CNET: Report: PlayStation 3 price cut helping console recover
news.com — Even though the ps3 was blown away at the start due to its high price for its superior hardware, it now seems that because of its lower price the ps3 is recovering.

- martinaoe2, on 11/20/2007, -13/+3i certainly wouldn't have ha ha :D
- Snuff99, on 11/20/2007, -21/+8This is what most, including myself are waiting for. I'll be seriously tempted when it gets down to $299 but I can probably wait till it's in the $170 - $250 range. It may take awhile but I just got a PS2 two years ago, I can wait them out.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/20/2007, -8/+24You're willing to wait 5 - 7 more years just to save $150 ($2.50 - $1.78 a month)? You are one big cheap ass.
- Sraza, on 11/20/2007, -4/+15How many PS2 games can you buy for $150?
If you buy used you can get even more.
Buying smarter doesn't make you a cheap ass and just because a new gen is out doesn't make the old good games unplayable.- FredFredrickson, on 11/20/2007, -12/+9I still wouldn't consider the purchase of a PS3 a logical move. It needs more games, and more quality devs on board.
- djSyndrome, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2Every single major third party developer is 'on board'. What more do you want, Nintendo and MS to make games for the thing?
- Ajajadude, on 11/20/2007, -7/+5Buying old/used games from a "last-gen" console isn't the same as penny pinching when it comes to the latest hardware technology. You either can afford it or you can't, not "I'm going to wait until it's fallen to the current price of the PS2." If that's how you feel, then you're either a fanboy or a cheap ass.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/20/2007, -12/+9I still wouldn't consider the purchase of a PS3 a logical move. It needs more games, and more quality devs on board.
- Snuff99, on 11/20/2007, -10/+8Yeah, what he said, I waited to buy the PS2 but I can still play any game released and cheaper than you paid in most cases. Doesn't make me cheap, just make me patient. God of War 3 will be just as fun when it's release as it will 5 years after. Douche.
- Ajajadude, on 11/20/2007, -4/+6So, you finally getting around to buying a Delorean? 'Cause, the great thing about great games is playing them when they first come out. They begin to lose their luster when you spend 5 years reading about a game. That and they'll have already released at least a 4th game in the series (if they plan on going that far).
- Snuff99, on 11/20/2007, -7/+3Some of use have better ***** to do than sit around reading about and playing games all day.
- djSyndrome, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1I take it you're not one of those people?
- Sraza, on 11/20/2007, -4/+3Exactly what Snuff said. Just because you, Ajajadude, are immersed so much in the gaming media doesn't mean we all are. And that that takes the "luster" out of games doesn't apply to us all. Nor does it make us fanboys or cheap. New doesn't always mean better. Games do not have a shelf life (admittedly some do).
Delorean's are still cool and being sold, refurbished from old and new parts. HA! - BlackMask, on 11/21/2007, -1/+3hmm it sounds like you're either a momma/daddy's boy who still isn't legally able to find work to buy a $399 console, or a worthless illiterate completely useless social security leeching weed-addict SOB with no life no job and no respect. But I wish you all the best with your search in finding a $299 ps3. Here's a hint: come to NYC and join the NYC Street Cleaners Association in Manhattan (they are paying 5 dollars per hour now). since you have no skills, you can clean the streets for me and I may give you some tips. This way by 2020 you would gather your precious 299 dollars and get a ps3 while I would be playing ultra-realistic games on ps20.
- Ajajadude, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2I'm so immersed in gaming I use my 360 and PS3 for a grand total of about 5 hours a week, cumulative! It can take me a month to finish a game that would take many other gamers a day. I enjoy getting things that are new and haven't been beaten like a dead horse in every way manageable. Most people do. Odds are, the only way you're going to find a PS3 for less than $300 is in a couple of years and it's used. But a warning to the not-so-wise-but-quite-cheap: this generation of consoles are best purchased new.
