- inactive, on 05/31/2008, -52/+178From the 9.9 IGN review. "One of those things that Konami doesn't want us to talk about is the 'total length of cut-scenes'. Hopefully it won't be bending the rules to far to reveal that they represent about half of the content of the game"
Aww afraid to bend the rules? I wonder what else they did for Konami and how much they paid IGN. 9.9 for a game that is half cutscenes? ***** *****. - juliandunbar11, on 05/31/2008, -15/+122ohh, you mean the 4.8 gig mandatory install and rumored 90 minute cutscenes?
- truspector, on 05/30/2008, -6/+73Well, at least they didn't send a review guide ala lair.
- Rapter09, on 05/31/2008, -4/+69Gotta get 'outta this trend: Developers don't get to choose what does and does not get reviewed or reported. Unless we're talking NDA, and obviously you'd never want the game's story told to you in a review. But this overly so.
- BedPost, on 05/31/2008, -13/+66Konami: "Hey, don't mention these parts... it's not like it'd spoil the plot or anything, but please don't."
Reviewer (Not Gamespot): "Why not? We try to give our readers accurate representations of the game and it's quality, so omitting some parts seems unfair to them."
Konami:"Look, we're not trying to pad our score. Just don't."
Reviewer:"...."
If I was that reviewer, I'd be giving Konami the middle finger. This seems like a shady thing to do.
Also, why the ***** is my comment box FREAKING OUT?! It keeps resizing as I type! Very annoying! Gah! - AvidPreatorian, on 05/31/2008, -11/+64If you don't like MGS style of story-telling, DON'T GET IT. wtf are you mad at? are you forced to buy the game? MGS is ALWAYS plenty-full of cutscenes. if that doesn't rub you right, don't buy one and stop bitching.
btw, GamePro said no 90 minute cut scenes: http://dailygamesnews.blogspot.com/2008/05/gamepro ... - Cyber_Akuma, on 05/31/2008, -3/+43Whats the point of a review if the company that made the game being reviewed feels they can control what the reviewer can and cannot say?
- sakuraz, on 05/31/2008, -12/+44If you want 100% gameplay, play pac-man.
- Zettabyte, on 05/31/2008, -2/+31Well at least they didn't bribe the reviewers.
- frenchkick, on 05/31/2008, -7/+34mtv?
i'll get my gaming news somewhere else thank you. - krische, on 05/31/2008, -7/+33The only people would see those 2 things as negative are the people who probably wouldn't buy the game anyway. I personally don't care about the size of a hard drive install. The drive is there, why not use it like it was meant to be? And I don't care about the length of cut scenes. If it makes a compelling story, then so be it.
- chillypacman, on 05/31/2008, -2/+27It's still unacceptable.
Games reviews have suddenly turned into hype machines, it's no longer about providing valid critique, it's about hyping games even more so.
This happens in other industries too (such as with movie reviews) where an exceptionally good or bad product starts getting lots of extremely positive/negative reveiws as the writers try to one up each other for attention. Except with gaming it looks like things are going this route but not stopping, gaes are being overhyped to hell and back with reviews and people just sit back and read them as if they were nothing.
In all fairness reviews do exist for entertainment value so if that is what they're providing then it's better than nothing. - chillypacman, on 05/31/2008, -6/+29They didn't pay IGN for the 9.9, IGN paid Konami to get in an early 'exclusive' review of the game for which they had to give it an obnoxiously high score.
- brodycrider, on 05/31/2008, -3/+26konami shouldn't worry about an installation time effecting their reviews. hell even gta iv had like an 8 min installation on the ps3 before you could start playing. unless their installation time is like 2 hours and fills up my ps3's hard drive, that would piss me off.
- ByteGuerilla, on 05/30/2008, -10/+33So all the people who, in console-war stories, dugg down comments about MGS games becoming more like movies with savepoints: I presume you're going to concede and digg this story up?
