- str3ama, on 04/11/2008, -0/+7I saw a great documentary on them, he's not defending his food - he's actually trying to flirt or court the women (called peahens). It looks like he's being aggressive, but he's actually trying to close in on them and show off his plumage. The fascinating thing about them is that they can fly, well not so much fly as glide. They somehow get on to the tops of trees, and then they jump off them but instead of falling straight down, they manage to glide (their plumage is kept closed). In the documentary they show that in nature their tail is actually a hindrance and the more elegant and full their plumage is - the more of risk they are to predators like Tigers. The greater the plumage in color and design, the more attractive they are alleged to be to peahens, which interestingly enough are more drab and subdued - a dull browinsh color.
