As an engineer I can tell you that in design having the imagination and common sense to come up with a great idea is more essential than how smart you are to solve a given problem. I saw one great example of this in a Canadian documentary about the Canadian fighter jet called the arrow (CF-105). The aerospace engineers had a huge problem with the landing system on the jet. The legs of each train were too short for the needed specs and they could not afford any more delays. They were discussing this out loud in the hangar and a janitor "mr. nobody" came from nowhere and ask them "What if you tilt the wings down? That way the current wheels could touch the ground". The chief engineer almost laughed about it but, after a quick mental check and a look at the plane, though it was a brilliant idea. It saved a ***** of redesign and time of calculations just by a simple idea. I always remember this and keep an open mind to suggestions.
