telegraph.co.uk — Pegaso, her son, is the first offspring of an equine clone confirms, once again, that cloned animals can grow and reproduce normally, giving rise to healthy offspring.

- thcobbs, on 04/29/2008, -11/+5As long as we don't clone humans.... I've got no problems.
- laserblazer, on 04/29/2008, -3/+20We will clone humans - without you.
- TheThirdLevel, on 04/29/2008, -3/+6What exactly is the problem with cloning humans? I know it's not a good idea, given that we hardly can maintain our current population anyway, but what exactly about it is so repulsive or horrible to you guys?
- Witchboy, on 04/29/2008, -2/+12I'm in favor of cloning human organs, stem cell research and similar undertakings. But potentially legit concerns about human cloning might go as follows: Can a corporation tweak the DNA, patent it, and thus own a sub species of human being? Could mass production of cloned human beings create a "less valuable, less authentic" lower caste? Once cloning people was a common practice, would it be common to clone variants that weren't quite fully human for dangerous work or drudgery? I don't like Bush or the Religious Right, but there are ethical problems associated with many potential aspects of human cloning.
- lazyrussian, on 04/29/2008, -3/+5But that's a philosophical issue, not a religious one.
- bingobongony, on 04/29/2008, -4/+6And that is the point...all these idiots who assume that the only reason why people are against cloning humans are religious people are just that...idiots. Like abortion, cloning is NOT just a religious issue, and many people are against it for SCIENTIFIC reasons.

- MacEnvy, on 04/29/2008, -0/+4Those aren't "environmentalists". Those are luddites. There's very little that can be said about the concept of cloning itself from an environmental perspective as far as I can tell.
- carpespasm, on 04/29/2008, -2/+1except the "adding to the already unsustainable population" idea.
- MacEnvy, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Unless we're cloning huge armies of people just for the hell of it, I can't see this significantly affecting population growth.
- blast_flame, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2That's what I meant by 'less reasonable environmentalists'...

- tehjarvis, on 04/29/2008, -2/+3I can't have children. I want to clone myself to pass on my DNA (which is the whole striving point of our species).
While you suckers are passing on 50% of your genes, I'll be passing on 100% of mine.- carpespasm, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Which will be equally unable to pass your genes. That's not passing on your genes, it's delaying the inevitable.
- ChzPlz, on 04/29/2008, -1/+5Not unless the infertility is genetic. Getting yer nuts blown off by a grenade isn't usually hereditary.

- thespudmall, on 04/29/2008, -5/+6Why do people think animals clones are so different. They are the same as 'regular' animals. No different.
- tacroy, on 04/29/2008, -2/+4It could have something with clones inborn desire to devour the flesh of the living....wait, that zombies, but seriously zombie clones would be bad news.
- insanebrain, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3Why should we wanna clone zombies ?
- fr3ddie, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Its almost the same as artificial insemination.
- Bender1012, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1As I recall, Dolly the sheep died relatively young. Hardly "regular".
- relic180, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1One cloned sheep dying early is hardly a trend.
- rasmasyean, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1I believe they clone mice all the time. To make medicine by melting them down or whatever. Some are worth like a million dollars. But that hardly makes news because they are so small. Some are secret too I bet because they don't share the knowledge with potential competitors.
- relic180, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Dugg for making me visualize "melting down" mice.

- JayBabs, on 04/29/2008, -3/+2I might have missed this, but why do they have to castrate race horses? I had no clue this was common practice.
- EnjoyTheFact, on 04/29/2008, -0/+8I imagine it makes them calmer. Just a guess though.
- Rilmsty, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Its a huge difference, allows them to focus more on the race than on other, say thoughts on the mind. Makes them more manageable on the ground.
- relic180, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Because their huge genitals interfere with the aerodynamic qualities of the animal.

