- fadeout, on 07/20/2009, -63/+404I know this may come as a shock, but working class people living on islands need to live off the sea.
That means eating whatever they can catch. Hence, dead whales.
If you can't handle it, don't look. Think the floor of the slaughter house your food comes from looks any better? - googooly, on 07/20/2009, -24/+357DAMN HUMANS YOU SCARY !
- Devine122, on 07/20/2009, -3/+238This is an annual event in the Faroe Islands.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whaling_in_the_Faroe_ ... - rocknog, on 07/20/2009, -27/+179I don't understand the fuss. No one complains about killing cows to make hamburgers (vegetarians/PETA excluded), but for some reason whales are different. It's like, people have no qualms about eating meat unless they're made to think about where that meat comes from. Now, if these particular whales were endangered, that would be a different story, but I don't see how in general, killing a whale is somehow more wrong than killing any other animal for food.
- Zippo, on 07/20/2009, -11/+118It's not pretty, but humans eat meat... I guarantee the slaughterhouse that produced your burger wasn't pretty either.
- fadeout, on 07/20/2009, -34/+136They are killing pilot whales by dragging them onto shore and cutting to their spinal chords. They aren't doing it for fun, it's for food. They live on tiny islands and depend on the sea, as have their ancestors, for a millennium. Your pampered attitude is absurd. Would you rather they import soy and charge it to their credit cards?
- freakish_beast, on 07/20/2009, -23/+120Gross but thats how you get meat on the plate.
- chadsmith729, on 07/20/2009, -4/+82Well with the amount of Nike jackets in the crowd ... were they a sponsor?
These comments suck, including mine. - AmyVernon, on 07/20/2009, -8/+78Actually, in doing a little research about the whale slaughter on the Faroe Islands, the chief medical officer for the Faroes has declared the whale meat unfit for human consumption because of the level of toxins in them. They continue doing it for the cultural aspects, just b/c they've been doing it for hundreds of years.
- jbarket, on 07/20/2009, -8/+77As someone who lives in one of the largest soy bean producing states in the US... yeah that'd be nice, hahaha.
- alxnfl, on 07/20/2009, -71/+137just sick.
- ShitStainedBall, on 07/20/2009, -3/+67"Thats our problem in our country. We only want to save the cute animals."
"Hi what are you?"
"I'm an otter."
"And what do you do?
"I swim around the ocean and do cute little human things with my hands."
"You're free to go."
"And what are you?"
"I'm a cow."
"Get on the ***** truck pal!"
-Denis Leary - norwegianlegion, on 07/20/2009, -24/+87Does anyone know the context behind this picture? Still, this is just the sort of image that can turn public opinion. I mean, jesus, it looks worse than Normandy on D-Day; just imagine if we could see the faces of the slaughtered animals beneath the ocean stained in their own blood...
- AndrewSnook, on 07/20/2009, -4/+61Funny, Last time I checked we shot them first then skinned them when they were DEAD. It's not the 1800's anymore.
- angrytortilla, on 07/20/2009, -30/+80If you actually read about the Faroes then you'll know they have ample food supply that makes the whale hunt completely unnecessary. No, this isn't working class people trying to survive, this is a barbaric "tradition" that needlessly continues.
- KMartSheriff, on 07/20/2009, -10/+56Slaughtering cows isn't?

- buzaman, on 07/20/2009, -1/+42I now know that the Faroe Islands have a primer soccer league and that Havnar Bóltfelag has won the title 19 times. Damn you Wikipedia death spiral!
- TnTBass, on 07/20/2009, -11/+51It is quite obvious from the comments that some people think their food comes from a supermarket. For them, ignorance is bliss.
- Zippo, on 07/20/2009, -4/+43They're not particularly at risk and only a few hundred are killed on the Faroe Islands each year. They're not exactly going out and killing these whales by the thousands on a daily basis.
- Tanktunker, on 07/20/2009, -10/+46***** PETA.
- bmson, on 07/20/2009, -14/+48It's called Grindadráp and this is done in Faroe Islands.
This has been done for many many years and there is nothing wrong about it.
This is much more natural than growing featherless chickens and debeaking them, in US chicken farms.
It's not beautiful but it's nature.