And even if you buy a "refurbished" Delorean today, you'll probably spend more on it than you would if you went ahead and bought one when they were still being rolled off the assembly line.

- KingGoonie, on 11/20/2007, -29/+11Usually recovering means its not still being outsold world wide by its 2 competitors, and by a pretty damn large margin from one of them.... especially considering the pricecut means even more debt per system sold... I love how poeple love to think PS3 is now back on top after one week sales, the week of a price drop... but don't point out that the sales went back to normal after a spike during its last price drop... and that when 360 had a price drop that week its sales grew significantly, then went back to normal...
PS3 will go back to a definite 3rd weekly sales after the first week or two after price cut.- jesushitler, on 11/20/2007, -14/+7stop making sense.
- triplehelix, on 11/20/2007, -1/+6can i borrow your crystal ball before the next powerball drawing please?
- KingGoonie, on 11/20/2007, -6/+3Um, you do realize that this is all Crystal ball gazing... everything is until it happens or doesnt' happen... but I am basing my thoughts on factual events that happened recently.
- shinythingy, on 11/20/2007, -1/+6I love how people think they can predict the future
- Zamfir, on 11/20/2007, -24/+13It was doing just as well as the ***** in it's first year... so what exactly was the PS3 recovering from? It's just selling better at a lower price point, doesn't take a genius to figure that out.
- Peck3277, on 11/20/2007, -14/+7I like the way you call it the *****
- jesushitler, on 11/20/2007, -9/+4yeah, he's a funny *****.

- Ajajadude, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4Touche'
- ZenMojo, on 11/20/2007, -4/+4Actually, the Xbox and Xbox 360 sold just as well in their first years....

- straydreamer, on 11/20/2007, -5/+48Lower price + starting to get a game library worth looking at = people buying the system.
- thatsmyaibo, on 11/20/2007, -5/+18I just bought Uncharted yesterday...Holy *****. This game is one of the many that are making the PS3 worthwhile now.
- SeaBass22, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8Uncharted is unbelievably good. Not just the best PS3 game available, but it's climbing my list of top video games ever.
- milliamp, on 11/21/2007, -2/+2It looks similar to Tomb Raider in this trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfJiKs5Ei8o
Is it?- Zoids, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1No.

- milliamp, on 11/20/2007, -2/+2And with the the Wii's going for $400 on eBay they cost basically the same as the PS3.
- UwasaWaya, on 11/20/2007, -0/+5Funny how a decent library tends to be a good thing.
- Dustmuffins, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1SUPRISE!

- FredFredrickson, on 11/20/2007, -27/+11They can cut the price all they want - until it has a better range of games to play, you can count most people out. And before a bunch of people start throwing Lair and Resistance at me, we all know about these games, but they aren't exactly system-sellers. If they were, the PS3 wouldn't have to "recover" from anything to begin with.
- MASTERPL, on 11/20/2007, -6/+12Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted. Wtf are you blabbering about ms fanboy.
- UwasaWaya, on 11/20/2007, -11/+7Not to be an ass, but he does have a point. Sony borked the launch badly, and we're not going to see the system really pick up until Metal Gear and Final Fantasy...
Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted may be awesome, but they aren't system sellers. It may be the only reason that 360 has a better library is because it's been out longer, but it DOES have a better library, and people are going to see that.
To the average Joe, the 360 and the PS3 are practically the same thing, but the 360 is the cheaper option (especially with the cheapest PS3 not being backwards compatible) and that's why it's going to sell. The Wii has a foothold because it is the cheapest, it's the simplest, and it has interesting a new games. That's a big beacon there.
Sony will have its day in the sun, but not this year. It's early. Give it time, this will all even out and then EVERYONE will have games to love.- jacksons98, on 11/20/2007, -4/+8X360 is not a cheaper option. Everything and I mean everything costs extra with the x360. And even the little things cost more on X360. PS3 is by far cheaper than X360.
