- PhantomRogue, on 12/30/2008, -19/+93Its not too expensive. Its just a larger initial investment than the 360. You spend less on the PS3 over its lifespan than you do of the 360. But people see the extra 100 bucks up front and balk at that instead of realizing the additional costs of the 360.
Sure the PS3 may be expensive, but you have to keep it that way, you can't cut the HDD, you cant cut the WIFI, you can't cut the Cell (all things the 360 doesn't come with)... You have to keep it relatively expensive because its parts are expensive. Its NEVER going to drop below the 360's price point because its got a ton more internal components. - republicker, on 12/30/2008, -14/+76Big boy toys always cost more.
- mbm1512, on 12/30/2008, -10/+55youll pay 500 for an Iphone. but wont drop 399 for a bluray/internet browsing/game playing/ media managing/not to mention sexy console? that makes no sense IMO. The ps3 is worth its weight in gold if you use it right. (well maybe not in gold. the ps3 weighs a ***** ton!)
- yorktower, on 12/29/2008, -14/+47I am waiting to see its price to drop 35% lower. Generally speaking, the ps3 price is expensive for an average family.
- CoD4, on 12/30/2008, -9/+42exactly, Just by adding wifi and live you're close to $400 and you still don't get bluray or a browser
- jacksons98, on 12/30/2008, -22/+54PS3 is still a better value than X360. Of course a lot of people don't care about quality or value right now with the way the economy is. All they care about is cheap which is why you see McDonalds, Walmart, and X360 sales increasing.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -13/+44I love my PS3 because it is the centre of my digital media setup - I have all of my videos on a 250GB drive I installed, plus I bought an add on called "PlayTV" which allows me to record digital TV to the PS3. It rocks!
- kemuelste, on 12/29/2008, -36/+64I still think that it is too expensive.
- CrazedLeper, on 12/30/2008, -3/+26PS3 is not cheap but it is worth every penny. It is a very impressive machine....could use a bigger HD and the library is lacking but these are definitely addressable issues.
- MicFury, on 12/30/2008, -10/+33Have to Digg for putting XBOX on the same plate as Walmart and McDonalds.
- danwallace, on 12/30/2008, -5/+27I don't care what anyone says. I love my PS3.
- Zedian, on 12/30/2008, -3/+25I never spent $500 for my iPhone.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -5/+26Sony could cut costs by 99%, it ONLY matters if they pass on those savings to their customers.
- mrhedges, on 12/30/2008, -2/+23Christ, the "PS3 has no games" argument should no longer be used. It's not 2006 anymore.
- JackSchittt, on 12/30/2008, -5/+23I'm probably one of the "suckers". I bought one of the very first PS3's. 60 gb HD, 4 USB Ports, wi-fi, etc. But most importantly -- full backward compatibility with my ps1 and ps2 collection. Yep, I spent $600 on the unit. But to me, it's the best 600 bucks I've ever spent.
I use my PS3 extensively. My best friend is the manager of a video store, which means I get Blu-Ray titles at the same price or cheaper than most people get DVDs. I've got the HD (which has long since been upgraded) holding a ton of videos (and porn) that I've downloaded off of TPB. The thing really is the media center of my house.
But of course, my needs and wants probably differ from the "average" user, and the PS3 fits those needs far, far better than the X-Box 360. The games that I prefer to play are either (a) my old PS2 games, which obviously can't be played on an XBox, (b) available on both systems, or (c) available only on PS3. There are very few titles that are X-Box exclusives that *I* like to play (Though with the X-Box coming down in price, I've thought about picking one up just to play those exclusives. But even then, my PS3 will probably still see far more use.)
This is *my* situation, which makes the PS3 better *FOR ME*. Your needs and wants may vary. Some don't care about Blu-Ray. Others like X-Box Live (which is superior to PSN, even though you have to pay for it.). Others like X-Box's exclusives. Others don't need backwards compatibility. Many fall under two or more of the above. And to them, maybe the X-Box is the better choice. More power to them. There's nothing wrong with that. Each player needs to make the choice that's best for them, whether it's the X-Box, PS3, Wii, or all of them.
I've never understood the fanboy wars at all. I've never understood why X-Box owners ridicule PS3 owners (or vice-versa) and treat them like they're retarded monkeys. There are perfectly valid reasons to own a PS3. There are perfectly valid reasons to own an X-Box. Just because you own a PS3 doesn't make X-Box owners inferior. And vice versa.
