- inactive, on 02/03/2009, -78/+1177Smoking a plant as harmless as marijuana should be at the discretion of the smoker. If he wants to smoke bud, that should 100% his choice and no one should say otherwise. People should be criticizing the selfish c*** that took the photo and sold it to the tabloids.
- jggube, on 02/03/2009, -41/+960I would respect him if - instead of apologizing - he says: "You know what, F**k you guys, I'm a gold-medal-making machine that smokes a little bit of pot... I'll apologize if smoking affects my performance".
- Bukowsky, on 02/03/2009, -18/+431Either way, the guy earns my respect for what he does in the pool. What he does in his off time is non of my business. He's one of the most talented athletes in this country, and the worse thing he does is smoke some weed at a party... oh no, it turns out he's like most other twenty-somethings!
- kemp34, on 02/03/2009, -13/+265I see it as the same as if he was pictured taking a couple shots. Big ***** deal. Let grown men do what they want with their own person.
I own me. The state does not own me. So long as I respect others and do not infringe on their same natural rights, I have the right to do whatever I want to myself.
The best advice I could give to Phelps is do not fall victim to the control freaks who are really out of control at this point. - chupavacas, on 02/03/2009, -21/+231I 100% agree. He should not apologize, however I understand why he did. He stands to lose hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of $ in sponsorships. Apologizing is weak but would any of us think for a second about defending pot use over losing so much money?
- GramarNazi, on 02/03/2009, -7/+212Forgive me for looking at reddit, but here's a worthy comment someone posted there:
"Heh, we were all saying what a dumb inarticulate douchebag he was just little while ago; now he gets busted for weed and suddenly he's jesus." - Frankyfan3, on 02/03/2009, -22/+177“The greatest service which can be rendered any country is to add a useful plant to its culture. “ Thomas Jefferson
- NaziHatinChimp, on 02/03/2009, -18/+172Phelps, this bongs for you.
bRbRBbbbbbbBBbbbbBbrbrbrbbbrrrrrrbbb - NikoKun, on 02/03/2009, -12/+137Good to see an article defending him for once, today. I don't really care for Phelps, but it's absurd of the media to criticize him for Marijuana, when we turn around and have celebrities endorsing a worse drug, alcohol, left and right.
He's young, he has his own life, and he's doing very well for himself... We shouldn't care if he partakes in a little cannabis now and then. A lot of the rest of us do. And we shouldn't be using the "role model" excuse, as a reason to criticize him, and take the blame off bad parenting.
Frankly, Phelps has now unintentionally proven that Marijuana DOESN'T turn people into lazy couch potatoes losers... If he can smoke it, and yet still be a successful/rich multi-gold-metal athlete; obviously those commercials our government wastes billions on, are a bunch of complete lies.
But we already knew that anyway. - XkenX87, on 02/03/2009, -6/+121Now I see how he ate all em cheeseburgers.
- Narcism, on 02/03/2009, -10/+116Not like he's going around without panties flashing his herpes-soaked honey pot.
- HillerMylife, on 02/03/2009, -3/+98That sounds more like something Christian Bale would say.
- 47f0, on 02/03/2009, -0/+91You know, I'm thinking back a couple of years, but I remember when athletes didn't have to apologize for their life off stage.
Babe Ruth never apologized. He used tobacco, drank booze (during prohibition - illegal then as pot is now), cheated on his wives, had an illegitimate kid, overate, over partied, and was a national hero with plenty of endorsements.
Maybe it's time we stopped sticking our big Puritan noses in everyone's private lives. How would that be? - Narcism, on 02/03/2009, -5/+96I approve of the c-bomb drop.
- novicechap, on 02/03/2009, -7/+91Yeah, he should apologize for winning all those medals.
- mickstephenson, on 02/03/2009, -6/+76No, the self censorship was the only mistake you made.
- DaDiggydiggyDOC, on 02/03/2009, -4/+71So am I supposed to freak out when he drinks a beer or takes a shot too? When he drops out of training to get high, give me a call, until then this isn't even news, he is 23 after all...
- pjpete, on 02/03/2009, -9/+75See, this is the reason he eats so much - he has chronic munchies. No pun intended.
- inactive, on 02/03/2009, -6/+72If it's okay for my President to be a stoner, it's certainly okay for some dude that swims laps in a pool.
- kemp34, on 02/03/2009, -10/+73Personally, I would be MORE LIKELY to buy products endorsed by him now than before. I am sure others agree.
- DamnMan, on 02/03/2009, -0/+54He could get new sponsors like Zig-Zag, Bic, Visine and Durritos
- acknotSW, on 02/03/2009, -3/+57I can't remember where or when I heard it, but the quote went something like this.....
"in this day and age of video and still cameras being built into everything, if you're famous and don't want to be filmed at an illegal ***** fight, don't show up at an illegal ***** fight." - CanceledCzech, on 02/03/2009, -6/+52I would gladly throw away such endorsements if it would mean I could publicly support pot and cause more dialog on the subject. Though, it is very easy to say this when I'm sitting in my boxers at my computer.
- frasermoo, on 02/03/2009, -1/+44yeah it's amazing how parents always catch their kids smoking the VERY FIRST TIME THEY TRY IT.