- Ajajadude, on 11/21/2007, -0/+6I bought the Premium 360 back in January and got the 60 GB PS3 a couple of months later. If I were to go out today and buy all the accessories for the 360 I got out of the box with the PS3, I'd end up spending more on the 360. It's just a fact, no fanboy *****. I like WiFi, I like rechargeable controllers (I don't like spending money on batteries unless it's for my piece of ***** camera), I like the option of being able to pop in a flash card to look at photos/videos/etc on the tv and transfer things over if I so desire, and I like the ability to cheaply and easily upgrade the storage space.
I think the 360 has a slight edge in a few categories (like the media player and how it plays nice with my iPod) and the overall look, feel, and usability of the online aspects. But, Sony has been slowly making improvements to both those areas and more and it's only a matter of time until they're equal in that regard (though, I think I'll still prefer the look of the 360 dashboard/blade setup...even though the PS3's setup is growing on me).
Game-wise, the PS3 IS catching up. They don't have nearly as many games, but the ability on [most] PS3's to play PS2 games helps make up for that in the short term and the overall quality of the PS3 games coming out is pretty damned good. I can see Sony pulling away, but that'll be due to the PS3's overall design and dedication to the long term. I have never once thought of the 360 as being a long term deal like the PS3 is supposed to be.

- active1x0, on 11/20/2007, -7/+0Resistance and Lair ***** sucked. What the ***** is wrong with you.
- brownr21, on 11/20/2007, -22/+8'Superior' is an opinion. 360's hardware is more extensible and easier to develop for, which IMO is superior.
- Ajajadude, on 11/20/2007, -6/+10Older, established technology is easier to work with. It's a fact of life. Thank god the multitude of industries in this world don't think sticking with the status quo is a good thing. Innovation is what brought us from the old school Ataris to what we have today.
- Christbait, on 11/20/2007, -5/+1Older? The PS3 has been holding the same hardware before release for as long as the 360 has held it's own. The PS3 is overestimated as a result of Sony propaganda, in terms of power, it has the blu-ray, that's it.
- Ajajadude, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3What? I'm talking about overall ability to design games for it. I don't pretend to know anything about developing games, but every article that I've read (and is relatively un-biased) says the same thing over and over, even when it's a bad review: the PS3's overall design has it built with the future in mind. More disc storage capacity, more "power", etc. And that's it's biggest downfall...everything it's built around is new to developers and Sony has done (until recently) an extremely terrible job at educating them.
The 360 is way ahead of the game, no pun intended, because Microsoft used the tried-and-true method in designing the hardware. But, in the long run, that could potentially limit what developers can do with the 360 in comparison to what developers might be able to do with the PS3. Hell, even the "rumors" of the DVD9 (and no guarantee of a HDD being present in every 360) holding back developers with the amount of high quality content they can put into a game should say something.

- jacksons98, on 11/20/2007, -6/+6@brownr21 That's what has to make X360 owners nervous. If it's so easy to work on X360 how come the best game they have graphically is Gears of War which is a year old? That makes you wonder; if the system is so easy to develop for and no other games have surpassed Gears in a year is X360 maxed out? Yet the PS3 is supposedly very difficult to work on yet graphically there are quite a few games already superior graphically Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Heavenly Sword, and Ratchet and Clank are good examples. It makes you wonder where X360 is going to be in 5 years and where PS3 is going to be in 5 years; you know once developers start learning the PS3 hardware.
- rusty123jimi, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Well... developers are started talking about how they are going to start working on the PS3 first, and then port it over to the 360. I think Haze is one of the first ones.
- Ajajadude, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Supposedly that's easier for them in the long run....if the keyboard warriors know what they're talking about, that is.
- rusty123jimi, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Well... developers are started talking about how they are going to start working on the PS3 first, and then port it over to the 360. I think Haze is one of the first ones.
