- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24JENKINS! YOU ARE FIRED!
- HaltingPoint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Maybe now that he's getting some media attention he'll actually improve it....you know, adding some basic things like an ERASER. I love it except it is an absolute pain in the but to make detailed and complex tracks.
If he added some things like slider controls to control the variables like friction, how hard it is to toss the guy, gravity, etc, and added an eraser, this guy could very well get an offer from Nintendo to make this sucker for the DS where it would be a PERFECT fit. - attila, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15This is somewhat noteworthy to me because I've been a member of deviantART since it was created in 2000 and I worked closely with the artists there over that period of time. The link to the TIME article is courtesy deviantART's Director of Community Development, "Lolly" from his dA journal: http://lolly.deviantart.com/journal/10446606/#journal
Check out the game, Line Rider, here: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/40255643/ and the artists userpage at deviantART.com, here: http://fsk.deviantart.com/ - Smwbigboss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I love it when reporters can't think of anything to say, and they just make some weird thing up.
"Build an elaborate enough course and you'll feel like a little kid playing in the snow again, zooming downhill, popping up in the air, wiping out on a ramp jump a la Evel Knievel." - sl33stak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I play it every day at work, I hope my boss isn't cool enough to Digg......
- nexy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9or spamming digg to waste your time.
- overaction, on 07/14/2009, -1/+8Jenkins has become such a generic office name, I love it.
- Nukem945, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This game would be a lot more fun if there was a better level editor. One that would allow you to undo/erase previously drawn lines and maybe even modify existing lines. Also, it would be nice to have the ability to manupulate the time backwards and forwards, while editing, to make certain impossible jumps perfectly executable. Just a thought.
Wonderfully creative toy nontheless. Now if only it could be a homebrew DS game... - GrahamStw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"...~fsk who claims to be from the small European country of Slovenia..."
WTF? Is there some doubt about where fsk is from?
Does TIME, which claims to be an American magazine, know something we don't?
"Look at this game.."
"That's really cool. Where did you get it?"
"Oh someone claiming to be from Slovenia made it."
"Yeah right. As if anyone really lives in Slovenia..." - attila, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Correction, from the programmers own description, it's more of a 'toy' than straight out, game (as I suggested) with goals and 'bad guys'. Just have fun making it do whatever your creativity can come up with.
Back to the topic at hand, TIME featuring this deviantART submission: I feel this is good for deviantART and more importantly, the designer/programmer *fsk. His contribution brought TIME's attention to the community at large. Maybe there will be more exposure for the site as a result. - Kale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's also mirrored on games1.org, I think.
The grad student I share an office with has probably spent 6 or 7 hours playing it in the past week, I would guess. - Charron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Didn't "All Your Base" make it into TIME? Or am I imagining things?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12and I suppose I'll get down for saying I'm the only one who doesn't think it's that fun
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4maybe i just suck, but i can never get it to do anything interesting without crashing. and then i have to start over. maybe there should be a zoom tool and some predrawn curves for us n00bs :)
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The trick is using tons of straight lines and making a almost-circle. You left-click, then right-click bringing teh menu bar, then left click wherever you want the line to end. This works very well.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like to think it is these "limitations" that make it so appealing. And if you search YouTube for "Line Rider" you'll see those limitations haven't really stopped anyone from pulling off amazing "courses."
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's definitely addicting.. but it's also annoying when you're only using a laptop trackpad like me..
- vertice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've seen some stuff made with the new dev version.
It's definitely being improved a lot. =) - piwy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL way to misreport the dudes screen name TIME. ~ is just the DeviantArt notation for a non-subscriber.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol, gambit-style
- pr0cty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Haha go TIME. Surprised they published this. Its true though it has "amassed a worldwide cult following" :P
Fun game, been running the exe in linux works fine. Im still no good at creating loops - CherryTzors, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Finally, an internet fad makes it into TIME. I though this day would never come!
- ChillyEli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Found it at work, showed my assistant manager and we played for hours.
Now if only I could complete a proper loop....... - ator1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I couldn't get the right-click-straight-line to work until I realized that you have to move the mouse slightly at your end point before the line shows up. Now smooth hills are no longer a problem. Nice!