- feignNU, on 02/03/2009, -2/+44I suspect perhaps that it was intended. You tricky *****.
- 420buddah, on 02/03/2009, -0/+39Exactly...he should have said "yea, i smoke pot..and won 8 gold medals this summer..what did your fat ass do this summer?"
- FreeTalkLIve, on 02/03/2009, -17/+54Phelps could go down in history as the guy that got pot legalized.
The man was born to break records. - dienaked, on 02/03/2009, -3/+40So, your church boycotts any product or service that profits by someone using illegal substances?
What's it like being Amish? - d03boy, on 02/03/2009, -5/+41For principles.
- UltraMegaFilms, on 02/03/2009, -5/+37I think he met *****. ***** are little selfish, sassy ***** aren't they.
- maryjanelove, on 02/03/2009, -5/+36I hope he lit a joint after his apology statement.
- EzraSchwartz, on 02/03/2009, -8/+38Heroes don't lie to kids about pot being the devil.
- Obermeister, on 02/03/2009, -6/+35It's sad really. If anything it proves that everything we are told about pot is a lie. Personally, I think this very frightening to the powers that be, because if they have to admit that, then we'll probably start to question a lot more of the lies we are spoon-fed every day.
The powers that be would totally destroy him if he hadn't apologized. As it is he will probably lose everything anyway; maybe they'll even strip his medals. And then the powers that be can show him off as an example of how pot will ruin your life, when of course it wasn't the plant that did it, but everything else they did to him afterwords.
I guess he's going for the "youthful indiscretion" angle right now. Hope that works for him and he gets to keep all the money rolling in. I don't blame him for trying. - inactive, on 02/03/2009, -7/+36Buried as "***** you, get off your pedestal and stop generalizing. Go win some Gold Medals, then you'd be justified in acting like a puddle of cocksnot."
- inactive, on 02/03/2009, -3/+32*doing
And not so far back, it was illegal for black folks to kiss white women in public. Laws ain't always just. - Foenetik, on 02/03/2009, -5/+33I suggest you look here - http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=pu ...
- MaverickAlex, on 02/03/2009, -2/+30I don't think that would work as well as you think. First time I got high was with the pastors kids of my church. Usually the kids that forced to attend church ever week are the ones the first ones to start smoking drugs.
- GRAVEWiSH, on 02/03/2009, -1/+28thats exactly what my bong sounds like!
- minerva43, on 02/03/2009, -2/+29Do you expect someone who makes all their money from sponsorships to NOT apologize? If someone was giving you 20M to stand on only your right foot, you'd apologize to the world if you were caught on camera standing on both feet. The sponsors want a role model, and even if it is retarded, you have to give them that persona if you are going to get paid.
- andersleet, on 02/03/2009, -1/+27He's one of the most talented athletes in this world,...
fixed it for you :D - andrewlotta, on 02/03/2009, -7/+33Phelps would have to be a complete moron to NOT apologize. He has sponsors who pay him big bucks. Why would he risk it all?
- Frankyfan3, on 02/03/2009, -2/+26I do know that. I also believe the sentiment is not mutually exclusive to rice (or bread grains), and we would be aided by thinking about the implications of outlawing a useful plant from our culture.
Industrial hemp is illegal to grow in the USA.
It doesn't make any sense, and the laws against cannabis use are failing to decrease use and crime, just like alcohol prohibition failed in the past.
Al Capone supported prohibition, because he knew the money was in the illegal aspect of the product.
The murdering drug cartels from Mexico also support prohibition.
I can't fathom being on the same side of a debate as them, and I don't see any benefit from the current state of our laws regarding this issue. - GramarNazi, on 02/03/2009, -0/+24Relax, smoke a joint.
- p341250n, on 02/03/2009, -0/+24Thats sarcasm, right?
- NikoKun, on 02/03/2009, -5/+29Well, it is a Broncial Dialator... Meaning that the smoke helps expand your airways a little. But that alone probably wouldn't be a longer lasting effect. I doubt you could consider smoking pot anything close to lung improving, let alone enhancing.
Phelps certainly doesn't need any help with his lungs... But Marijuana probably wont hurt his lung capacity either. Most research shows that Marijuana users have average lung capacity, and after quitting their capacity improves a little. Because most users only smoke a little, occasionally, it probably isn't as harmful as tobacco.
Also, when you take a hit, you hold it in... And that action might help strengthen the lungs... But probably not. lol - inactive, on 02/03/2009, -2/+23I don't think you understand how a bong works.
- oninbonin, on 02/03/2009, -0/+21No he looked pretty skilled in the ways of the bongrip.
- diggopolous, on 02/03/2009, -1/+22Last time I checked my calendar it was FEBRUARY!
- amcnair, on 02/03/2009, -4/+24No clinical proof here, but when I had a human physiology class in college, we tested our lung capacity. My lab partner was a competitive swimmer and water polo player. I was a typical [cough] college student with a great deal of access to the equipment Phelps was operating.
The two highest lung capacities in the class were the swimmer's and mine. He was pissed that I could match his ability to draw in large volumes of air and hold it. - Exhaust, on 02/03/2009, -2/+22Grandma is that you?
