The whole thing works based on a binary tree algorithm. Basicaly, each node branches to two other nodes (yes/no). So in 20 yes/no questions, you can have up to 2^20 = 1 048 576 different objects defined. Since the system is adaptative, the tree makes branches stronger and pushes nodes further down the tree if necessary (this improves hits/misses ratio, because the questions tend to become more relevant to define each particular object).
Just so you have an idea of how powerful this is, with 33 yes/no questions you can rigidly catalogue every single person in the planet with a great excess, since 2^33 = 8 589 934 592 (and the world population is around 6.8 billion people.)
