- CrushThemTorg, on 07/25/2008, -6/+100Scrabulous was the best thing to happen to Scrabble in years.
- ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -3/+74I think Hasbro has a strong case.
- FatBird19, on 07/25/2008, -8/+51Hasbro, you don't SUE scrabulous! You HIRE them! They just turned your old board game into one of the most popular apps on facebook, and you're suing them for that!?! What you should have done is thank them, pay them, hire them, re-brand the app--all the marketing and R&D work is already done!
It's like, "Hey, we might have put Scrabble on the web some day in the future, so we're suing you for doing something we were too lazy or web-ignorant to do. Hey, now that we know the interest is there, we'll take this lawsuit money and build our own Facebook application. Lol, we're tools!" - Stumble02, on 07/25/2008, -2/+26No, geekchic does:
http://digg.com/business_finance/S_C_R_A_B_U_L_O_U ... - ZebZ, on 07/25/2008, -0/+16They have every legal right to protect their brand.
But forcing Scrabulous offline (which is the next step) won't win them many friends. Comparatively, their official Scrabble app is kludgy. - birch25, on 07/25/2008, -0/+14it's flashier, but i can;t type my words in(have to drag the tiles onto the board), which is really annoying.
- saobrien, on 07/25/2008, -0/+13Anyone tried the official Facebook Scrabble? How does it fare against Scrabulous?
- Typhoon2009, on 07/25/2008, -0/+12"Totally off topic" is putting it lightly, chief.
- zaklampert, on 07/25/2008, -0/+10they've got one, it's really bad.
- rossnyc, on 07/25/2008, -0/+9I think so too. After playing Scrabulous I went out and bought a Scrabble set so I could play it with my girlfriend at home.
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -5/+13You win the thread.
- SpaceDreamer, on 07/25/2008, -2/+10interesting comments on SlashDot about why Hasbro has a strong case...
but might also get counter-sued for copying some features from Scrabulous
http://games.slashdot.org/games/08/07/24/2128238.s ... - zaklampert, on 07/25/2008, -1/+9hasbro has a scrabble app for facebook, too, but no one uses it because it's ***** awful.
- Branchex, on 07/25/2008, -1/+8Don't hate the game, hate Hasbro.
- treas, on 07/26/2008, -1/+8Hasbro has taken the wrong road in this case. If you find a popular offshoot of your product, why not hire the people who made it? Obviously they're doing something right.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 07/26/2008, -1/+7Of course they do, but the problem isn't so much a strong case as much it is a wasted opportunity. Rather than sue Scrabulous, they should've worked out a way to transform it into the official Scrabble game which Hasbro owns. Instead, you have a bunch of diehard users who already hate you because you are forcing them to use your less superior product.
There are so many convenient things missing from the "official" Scrabble game that I can't even think about using it until it's fixed. Most importantly the current inability to type the words. (Dragging each tiles is so tedious.) - dfsjdkflasjk, on 07/26/2008, -0/+5Why not take the resources spent in developing their ***** "official version" and just buy Scrabulous at a discounted rate by threatening a lawsuit?
- strobe32, on 07/26/2008, -1/+6flashier does NOT equal better, especially in this case... simplicity wins, scrabulous is by far the better of the two.
- techblogLAT, on 07/26/2008, -4/+9It's true. I have no shame.
- nexah3, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4Scrabulous helped me survive my boring library job. It's a shame that they couldn't work out a deal.
- matu4251, on 07/25/2008, -0/+4well, if they had already struck a deal with EA to do the same thing they have a legitimate reason to be pissed.
- thescimitar, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3myspace = owned by newscorp.
fb = not owned by newscorp. - Orcmors, on 07/26/2008, -1/+4They tried. But the brothers that made Scrabulous demanded "multiple of several times" more than the estimated 10 million the four companies(EA, Hasbro, Mattel and RealNetworks) that own the rights to Scrabble are willing to pay.
Source: http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/3/the_scrabulous_ ... - inactive, on 07/25/2008, -3/+6Seems like the better option would have been to work with Facebook instead of being dicks about it.
- rossnyc, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3Yahoo has Literati -- same thing as scrabble, it's been around for a long time...Hasbro's cool with that? Yahoo pays royalties? The name is different enough?
- jemka, on 07/26/2008, -1/+4I should have concurred. So stupid!
- orangederange, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2I'm thinking Scrabulous has done more for Hasbro and for the classic game of scrabble, bringing it back for alot of people, and introducing it to millions of newcomers... minus points for Hasbro, they've already made billions from this game, they could've gone a more positive route perhaps a partnership than to sue like greedy $#@$#@...
- TimmyGUNZ, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2It's prettier, but that's it. It's annoying that you have to name your game, drag your tiles, and you can't see how much the word is worth until you place it. That was my favorite feature as it really makes the games go a lot quicker, especially if you're playing at work!
- pyper, on 07/25/2008, -2/+4I got a friend hooked on it and he went out and bought the board game, seems like Hasbro is doing just fine because of Facebook apps
- picalicious, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2argh, the scrabble beta app is trying WAY too hard
- mediaspree, on 07/26/2008, -1/+3I agree with you but Hasbro is just a corporation out to make money who owns a patent ( I assume) on the game of scrabble, not some altruistic puppy dog loving group of rosy cheeked individuals. This is capitalism, it breeds greed.
- inactive, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2so this is your "coming out of the closet"?
I feel bad that nobody is listening - dfsjdkflasjk, on 07/26/2008, -1/+2You've got to be kidding with the "tens of millions".
- SilenceIsFoo, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1In a related story, the creators of Scrabulous have launched a new app called Wordscraper. I haven't tried it, but it's supposedly the same interface, but allows you to make your own rules. You can read more here:
http://digg.com/playable_web_games/Scrabulous_Stri ... - mediaspree, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Does it have the same "extra word/lettter" score squares and tile values?
- orangederange, on 07/25/2008, -1/+2they did make their own game... it was really horrible... and in beta for only parts of the world.
- sephiroth965, on 07/26/2008, -1/+2@treas They tried actually. But the peiople who made scabulous wanted more for it than Hasbro was willing to pay.
- Dohko_Xar, on 07/26/2008, -1/+2Get used to it or get out!
- inactive, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1It's all just fun and games!
- Claude1971, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1I'm building up a good ***** right now. Then I'm going to find my Scrabble board and send Hasbro a nice present!
- ZebZ, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/3/the_scrabulous_ ...
"But our source says the brothers want a "multiple of several times that" $10 million, and the four corporations they're negotiating with think that's ridiculous."
OK, maybe "ten million" instead of "tens of millions" - MavRevMatt, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Instead of forcing them offline why don't they buy the company responsible or hire the developers? It'd make them look like a better company if nothing else.
- SLPatriot, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1it really was a great game , but the thing is its only not available in north america , anyway there are plenty of other games like fleet command , http://facebookfleetcommand.blogspot.com
- rossnyc, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Yea...I haven't played it in a couple years but it had I think the exact same board. Possibly it's a little different but I think it's the same.
- zspeed78, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Isnt this already old news.. and not to yell 'on digg AGAIN?'.. but in a case like this, its been a few months, havent we seen a resolution instead of just repeating what we knew already happened?
- inactive, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Good, now I can go and play scrabble on a board I don't own with myself...
- CrushThemTorg, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Did it sync up? If not, what's the point?
- DephexTwin, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Who is talking about Myspace, and who gives a crap if people like Facebook but don't like Myspace?
