- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+54I couldnt link everything except through this forum post, and I dont have a blog. Please forgive me. These ads dont get me money. I just didnt know how to link everything from the Freespace2 download to BTRL.

This is a stand alone full conversion of freespace2.
FS2 is NOT required to play this demo. - chief1983, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27Wtf? Just link to the mod's official site maybe? Or their own downloads page? Or their own forum post about the release? Why Sci Fi Forums? Whatever. Also, Playable Web Games? This should be under the Gaming News category probably, this one is for crap like bejeweled and other wastes of time.

And yes, it's completely standalone, although I do recommend playing FS2 as well. - Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Screens: (i think since site is down)

- Turey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21@ilyag: Compare: http://www.battlestarmod.com/screenshots/water_42700.jpg with some of the pictures on the BtRL Website and make that comment about "10 year-old game" again.
Our "Dinky little ships" are much prettier than yours.
That said, the more games, the better. - Bahimiron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Not a big BSG fan, but Freespace II was a great game and there just aren't any good space shooters out there anymore.
Dugg! - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Yeah, forgot to mention that it doesnt require the full version.
- headshotwi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I've been following the FS2 open source community for some time. FS2 was THE BEST space flight sim combat game EVER. Nothing since has compared. I was not directly involved in the development of this but it is awesome. There is also multiplayer dogfighting included. I highly encourage anyone who liked freespace and who is technical to get involved in this open source community. Here is a link to the site/forum for these developers: http://www.game-warden.com or http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3502
It has probably gone up in smoke because of digg though. Be patient. - Disease, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Direct download links