- eviscerator, on 07/20/2009, -32/+60Somebody stated earlier in these comments that they kill them immediately when they get them to shore. And as you say - these people do need to eat. From what I can gather, this is a lot better than Canadians clubbing seals and skinning them alive.
- namochan, on 07/20/2009, -1/+29Single whale with hundreds of fins.
- Beveridge89, on 07/20/2009, -5/+31The environmental impact of cattle isn't.
- jeremec, on 07/20/2009, -5/+29Looks worse than Normandy? Somewhere around 5k young men died that day... Massacred due to oversights and unexpected weather conditions.
You may not realize this, but the Germans weren't gunning us down to put food on the table and oil in the lamps. - slapded, on 07/20/2009, -6/+29……………………..„--~~""”¯¯””~~-„

- lettruthout, on 07/20/2009, -3/+25from Wikipedia...
"As of the end of November 2008 the chief medical officers of the Faroe Islands have recommended that pilot whales no longer be considered fit for human consumption because of the levels of toxins in the whales." - rocknog, on 07/20/2009, -3/+24Well that's what I'm saying. Unless their activities are somehow a threat to the survival of the species, I don't see the problem. And that's the first thing I noticed in all the backlash - no statement that this was a threat to the species
- inactive, on 07/20/2009, -7/+27Those two pointy teeth in your mouth that were developed over millions of years? Try using them.
- Arsi, on 07/20/2009, -13/+32"Most part of traditional Faroese food consists of meat. Because of the harsh Faroese climate, grain and vegetables have not been able to grow very well. During the winter months the Faroe Islanders´ only option was to mostly eat salted or dried food (this includes meat, pilot whale meat, seabirds and fish). This means that over the centuries, the pilot whale has been an important source of food and vitamins to the isolated population on the North Atlantic archipelago.
The pilot whale meat and blubber is stored, prepared and eaten in the Faroese households. This also means that meat is not available at supermarkets. Although the Faroe Island's main export is fish, this does not include pilot whale meat or blubber. An annual catch of 956 pilot whales[12] (1990–1999) is roughly equivalent to 500 tonnes of meat and blubber, some 30% of all meat produced locally in the Faroe Islands."
from the Wikipedia article. So pretty much what you people are saying is these people should starve and leave their main food source alone because you dont like seeing dead animals? Shake your head. - JJ2K1, on 07/20/2009, -11/+30Oh you fought on D-Day? I salute you sir!
- Andrwmorph, on 07/20/2009, -1/+19FYI, if chickens in that setting are not debeaked they would all kill eachother.
- samoan27, on 07/20/2009, -2/+20It's their own fault for being delicious.
- JAVandiver, on 07/20/2009, -4/+22@AmyVernon -- People still eat the whale meat, it is just not recommended for human consumption. I can recollect on many occasions when the the USDA has stated that several types of fish were not fit for human consumption in polluted ares of this country, but that did not stop people from eating it.
- Jsmuli2, on 07/20/2009, -0/+17You didn't know what the hell was that?
- somnus, on 07/20/2009, -0/+17LOL why would you make things more difficult and skin them alive? They'd be all rolling around, pretty small target.
- geodebug, on 07/20/2009, -10/+26As long as they aren't over-fishing those whales I don't care. Food is food.
- dezweber, on 07/20/2009, -8/+24Well, I'm positive that there's no killing or blood involved when we slaughter cows, pigs, and chickens for food. Meat is yum-yum good!
- Lane, on 07/20/2009, -10/+26Every single cow in north america has been brought over to be consumed. If we didn't eat them there wouldn't be any at all here.
