- DarkTranquility, on 02/15/2008, -2/+42This would literally make the PS3 the only "box" for your entire living room...With the new PS3 SKU on the horizon, this would be the perfect addition since you can save HD quality stuff on a PS3 in a snap...COME TO THE UNITED STATES!!!!
- TI3GIB, on 02/15/2008, -3/+28I strongly support the suggestion that the PS3 will sell more units than the 360 this year. This new feature looks really really cool.
- DarkShroud, on 02/15/2008, -3/+23Damn that's awesome. I have to record on my media center PC and then stream that to my PS3 or through PSP through remote play. We need this in the US please.
- drizzlelicious, on 02/15/2008, -1/+19Europeans have no excuse not to get a PS3 for their home entertainment system
- STARTSOMETHING, on 02/15/2008, -0/+16We could have this if it wasn't for cable and satellite companies. Trying to make an extra buck off their dvr's.
- CrimsonBlur, on 02/15/2008, -2/+17Air broadcast of TV isn't nearly as good in the US as it is in Europe, this peripheral would be next to useless in the US, so don't expect it to ever make it over here. I live in downtown Seattle and I don't get jack for OTA reception.
The reason the Japanese and Europeans get all of this cool stuff is because their TV and Cell networks are 10x better than they are here and their market penetration is massively better than in the US. - BinaryDelt, on 02/15/2008, -3/+17That's ***** awesome.
- sickswaystop, on 02/15/2008, -3/+16ps3 was so worth the wait! this is awesome
- svander, on 02/15/2008, -0/+12True.
Unfortunately there's also little hope of this kind of thing hitting the US where we are getting sued into oblivion for copyright infringement; it's enough for Sony not to even want to risk getting dragged into any of this crap. And I don't blame them really. We're reaching a point in this country where the fear of getting sued is hindering advancement and distribution of technology... Sad times. - elvenseven, on 02/15/2008, -3/+14Damn the UI looks real sexy.
- coheedcollapse, on 02/15/2008, -1/+11I really wish this were coming to the US sometime in the foreseeable future. I'd hate to spend the extra money on building my own DVR when I have a device with excellent potential to become one in the future.
- dillonstars, on 02/15/2008, -0/+9How could sony have done this without an addon? There's no aerial socket in the PS3
- DanGleesacks, on 02/15/2008, -1/+10HAHA... its about ****ing time we got something before you lot! You always get everything before Europe, so stop your bitchin about PS3 TV... We'll let you know how it works when we come to visit you in the "land of the free" with our PSP Slims and show you some good old English TV through it... Europe can have their cake and eat it! In your face America! :D
- MasterPlayer, on 02/15/2008, -2/+11When this comes to North America, 300 GB hard drive here I come.
- NerveBand, on 02/15/2008, -2/+11What a wonderful interface. Well thoughtout and perfectly executed.
- toppgun, on 02/15/2008, -3/+11MGS4
- coheedcollapse, on 02/15/2008, -1/+9Yeah seriously. If this came to the US I'd immediately upgrade my HD to 120gb and freaking record my ass off. It'd save so much money in the long run since comcast absolutely LOVES to rip me off by charging me $15 a month extra for a box that can handle HD channels that i can get straight to my tv and $10 a month extra for HDR capabilities.
If they'd just free up all of the processors and acceleration in the Linux part I'd be fine using MythTv and an external tuner. - ChinezePanda, on 02/15/2008, -1/+8I just love the one word he said...
FREE.
If this was Microsoft... this would cost at least 800 points..... Per show
/ohsnap - shinythingy, on 02/15/2008, -0/+7Nobody gives a flying ***** what your PC can do. This is about the PS3 not PC.
- coheedcollapse, on 02/15/2008, -0/+7Seriously. Comcast wants to charge me almost $30 more a month for a DVR box that can receive HD channels. I can plug my damn tv straight into the wall and get HD channels and they expect me to buy into that BS. Yeah right.
- shinythingy, on 02/15/2008, -0/+7You're an idiot. You clearly don't know what this is or what it does. No console could do this without an add on
- JigoroKano, on 02/15/2008, -0/+6Apple TV doesn't have a tuner.
- coheedcollapse, on 02/15/2008, -1/+7Lawl lawl lawl. You are so funny.
