- shoppingkart, on 04/27/2009, -2/+102Since when did the hyphen become the new apostrophe?
- arsenyv, on 04/27/2009, -4/+73Sony's biggest mistake was removing backwards compatibility, considering the PS2's massive game library.
- prime9891, on 04/27/2009, -3/+64I love my 360, as well as my PS3. Why can't we all get along?
- khildahl, on 04/27/2009, -3/+46New to the internet, are you?
- MAGZine, on 04/27/2009, -15/+53Microsoft released the 360 before it was ready, spent massive $$$ fixing it, and caused customers a lot of headache.
... but apparently it was worth it. /facepalm - koldmilk, on 04/27/2009, -2/+32All the cool kids are doing it...
- dododohead, on 04/27/2009, -1/+27apparently these guys who write articles don't really know math or simple finance.
if microsoft lost billions fixing their defective units, how much did that cut into their profits? What kind of winning are we talking about here anyways? Ones that don't involve money? Isn't that just fanboyism? It doesn't matter how cool you are, but you won't make it unless you can make a profit. Sony spent too much money making their machines and Microsoft spent too much fixing their machines. But Sony is always blamed for it, when in the end the end user gets much more frustrated by the 2nd scenario. - roxgod666, on 04/27/2009, -3/+24I-m doing it.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -2/+22I hope you pass a 6-inch jagged kidney stone through your urethra.
- liam1, on 04/26/2009, -14/+34I agree taking backwards compatibility out was a harsh move. I'm lucky enough to have a 60gb original model with backwards compatibility, although I'll be honest (not surprisingly) I don't play many PS2 games on it. It's nice to be able to - but with such a great catalogue of games it's hard to justify spending time on a PS2 game. I do have some great PS2 games though so it'd suck to not be able to play them when I feel like it.
About the PS3 selling faster than 360, according to figures I looked at not too long ago, it was very much the case (worldwide, not region specific, we all know PS3 performs better outside US). At the start of it's lifespan it was performing admirably, but pretty much on par with the 360, but then it shot up (when all the PS3 negativity died down online..) and has been performing much better than 360 for a while now, so there's actually only a few million between the 2 consoles now.
Yeah it is too expensive, I definitely agree, but at least it's an initial one-off cost, not like the 360 where you need to pay an arm and a leg for anything you want (HDD, wifi, online, etc). I own both consoles, and I haven't bothered getting Live for 360 nor upgrading the 20gb (tiny) HDD nor getting the wifi adapter. It's just not worth it to me when I have a PS3. - inactive, on 04/27/2009, -0/+19I agree. There are tons of ps2 games sitting at my local superstore and they would make excellent impulse purchases at $15 bucks. Except my Ps3 doesn't play them and used PS3 games are close to 20 bucks, so there will be increasingly less reason to purchase them. Sony ***** up, especially since some of the PS3 sites claim that the emu is actually in the firmware, just not activated.
- Whackly, on 04/27/2009, -4/+22Because whatever thing I like best (because I own one), even if only the most pedantic differences exist, is better than whatever thing you like best and what you like best is a complete piece of crap and so, vicariously, is everything associated with it and anyone who supports it.
- VelvetoneFusion, on 04/27/2009, -2/+18What% you didn-t know thatΔ Keep up with the times% man#
- FutureGuy, on 04/27/2009, -5/+20Sony made a ton of mistakes, so many that someone should write a book. The biggest mistake was arrogance, Sony grossly underestimated both MS and Nintendo. Lesson 1 in technology is not to underestimates MS, especially when its really after a certain market.
- uberduger, on 04/27/2009, -0/+12I used to think that too, but then a few of my all-time favourite TV shows got cancelled due to low ratings.
I think the reason that fanboys get so worked up is that they see one console as 'losing' which they fear will see developers leaving a sinking ship. Analogous to the situation with TV, where lower figures can see the financier cutting their losses and pulling out.
(That said, RIP Journeyman - we never truly knew ye.) - AmusedToDeath, on 04/27/2009, -2/+14The games are on bluray discs. They cannot take out bluray. I repeat, since this is at least the 100th time I've seen this inane suggestion, THEY CANNOT TAKE OUT BLURAY. It would be like selling a DVD player that doesn't play DVDs. The hard drive is also pretty much a necessity because of game installs and DLC.
- bjs3171, on 04/27/2009, -4/+16anyway...Infamous looks pretty sweet.
