Dolphins Finally Invent The Wheel watch!
metacafe.com — When you spend your life in the water, I guess you tend to develop a good intuition for its subtleties. Dolphins have been observed to create bubble rings by exhaling air carefully in the middle of the vortices caused by the motion of their fins through the water, among other techniques.

If you have any other version than 2008.1.20, IM me.- ricree, on 01/20/2008, -1/+57Well, I'm supposed to get version 2008.1.21 tomorrow, so I'll let you know how it goes.

- drgmdp, on 01/20/2008, -1/+17i don't see dolphins playing with wheel shaped air bubbles daily, do you?
- bbardlbradd, on 01/20/2008, -10/+3No, I don't, but there's more to appreciate in life than... dolphin bubbles. Still think it's cool tho.
- hobbitboy2, on 01/21/2008, -0/+8anyone wanna join my clan?
- Murdats, on 01/21/2008, -1/+11I used to play life, but I got sick of the constant popups, noobs and lack of ignore list.

- blaze03, on 01/20/2008, -0/+57I've watched the video a few times already, and in it the dolphins:
- create bubble rings by leaping to the surface and releasing the air somehow
- create smaller rings from larger ones, sometimes successively off the same ring, by hitting it in the right spot at the right time
- spin the rings by twirling themselves around it
- swim through the rings once they're big enough
- "chomp" the smaller rings once they're done with it
I didn't even know you could make bubble rings, much less bubble rings that can somehow grow bigger. It's just ***** incredible how intelligent these creatures are. I wonder if in a few hundred years we'll be able to communicate with them in their own language.
Also, the fact that they're mammals makes me wonder where in the common ancestry they broke off to live in the water.- ydt89, on 01/20/2008, -0/+31"I wonder if in a few hundred years we'll be able to communicate with them in their own language."

- dezmo, on 01/20/2008, -8/+3they aren't creating smaller rings from bigger ones, they just swim up to it and blow another one, it does look very cool.

- GuyHersh, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2I just found an article about this. Apparently its not something new that dolphins do.
http://www.earthtrust.org/delrings.html - samssf, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2Yeah, this is awesome. Dolphins are very intelligent. If they were able to walk around on land they'd probably take over the world.
- undershirt, on 01/20/2008, -6/+52uh, I don't think I've ever seen anything that cool.
- dotlizard, on 01/20/2008, -3/+420"It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars and so on -- whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man -- for precisely the same reasons." - Douglas Adams

I love the books and I love the movie, and you realise it was adams himself who decided to tell a different story for the movie? - joshuabowers, on 01/21/2008, -2/+4Murdats: I somehow doubt that Adams would have elected to have the naturalist/atheist tone of the books castrated to make the movies more palatable to the religious masses. If you could find me a link that says otherwise, however, I would be most obliged. Those who complain about the movie sucking are usually referring to that topic.

- Jayg28, on 01/20/2008, -0/+18Wow that was cool. Is that something that only these dolphins do or do, or are all dolphins known to play this way?
- enclaved, on 01/20/2008, -0/+5I was wondering something similar after the last shot of the multiple dolphins, if they all saw the one doing it, would they be able to figure out how to do it too?
- madm0nk, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2Mainly bottlenose dolphins are the ones that do this. There are other species of dolphins that perform similar acts. And as far as I know the bottlenose are the more intelligent ones.
- jbum, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3I've personally seen a bottlenose dolphin at the Mirage in Las Vegas doing this, although the behavior was slightly different. The dolphin at the Mirage was forming the ring by slapping the water with his tail, and then would turn around and bite it. There are more videos of dolphins and beluga whales making bubble rings on You Tube - each one seems to have a slightly different technique - some use air, some don't...
- Elliuotatar, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4All dolphins do this. Here's a video where they blow bubble rings that rise, and slap the sand to make little craters:

- icebrk, on 01/20/2008, -1/+9I couldn't agree more, if you want to help stop the slaughter join us: http://www.actfordolphins.com
- BlackOp, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1That really needs to stop :(
- 1randomnumber, on 01/20/2008, -5/+3What if I want to join in? Is there a place to sign up for the annual dolphin hunts? Cause that sounds pretty friggin cool.
Come on. If they were smart but grotesquely ugly, you know you wouldn't have as much support for that thing.- MacEnvy, on 01/20/2008, -2/+6Like pigs. Pigs are likely nearly as intelligent as dolphins, but we eat them without remorse. Not something that's fun to think about.
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 01/20/2008, -1/+6"Pigs are likely nearly as intelligent as dolphins, but we eat them without remorse."
Well, I used to, and then I found out about their intelligence, and I stopped doing it.
It wasn't really hard. - lacronicus, on 01/20/2008, -1/+6So then what, we can eat animals, but only if they're stupid?
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 01/20/2008, -1/+6"Pigs are likely nearly as intelligent as dolphins, but we eat them without remorse."

