The "Gauss method," or Gauss Summation, is adding up the first and last integers in the sequence (thus a series) and multiplying the sum by the numbers of pairs of integers.
For example,
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
Add up first and last integers: 1+10=11
Multiply sum by number of pairs (5 pairs) : 11 * 5 = 55
This works because
10 + 1 = 11
9 + 2 = 11
8 + 3 = 11
7 + 4 = 11
6 + 5 = 11
The sum of integers from 1 to 100:
Add first and last integers: 1+100 = 101
Multiply by number of pairs (50) : 101 * 50 = 5050
Mathematician Friedrich Gauss (some say the best mathematician in history) used this method as a young student when a teacher punished the class by making them sum up the integers from 1 - 100. Gauss had the answer in a few seconds.