- BabyWookie, on 11/20/2007, -3/+6The 360 a very-well designed and powerful gaming hardware. The 3 dual-thread CPU cores, unified memory architecture and the unified shaders on the GPU make it one hell of a flexible platform
- rusty123jimi, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Question is...which one does the fat man want to work on...I'm guessing the easier one, but that doesn't by any means its superior!
- Ajajadude, on 11/20/2007, -6/+10Older, established technology is easier to work with. It's a fact of life. Thank god the multitude of industries in this world don't think sticking with the status quo is a good thing. Innovation is what brought us from the old school Ataris to what we have today.
- merdiesel, on 11/20/2007, -2/+5I wouldn't have bought one without it.
- EvanVolm, on 11/20/2007, -5/+39So wait. You're telling that because the price of the PS3 was lowered.....it's actually helping it sell? No way!
- orion846, on 11/20/2007, -13/+4i like how none of these reports mention kmart stupidly sold 80gb's for 400 for a full week, this is mis-information that's going to lead to sony thinking they can keep the 80 at 500 for longer
- jacksons98, on 11/20/2007, -2/+4Who shops at Kmart?
- orion846, on 11/20/2007, -2/+3a lot of people last week, including myself
- Ajajadude, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1I thought K-Mart went out of business...
- djSyndrome, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1They were eaten by Sears.
- jacksons98, on 11/20/2007, -2/+4Who shops at Kmart?
- britkev1, on 11/20/2007, -1/+11Something they should have done from the start. A blow out specs system is nothing without the right price and catalog to go with it.
- airstrike, on 11/20/2007, -6/+8the ps3 is the nintendo 64 of today.
- h4ppydotcom, on 11/20/2007, -12/+5The PS3 is the Betamax of today.
- h4ppydotcom, on 11/21/2007, -3/+1Why am I getting dugg down for that?
The PS3 is made by Sony and (especially compared to the Wii) is higher quality, more expensive and selling in lower numbers. I think that's quite similar to Betamax in at least four ways!- djSyndrome, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2Because the PS3 has porn, while the Beta didn't.
- h4ppydotcom, on 11/21/2007, -3/+1Why am I getting dugg down for that?
- enforcerpsu, on 11/20/2007, -0/+5Cutting the price has been a good move by Sony. If they want to get into the competition instead of making up excuses they need to make more moves like this. Hell, if they keep this up I might even get one when a few of the bigger name titles are on it.
- ZenMojo, on 11/20/2007, -12/+9When the games come, we'll see how it fares. The PS3 was definitely designed for longevity, even on paper, and developers have finally gotten over the hump where games like Uncharted probably couldn't be made on the Xbox 360. As the gap increases and Sony starts getting some games in (while the 360 in its first year was where the PS3 is right now, one year is making a hell of a difference and Sony needs to get with the program...they're not underperforming, but they're a year behind in the race), the numbers will probably start rounding out.
$200-300 is the magic price point for a console (Nintendo figured that out straight out of the gate) and Sony needs to hit that range as soon as it can because it knows, from experience, that no matter what the other consoles are priced, it can rake in adopters at that price point no matter what everyone else's systems cost.- Ajajadude, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1The only reason that price range is right on the money still is because of the Wii. If the Wii had been more expensive, in the initial range of the 360, I think people would have taken a longer look at the PS3 and considered it a little more seriously since the price range between all 3 consoles would have been that much smaller.
- zoomsixx, on 11/20/2007, -12/+9Does Sony spread their own propaganda? I guess it would be called PR in this case. Come out with some good games for the PS3 and they just may even sell more units.
- TheXeno, on 11/20/2007, -3/+5You really have no idea what you're actually missing out on. People are too hypersensitive toward Sony. I've enjoyed some truly great games so far.
- plizard, on 11/20/2007, -6/+11HAHAHA wow someone at sony passed a econ 101 class
- iidestined, on 11/20/2007, -6/+4its like the infomercials that say that it costs $100 but you can have it for 3 payments of $19.99. plus S&H.
