- Andytom, on 06/29/2008, -1/+24But Top Gear is on soon.
- Zippo, on 06/29/2008, -0/+15Wow, that was unnecessarily long and complicated.
- goblindegook, on 06/29/2008, -0/+13For starters, every twenty minutes, a kitten comes out.
- AvidPreatorian, on 06/29/2008, -3/+14i think you're doing it wrong. i use linux on ps3 with much success. there are guides out there, find one before blaming hardware you know little about. sad.
- tester80, on 06/29/2008, -0/+10picture-in-picture baby
- inactive, on 06/29/2008, -1/+10I will be watching Top Gear.
- Thekirby45, on 06/29/2008, -1/+10OMG I FORGOT
*runs to a tv* - KielKilla, on 06/29/2008, -1/+9Please explain how it is useless? It can play emulators at a fair speed...
- Thekirby45, on 06/29/2008, -0/+7SPAIN WON ***** YAH
- zapass, on 06/29/2008, -1/+8crippled?
i'm guessing you mean no rsx access...
yet, we have full access to the cell which smokes ~25 P4 at same freq when all the spus are used.
don't blame sony dude, it's the linux community that's taking their time to learn spu programming which is not easy.
i don't know how long it'll take but i do think some very cool stuff will come out.
spus are insanely powerful when programmed properly.
spus are vector dsps running at cpu freq and there are 6 of them avaliable on ps3!!!
how about decoding 400 mp3s o 1 spu? no problemo
now try this on the fastest xeon you can find: lol! - threepio, on 06/29/2008, -1/+7Your lack of ability to a) RTFM or b) use google is appalling.
- Tiptup300, on 06/29/2008, -2/+8I really wish someone would make a PS3 centric distribution of linux. So i don't need a usb keyboard to install it.
- bilb, on 06/29/2008, -0/+5I missed the first goal thanks to the stupid weather channel telling us about a tornado 15 miles away :(
- inactive, on 06/29/2008, -4/+8Yay for Linux.
- Xyc0, on 06/29/2008, -1/+5Buried as out of date. PSubuntu is leagues ahead in features.
- moiety, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4I don't know about the full access comment, haven't played enough with it to really know what you mean, but I completely agree that 256mb just isn't enough to make Linux a very useful OS for the PS3. If you're just looking for a box to host a local apache or mail server or something, sure, it's perfect- but it's usefulness is limited beyond that.
The fact that the platform is open enough to do this stuff though? Unquestionably awesome. - truspector, on 06/29/2008, -1/+5With direct access to the RSX locked down it isn't very useful for any graphically intensive applications. I have a P3-1000 and an old 3d card that runs Ubuntu faster.

- dandonia, on 06/29/2008, -0/+4Well one of the reason I will run it on the PS3 is because my mum has very limited eye sight so letting her use my PC with a 24" monitor doesn't make as much sense as letting her use my soon-to-be PS3 on the 42" TV. I could just keep the PC hooked up to the 42" but its very loud especially compared with the PS3.
My cousin Lee, bought his son Mike a PS3 because he had asked for a console for christmas. Mike is just getting to that point in school where he needs to type up his homework/coursework. Choice between a 360 and mediocre PC or a PS3 that he can do his homework on. Not only does he save money on the initial purchase - he saves money on his electric bill by not having it all on at the same time.
They're just two reasons I would imagine there are more. - MtheoryX, on 06/29/2008, -0/+4For one, if Linux or *nix is mentioned, you need to be able to google/wiki. Since you cannot, you can kindly disregard the entire article.
- raygan, on 06/29/2008, -1/+5I've been hoping for that very thing since buying my PS3. A linux distro with basic controller and wifi support out of the box would be exactly what the PS3 community has been waiting for. Throw some open source games and emulators in with the install and you'd have a whole new games distribution method for the PS3!
I'm also not sure why the Ubuntu variants for the PS3 receive so little attention and support. I installed it and tried for weeks to get it to work, but wifi was a no go, and in my house that made internet access nearly impossible. - malonie, on 06/29/2008, -7/+9man, as an average user who know nothing about linux, seeing those commands makes my head spin
- zapass, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2yes an spu can handle that load although that's 128 kbps max mp3s and after some very aggressive optimizations both at the task level (spurs scheduling and dma pipelining) and instruction level (vector assembly, software pipelining...).
under linux, I don't know anyone who's pushed that far but there's absolutely no reason why it can't happen. since all the action is happening on the spus, it makes no difference at all which OS runs on the ppu: the ppu is like a manager ;)
several games are already using spus quite well. it just takes a lot of time to code these suckas the right way...

