- MrSidnet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+46Just playing it on my Wii right now. I guess Im too cheap to buy Trauma Center.
- Sun.Surfin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+44It's a great flash game, but I have a serious problem with this site ripping it from the original creators without giving credit. For anybody curious and wanting to reward the true creators with the site hits, "Virtual Knee Surgery" is from http://www.edheads.org/activities/knee/index.htm
- polo3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39In game question: What functions should the drugs perform...
#1 Analgesic to kill pain
#2 Paralytic agent to keep the patient from moving
#3 Amnestic to make the patient forget the surgery.
It surprised me that number 3 was actually in use, as I thought that memory inhibiting with drugs (for modern surgery) was crossing over into a science fiction topic, so I did some digging:
Excerpt from first link Googled "how Amnestic drugs work"
"One particularly vexing question asked about the horrid possibility that awareness occurred "routinely" during anesthesia, but that no memory occurred. Patients would thus suffer, but have no recall." - mattcoady, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35Anyone else make his leg dance around every time you had the chance?
- bryant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35Heh.
Once it finishes the doctor just stands there imitating a fish.
Am I strange to find it amusing? - steven401, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I finished it but his mouth still keeps moving...
- mlw4428, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I'm ready to operate on anyone who needs knee surgery. ***** medical school...I played the flash game!
- riplikethat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18It's like sitting through America's Army 'tutorials'.. only this doesn't suck that much and you don't feel like killing yourself. Awesome.
- johanm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15stupid game. I WANNA START WITH THE DRILL!
- lozzd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Well, I can fit you in tomorrow now I've had my first lesson if you like! The guy said I did a good job...
- sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12They should add this into Madden 2008, then you would be able to perform virtual surgery on your virtual players virtually torn ACL, now thats indepth game play.
- jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Knee surgery $5, you bring supplies.
- dxmzan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Dammit, I think I learned something.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Damn, why can't I smash this guy's knee to pieces?
Too restricted. - ATH025, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Anyone else try to cut/stitch anything but the knee?
- gamecast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7indeed. reminds me of old kung fu movies
- berning, on 02/01/2009, -0/+6I'm lying on my couch with my leg up right now because I just had knee surgery today (arthroscopic). Interesting how this is the first story I see on digg.
- addisonj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5eek! just tried the hip replacement surgery.... the "pop" noise of dislocating the femur joint is just not right, oh yeah and some real surgery photos on it too
- AimlessAbyss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Fun game to play ONCE. After that it just gets old. I thought it was fairly educational as well. I never really knew how they did knee surgeries.
- IrritatedJones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Your grandma had a gender specific knee put in that is a product of Zimmer. However other companies have had the same items available for quite sometime. Zimmer is just smart about marketing and decided to improve upon some of their other designs and make what is now a gender specific knee. It not only help for males and females but for different ethnic backgrounds. Different races have characteristics in there knee structure. The gender specific knee your grandma had placed is an instance of that. She also had a minimally invasive incision made. I sale knee and hip implants for a living, and design medical instruments, and minimally invasive joint replacement is becoming more and more popular.
The game was pretty interesting and was fairly accurate. - CocaCola88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4so, I'am i visitor at the hospital and a doctor asks me to do a total knee replacement? how insane...
- flag8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I played this at my school because it's from one of the few unblocked sites. You should also try the virutal hip surgery
http://www.edheads.org/activities/hip/index.htm - macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah... this fake surgery just convinced me I'm not cut out to be a real surgeon.
- Bostonsox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well it was only an animation, but i know im never gonna be a surgeon now.
- hdar3415, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The timing for this submission is perfect for me. I'm having a total right knee replacement 2/5/07.
- BESTenemy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Weren't you disappointed when they introduced the medic class, you had to go through all the training and at the end, all it took to heal was holding down a button?!
- HolyCrapYo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's animation?
You mean Virtual Knee Surgery isn't real?! - adougherty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's neat, but far too limiting. The scalpel opening the knee only moves along the proper line, there's no way to slip up and cut any other than what you're supposed to cut. Not to mention moving the scalpel backwards undoes any cut you made.
- mtbnski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My patients survived both the knee and hip surgeries ...I feel I'm ready for virtual brain surgery!
- kirakun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"That game gets annoying cause I hate anime and they try to put a storyline and drama in it."
Funny. That's exactly why I prefer anime so much more than the Sunday morning cartoons. - olddirtycr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This made me squeamish too... Even though its just a cartoon :'(
- vemerge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As someone awaiting knee surgery, this made me uncomfortable. Although I'm having an ACL reconstruction and not a total replacement, still weak.
- GhostToon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I showed my dad and know he thinks it will be a good idea to show this to my grandma who is going to be having this operation done in a few months. I just think this is going to make her more uncomfortable.
- PopeOfDope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A class of anxiolytic drugs called Benzodiazepines do this. They are given to someone to reduce their anxiety before surgery. They work by enhancing the effects of a receptor called GABA A which normally inhibits synaptic transmission between nerves.
This means the patient will be less anxious before the surgery and also memory creation is impaired since that depends on neurones being active.
More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzodiazepine - fusionFactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Doesn't work.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My Grandma just had a second knee replacement done two weeks ago. They did a newer procedure this time where they went in from the side of the knee, causing much less trauma. She was walking around almost like normal within a few days, albeit still in a non-trivial amount of pain. They also used a knee designed specifically for females this time. The technique has improved significantly in just a few years.
- dcramps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wrote my name above the incision markings, but they disappeared. Lame
- RichGC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Although I would be pushed to call this a game, Dugg because it was educational without sending me to sleep.
- timlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it just me or is there kind of a high pitched noise in the game? I couldn't get past checking the patient's vitals because every time the doctor spoke, I would hear a really high pitch sound in the background.
It reminds me of the "teenager repellent" machines they use in London to disperse kids who loiter in front of shops. Adults can't hear it but kids can. I'm 25 but I guess my hearing is pretty good for my age.
Trust me, it's very annoying. - TomP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Played on this a while back when it got submitted, pretty good i guess
- flessa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When Im sawing the bone...it just makes me cringe.
- moondog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Definitely brings bad memories of ACL surgery...my knee is throbbing just thinking about it.
- taloncarde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have family about to have their knee replaced, and we have all gone through this to see what to expect for her surgery. Great idea, really neat.
- BESTenemy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Use tin cans, hardware drills, CD's for spacing and industrial cement for attaching components, or even better - crazy glue! Alcohol for anesthetics, duct tape for leg wrapping. Woo hoo! This is one great party!
- Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed about the 'pop' noise. It's just... wrong ^_^
- quoquo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the knee-tep I've witnessed as an intern involved a lot more butchering and 80's music.
- eyeofthefrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Take a look at this video that covers the whole knee replacement surgery: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6015881440502382308
It's pretty fascinating what they can do. - chexmex222, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah i drew a wiener on his calf and it didnt stay on either
i would be a horrible surgeon, i'd end up drawing on my patients like a drunk frat boy - Vironex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's more likely your speakers, because I have quite good hearing, and I heard nothing.
- justinjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had surgery one my feet back in August which involved the surgeons removing a large amount of excess bone from my feet. I know that it's something completely different, but the experience was fine for me, so I wouldn't worry about getting your surgery.
