- geoff1210, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Bravely bold Sir Kitty
Rode forth from Sidewalks.
He was not afraid to die,
Oh brave Sir Kitty.
He was not at all afraid
To be killed in nasty ways.
Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Kitty.
He was not in the least bit scared
To be mashed into a pulp.
Or to have his eyes gouged out,
And his elbows broken.
To have his kneecaps split
And his body burned away,
And his limbs all hacked and mangled
Brave Sir Kitty.
His head smashed in
And his heart cut out
And his liver removed
And his bowls unplugged
And his nostrils raped
And his bottom burnt off
And his pen--

- mmm2010, on 04/08/2008, -42/+2Sorry for any cat lovers (actually not really), but I hate cats. Am i the only one who doesn't sympathize with this cat? Actually, this is probably my favorite cat, not because he's hurt, but because he's not a pussy (well... you know what i mean...) like most other cats. if we had more like this one i might respect cats more.
- grimward, on 04/08/2008, -1/+6Even though I hate cats, I can sympathize with one being hurt. Yes, they're ravenous self absorbed beasts who ***** indoors and will run away if you let them out, but they're still going to bleed if you hurt them.. and that is still cause for sympathy.
- IMADV8, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2Because all cats are exactly alike and share all the same negative traits. Obviously.

- LacY, on 04/08/2008, -1/+141I choose to believe that after the photographer took this picture, a nice person picked up the cat, took it to a vet & got him/her all fixed up, then took it home to his nice home, with plenty of other cats to play with, where it is living a warm and happy life. They just forgot to put the "and they all lived happily ever after" part in the caption.

They just forgot to put the "goes great with red wine" part in the caption.
- Vosona, on 04/08/2008, -0/+8That's not funny, my brother died that way.
- GreatWhiteShaky, on 04/08/2008, -7/+1Or maybe it was thrown into the back of a truck, taken to the pound, and put to sleep after spending months in a small, damp, rusty metal cage.

- grimward, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1Had this been real, there would have been a completely different pattern of blood spraying, plus there would have been more blood, and darker in tone. Furthermore, the skull fragments don't fracture that symmetrically either, I'm telling you, it would have been a way messier shot if it had been real.

- Nollykin, on 04/08/2008, -10/+1One would ASSUME, that if you clicked a digg link called "THE SADDEST PICTURE YOU'LL EVER SEE", you have NO right to go attacking the person who posted it. You're the one who CLICKED it. Therefore it's your fault that YOU ruined your day. Man, you're an Idiot. Who makes these people?
- aaaleman, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3You must have that strange condition in which people are unable to detect humor and sarcasm. I forget what it's called... Anyway, that, coupled with that other condition in which people are compulsively compelled to intermittently CAP words uncontrollably, makes for a terrible cocktail of afflictions.
But do not fret my friend. I have nothing but the utmost love and admiration for you. Be strong.- Nollykin, on 04/09/2008, -0/+0I was going to retort in one of those oh-so-witty internet comebacks, but instead, I'll just say:
"Touche". I re-read, and saw your use of the word "nasty", giving away that this is, in fact, a sarcastic comment. You're forgetting of course that this is the internet, and in fact, digg.com, where morons do actually fly off the handle in such a way at regular intervals- so you can forgive me for confusing you with such a moron. I stand corrected.

- brooklotzkar, on 04/08/2008, -13/+5OMG... haha I laughed my ass off. That was great. Its good that there is some hope in Digg, and its not being taken control by girls and their opinions (hence the recent diggs of kittys). I mean come the ***** on. - NathanielJ, on 04/08/2008, -2/+16"I feel really badly."?
Why do you "correct" people's English when you don't know English yourself? Badly is an adverb, so "I feel really badly" implies that the speaker does the act of "feeling" badly. As in they are not very good at feeling.
Get out.

