- isewise, on 10/11/2007, -3/+59I really don't think the 80GB version is going to sell very well though. You can just buy any 2.5" SATA HDD and swap out the 60GB for anything you want.
Here is a 160GB Western Digital for under $100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136071 - Destinatus, on 10/11/2007, -6/+56This is really unnecessary. I'd rather have a 40GB version with all the same features as the 60GB for $399
- PhillAholic, on 10/11/2007, -11/+41Wow can people shut up about this screwjob? Last time I Checked they weren't raising the price of the console, they were lowering it. Microsoft created a more expensive version, Sony created a version the same price as it's former top model. It's not the same thing. All I wanted is the 60Gb model. So I'm very happy with this announcement. I swear some people could find something negative out of anything.
- Sparke, on 10/11/2007, -8/+37Is this where our industry is going? Launching new versions of consoles aimed at increasing profit margins at the expense of your customers? Shame on you Sony and MS for the extreme markup on your "Elite" models. This new trend needs to stop, along with shipping half a game and charging again to download the rest of it.
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29actually motorstorm is AWESOME. You'd know if you ever played it.
- dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18As you dug the comment down, 3 people dug the same comment up so the change you saw was the difference...
The only bug is with your Caps Lock key. - CheapyD, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19It does seem silly for Sony to only jump from 60GB to 80GB, especially since their competition is at 120GB.
- CheapyD, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18FWIW, the link in this digg story is the original source of the leak (KOTV.com).
- colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -9/+24How about a version that has games that I actually want to play?
- fadetoone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I agree. It's a decent deal with Motorstorm included, but if you don't care about that game, the extra 20 gigs certainly isn't compelling.
Hopefully it will create a nice stir of console sales. That's right folks, you can now get a PS3 with Blu-ray for $20 more than a 360 with a regular DVD drive. Now if we could get some more games, this should become a nice competition. - dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14An interesting move to say the least... The new 80GB is hardly good value in comparison to the $100 reduced 60GB system.
But maybe that is what it is there for (i.e. make the current model look comparatively cheaper) - gutterboy, on 10/11/2007, -6/+19***** Yes! Monday price drop, Tuesday pay check, oh what to do, what to do.
- 1stJonnyDee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13No "multi-tiered pricing" with consoles models. I just wish everything would go back to being "normal" with videogames.
- CReyes4182, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Mediocre? Motorstorm is not mediocre.
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16Dropping the 60gb to 500 is great but are they really charging $40 for 20 extra GB?
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11@ Nitrodist
That's true. And it doesn't have much in terms of extra content (things besides just racing) but as a pure racer, it's amazing fun. - MrFlesh, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Yep nothing like mailing your console back to microsoft every 6 months to get a refurb.
- Namesbond, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Am I the only one whom thinks that 60, 80, 120 GB drives are quickly becoming worthless. I have been a serious audiophile since the mid 90's. If I were to take any of these consoles seriously as a multimedia center I would surely need larger storage capacity then what they are offering. If they were to offer a 500 GB or 1 TB version of one of these consoles I would take them seriously. Who cares whether you have a 60GB or 80 GB either way your not storing all of your content on it.
- deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9It's definitely how the industry is heading because people buy them. I blame the frothing fanboys more than the companies selling the products.
- Murphious, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11It also notes an official $100 price drop for the current model!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+15"Xbox gamers who already own the $399.99 20-gigabyte model can buy a snap-on 120-gigabyte hard drive for $179.99."
$180 for a 120gb hard drive? That's like $50, max.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822144107 - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12By the way, don't give me that ***** about it being a laptop hard drive because those are $70.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149057 - CReyes4182, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8If you actually believe the PS3 has no good games your a complete idiot. Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Resistance fall of Man, Motorstorm, and Super Stardust HD are all awesome games. Theres also the multiplatform games like Fear, Oblivion, Rainbow 6 Vegas, and The Darkness to name a few. Theres also the huge PS2 library since the PS3 lets you play almost 100% of them(at 1080p) There are lots of games on the ps3.