- PlusTheBear, on 04/27/2009, -0/+12Well, yea. Launch Price. And people said *****. By buying the underpriced/powered wii.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -2/+14I WILL BATTLE YOU TO THE DEATH.
- silence7, on 04/27/2009, -2/+13I've got a 360 and a Wii, and would love to one day get a PS3, price drop and putting backwards compatibility back in would be the incentive I would need.
- Wrangler76, on 04/27/2009, -4/+15How did the consumer win? They had to deal with much higher hadware failure rates than should've been accepted!
- przemeklach, on 04/27/2009, -4/+14The console war will never be over and as a consumer I like that. Having said that I think xbox won this round and it will be interesting to see what happens when the next gen of consoles comes out.
- CLShortFuse, on 04/27/2009, -3/+13Gee golly whiz, this generic newspaper article is so informative and swell!
- krogothwolf, on 04/27/2009, -1/+11So you're advocating a PS2? you can get that for 100 bucks now. PS3 games are in Blu-Ray, without the blu-ray it can't play PS3 games.
- MrFisty, on 04/27/2009, -3/+13Who cares. Seriously, just be happy with the console you own. Unless you own shares, I don't give a rat's about sales figures. Some of my favourite games and consoles are the ones that sold next to nothing.
- Nosyn, on 04/27/2009, -8/+17"given the weak economy and the PS3's relatively huge price tag — at $400, its entry-level price is double that of the Xbox."
Double? Oh right, the piece of crap 'Arcade' version that Microsoft is trying to best against the Wii's price. - snobrder218, on 04/27/2009, -0/+9Seriously? Just grow up. Why do some games look and run slightly better on the 360 then? I'm sure the 360 could handle Uncharted fine, but not without a few minor hiccups that you wouldnt even notice.
Don't go off calling me an xbot or something, I own a PS3. I'm just really tired of people making ignorant comments about a system when they don't even know how to program something as simple as a temperature converter.
I didn't buy, nor do I want a 360 because it's dumb or something, its because it's just not in my interest. I don't like the controller, the layout of the Dashboard, and there are only a few games on it that the PS3 doesn't have. Your only example that the PS3 is better is Blu-ray. Yes, I love me some HD movies, but at this point in time, you're not going to really notice the difference between uncompressed and compressed audio/textures/etc.
The only thing I dislike that people say is that the PS3 lags behind in sales. Considering they are going to "win" japan, and they're 1 million behind in EU, it's hardly lagging behind. Yes, in the states it's getting it's ass kicked, but regardless, ~23 million sold compared to ~30 million sold isn't a whole lot. Thats only and average of 2.33million per region.
Regardless, take a step back next time and think about what you're saying. It's amazing how fanboyism can still exist. I guess people want to be able to justify their purchase if they only can make one, but still. Doesn't mean you have to be ignorant to a system that has some great features and titles.
I can give you reasons I love my PS3 and why I got one over 360 and prob will never get a 360, but I wont go around bashing the 360, calling it inferior and better.
Keep in mind: The Wii is inferior in SEVERAL ways to both. Yet it's kicking some serious ass.
"inferior" hardware != worse console - Elranzer, on 04/27/2009, -2/+11Their biggest mistake was:
"Five hundred and ninety-nine US dollars." - Hirai
"People will get a second job to afford one." - Kutaragi - MJM573, on 04/27/2009, -6/+15Why is puft a moron? There are more 360's out than PS3's and games that are sold for both systems typically do better on the 360 rather than the PS3.

In the business sense, yeah Sony did lose. Does that mean their product sucks? Nope, just they didn't plan their release right nor did they consider Microsoft a legitimate threat. You bet your ass they will the next generation. - Wrangler76, on 04/27/2009, -1/+8Correct me if I'm wrong (I don't own any consoles), Live costs $43 per year according to the article, so unless you're assuming that you'll only be playing on your X360 for a year (a waste IMO), that calculation is wrong. It's actually $130 if you plan to use your X360 for 3 years, which I think is a reasonable number of years for most gamers.
The price gap suddenly became a lot smaller for even you, with a cheaper X360 Arcade.
I think that's why I think X360 is still selling well. People always compare the prices they see at Wal-Mart, they don't look long-term to see what they're paying and getting over the next several years. - Velnich, on 04/27/2009, -9/+16and... FLAME ON!!
- sloach, on 04/27/2009, -1/+8I think it became cheaper to buy a new PS2 and a PS3 after they took out backwards compatibility than it was to buy a PS3 before they took it out.