- Borgcube, on 05/31/2008, -7/+29ala Kane and Lynch
- bigbadgoat, on 05/31/2008, -31/+52So IGN gives the game a 9.9, meaning it's nothing short of absolutely stellar, and you guys get hung up on the install and the cut scenes? It's pretty ***** obvious that they have little to no impact to the overall experience the game offers. Look at you *****. You know if devs had the ability to partially install games on an xbox 360 they'd be doing it. Anything to cut down load times, to improve frame rate, it only makes sense to use whatever tools you have in front of you to make the best game possible.
Its an MGS game, it's going to have cut scenes. It's gonna have incredible, compelling cut scenes and I'm going to love every second of playing and watching this game.
At this point all you're sounding like is a bunch of bitter fanboys who are disappointed that you're going to have to buy a PS3 or go over to a buddy's house in order to play it, because it's shaping up to be a must-have title. - OpNash, on 05/31/2008, -3/+24You know... perhaps we should actually play the game before we start criticizing it.
- surfacewound, on 05/31/2008, -1/+22I don't necessarily mind a game having a lot of cut scenes as long as they're good and improve the story, but it damn well better have pause, rewind and skip features if they're going to be frequent and/or long.
- noseeme, on 05/31/2008, -1/+19OH MY GOD MY SKIN IS COVERED IN ANTS!!!!
- lcmatt, on 05/31/2008, -0/+17Problem is most only come with a 40GB HDD which is going to fill up very quickly. Before you say anything yes I know you can replace the HDD but some people might not be able to afford it, know it's possible or not technology wise.
Consoles have always been quick to setup and play with very little hassle, having to install game data or upgrade the HDD just to play a game just turns the whole thing into a PC. - keviniskool, on 05/31/2008, -2/+19What do you call the five second intermissions?
- Borgcube, on 05/31/2008, -6/+22Long cutscenes? Ok.
Watching a movie when you should be playing a game? Not ok.
I mean, sure, most japanes games have long cutscenes to tell the story, but frankly, if you need a 90 minute long cutscene to explain what is going on instead of explaining it through gameplay, you are doing something very wrong. - specialK16, on 05/31/2008, -7/+23Wow, apparently people with no PS3 are getting too much sand on their pussies to accept that what makes MGS IS the story and the cutscenes, and regardless of that, the gameplay is still better than most games out there.
And guess what, I don't have a ps3 either. - GodsDragon, on 05/31/2008, -3/+19That reminds me of Xenosaga that game has massive cut scenes and I still enjoyed the game and in my opinion the cut scenes added alot to the game overall. So I don't see how MGS4 will be any different.
- watership, on 05/31/2008, -2/+17Normally I would agree with you. However the thing Konami doesn't want people knowing is that there are multiple installs. Sometimes after every chapter.
- intregus, on 05/31/2008, -2/+16if the cut scenes are enjoyable, then i don't care. i'm a fan of the series, but i'm still taking this "9.9" with a grain of salt for now.
- chris9902, on 05/31/2008, -8/+21I hate the whole install thing. You know a time will come when you get a call and be like "hey, you wanna play MGS?" and get "let me just delete some content and install it. be about 30 minutes" as a response.
That's gonna suck. - daybreak, on 05/31/2008, -0/+11People keep getting salty about whether or not the game is good...not the issue. The issue is whether or not reviewers are being told what to say, and what's going to happen to them if they don't comply. Leave the fanboyism and hating at home, please.
- joecolly, on 05/31/2008, -5/+16I doubt they would pay anyone to give the game a good score anyway - it's pretty much a given that the game is going to be awesome, and I'd imagine most sites or magazines will give it 8/10 or above. It would be a waste of money in my opinion.
- inactive, on 05/31/2008, -0/+11Agreed. I just can't trust 'big game reviews' anymore, specially gamespot (I don't know how people keep reading that ***** after the 'Kane and Lynch' incident). As the game industry grows bigger and makes more profit with each game, there is more at stake. Money corruption 101 I think...