(O_o)
- SuminderJi, on 04/08/2008, -0/+4I'm more for the point - if you can help it - help it.
Be it any type of animal... (that includes humans).
I've gone out of my way to throw a spider outside and make sure its not a 8 foot drop, to keeping a lost cat for 3 days and feeding it (though I dont like cats as pets) until the owner called / got him.
Just help, thats the point - we're not "sissy's" if we just go out and HELP those in NEED. Its a basic concept people, and if you see that as a sign of weakness, then you ARE whats wrong in this world.- johnomaz, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3Heh, I just did that. I had a kitten for 3 days, the thing ate like a king. Tuna and water or milk. Monday morning, it was taken to the animal shelter. Mind you, I'm very allergic to cats but it was taken care of.
- johnomaz, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3I don't like cats either, but that is a Kitten. Kittens are cute adn fuzzy. And the poor thing looks like its hurt. I'd pick it up and take it to the vet or something. Hope the peson who took the picture did that.

some people find humor in misery (other's misery to be more particular), but do not be lulled into thinking that your laughter is surfaced only by humor. anxiety, awkwardness, fear and despair can bring out laughter in people. its a way for them to cope with the situation. Kitten - walking, eyes open, looking fed, is near civilization
African Child - can't walk, hasn't eaten in weeks, is being watched by a vulture who is waiting for it to die alone because the photographer didn't give it much help
And you're going to tell me the Kitten is in a sadder situation?

- Stavrosian, on 04/08/2008, -1/+7Kevin Carter (the photographer) was widely criticised for not offering any help to the girl, although she did manage to walk on further unaided. He may have argued that his picture brought the suffering home to the world, and so was able to help millions of people in a much larger sense. Either way, he killed himself not long afterwards. This picture is pretty much the grimmest human story imaginable.
But never mind all that. Poor kitty!

He may have argued that his picture brought the suffering home to the world, and so was able to help millions of people in a much larger sense. Either way, he killed himself not long afterwards. This picture is pretty much the grimmest human story imaginable.

- Heembo, on 04/08/2008, -7/+5First you would need to boil the cat to remove the hair. Skin it like a deer or rabbit. Baste it with a little butter and season salt than bake it until it gets a golden brown. Make a gravy from the grease. Serve with mashed potatoes and peas.

- bossm4n, on 04/08/2008, -5/+197And if you see something like this in person, just stop and do something about it. Too many people ignore strays thinking someone else will do something. And please follow Bob Barkers advice and have your pets spayed and neutered to prevent the birth of so many unwanted cats and dogs. And if you want a pet, please don't buy one, adopt from a local shelter.

If you didnt know, thats the cats name...
Its name is 'ugly' and has a backstory, wonder if I can find it.
Pretty sad story.- purzzzell, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2here's one story about a cat named "Ugly" - seen it reproduced a couple other places in my search results, so I'm guessing this one's it:
http://www.chkittyclub.com/pages/stories/a_cat_nam ... - Ocelot13, on 04/08/2008, -4/+16Everyone in the apartment complex I lived in knew who Ugly was. Ugly was the resident tomcat. Ugly loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and, shall we say, love.
The combination of these things combined with a life spent outside had their effect on Ugly. To start with, he had only one eye and where the other should have been was a hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, his left foot appeared to have been badly broken at one time, and had healed at an unnatural angle, making him look like he was always turning the corner.
Ugly would have been a dark gray tabby, striped type, except for the sores covering his head, neck, and even his shoulders. Every time someone saw Ugly there was the same reaction. “That’s one UGLY cat !”
All the children were warned not to touch him, the adults threw rocks at him, hosed him down, squirted him when he tried to come in their homes, or shut his paws in the door when he would not leave. Ugly always had the same reaction.
If you turned the hose on him, he would stand there, getting soaked until you gave up and quit. If you threw things at him, he would curl his lanky body around your feet in forgiveness.
Whenever he spied children, he would come running, meowing frantically and bump his head against their hands, begging for their love.
If you ever picked him up he would immediately begin suckling on your shirt, earrings, whatever he could find.
One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbor’s dogs. They did not respond kindly, and Ugly was badly mauled, my mom got scared and said youre moving with your auntie and uncle in belair.I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I can say this cab is rareBut I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to Bel Air'I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8
And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'
I looked at my kingdom
I was finally there

NEDM, acronym for Not Even Doom Music, is a YTMND fad inspired in response to a YTMND site depicting animal cruelty. NEDM sites typically feature imagery of cats and/or chapstick, accompanied by the sound of the letters "N, E, D, M" (as spoken by a text-to-speech program), and music from Coburn's "We Interrupt This Programme (Jean Claude Ades remix)".