- Velvolver, on 04/29/2008, -1/+4Is this horse a direct copy of it's source? Personality and color scheme wise?
- rasmasyean, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0If it is raised the same if should be pretty similar.
- laserblazer, on 04/29/2008, -2/+2The Stepford Republicans make me wonder how old cloning really is.
- OffPiste, on 04/29/2008, -11/+3What the ***** is a foal? IS that a mispeling?
- decilios, on 04/29/2008, -0/+10foal is a baby horse, it's not a misspelling, and you spelled 'mispeling' wrong.
- cheez124, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2solid snake should have a kid.
- Kenzan, on 04/29/2008, -0/+4Ahh..excellent.
One step closer to having clones for spare body parts. - Velvolver, on 04/29/2008, -1/+9Taco Bell will now be supplied with twice as much meat.
- Vocifer, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3My friend Bob Sacamano eats horse all the time. He gets it from his butcher.
- cbartlett, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Does he have it with a Big Salad?
- Vocifer, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3My friend Bob Sacamano eats horse all the time. He gets it from his butcher.
- wildrice128, on 04/29/2008, -0/+6The inherent problem with cloning is that you are using telomerically old DNA as the basis for the new life form. Every time your cells divide, a small snipet of DNA is lost at the ends of the chromosome, but this is counteracted when you're young, as well as in your gametes, by telomerase. As you grow telomerase stops functioning, and your chromosomes being to lose their junk DNA padding. Even though the foal is young, his DNA is as old the adult horse, and will begin to cause him problems. If they intend to perpetually clone new horses from previous champions, they will run into problems sooner or later.
- madfrogurt, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5This foal is the offspring of the cloned animal, not the cloned animal itself. While it is possible the gametes of the parent horse had shortened end sequences, with the combination of the male gamete and the wonky way which oocytes do an epigenetic reset (perhaps this is when the telomers are elongated too?) I think this offspring has a good chance of avoiding premature aging.
- Velvolver, on 04/29/2008, -2/+1Just like solid snake!!!
- rasmasyean, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0Well that's one of the reasons for the experiment isn't it? To see if you can solve the problem. It's only a horse. Who cares it if dies prematurely as long as we get data.
- insanebrain, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2- " . .giving rise to healthy offspring."
That's what you say .. .seeing is believing. - Paulish, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1What about telomeres? Won't that cause the DNA to weaken over generations of cloning?
- insanebrain, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1yup. . read 2 posts above.
- weister42, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2So how far are we from being able to clone hot girls?
- leebo, on 04/29/2008, -0/+8Doesn't matter. you won't be able to get with the original or the clone.
- rasmasyean, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0Check with the Russian Mafia. They might be working on it.
- relic180, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2We can already clone hot girls. Just find an ugly girl, then pound a fifth of wild turkey.
POOF! Two hot girls.
- Rally603, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3What they don't tell you is that after about 4-5 generations of these foals, they'll start mutating and having half-horse-half-lizard babies that will, eventually, invent lazer weapons and take over the world.
That's just how cloning works.- minou99, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1It's true, it has already started in the back woods of Alaska.
- rasmasyean, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0It's about getting data and making the next experiment better. Every attempt uses previous knowledge until you solve the problem. Dolly died too. But it was a learning experience. It's only an animal. We eat them all the time. Who cares.
- Vocifer, on 04/29/2008, -1/+4Can't we just clone a human already? I'm getting restless.
- rasmasyean, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1No, because if it comes out wrong, it will set the technology back years from bad publicity. No one is going to really care if that horse dies tomorrow…other than a few activists and the investors who lost all that money.
- davidkeithjones, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Glad to see we are using cloning for something useful.....
- msmarc, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2I really want to clone my dog before she dies. She's a lot smaller than a horse, it should be no problem
- rasmasyean, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0There is a company that will do that for you. Forgot the name but I'm sure you can find it.
- cbartlett, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1And after you clone it, there is also one that will press your dead dog into a diamond.
- rasmasyean, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0Interesting you should think of that. With all the carbon-nanotube applications promissing a "bright future for all sorts of applications", I would imagine that carbon harvesting not too far-fetch of an idea.