- perkonis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It did indeed. Go figure.
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,100525,00.html - radial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2congrats fsk
- SineNomen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very amusing, but the lack of a few key features(variable spped/gravity, eraser, a ruler to gauge distances) keep it from being as great as it can (will?) be. Yes, I know it's in Beta, which is why I don't mind the limitations, but I hope this get's updated. Soon.
- MrSidnet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5yea, wtf?
It was fun for about 10 minutes. Maybe 15. Definatly not something I could waste afternoons playing : - laserick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In "Eraser" Arnold Schwarzenegger turns ravenous alligators into instant luggage.
- rogerbannister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah! LineRider needs car chases, explosions, and babes. Like the James Bond movie, where he has a skiing gun battle. /sarcasm
- rogerbannister, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2fsk is having a Southpark Underpants Gnomes moment.
1) Make the hottest, most popular game/toy around and give it away for free.
2)....
3) Profit
Maybe he should have rethought step 1...doh! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey guys, click on the light blue circle to the right of creator's name.
- Kale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and LAZER BEAMS OMG OMG!!
- attila, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've spent the last 45 minutes or so just making a maze for it... I remember seeing something about this sort of 'line toy' awhile back, but a busy scheduled kept me from exploring it further. Funny that TIME decided to pick up the ball and run with it.
- NoNonsense, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Although you make mention of deviantART, and the Co-Founder, Angelo Sotira makes mention of deviantART in his blurb in Time, Time seems to think that Sotira is the lone founder of deviantART, and has failed to recognize that there is another founder, Scott Jarkoff, who is Co-Founder, which also makes Angelo Sotira a Co-Founder, not a Founder.
- nuno416, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is fun. i'm going to waste a lot of time on this one!
- ASD5A, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1according to fsk`s deviantart site a new version of linerider is going to be released at monday the 23th of october.
- lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1while i've never really used a DS b4, i would think this game would be perfect for that platform.. it would be great as a game for kids who just wanna idle away a few minutes while waiting at an airport or doctors office or something. but if this game got taken up sereously and improved alot, it could become an amazing and fun and very innovative game.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My terrible Arnie impersonation: FIRE ZA LAZAH! LHAEL! LHAL!
- attila, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're absolutely right, Scott "Jark" Jarkoff is a Co-Founder along with Angelo 'spyed' Sotira and Matthew 'matteo' Stephens. Jark initially designed the entire site and maintained it with help from others including myself until he was terminated in 2005.
- Sugars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1~fsk rules. He's made some amazing AVS as well.
- woody56292, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes I agree if this was a ds game I would be set.
I cannot wait until fsk releases a final version. I know many would paypal him a dollar or 50 cents for this masterpiece of a toy.
We play it almost daily as a stress reliever in 4th block at my school. ( computer class )
only think it needs is a eraser, and a pause button so you can make corrections as you watch. Also a button to automatically submit to youtube or make into a video would be nice. ( because many, like me, don't know how to do that )
this game is great!! - SineNomen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, some of the best videos i saw were using some kind of program, or newer version with more options, not the one posted above, which I why I think some more options would make it a lot better
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2At my highschool today (coincidentally), I was amazed when I came into a computer lab and everyone was playing variations of the game at lineflyer.com
One person was playing it and within 5 minutes everyone was addicted. Too bad the site doesn't even have the original sled version.. - BornRaisedInCSA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Found this on Entensity... slightly better than what I was able to come up with.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcu8ZdJ2dQo - GooseKirk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, I'll agree. This is just Rollercoaster Tycoon for the kids who ride the short bus. Interesting for a moment, but I can't imagine being entertained for hours.
- thebru, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0My mouses name is Jenkins!
And the other one is Dirk. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1"Not surprisingly, players are saving and sharing their rad Line Rider stunts via YouTube, digg and various video blogs"
They didn't even bother to capitalize "Digg"!
edit: I just realized digg is meant to be lower-cased. - evilevil, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0Ok, this is lame. The digg submitter posting the first two comments on the article...
