- llewner, on 09/02/2008, -0/+5I have goldfish and rats and I am going to have to call ***** on this one. My rats build nests, store food, respond to their names and can play games. My goldfish just swim to the top when they are hungry (which is always) and occasionally follow the human to the other side of the tank.

- Wakkyweed, on 09/02/2008, -1/+6Great, now I'm going to feel guilty every time I go fishing. Next thing you know the scientists will publish a paper that proves that fish have three times as many pain receptors in their mouths as we do, so using a fish hook would be totally inhumane.
- Smokeydabear, on 09/02/2008, -1/+6I have two Walmart goldfish in a 10 gallon tank. They seem to like each other a lot, and often chase each other around the tank. If I am in the room at the tank is in, and I move toward the tank, they stop and "look" at me like I'm going to feed them or something. When I do venture toward the tank they stop whatever they are doing, and swim around, like they are excited or something. I don't know if they are as smart as rats, but they are smart little guys.

All that 2 second memory stuff is bollocks. - MisterEX, on 09/02/2008, -1/+4I think the article talks about shared learning when used in evading a predator. Do you have a whole school of goldfish with several predators in your fish bowl?
A lone goldfish would not have such "shared" learning traits because it is probably farmed with a bunch of other goldfish with zero predators to worry about. - DWNTWNJB, on 09/01/2008, -5/+8I have my doubts about this. Goldfish are capable of learned behavior, but I doubt very much they're as smart as rats. I've kept goldfish, they're not that smart.

'nuff said. - colonels1020, on 09/02/2008, -0/+2I've been wondering if fish were as smart as rats for a while now. Thanks for finally answering my question!

- ewc80, on 09/02/2008, -0/+2I think that it is actually kind of obvious to anyone who owns cichlids or other predatory fish that they have at least some basic thought process. Due to the placement of my cichlid tank, I almost always feed the tank from the far left side. The fish have this figured out now. Even if I approach the tank from the far right side they will swim to the left side of the tank, knowing that it is the most likely place that I will drop the food.
On the other hand I once had a pet rat that memorized a rather complex maze after only three runs through it.

- askantik, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1A human toddler would likely do the same thing, and I think we can all agree he's more intelligent than either a fish or a rat, at least by our own definitions of intelligence.

Not that I think fish need protecting or anything. Me, I'm firmly in the omnivore camp, but it does irritate me when I hear the above. They'd then have to leave the fish or get back to eating the hoofed horned and feathered or leaving both. Either way stop being so forking pretentious.
Rant off - ClevelandBrown, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1I'm all for studies that are interesting and give us new insight, but sometimes I'm in disbelief as to the retardedness of some so-called 'studies.' I remember seeing one on daily planet, where they did a study to determine whether or not people looked like their pets... truly wtf. That means not only did people devote their time to this *****, but who knows how much money was spent. And you know what the conclusion was? Sometimes people look like their pets, sometimes they do not.

- askantik, on 09/02/2008, -1/+2Either way, that demonstrates that a goldfish has longer than a 3 second memory, doesn't it?
Anyhow, I don't really see how they can know what is more intelligent or has good memory. For one, we can't get inside the heads of these animals. Secondly, we are judging them by human standards. How exactly do you prove (or *****, for that matter, even hypothesize) that a goldfish has a 3 second memory span??? - jmhyer51, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1And yet they'll still bite a piece of food with a hook through it.
- Halsfield, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1if you guys read the original poster's comment, he said they WERE capable of learned behavior, he said they WERE NOT as smart as rats, and i think thats pretty easy to agree with. Rats are extremely intelligent, capable of true problem solving , not just learned behaviors.
I saw a video of a japanese man with 4 or so goldfish that he taught to swim in sync with the others using hand motions to control them(and i do not mean they just followed his fingers) -