If you ever picked him up he would immediately begin suckling on your shirt, earrings, whatever he could find.
One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbor’s dogs. They did not respond kindly, and Ugly was badly mauled. I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was laying, it was apparent Ugly’s sad life was almost at an end.
As I picked him up and tried to carry him home, I could hear him wheezing and gasping, and could feel him struggling. It must be hurting him terribly, I thought.
Then I felt a familiar tugging, sucking sensation on my ear. Ugly, in so much pain, suffering and obviously dying, was trying to suckle my ear. I pulled him closer to me, and he bumped the palm of my hand with his head, then he turned his one golden eye towards me, and I could hear the distinct sound of purring.
Even in the greatest pain, that ugly battled scarred cat was asking only for a little affection, perhaps some compassion. At that moment I thought Ugly was the most beautiful, loving creature I had ever seen. Never once did he try to bite or scratch me, try to get away from me, or struggle in any way. Ugly just looked up at me completely trusting in me to relieve his pain.
Ugly died in my arms before I could get inside, but I sat and held him for a long time afterwards, thinking about how one scarred, deformed little stray could so alter my opinion about what it means to have true pureness of spirit, to love so totally and truly.
Ugly taught me more about giving and compassion than a thousand books, lectures, or talk show specials ever could, and for that I will always be thankful. He had been scarred on the outside, but I was scarred on the inside, and it was time for me to move on and learn to love truly and deeply. To give my total to those I cared for.
Many people want to be richer, more successful, well liked, beautiful, but for me…I will always try to be Ugly.- micahned, on 04/08/2008, -17/+84wtf

- Jeffler, on 04/08/2008, -0/+12Even if this isn't yours (which it isn't) I still cried.
- glittler, on 04/08/2008, -0/+23damn, stuff like this and the ASPCA commercial always makes me cry. Why is it that that I can watch those shows about children in Africa dying of starvation and aids and have it not affect me in the least but I see something like this or something about animals and instantly tear up

i was thinking the exact same thing. we see all that stuff abt Dafur and genocide and starvation and stuff, and we're like, meh.. and it doesnt really bother us... why is it like that??? is it b/c we feel that animals are more lovable.. and is that b/c we see them as lower to us than a fellow human being?? is it more of a pity/sympathy thing??? but then why dont we feel that for the starving, bone-thin kids in all those pictures???
instantly tear up is right... but why i, or the general public, doesnt instantly tear up at that site is something i really want the answer to.- shrtkrimper, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2i know what you mean... i think i get like that cause pets- cats- dogs can't get a job or better themselves. Where humans- kids or adults- have the ability to get a job or seek help. Animals don't have that benfit nor a voice to be heard
- xz9925, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1agreed.
- megarobotguy, on 04/08/2008, -0/+4I would disagree we are talking about people living in the poorest of the poor. People that are barely living on cups worth of rice. There are no jobs for them. There are no opportunities for them. I think the reality is that we are so immune mentally to the problems of the world it becomes very overwhelming to see it everyday. I use to cry for these people now I can only cope by turning the channel. One day I would like to give my time rather than money to help these people.
- mctwists, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1that was very well said. I too would like to give my time.. one day...
- Jektal, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2I'd argue it's more that we know intimately the devil (figuratively) inside each human. We've seen it all around us, and we know it within ourselves. We don't see that in animals, especially domesticated ones like house/tom cats.
- mctwists, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1wow, interesting point of view - thats definitely valid.
- eandresen, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2It's not a perfect answer, but this little snarky article makes some valid points