- cgruber, on 11/20/2007, -10/+6Selling them is better than sitting on the shelf but it sounds like Sony is still losing their ass one each one sold at that price.
- zantos420, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2you're actually right... when the ps3 first came out it cost sony over $1,ooo for each ps3 built and they were still losing money even selling it for $6oo. But hey, in the end Sony won the dvd wars and blu ray prevails (or so it appears) and getting the extra units off the shelf is just the obvious thing to do
- bram, on 11/20/2007, -6/+3they just need to make it work with a wiimote and they could raise the price.
- BinaryDelt, on 11/20/2007, -1/+9I was disappointed to hear Sony's "We never really cared anyway" attitude about the Hi-Def format war, but I'm beginning to realize that they're finally focusing on the Playstation 3 as a gaming console with a Blu-Ray player built in, not the other way around. Picture Sony focusing their attention on the Playstation 2 as a DVD player. Pretty dumb right? Keep it up Sony. Momentum leading up to Metal Gear and Final Fantasy may save this console.
They also forgot too soon that each console sold = support for Blu-Ray. How do you sell consoles? With great exclusive games. Win.- wsuBobby, on 11/23/2007, -0/+2FF7 is the only way to go. They need to re-release FF7 for PS3. All materia bitches!
- ps3iscrap, on 11/20/2007, -7/+4As long as Sony keeps focusing on selling their console instead of focusing on selling cool games for the console, they'll continue to play catch-up. Consumers are not going to get excited about subsidizing Sony's blu-ray technology. Its about the games, Sony.
- DatVillain83, on 11/20/2007, -2/+2if you planned on getting a PS3 before the price cut now you can use the spare 100$ to purchase a PS2 for Christmas and make that your hub for backed-up games. This completely circumvents the PS3 security without modification just a boot-disc, or mem32 card on PS2. Plus the $50 price differential between the 40GB PS3 & The Premium 360 can be considered a down payment for free online & the gateway for *sigh* Blu Ray movies you didn't own before.
now i play the waiting game....MGS4. it's all about the games after all!- rlg420, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Or you could shoot yourself in the head.
- BenKenobi88, on 11/20/2007, -3/+10What's with all the "PS3 making a comeback" articles? Ok, it's not doing horrible now...good for them. 5 or 6 topics in the past few days though? Eh...
- krische, on 11/21/2007, -2/+3I guess it rather minuscule compared to the thousands of 'PS3 fails' stories that have populated digg in the past year.
- slaystench, on 11/20/2007, -1/+5Must be nice getting paid money to state the obvious. I should do this!
- kingvik, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1The sun is bright, and water is wet, that'll be $50.
- redxninja, on 11/20/2007, -4/+3Naw...way too late into the game. If they are luck, they can get the ps3 to 3rd place.
- Sniper, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Who taught you how to count?
- krische, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Uh, they are already in third, so I don't think they can "get" there. They are trying to get to number 2, then eventually number. You know, like all companies do.
- la1337, on 11/20/2007, -1/+1Although Sony is selling more, it doesn't mean they're selling a lot.
- Christbait, on 11/20/2007, -3/+1***** buried. Yeah, OK, we get it; Sony are selling a couple more consoles, it's all gone to their heads and they're exaggerating so they can sell more.
- rusty123jimi, on 11/20/2007, -1/+1I think its pretty clear that sony will come in at a strong 3rd this holiday season, but in 2008, I think we mind be seeing a different Sony! :)
- TrojanGuy, on 11/20/2007, -1/+2Is there a "No *****, Sherlock" category on digg?
- krische, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3Yeah, these stories seem a little obvious, but I'll take them over the "Look pictures of PS3's on the shelf! It's so totally failing!" stories from a year ago.
- Sraza, on 11/21/2007, -0/+0I'd rather have neither. If you sit in a still and quiet room you can almost hear the people sucking the corporate *****.