- nonymous666, on 01/20/2008, -2/+4if more people would see this, they'd realize just how bored out of their gourd these penned up dolphis are.
- j4200, on 01/20/2008, -1/+9Why don't we try to stop slaughtering our fellow man first? That could be a good first step.
- DeviateSeptum, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Last time I checked, humans aren't an endangered species.
- logga0, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1well said.

- itsthebrod, on 01/20/2008, -1/+11There's something very ironic about this post, and I don't think it was intentional.
- MacEnvy, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1I dugg him up, but only because I'm so sick of my wife making us watch America's Next Top Model.
- Synova, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3Please, please, please let that be intentional...
- AndrewDB, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4Tyra Banks is afraid of everything except the guests on her show and a mirror.
- Humptydank, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3Granted, I was a kid at the time, but I went to Seaworld and they had an opportunity to feed the dolphins.
As cool as it was, your first reaction is not to the depth of intelligence in their eyes. The first thing you notice is that there is a ten foot long, 500-pound mammal with a hundred teeth (bigger than a grizzly bear) coming at the the fish in your hand, and that the fish suddenly doesn't look nearly different enough from your fingers. Then they delicately take the fish from you and hang out, and it's easy to settle down.
But Tyra Banks doesn't seem like she settles down about much of anything, so I guess first impressions meant a lot. - drgmdp, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1i guess i can forgive tyra banks for that
- tapeworm77, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2I'm terrified of Tyra Banks!
- ElbertF, on 01/20/2008, -9/+9Tyra Banks is retarted. That's why.
- RadiantBeing, on 01/20/2008, -5/+189If this isn't proof that dolphins are intelligent, I don't know what is.
- Reaperman, on 01/20/2008, -33/+8They swim into giant, several-miles-long nets like dumbasses and get killed?
It might sound cruel, but i sure as hell stay away from massive nets.- dasdef, on 01/20/2008, -2/+32as you said, they are several miles long. I think you sir, are the dumbass
- chrisaug18, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3I think you both have different definitions of intelligence
- bbardlbradd, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4Imagine dolphins setting up traps in your house for *****, by leaving fresh cheeseburgers out... You'd go for the cheeseburger if there was nothing else around right?
Then they catch you by accident and murder you for the ***** and call you a dumbass... as if they sent you a notice and you didn't read it... - schroderr224, on 01/21/2008, -2/+6We inhale smoke into our bodies purposefully. it's a tie.
- GreenAlien, on 01/20/2008, -3/+7Brain size to body size was all the proof we needed that they're smart.
- yevkasem, on 01/21/2008, -1/+8blowing bubbles isn't proof of anything. how about when they save shipwreck victims? i think that shows a little more intelligence.
- PawFox, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3Your turn.. Come on; Hurry up
- rjones2818, on 01/21/2008, -0/+5Saving victims shows compassion, as well!
- empy, on 01/21/2008, -2/+3they have sex for pleasure?
- judgesuds, on 01/21/2008, -1/+2in the blow hole
- sh4rkb1t3, on 01/21/2008, -0/+4The above is a very uninsightful comment.
First of all, all animals have sex because it feels good for them. No animal is conciously aware that sex causes babies, so they conciously think to themselves to have sex as often as possible to replicate their genes.
Secondly, Dolphins, like humans, are one of the rare species on the planet that cannot detect when a female is fertile. So, they have sex all the time hoping that they might get lucky and have sex when she is fertile, to pass on their genes.- Woah_G!, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3What about those leg humping dogs? Surely they must do it for pleasure too.
- kaplanfx, on 01/21/2008, -2/+1Humans are consciously aware that sex can result in pregnancy (at least some of us). So your statement is false.
- cutlerchris, on 01/21/2008, -1/+1When dolphins can post on MySpace, that's when I believe they truly become intelligent. /sarcasm
- TreDubZedd, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1You imply that there is intelligent life to be found on MySpace. Good luck proving that one.
- MyExSucks, on 01/21/2008, -1/+2Yes, while the dolphins are using the vortices they create and exhale air into the middle of them to create the bubble rings, they do not know the technicality of what they are doing. It is like when humans learn to ride a bike. When we are 3,4 years old and trying to stay up, we neither know, nor can understand, anything about our centers of gravity, about acceleration and velocity. Turning on a bicycle can be done precisely by carefully calculating derivatives and second derivatives of the path you're following, but it's not something that goes through your mind when you're doing it. The dolphins aren't making any calculations about vortices, they just know the feel of doing it.
- dreambrother808, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2i'll take artful feeling over dull derivatives anyday
- TremorX, on 01/21/2008, -2/+3Yeah, friendly and intelligent on rye bread, with some mayonnaise.

