, you find games in no time and the entire interface is intuitive and very easy to pick up.
- inactive, on 12/13/2007, -2/+7it gets 10 halo 3s out of 10 becuase its 10x better then halo 3
- superkendall, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5The great change I am looking forward to is the hoverboard - nothing was more annoying than the intiial spawn on large maps with too few vehicles for too many people. That meant a long walk for anyone who couldn't hop in or on a ride before they all left in a cloud of dust...
Having a player be able to grapple onto a vehicle is way better than having to rely on them waiting for people to get on, since a lot of drivers just take off as quick as they can. - inactive, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4"And he didn't even mention the fact that the player generated content won't even be available for PS3 at launch.."
Because it is available at launch. There are menu options for it, a section in the manual, space set aside on the harddrive... - trc0, on 12/12/2007, -2/+6Then I guess you can always cross your fingers for a wii port
- damnyooneek, on 12/12/2007, -2/+6yea damn those flashy graphics. its more logical if the game looked boxier and more pixelated. maybe throw in a few frogger and pac man characters would be nice.
- inactive, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4I just played some of the campaign mode, and the instant battle mode.
It's not online only - inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4Split Screen would not do anything positive for Unreal, it would only hinder everything about the game
- DarkShroud, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3PS3 allows full keyboard and mouse support. And PSN uses dedicated servers as well. So it is quite compareable to the PC version.
- Joeshie, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3Yes, you are the only one. The order of the series goes something like this.
UT99 > UT3 > UT2k4 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. UT2k3 - crapspakkle, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3Yes, the PS3 version: http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3164891
Spoiler Alert: 8.0 - Scottypants, on 12/12/2007, -2/+5I really wish I were able to say the same type of things as this review when describing the unfinished PC version.
Regardless, UT still remains one of the most underrated games out there. - inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3Nope i definatly think plenty of people know about it.
- dansmeek, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3oh my mistake. i guess that sucks that you weren't forewarned about that. i would be pissed off. i would actually even consider emailing epic about that. as it may have been a feature that was nearly implemented but was scratched at the last minute to get it released before christmas (honestly).
a lot of companies could care less, but epic is a great company and seriously might consider implementing a patch that allows it (especially if there are enough people that want it).
i have a feeling a lot of review sites didn't mention it, because they didn't ahve a final version of the game. they probably figured it was a feature but hadn't been implemented yet on their prerelease near-final versions.
and yeah, COD4 has great graphics. it has a bit more of a realistic feel for it... but UT3 definitely has nicer textures (and richer), and the framerate is stellar (definitely 30+, and i'd venture to say above 60 FPS from time to time).
why i say unreal is not a good split screen game though is that the action is much faster than cod4. it's like quake (the original) where you run at an unrealistic speed. i think it makes it tough to play with a split screen where games like halo, or cod4 are a little bit slower.
anyway, i'd hope they implement it via a patch, and i'd honestly send an email, or write on their forums about it. - Cole2026, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3If a game has a good thing going for it, why change it? And I would branch out, but I can't find Island Princess Barbie for the Wii anywhere.
- CCB0x45, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3lol, someone has not played red steel or any other Wii shooters.. I have a wii but the shooters are UNPLAYABLE... it mostly doesnt work because theres no good way to point and have the character turn but still aim at people like a gun.
- i208khonsu, on 12/12/2007, -1/+4Cross platform play is possible; however it is not implemented YET. The principal reason why they did not implement it is because Sony requires extensive in house Q&A at sony before any patch is released on the PSN meaning that patches for the PC would be fewer and further in between. However the development team has said that this is a possibility in the future after most of the bugs are ironed out and do express interest in implementing it once it is a practical decision.
- superkendall, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3They also offer the option to play on servers that allow keyboard/mice, so stick users at least will not be at too great a disadvantage... though I imagine most people would go for the keyboard/mice servers if they were at al into playing online.
- Scottypants, on 12/12/2007, -3/+5Yes.
- dansmeek, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2i may add you, i have no one on my friends list either! anyone here on digg with a ps3 and unreal (or even if you don't) is free to add me as well... PSN: dansmeek
- DarkSideofOZ, on 12/12/2007, -2/+5I believe it's "Vehicular Manslaughter!"
- iRoy, on 12/12/2007, -1/+3I LOL'd.
- sleeknerve, on 12/13/2007, -1/+3Insert Hyperbole!
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -1/+3You mean a site thats rigged and bribed?
- philipjfry, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2Epic is a great company. There was a 23 page thread on Epic's forums about splitscreen between Tues night and today that got closed after an admin said they'll see about it in the future. So, while not anything concrete, at least they might consider adding it in.
- FredFredrickson, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2What was unfinished about it?
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -2/+4There's nothing wrong with that. It's UNREAL TOURNAMENT. They don't need to change much.
- pox05, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1you should have had them label it as a gift, that way no taxes
- Cole2026, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1Mods ftw.
- ferrariman60, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1If you go in a mantis thing, then jump over and then descend quickly onto some you get "Pancake." It's not very common, you really have to try for it.
- zdiggler, on 12/13/2007, -1/+2Yeah, just like more people play CS 1.6 then CS:S
- pandaboy99, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1add me psn: pandaboy99 i also have call of duty 4
