- mreade, on 02/10/2009, -2/+333The brave firefighters are doing a fantastic job, working tirelessly through the night with most of Victoria still in flames, and temperatures set to soar over 30C again this weekend.
This photo would be extremely rare, as Koalas almost never need to drink water, thanks for finding it =) - Avaseal, on 02/11/2009, -2/+228CFA...must stand for "Captain ***** Awesome"

- ohhaiimbored88, on 02/10/2009, -4/+111this pic has been around a few times, but it's still epic.
pardon the pun, but the bastard pyro's who started this mess can DIAF. - betheturtle, on 02/11/2009, -0/+97If there were a water version of Om nom nom, it would be Ug glug glug.
- mreade, on 02/10/2009, -0/+92My pleasure. Loosely translated, koala actually means "doesn't drink", and they get all their nourishment and moisture from the gum leaves they eat.
- atomicwedgie, on 02/10/2009, -1/+90Once in a while it's great to see something that bumps my faith in mankind back up a notch.
- giveaphuk, on 02/11/2009, -0/+84makes me proud to be an aussie.
- TimeSpaceMotion, on 02/11/2009, -0/+83Dugg for the hand holding...
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -4/+77Oh, how sweet. A firefighter showing some love.
- lil666jrkatz, on 02/11/2009, -0/+72does not work with squirrels...learned this the hard way
- d2002, on 02/10/2009, -1/+63"Koalas almost never need to drink water"
I didn't know that. I thought with all that fur and all that heat (even during normal Australian weather) they'd be drinking up a storm. Thanks for teaching me something new! - MJMcFitzy, on 02/11/2009, -0/+59Video and follow-up story:
http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,250 ... - ninjaturtles1, on 02/11/2009, -0/+57Actually this is not an uncommon seen at the moment in Australia. I live in Adelaide and do a lot of cycling through the Adelaide Hills, it has been 35 degrees plus here for weeks now, and all the eucalyptus trees are dieing. Normally koalas will not drink water they get all the hydration they need through getting leaves off these trees, but because they are so dry they are coming out of the trees looking for water, we see them on the side of the road and if we give them a bottle they will actually drink from it.
- mattyboy555, on 02/11/2009, -0/+46Dugg for not using "Awesome firefighters are awesome"
- louiebaur, on 02/10/2009, -2/+46Thank you..
- AmyVernon, on 02/10/2009, -0/+40Talk about being in the right place at the right time for that photo... Kudos to the brave men and women fighting these fires.
- GregFD3S, on 02/11/2009, -0/+38I was going to crack a joke about that Super Bowl commercial, but these guys are working their asses off and risking life and limb to save lives.
I can relate, living in San Diego during the fires down here last year. - browwiw, on 02/11/2009, -0/+36The only thing squirrels drink is blood.
- We1rdFishes, on 02/11/2009, -1/+34Nom nom nom.
- JasonAdams13, on 02/11/2009, -7/+40Koalas are also known for their ability to reproduce asexually, store water in their humps, and can kill a grown man with a kick from their muscular hind legs!
- Grova, on 02/10/2009, -0/+31Poor little guy.
- Nightsilencer, on 02/11/2009, -0/+30Well, you just created it.
- inactive, on 02/11/2009, -0/+26Video of this: http://digg.com/world_news/Sam_the_Koala_gets_a_dr ...
- Chompy, on 02/11/2009, -0/+24Just keep an eye out for their dark cousins, the Australian Drop Bear.
- cfuse, on 02/11/2009, -0/+24At some point in the koala's evolution, it just said "***** it" and discarded everything that makes life worth living for the ability to eat poison. They sleep 23 hours a day and are literally retarded - you cannot run many vital functions well off a diet of something we use in Australia to remove marker pen from clothing.
That being said: awwww, it's so cute. - P8ntBal1551, on 02/10/2009, -0/+21that's amazingly cute
- DoofyCat, on 02/11/2009, -1/+22No, it's not Photoshopped - it is real.. Here is the AP article with the photograph (see link below).
Koalas do not normally drink, as others have said, they obtain their moisture from the eucalyptus leaves they eat and don't do much all day, so have slow metabolisms. They usually do not venture down from trees as they are too slow on the ground and easy prey (plus they have no need to venture down.)
This poor little bugger's habitat was razed to the ground on Saturday/Sunday and so she's been forced to the ground, burning her paws.. and desperate for water.

- sczhdtaivfe, on 02/11/2009, -1/+20Holy goddamn ***** that koala's ***** cute.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -3/+22Ah, poor thing.
- ninjaturtles1, on 02/11/2009, -0/+18I live in Adelaide and have seen it first hand, this isn't the only photo of it going around. Here is another:
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/Walkinshaw83 ... - SmthngOriginal, on 02/11/2009, -3/+19***** koala's are cute
- estate, on 02/11/2009, -0/+15Also, like dogs, they don't have sweat glands, so they lose far less water than we do. Of course, they're not as good at core temperature control for the same reason.
- kayson, on 02/11/2009, -0/+15Irony
- NOFXY, on 02/11/2009, -1/+15Do It Again Forallicare?
- jotux, on 02/11/2009, -4/+18Brawno's got what Koala's like, Electrolytes!
- thurows, on 02/11/2009, -0/+14I am proud of Aussies. I experienced this kind of compassion on a daily basis when I was lucky enough to visit there.
- rx7dude, on 02/11/2009, -1/+14Oh, I am sorry, I thought it was obvious that firefighters were awesome! Anyone willing to risk their life to save the lives of others, while facing the possibility of leaving their families with one less person at the end of the day, and, as far as I know, not getting paid quite a bit, deserves quite a bit of respect.
- avatarpalin, on 02/11/2009, -1/+14Please donate at www.redcross.org.au Remember 1 US dollar is worth 1.5 Australian Dollars. I posted this link in other bushfire related stories and people scanned their receipts and put them in the comment thread. It gives us a great feeling to know the Digg community is contributing..
Oh and if you are from the UK, I think 34 pence is 1 au dollar..
euro... last look 1 euro dollar was worth about $1200 Au dollars or something like that - johnleemk, on 02/11/2009, -3/+16KOALAS ***** YEAH
***** EUCALYPTUS AND ***** - Phawkes, on 02/11/2009, -1/+13Don't worry, I get the reference.
- teekay87, on 02/11/2009, -2/+14not really, thats actually pretty standard for a fully grown koala.
- LeftieLucy, on 02/11/2009, -0/+12The water thing is adorable, but what's really killing me is that THEY'RE HOLDING HANDS. That's it, I'm dead from the cute.
- tnoy, on 02/11/2009, -0/+11and your soul.
- JustinNoland, on 02/11/2009, -1/+12...and that, Johnny, is how new memes are made.
- KC9ECI, on 02/11/2009, -0/+11Yes. We are. Thank you.
Much respect to the brothers in Australia at this time. - chussy, on 02/11/2009, -0/+11Hero of mine.
- We1rdFishes, on 02/11/2009, -0/+10Yeah, I dare you to have one as a pet. You'll have your face scratched out within a day. Angry little *****.