- Snokage, on 05/31/2008, -2/+12omg common sense is not allowed here!
- RadiatedAnt, on 05/31/2008, -0/+10He's right folks stop digging him down, after a few levels pac-man and ms. pac-man have a stork
- reposado, on 05/31/2008, -7/+17I play metalgear FOR the cutscenes... They are some of the BEST cutscenes ever made.
- thebaron2, on 05/31/2008, -1/+10How about Kotaku or Eurogamer - those are the articles referenced in this one. It's just one blog rehashing others' previous reviews.
- bakatrinh, on 05/31/2008, -1/+9Next thing you know you gotta upgrade your console's graphics card and sound card just so you can have an edge over everyone else.
- iburyfamilyguy, on 05/31/2008, -1/+9How about the gameplay should be the number 1 factor in making a game, and anything that the developers put in to ruin the gameplay like long cutscenes and install time should be included in the review.
- screwfanboys1, on 05/31/2008, -0/+7ala 90% of games
- joecolly, on 05/31/2008, -23/+30Just because half the game may be cut scenes, doesn't mean it doesn't deserve a high score.
The gameplay itself could still be the same amount of content as any other game, with the cut scenes just thrown in between. - TheAkolyte, on 05/31/2008, -2/+9What if the cutscenes are 30 seconds, and the gameplay is 30 seconds, and the rest of the data is just advertisement for the game?
- solid12345, on 05/31/2008, -0/+7Am I the only one who hates long cut scenes?
When I work 8 to 5 everyday and have to run errands and cook dinner, the one hour I get for video game time I don't want to spend half of watching cut scenes. There is a reason the average person only sees 1-2 movies a week, its quite an investment of time I need for life. - inactive, on 05/31/2008, -4/+11If it's a movie, don't call it a game. If all you do is guide a character to a predetermined point and wait for a cutscene every few minutes, it is not a game. That's like saying any DVD with an interactive menu is a 'game.'
- jugglingjon, on 05/31/2008, -0/+7I prefer when games have the story unfold as I play it, like Half Life 2 for example. I wouldn't be too happy if Half Life made me sit through long cut scenes that have no replay value.
- Ribbys, on 05/31/2008, -2/+9The gaming review business is shady at best. But MGS4 is getting top marks from pretty much everyone so its hard to call shenanigans on this one IMO.
- sonicbliss, on 05/31/2008, -0/+7So 8/10 is garbage?? The same score they gave to Gears of War?? Back to bed son... theyre Desperate for page hits. have you read that review? "Don't come back snake" while saying along the lines of: "its an incredibly funny, creative, intelligent game" in closing comments.
Yeah trust the ugly duckling site i.e. the only one to score it below a 9, out of like 10 different reviews so far, and tell me its not to get some attention.
They know what theyre doing, the rest dont, they stand for the truth... /sarcasm. - tenspeedogbb, on 05/31/2008, -1/+7An old Snake is still 10 times better than a young Raiden.
- Shuk, on 05/31/2008, -1/+7Why does everyone whine about cutscenes? Can we not have cinematic value in games anymore? If you wanna just shoot crap, go get any of the hundreds of first-person shooters out there. MGS is about STORY, its THE main component. The gameplay is almost secondary to the epicness of the story. I'm happy that the cutscenes are half the game!
- reb42, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6Does that mean half of the space is occupied by cutscenes, or half of the time?
- Bith8654, on 05/31/2008, -1/+7Actually the eurogamer review, you know the one that DID state information about the cutscenes and load times, says there are multiple install times.
"Take note, however, that there are several minutes of install time to be endured, not just at the start, but before each act - albeit graced with a fantastic animated graphic of Snake smoking next to some health warnings."

So congrats Avid, for the second time on this comment thread, you look like an *****. - DemDude, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5Since when is 8/10 garbage?
No hard feelings, but you're an idiot. -