I've never understood why people worry about when X-Box loses this exclusive or PS3 loses that one. IMO, more (maybe even all) third-party titles should be cross-platform. It would mean more gamers get to play more games. Let the consoles themselves sell based on the first party titles and what the systems have to offer. - inactive, on 12/30/2008, -7/+24"But it is still too expensive."
*checks cost of a normal bluray player*
*checks cost of ps3*
...wat? Hell, the 360 didn't even come with the HD player!
Not to mention ***** ties into upnp services with EASE, unlike the 360. (Just sayin, it's an awesome media center) - etruscan, on 12/30/2008, -3/+20I don't think the library is lacking. Maybe when it was first introduced, yes... but there is a wide array of games to choose from now, and yes -- even some exclusives. I'm still playing Resistance 2 and Metal Gear Online.
...as for the HDD -- 80GB is more than enough. If you want more, but a 250GB and throw it in there. Sony makes it really, really easy to change the drive. - Renian, on 12/30/2008, -1/+17Yes.
Case in point: Persona 4. - GoteamVenture, on 12/30/2008, -1/+17We recently bought a PS3 for about $400. So far we have used it quite a bit. We also got a Wii a while back and have yet to even hook it up since we got a new TV. It seems like for our gaming tastes, the PS always gets more use than the Nintendo console. I can't say how we would like an X-box, since we have never owned one, but the games that come out on PS and X-box are so similar the difference seems negligible unless you take into account the Blu-ray player, which I would think would be a bonus for the PS3.
- RainNIU, on 12/30/2008, -5/+21At $600 I told Sony to pound sand up their ass. I bought in at $400 and haven't looked back. That's a reasonable price for a game system, Blu-Ray player, Linux computer, and home-media center.
- xxacefirexx, on 12/30/2008, -3/+19You recoup the cost of ps3 by not having to pay for 10 months of XBL, and you get BluRay. Sounds like value to me.
- Sethbacca, on 12/30/2008, -0/+16You are thinking of the 20gb PS3 from launch that did not have WiFi. They do not make this model anymore, but I would still take one for the PS2 backward compatibility. :)
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+15You guys should make a play date.
- PeterNorton, on 12/30/2008, -13/+28Of course they can cut production cost. Volume commands prices. However, I don't think those cost savings will reach through to the customer. They first need to get their finances in order and then the PS3 back on track. Right now, the PS3 is a sad story.
- CoD4, on 12/30/2008, -0/+15older models > newer ones
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -4/+18doubt it. they are still losing money for each one they sell
- JROXZ, on 12/30/2008, -6/+20Pfff Still own a PS2 and STILL in the waiting game.
- etruscan, on 12/30/2008, -7/+20I personally am willing to spend a little more to get a little more. In the case of my chosen console, I just found there were too many factors that leaned towards the PS3 over the 360. It had way better hardware (more reliable), built in WiFi/BlueTooth, the BD player, and exclusive games that won't eventually end up on the PC. I miss not being able to play Gears Of War 2 (yet) but that's ok, because I'd miss Resistance, Killzone, God Of War, LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo, and Metal Gear even more if I didn't have a PS3.
To top it off, I personally liked the XMB interface better, the feel of the controller better, and I enjoy not having to pay for the PSN.
...and while we're talking about the PSN -- I've heard people criticize it a lot. Laggy, crashes, can't launch into games. I've never once seen this happen. Granted, I don't play a lot of MP games on launch day, but I've personally never had an issue with the network.
I think that extra money you spend on a PS3 is more than worthwhile. It unfortunately stymied Sony's console sales (of course) but that's to be expected, and hopefully they can turn that around. Until then, I'm going to enjoy my Playstation 3 regardless. - MaxAmillio, on 12/30/2008, -2/+15only suckers spend 500 on a phone
- greeniemeani, on 12/30/2008, -5/+17Families don't buy a PS3 though - they buy a Wii. I don't expect the price to drop either, as their lowered cost will mean they won't lose as much money.
- danwallace, on 12/30/2008, -1/+13Your definition of "no games" seems to be very, very different from mine.