- AntBing, on 01/20/2008, -5/+35Dolphins often hunt in groups and use the bubbles to corral the fish into a tight group. Then they each take turns darting through the fish school for an easy meal. They invented the wheel (a bubble) long before we descended from the trees.

- bbardlbradd, on 01/20/2008, -10/+1State your sources... you can't b/c before we descended from trees, there was no method of recording this, unless primitive man used fecal matter to store more information than their diet, and we just haven't figured out how to read it.
- itwasstinky, on 01/21/2008, -0/+3i choose you dolphin!

- estacado, on 01/20/2008, -6/+2Where is it written that it's wrong to eat intelligent animals? I say, if it's not endangered, go ahead and eat it.
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3"if it's not endangered, go ahead and eat it."
That's the spirit! Go ahead. Eat whatever breathes, thinks, reasons, empathizes, builds tool.
As long as it tastes like chicken or better.
Because God said you could, so you don't have to stuff (yuck) vegetables in your face so someone/something else may live.
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3"if it's not endangered, go ahead and eat it."

- monospaced, on 01/20/2008, -2/+20Looks like they're entertaining us, like putting on a show. There also seem to be certain advanced bubble ring blowing techniques such as the time when the dolphin blew a ring, and then sent it rotating quickly. They have created a true artform which they practice and perfect. I'm impressed.

He has a more dedicated following of Diggers, so he can get things to the front page and you'll never know he stole them. Whatever, though, as long as the good stuff makes it to the front page.
- blaze03, on 01/20/2008, -2/+26This is ***** amazing. Dolphins are so smart.
- kru1e, on 01/20/2008, -3/+13dugg for Hitchhikers Guide reference.
- Maynza, on 01/20/2008, -9/+2I WANT ONE ^_____^
- wipis, on 01/20/2008, -11/+3A wheel is a tool for reducing work based on its ability to transfer energy. This is more like blowing smoke rings. Even if it has a use in the wild to corral fish it is still little more then a toy to them. Still... Really freaking cool. I wonder if they would let me play in their bubble game.
- jackminardi, on 01/20/2008, -0/+9probably not with that attitude.
- ZenMojo, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4Oh, they use it to corral fish? I guess that makes it a TOOL.

- rossmills, on 01/20/2008, -5/+16I for one welcome our bubble-blowing overlords
- badmephisto, on 01/20/2008, -0/+34the part that is most amazing to me is that the dolphin can appreciate the beauty of the circle and show creativity. When it recreates the circle over and over, and even modifies it's shape, it's almost as if it was trying to refine it's style, and find something it likes best. Dolphins truly have some characteristics that put them apart from the other animals.
- oldexplorer, on 01/21/2008, -1/+4Exactly - why do humans think they are the only creature that can appreciate beauty and art? I bet dolphins have been doing this for a couple million years - which is incredible.
- IndigoMoss, on 01/21/2008, -7/+1They taste good too.
- Thefatheroftime, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1These animals show a curiosity of the world that transcends mere survival.
This is the step that propelled humans to where we are today, evolutionary.
Incredible. Of course, monkeys and apes exhibit these same characteristics.
- Rocketbird, on 01/20/2008, -7/+4Finally? Have we been heavily anticipating the invention of the wheel by dolphins for some time?
- thepretext, on 01/20/2008, -2/+4I know I have. Good on ya, dolphins!