http://www.game-warden.com/bsg/downloads_public/BtRLDemo-Mac.torrent - Reese268, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Here is one with both Windows and Mac versions available:
http://www.gamershell.com/news/37552.html - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I thought people might want to know the background of how any why this game was developed.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"And you guys just took out 2/3rds of the FreeSpace Community (www.game-warden.com and www.hard-light.net). Good job."
You must be new here... - cleverhanz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This does very little to soften the blow of having to wait until next year for more episodes.
- Turey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Coming Soon. We're working on it.
@iricund: Mac release is done. See a couple of comments up. - edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6While HW2 does look pretty good, so does BTRL. It's not based on vanilla FS2, it uses the engine from the FS2open project, which includes massive graphical enhancements, among other things.
- okaroleo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Universal has no balls to do proper BSG sim or other kind of game. It will be months before they pass a resolution and send their Suits. By then the mod/game will be long past containment option.
- Sabin17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Freespace 2 is my pick for best PC game ever.
- ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah why is this? I can't believe the market for them just disappeared. I would love to see an updated TieFighter/Xwing game. Maybe something set between episodes 3 and 4. The last game in the series was X-wing Alliance, which came out in the late 90s IIRC (for the record, I don't count Jump to Lightspeed or the flight segments of SW Battlefront -- they really aren't the same).
Hell, they could even produce a Wii version with realistic (for a console) joystick-like control. - sokz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Is that HW2 mod good? I've been waiting for the FS2 mod for a while. It looks very good. Freespace 2 and Homeworld 2 are amongst my all time favourite games, what a good day! I thought I'd be bored on my day off.
- Jorenko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They're currently putting the finishing touches on the linux version, but if you like you can still get it and put it together yourself:
- Go to http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3502 when it is back up again; download the windows installer and the linux tarball linked from the first post
- run the windows installer with wine to get the files out of it (you may need to scrounge a couple of DLLs off of the 'net for this to work, pdl.dll and some other one. look at the last few error lines of wine's output to get the exact names. put them in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32)
- unpack the linux tarball. `./configure && make`
- copy code/fs2_open_r to the same directory that the windows version was installed to and run it from that directory
- if the game complains about your resolution, edit the .ini file in ~/.btrl/ and change the resolution to something more appropriate.
This worked for me, and it runs awesome. Rock on. - RainOfTerror, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Some more download mirrors
http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=41881 - herrshuster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I LOVED FREELANCER!!
i've played through it 3 times, found every object in the galaxy. DON"T say nasty things about that game - technobabble042, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Both the FS2 and HW2 mods are spectacular. But both have different issues and difficulties. The HW2 mod is really, really god damn fun in a LAN party - speaking from experience. Haven't played much of the FS2 mod, but it looks fantastic. I love 'em both, and I see no reason why we should be arguing about this.
- lostradamus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Love Freespace! Got it at the bargin bin at Costco. Talk about a game that was totally under appreciated.
- iricund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Linux is coming with the Mac release apparently.
- Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Homeworld 2 mod *is* pretty fun, but there's really no AI at all. The only way you get anything to attack you is by running right into their faces, and forget about allies, they don't do anything at all.
- jktstance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The story was incredible, I agree. I played through it a few times :P The fights between the Sathanas and the GTA frigates were friggin ridiculous.
*Runs off to install FS2 again* - okaroleo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's still #1 with me for all time. Storyline is worthy of good movie and ... i just can't say enough good things about this game.
- UnknownTarget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you want to PLAY MULTIPLAYER, you MUST open PORT 7808 on your ROUTER AND FIREWALL. Enjoy! :D
- kaliena, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hi from a regular at the BSG forum on SciFI.com I just thought it might amuse people to know that we now have over 2000 browser/guests on the forum. Normally there are at most 450 total users on the forum, including registered users and hidden users.
I feel better now, at least the website counters aren't broken... - WVUChrisF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Look 3 comments above you...
"Linux is coming with the Mac release apparently." - timbo1138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think this one got picked up when the other one didn't because the title contained the magical words "open source."
Still, it's getting publicity for BtRL, so there's no reason to complain. - acdcfanbill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Awesome, i've been waiting for this mod for a while, I'm glad it finally get some wider recognition. As a die hard Wing Commander fan, I have no qualms at all saying Freespace 2 was the best game I ever played.
- Wytefang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well if you want the original discs and not some hacked pirate copy, I'd say they're worth about $10-15 so far. :)
- jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Where's the linux version?
- sammboy125, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Official site down.
Linux or wine support? - WeSaluteYou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I uploaded it to my own website for you guys to direct download: http://neverexisted.com/BtRLDemoInstaller.exe
Enjoy - timf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So what now? Is it included in the mac release or is it still in the works?
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that's a feature.
- Stiverton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If I download it from the first link in the post:
"The game, Freespace2, with its open-source addons, can be downloaded here ."
will it include the mod? - Turey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@timf:
It's not done yet. We're working on it. - Turambar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well, thats decent, but look before you throw around the word 'dinky' in the future.
these are WIP shots of our new viper mk2 and Pegasus.

i'm afraid we come out on top this round.
try harder. - ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just finished the demo. This has the potential to be the best damn space sim out there. Yes, including commercial games.
That voice acting was just ridiculously fraking good, and the writing was impeccable. - jguevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Awesome! I can't wait to play this awesome game that looks awesome. It looks like awesome fun, this awesome game that is awesome.
Awesome! - UnknownTarget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unfortunately there was nothing we could do about the default controls. However, I recommend you rebind the thrust keys to WASD, the Glide key to Q or a key on your stick/mouse, and remap any other conflicts (none of them are major).
- Turambar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2be sure to join us on our IRC channel: #btrl on sorcery.net!
- malcolmreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sweet,all i need now is stargate worlds and I'm set.
- Protonz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just played it. What is up with the controls???
To thrust left & right you need to use "Shift + 1" and "Shift + 3"
To thrust up & down you need to use "Shift + +" and "Shift + Enter"
Looks like mouse movement is disabled by default, turn it on. Then in my case I had to invert the mouse (more fps style).
Explosions are beautiful. Voice acting is not bad. Game menus are hard to follow, somehow I got into battle, not 100% sure how I did that. -