I think the biggest mistake was/is price. - JeffDUpp, on 04/27/2009, -9/+15and you sound like a 360 fanboy so its a draw
- t0ny, on 04/27/2009, -1/+7And if it was not rushed then Microsoft could have found the problems and fixed them before releasing it.
- nickert0n, on 04/27/2009, -2/+8My 360 died under one year of use (but not purchase, it was a x-mas gift from my wife) and because it was two red rings (error code 0013; RAM overheating) it was not covered under warranty and they wanted $150 to fix it plus shipping. Well I said ***** that sold everything my 120 GB HDD and 17 games( Kept Gears 1,2, and HALO for nostalgia). The games on the 360 are very good, but when the console is a peice of ***** why do people support it? Back in my day we had standards, your SNES or Genesis never broke and if they did you would goto the other company because the consumer should not have to pay for something thats broken. Now a days kids lube up their asses and pay $60 a month on a machine that breaks down when another alternative with FREE ONLINE comes around but because its not the "popular" thing they dont want it. I truly miss my 360 but when that ***** died and wasent covered, no way man I have standards.
Anyways picked up my PS3 (which I was planning to do before my 360 died) I popped in Little Big Planet and I was hooked, I mean hooked, I was totally into my 360 collecting all of the freaking agility orbs in crackdown (which I do miss) but man I now have more games for my PS3 then I did for the 360. Killzone 2, the best FPS ever. Uncharted = The new Tomb Raider, Little Big Planet a game that never stops giving, Cross Platform games AND way better games on the PSN lie Tekken 5 DR in FULL 1080 P.
The PS3 > XBOX 360
***** sales, I play games. - inactive, on 04/27/2009, -2/+8Only if the tea has the official Microsoft seal of quality on the box. I am not drinking that ***** Wii Tea.
- frygar, on 04/27/2009, -2/+8I think it's fair to say that Nintendo curb-stomped Microsoft repeatedly this round. Poor, poor MS. They can't ever catch a break, can they?
- dododohead, on 04/27/2009, -4/+10trying to be edgy?
;( - unitedatheism, on 04/27/2009, -1/+7Ok, so the article says that Sony is lagging behind everybody else (which we all knew) and that it will turn it all around by releasing great games, WOW, that's terrific! Why nobody thought that before?
Buried for being lame. - johndavidjack, on 04/27/2009, -1/+7What did he say?
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -0/+6Yes, this is relevant. Tell us more, I am very interested in this development regarding swine flu and the Microsoft Xbox 360.
- sugarazor, on 04/27/2009, -4/+10360 sells way more software though. Just sayin.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -0/+5mbraynard: fair enough. Sony's worried that I'm going to substitute Soccom 1/2 etc for Soccom confrontation. They're not substitutes and for little to no effort Sony could also get my extra $15 for the old classic PS2 games.
The Wii for example, hasn't suffered because they included classic (downloadable) games with the system. If anything it's a major plus for the console. no one's saying oh I got F-Zero, so I'm not buying Mario Kart Wii. I totally don't get Sony's decision.. - rg8670bx, on 04/27/2009, -1/+6Yet another dumbass Sony fanboy spouting off nonsense. Dual layer DVD's hold 8.5 gigs, 8 of them would total 68 gigs which is considerably more than a dual layer 50 gig bluray.
- nugz85, on 04/27/2009, -4/+9yeah same with me, i played the ps2 games for the first few months i had the PS3, but once i built up my PS3 library, i havent even looked at my PS2 games. i have like 3 new PS3 games i need to play...
- emjaymj, on 04/27/2009, -4/+9"but I've seen a lot more games on 360 than ps3."
Is this a troll? The 360 has like 1 good exclusive. - lennybird, on 04/27/2009, -1/+5Doing it right-am I?
- ASSASSYN360, on 04/28/2009, -1/+5After the PS1 the only reason I won't buy a PS3 is the same reason I din't buy a ps2. That damn tiny controller.
- PlusTheBear, on 04/27/2009, -3/+7One has a larger library of next gen (this gen?) games than the other. And when it comes down do it, the consumer wins when there's more games. See PSOne or PS2 for more details.
EDIT:I'm not going to clarify which console has more games so I won't be labeled a fan boy. - Jeremyz0r, on 04/27/2009, -1/+5Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you're talking about this generation of consoles.. the winner is clearly the Phantom.