- dugbay, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Thats cause in 2006 the 499 version sucked. Now the 499 version is good.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I bought that same 160GB drive for my PS3. The 80GB idea is retarded.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Here are some prices I have seen recently:
60GB -> $45
80GB -> $55
120GB -> $65
160GB -> $95 (in the first comment)
That means you get $70 worth of added value ($10 difference in HDD and $60 for the game)... for $100. Now, that's not even CLOSE to the level of Microsoft charging 3x the price of a 120GB drive for their upgrade... but it's still not a good deal. - demodawid, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL
- TheXeno, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Why is dropping the current model's price, while giving those who want more HD space bad? Options are good right? Of course they are and so is the added option to upgrade your HD yourself. Sony made a solid reliable machine and now it's cheaper. I can't understand the need to jump on the negative here. This is exactly the type of thing that makes competition a *good* thing, and exactly the type of thing we all benefit from.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9At least 120GB drive for $80 is better than the $180 drive for the 360.
- Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Yeah...that game is strangely addicting...I don't giggle too often while playing video games, but when I run cars and motorcycles off the edge of a cliff...there's something strangely amusing about that.
- TheTaRDy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Maybe somebody doesn't get the concept of "other people also using the internet", it is fairly new technology out of Newby Labs Inc.
A short description follows:
Multiple users are allowed to submit their digg or bury vote at the same time, and will see real time digg rating once they submit their vote or refresh their page. - TheXeno, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7If you are actually disappointed in a price drop of an electronic device which you bought day one, something that was bound to happen, I've got advice for next time: Wait.
- AhrenBa, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10I posted this in another digg of the same story:
"Wow, this is great news! The $499 model is definitely a great deal. I have no clue why someone would want to buy the new 80GB SKU though. You only get 20 more Gigs and Motorstorm for $100 more? I think I would rather pay less and sacrifice the extra 20 gigs.
I agree with the others, I hope this will drive a 360 price cut also. The next generation is too damn expensive, and the costs needs to get driven down somehow." - MasterThief117, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Lets see, I dug you down just now, and it worked for me.
- TheXeno, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7You sir are most definitely on the fringe, not the mainstream.
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7you're forgetting the HIGH QUALITY casing for attaching the drive, that runs $120 EASILY, so Microsoft is actually losing money.
/sarcasm(I shouldn't need to put this...) - Sparke, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8They have a quality system. Very high quality. They just need some quality content to go with it.
- pmuse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6My best advice is if you're looking to make an investment, try an index fund next time instead of a cutting edge electronic device.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5They're losing money anyway... and they make their money in the games that they sell. I think it'd be a wise business move to compete directly with the Xbox 360's pricing scheme and that way you are introducing more systems to play Blu-Ray DVD's and play PS3 games, thus earning them mucho dinero since that means more Blu-Ray titles will be bought and more PS3 games will be bought and the developers will appreciate it as well since they'll have a large base of people to sell to.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It's too short though :(
- iRoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Well you could put a 200GB SATA drive in a PS3 and use a few external HDs with 100GB each in the USB ports so in theory and with a lot of money you can have a lot of memory on a console, but it would be pointless.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Yes, it takes an "anti-scoial" nerd to slide the old drive out of the slot on the side and put a new one in.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5What the ***** are you doing on digg then? Don't you have some important, and social, business to attend?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6It's actually a nice system... but it's expensive. Hey, I guess you get what you payed for.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4will you marry me.
- xstarsprinklesx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Oh come on, I'm a chick and I could swap out a hard drive when I was a teenager. And some people already graduated college.
- dandonia, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5That would make no sense at all for both sony and the person that buys it. The whole point of selling all the consoles with hard drives is so that game developers can make use of them.
- chris35535, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4If you cant help but roll on the floor then how the hell did you type the above
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4hmmm.... i'm torn as to what to do. On the one hand, you made a stupid and pointless comment. On the other hand, you said that Fallout Boy sucks.... It's a tough decision.
- vd0man, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8So let me get this straight...