- PrismoFillusion, on 12/30/2008, -5/+17Hey wow, a Digg article about the PS3 where not *everyone* is bashing it. It's a great system, and the rumor that it has "no good games" is a complete myth. I always have games to play on my PS3, and the vast majority of them are exclusive.
- Zedian, on 12/30/2008, -2/+13Well they're getting better, Little Big Planet, Valkria Chronicles and MGS4 were all top notch exclusive titles.
On the other hand....most of their cross over titles are weaker on PS3 opposed to Xbox 360. - tiridako, on 12/30/2008, -1/+12PS2 here and I'm in the waiting game too. Cheers
- FredFredrickson, on 12/30/2008, -2/+13You actually use yours for Linux?
- PsychoDeli, on 12/30/2008, -1/+11Also remember that PS3 is suffering 0% piracy...I wonder when if ever the PS3 will ever be cracked....
- mooninite, on 12/30/2008, -3/+12Wifi, online gaming, hard drive... hello?
You're delusional if you think paying for a community makes it better. Just like a fraternity: paying for friends is never cool. - 7m7uf, on 12/30/2008, -0/+9I want PlayTV... I wish they would release a US version. If they did, i'd buy it and a PSP.
- Matt2k, on 12/30/2008, -2/+10I own both consoles and have no particular preference as far as brand goes. I do most of my gaming on the PC anyway, but I lean a little towards my PS3 for the following reasons. If they can lower the price 30%, Sony will have a strong offering IMO
. Free multiplayer. Xbox has a stronger platform, but I don't care about the whole friends thing so much. I just want a quick match online sometimes.
. Ancillary to that, Microsoft comes off as charging for every little service on the XBOX. I feel like I'm dealing with my cellphone carrier.
. Blu-ray + HDMI + my monitor
. Wireless
. Good backwards compatibility remains despite threats otherwise. I know its not perfect, but I've never had a title that wouldn't play. I tried catching up on old Xbox titles, but got tired of trying to guess which ones would work.
I do wish the PS3 came with a microphone out of the box though - duewydo, on 12/30/2008, -2/+10The best part is that the article states that they have also cut power consumption. This is important as from an earlier digg article I saw that the PS3 was the biggest power consumer of all the consoles. This could translate into less heat and longer life, so over all a better product at a cheaper price, they are getting there.
I just cannot believe that after all this time the PS2 can still compete. - JackSchittt, on 12/30/2008, -1/+8I've owned a PS3 since launch and still own the same one I bought. I use it extensively for games and movies and have not had one single problem with it.
- MaxAmillio, on 12/30/2008, -4/+10i think you're missing the point. It's too expensive because of the larger initial investment, not the other way around. At least that is what the market has been telling sony.
Sony has been trying to sell PS3 based on the cost argument and that hasn't worked very well up until this point - DeepFreezed, on 12/31/2008, -1/+7+ House

what teh heck, 360 cost over $200,000 - utvolmiles, on 12/29/2008, -10/+16I agree it is a little too expensive...if the cost of production has been cut by 35% than hopefully Sony will pass these savings to the customer
- kinseyincanada, on 12/30/2008, -5/+11all that stuff is not needed to play games, bottom line i can go out and pay 200 and play all the latest games as opposed to 400 with the PS3
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -2/+8I was in your shoes,I just needed to play Metal Gear Solid 4 but realized one game isn't worth paying $400 for.I ended up getting a 360 and never regretted it.Just hope i don't get that dreaded red ring anytime soon.
- Macintoshreader, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5@kolop1:
How exactly is PlayStation Network "an absolute joke"? You might want to give some compelling reasons as to why Xbox Live is better. They have pretty much all the same features, but PSN is free.
Sure, you can buy a hard drive, but it's a proprietary and overpriced one. Can you put a 500GB Hard Drive on an Xbox 360? No. What about the PS3? Yes. And it doesn't void your warranty—Sony even gives instructions on how to do it. - eavesdrop, on 12/30/2008, -1/+6200 dollars for a ps3? I want some of what you're smoking
- Spuy767, on 12/30/2008, -2/+7That's one thing I LOVE about the PS3. It sits as a centerpiece of my Home entertainment system as the only visible unit because it matches the decor of my TV. The 360 is hidden away.
- VyRuZ, on 12/30/2008, -1/+6I'm glad, palin2012, that you finally nailed a comment rated above +1 diggs.