there was also a SPUDS (spu driver system where each spu is treated as a PCI card) initiative at some point but I can't find it anymore... - Skitals, on 06/29/2008, -2/+4@daPhoenix: Don't worry, it's just fanboys that have MAYBE installed linux on their PS3 and didn't do anything but look at the desktop. You are right... any useful tasks are impossible. Try running XBMC Linux or MythTV, fanboys, and tell me how that works out for you. Linux on PS3 is about as useful as Linux on a 10 year old computer. That is to say there are some uses, but nothing you want from a device in your media cabinet.
- RedHawk911, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2Woho Spain won! :) Torres was awesome. Spain is a great team, The defend with the best keeper alive is hard to beat and with such a great middle fielders and forwarders:)
Btw, Just beacuse i heard the pirates song in the background i just decided to order the first movie on br tomorrow. - HappyScrappy, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2daPhoenix:
Maybe the problem is you exaggerated the level of crippling. It's not useless as it is, even if it is slightly crippled. - DarkDx, on 06/29/2008, -1/+3All your networks are belong to us.
- MtheoryX, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1That's not a thong.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=0.1 ... - Tiptup300, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1I payed 30 bucks for the cheapest USB keyboard I could find and guess what! It didn't even work. >_> Luckily I could bring it back.
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Is it the episode where they race converted truck boats or the episode where they race converted truck boats?
That's about all BBC America shows. :p - aladrin, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1The receive support from people who care about it. If few care, there's little support.
I think it's cool that the PS3 can run Ubuntu, but I'd much rather use my PC for that and not worry about booting back and forth on my PS3. I can't be alone in this feeling, I'm sure. - inactive, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1"I'm doing it wrong? Oh I guess seeing 256MB of memory, only 2 cores and no direct access to the GPU is just own damn fault. "
You must be doing it wrong, Linux has access to 8 cores. 2 PPC, 6 SPUs.
Plus the RAM/GPU don't affect you much, - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1love how even after all these years you can still count on a dozen ***** zealots to promptly ridicule anyone who has a question with 'RTFM' and other *****
- DarkDx, on 06/29/2008, -1/+2"how about decoding 400 mp3s o 1 spu"
I haven't installed linux on my ps3, but is this actually possible? I mean the spu might do it but is there any software out there that uses the spus to their fullest? - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1I agree, when i got the ps3 i had high hopes for linux, it was the first thing i did with it. But after painful long updates, and lack of good video streaming without choppy video, i was let down

Oh looks like the Digg lemmings are digging me down already - good to see all the rabid Linux fanboys up in arms again. Sad, so sad. - inactive, on 06/29/2008, -9/+9Linux is to slow on the ps3 to be of any use, 256mb of ram isn't enough to do much. Plus without sony giving full access to the system, its very minimal .
- MtheoryX, on 06/29/2008, -1/+1WTF is that?
- UnWeave, on 06/29/2008, -8/+2I lol'd. But unfortunately, yes, Top Gear > '08 finals. I'll watch the highlights, skip all the in between crap. This is massively off topic.
- inactive, on 06/29/2008, -9/+1Top Gear is awesome!
- lgh0s7l, on 06/29/2008, -12/+2echo *your encryption attempts are futile* echo....
- inactive, on 06/29/2008, -12/+2what? i have a ps3 but i dont know anything about linux being on it
the default OS doesnt appear to be linux
and this article doesnt mention anything about the installation or even if there is a need to install linux - Kinnkster, on 06/29/2008, -11/+1What's the point of running it on the PS3 anyhow?
- daPhoenix, on 06/29/2008, -17/+6If only the PS3 Linux side wasn't crippled to complete uselessness. Not that I really expected any less from Sony, lot of talk - little delivered on that side, even if PS3 is a damn sweet machine otherwise.
- mal1964, on 06/29/2008, -13/+2That will be $3 billion dollars.