- darkciti2, on 04/08/2008, -0/+7It's probably because humans are on an equal playing field. As the top feeder, we see other humans mostly as competition (even if there's no competition).
Animals are sub-human, so we should take care of them. If we don't, the next species beyond us won't return the favor. If we're not careful, one day we might be that kitten. - Aitese, on 04/08/2008, -2/+1Because you don't like black people?
- RussellDovey, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3Because we suck.
- ohmahgawd, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5The reason for this paradox is how we place our pity, compassion, and love. For animals in peril, it's more pity than compassion and love, as we tend to feel above them in some way, and due to this believe they need our help, but even with this it is enough to tug at our emotions. For humans, we lack pity because they are humans like us, and we lack compassion and love because we've become cynical about humanity, and tend to want to only place these feelings to those we are personally close to, like family members, lovers, or our children. This is why we can see starving children in Africa and not care, or hear about a violent murder, and just not be bothered too much.
Of course not everyone is like this, but many are. It's easy to get desensitized and cynical, and close yourself off from caring about only those you're already very close to.
Of course to those who can so easily go to this picture that 'it's just a cat', they likely lack all compassion, all love, and even something as trivial and common as pity, and truly only care about themselves. You should feel sorry for this person.- mctwists, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2ur reply was gold... excellent.. just the answer i was looking for!
- neodigger, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2I find it very difficulty to love a species that causes so much pain and suffering to its own kind, just for the pleasure of it. When I see someone in a horrible situation, I think "That sucks, but for all I know, that guy is the next Hitler". Then I realize that even if I wanted to help, I'm so poor myself, that I couldn't even do much for them.
- mikemgmve, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1Simply put - Animal's are always innocent. We're not most of the time.
- Cyborg326, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Part of the problem is that the media shelters us from a lot of the human suffering that goes on. When it's animals it's ok to show it but if it's people then it gets censored. I bet a lot more people would make a big deal if they saw raw, unedited footage from any of the humanitarian crisises (sp?) going on in the world. Most Americans in their sheltered ignorance won't acknowledge that we do the same horrible things to each other that we do to pets or other animals.

- Tyrghast, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Ouch... what did i ever do to you?
- Zaetha, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1I mean, "man".
- joel8x, on 04/08/2008, -11/+4Hey stupid, you're not supposed to read those corny junk email's your Aunt sends you even though you tried to explain to her that they are annoying, let alone post them on a public forum. Why not contribute something original. Besides, cats are all evil and only care about themselves and the alien planet they came from.
:-p - foolishwolf, on 04/09/2008, -1/+21This short story + the picture = the perfect recipe for a complete breakdown.
Well done and thanks *****. Now I can't finish my research paper because I'm too busy CRYING- Ozherbie, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2I find it funny that a user with the name if BRUTALITY claims to be crying over a pic of a kitten and the story of a cat dying.
- eightyk88, on 04/08/2008, -3/+4reminds me of "Slut cat" her name what Slut Kitty, my friends moved into the apartment where she used to live, says the neighbors. well slut kitty would go door to door in the complex/gated community and hang out with everyone. there was always food on some ones stoop for her and she always came around to get high then was off again.
- cyranthus, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2i think every apartment complex has a resident stray cat... or cats.

- ghermann4, on 04/08/2008, -0/+0I keep seeing this copied and pasted in places like Fark.com over the years. I've also seen it on many Geocities and angelfire pages in the past without attributions to any particular author. I think it's now become an internet/email circular with no pressing need to find the original writer as it gets passed along, possibly even modified. Just one of those things public tales I guess.

- cello, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1That was a very nice story. It's sad, but full of hope.
It's important to love loving. This poor cat just wanted to love and be loved, and you (or whoever) gave him a beautiful last few minutes - it's all he really wanted. It's all any of us really want I guess, to love and to be loved.
Poor kitty. I hope there's a happy kitty after life that he can be enjoying right now. - AnnikaAmethyst, on 04/08/2008, -0/+0About the purring....cats purr for many reasons. The cat wasn't purring because it was happy it was being payed attention to while dying. It was purring because it was in pain.
- MacGyver2000, on 04/09/2008, -0/+0Reading that story, I could have sworn I felt my cold, lifeless Republican heart suddenly return to life for just a couple of beats. Then it was gone. Sad face. =/
- FriendofUsers, on 04/09/2008, -0/+0Great to see a story for a comment. And this one was appropriate. I couldn't help but have a tear. This goes to show the original author, Karen Stone, did a well-written touching story. Please though, everyone, always give credit to original authors if you're going to use other's works.
