Most likely you just grew up in a larger city or in an environment where hunting isn't very big. Overall you're taking it a bit too seriously.... It's not as if every kid in the US gets hunting permits and is allowed to have firearms. In fact I'd guess at *least* 90% of the children in the US have never gone hunting in their lives.

Go for the tougher varieties (extra tough, if you can find it), and it's actually quite good when baked or fried.

        This is coming from a non-vegetarian too - I like meat, but tofu isn't bad if it's done well.

It can be hard for Europeans (I'm assuming) to understand, but you have to keep in mind that it wasn't that many generations ago that our ancestors were settlers trying to tame a new land. Guns kept you safe, they kept you fed, and they kept you alive. Parents taught their children to hunt early, because their livelihood depended on it. That kind of thing is hard to let go of in a few generations, even if it's not as relevant today.

      Its not uncommon for kids as young as 12 to have a small gun of their own (a 22 or similar) when they go on family camping/hunting trips. Getting a shotgun at 16/18/(whatever the state law dictates asthe min age) is fairly normal in a alot of places too.

      This is less true in the bigger cities and suburbs of course, but a lot of America is still small towns and countryside.

What SpaceMonkeyZero says below is very true, the earlier you teach a kid how to handle a friearm, the safer they are. Most kids around here take hunting courses. We always got to read the newspaper for Social Studies class, and they always advertised the "Public Auction" on the back. One of my friends joked about hoe it would be funny if it said "Pubic Auction". The very next week it had that very misprint. It was more odd than funny, but being elementary school boy's we of course got stares from the teacher by laughing out loud.