Seriously though you're an idiot. I love people who pretend that a gaming system can only game and nothing more. Like those extra additions to gaming are bad or something. "What, your console plays mp3's? I thought it was a gaming system!" - elchuy, on 02/15/2008, -3/+8If it Sony releases this in the US, I'm standing in line to buy one.
- coolcole93, on 02/15/2008, -0/+5Well said that man!
- bdawg123, on 02/15/2008, -1/+5So apparently yivkX360 is too stupid to read a product description. I think everyone and their mother knew that the PS3 was a multi-function unit right from the beginning. You're just now figuring this out? Welcome to 2008, fool.
- widgetmaker, on 02/15/2008, -0/+3http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/technology/2008/02/ps3_ ...
I really hate engadget spam. - BIGJHUB, on 02/15/2008, -1/+4wets.
- TobyDumb, on 02/15/2008, -1/+4That PSP Connection thing is pretty *****' sick...
- JayD16, on 02/15/2008, -1/+4The US doesn't have this thing is because we don't have digital broadcasts yet. This is may be feasible in 09 but not now.
- coheedcollapse, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2I live 20 miles outside Chicago and get all of the basic HD channels in fine OTA. I guess it depends on what antenna you're using.
- counterplex, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2Would OTA be required for this? If you plug your digital cable into the device you should start seeing good signals.
- CrimsonBlur, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2Well the antenna matters, along with the area. I live on the third floor in an apartment, so there's no hope of installing a decent antenna. If you're too far outside a city you don't get reception. Of course if you are in the heart of the city, you still don't get reception. Fun times.
- coolcole93, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2Looks awesome.
Good ol' Europe :D - CrimsonBlur, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2You can't plug this in to your digital cable, it receives OTA broadcast TV, the guy mentions signal strength in the video. To plug it into your cable in the US would require CableCard support, and I can assure you that would never happen with this device.
- coheedcollapse, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2Using coaxial cable, my TV can pick up digital signals straight from the cable jack with an internal HD tuner. The box that they give you for "free" with your subscription does NOT pick up HD signal, you have to pay for an upgrade. I don't even use the box anymore for anything but OnDemand every once and a while.
- screwfanboys1, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2wait...Europe is the one that IS NOT getting the shaft???? Holy *****.
- BearinG, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Yeah but dont you pay another extra for TiVo service?
- mdaize, on 02/15/2008, -1/+3That menu system is SO good looking :|
I am more then impressed :D - adminmatt, on 02/15/2008, -4/+6wasn't Microsoft tooling around with an IPTV for the 360 too?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0GijX9SSjU - MrFisty, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2Sorry, my computer crashed mid-paste and now the direct link is screwy. Go to this page, first article at the top about PS3. Talks about PlayTV coming to Australia:
http://www.theage.com.au/technology/digital-life/ - DarkShroud, on 02/16/2008, -0/+1That's what I was thinking.
- etruscan, on 02/16/2008, -0/+1You're right - PlayTV will certainly round out the PS3 and turn it into one helluva media center option. What may make it even better is if we can get a good streaming option for LAN playback. I'm so used to XBMC, that the PS3 controls and codec support just pale in comparison. They simply don't stand up. With PlayTV, Blu-ray, and the integration of all this with the PSP, it will be the premiere media console. I'm really surprised that the XBMC folks don't take a more aggressive interest in stepping up to the plate with an XBMC port for the PS3... which would be the perfect finishing touch.
- Myonosken, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1End of 08/ Early 09
- neATL, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1Please explain this;
"I can plug my damn TV straight into the wall and get HD channels and they expect me to buy into that BS" - Myonosken, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1In the UK Apple TV failed to get any press or attention.
- Myonosken, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1The 360 having peaked wouldn't have a bearing on this would it? I seriously will buy a PS3 when they sort their act out in the UK (do I want a bastardised 40GB model? I'm buying the thing for a media hub so would rather get more than 40GB) but the 360 is declining in sales both because of better competition and the fact that its pretty much saturated its target audience.
- funkywood, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1I can watch all the UK channels while I'm off in Australia? Brilliant!! I'm getting one.
- neATL, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1Ahhh NO, the cable and dish companies are only doing what the FCC allows them to do. Direct your misinformed hate towards The Federal Communication Commission. I have Tivo DVR instead of Comcast ***** box.
- Managua8Green, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1hahaha, saturated its target audience..... now thats a claim.
